LAN connection problems

Hi, I am having connection problems with my AirPort Extreme base station. I have had it working in since March 2005 just fine, that is until 2 weeks ago.
I have an iMac G5 connecting to the AirPort base through a Ethernet cable and an iBook (graphite G3) wirelessly via an airport card. The AirPort base is wired to the DSL modem via Ethernet cable. With the iMac not connected to the base station the iBook works fine on the wireless connection. The iMac connects fine to the internet when connected to the DSL modem directly. But, when I connect the iMac to the base station I am losing my internet connection to both the iBook and the iMac. I have checked the IP address being fed the iMac and am getting a 169.??? number which, as I understand is a bogus number used to signal problems, a red flag.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Make sure that you have PPPoE disabled on your iMac.
I have checked the IP address being fed the iMac and am getting a 169.??? number which, as I understand is a bogus number used to signal problems, a red flag.
An IP address starting with 169 indicates that your iMac could not properly communicatewith the DHCP server.

    HOME LAN CONNECTION PROBLEM
I set up a 2 unit home net with a Linksys WRT54G Router, One PC hardwired to Port 1 and a Notebook conected via the wireless port. Both PC are Pentium and WXPPRO.
When I try to browse the local workgroup ("MICASA") I get the following error message: "You have no access to "WorkGroup". You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server list for this workgroup is not accessible at this moment."
Wireless has MAC filter enabled and security disabled
    I restricted DHCP adresses to only 2 => 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101
Win XP Pro Firewall is disabled in both PC
I worked as ADMIN with proper password in both boxes. Full file security enabled.
Shared both C disks with proper local and share permits.
In registry both PCs have: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa/"restrictanonimous"=0
I could see both PCs in "my network places" for a couple of days, with full and proper file sharing, and then both pc's dissapeared. Both PC's access internet properly.
The obnoxious message listed at the beginning began appearing when I click "Workgroup" in "my network places". I tried everything, including unsetting and re-setting file sharing for C disks. Nothing happens.
The W2K Resource Kit Browser Monitor reports no brouser on the LAN.
I can ping one adress from the other and I can log onto the other box shares by typing the name in Windows Explorer (\\Pentium or \\PCdeLidia)
    Any clue will be welcome

    Thank you, timelord.
I checked the Node setting (ipconfig /all) and it is "broadcast".
So, I decided to start all over again.
    1) I un-shared all shares in both computers (The notebook and the desktop).
    2) I reset the linksys router and used the Linksys setup wizard to reconfigure it from 0 (cero) - dropped (disabled)  ALL security - Left only admin setup password - Changed the workgroup SSID from "MyHome" To "Home" - just to be sure.
    3) Run network setup wizard in desktop (WXP Pro). Sharing Printers and files enabled.
    4) Stopped and Disabled the WXP firewall in the Desktop (it was disabled, but the network wizard enables it and leaves it running)
    5) Rebooted the Desktop
    6) At this point, I finally could browse the local lan and see my desktop listed
My Network Places / All the Net / Microsoft Windows Network / "Home" / "Pentium" (my desktop)
    7) Went over to the notebook and re-checked all file-sharing was off, then I erased the WI-FI profile in it (uses the Intel wizard), changed the workgroup name from "My Home" to "Home", Rebooted it and connected it to the Wi-Fi "Home" net that was detected. ALL security disabled, including WXP Firewall.
    8) Now, the whole net is visible from both PC's
My Network Places / All the Net / Microsoft Windows Network / "Home" / "Pentium" (my desktop)
My Network Places / All the Net / Microsoft Windows Network / "Home" / "PCdeLidia" (my wife's  notebook)
    9) I enabled a couple of shares in both machines and I could browse them and connect to them
    10) Finally, all goes to hell: I shut-off both PCs and the LinkSys router. Then I powered the linksys, and then the Desktop. The notebook still OFF. And Voilá, same awful post:
"You have no access to "WorkGroup". You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server list for this workgroup is not accessible at this moment."
I'm not even able to see myself.
One tip: I used the browser monitor from W2K. Before, I was able to see 3 (three) lines listed, no browser. Unfortunately, i did not write it down. Now I can see only the following 2 (two) lines:
MiCasa \Device\NetBT_TCPIP_ {€ unknown  (Not an Euro sign, something like that)
    MiCasa \Device\NwlnkNb         unknown
Now I have to quit, no more time, I'll continue later and keep you posted
    Thank you again

  • Internet DSL/Router/LAN connection problem

    Hi!
I hope that someone can help me diagnose a LAN/router/DSL problem...
I have a B&W G3 running OS X 10.3.9 and a QS 2002 G4 running OS X 10.4.2. These two Macs comprise a LAN, along with LaserWriter Select 360 printer which is using an AssanteTalk Ethernet to Localtalk Bridge.
The LAN is wired to a Linksys BEFSR-41(v.2) Router with firmware version1.45.47, with a SpeedSteam 5360 DSL modem on the WAN port to communicate with SBC/Ameritech.
Just within the past couple of weeks, I've been unable to access the internet when both Macs are connected via my router. If I disconnect one or the other Mac from the router, the internet connection remains stable and I can browse. The DSL light remains steady green on the modem regardless of whether one or both Macs are connected.
The network otherwise works fine. I can connect from one Mac to the other, mount volumes, move files, share printers, etc.
For the past couple of years to date, I have been using the following identical Network Preference settings on each of the Macs:
    Location: Automatic via Built-in Ethernet
TCP/IP Tab... Configure IPv4 Using DHCP
    PPPoE... (not used)
    Appletalk... Active
Proxies... (none used, Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) is checked)
    Ethernet... Configured Automatically
The Linksys is configured to connect via PPPoE with my SBC account name and password. It has no filters or other more complex settings enabled and the connection is set to "Keep Alive", with a 30 second redial period.
I have bypassed the router and singly connected each computer stably via a second Network Location setup using PPPoE. I also get a stable connection via the router if I disconnect the ethernet cable from either one Mac or the other. I have swapped cables, reset/reconfigured the router, disconnected the printer from the router, disabled AppleTalk, all to no avail.
I've run the normal system maintenance repair routines without luck (Repair Disk, Repair Permissions, maintenance scripts, clean caches et all with OnyX, reset PRAM & NVRAM).
Any advice on this would really be appreciated!
    Gary

    Hi, Dave!
Thanks for responding! The last time someone responded to any thread I started was in 2001, when I actually got solutions for two different problems. Since then, I must have developed bad breath or something... This time, I figured someone would respond. Heck, I would have considered just about any response as "helpful", just for the moral support, if nothing else! Instead, I had to simply mark it as answered after nailing down the problem.
I have no clue concerning the posts, levels, etc. I've always remained somewhat oblivious to the post totals, other than trying to figure out how to do justice with active ones, since I sometimes tend to bite off more problems than I have the time to help with. Are you "stuck" on 314 as your current post number? Maybe the old ones being removed lately just happen to match the number of new ones being added (that's a real stretch, though). You might check out or post to the Discussions Feedback folder, which has become somewhat of an open forum and may have some info on what's going on.
    Good to hear from you!

  • LAN connection problem

I have a desktop running WinXPHome using windows firewall and a laptop running Win7 Home Premium using McAffee which "manages" the firewall settings. Both are on a local network using LinkSys WRT120n. XP machine is hardwired. Win7 laptop is wireless. Both can access the internet without any problem. XP can access shared files on the laptop. The laptop "sees" the XP machine as an "other device" but it cannot access it to share files or include it in the network map. Login names are the same for both computers. However, password protection is turned off.  File sharing for both is turned on with the least restrictive permissions set. Both recognize the proper workgroup (work).  Homegroup on the Win7 computer is unjoined. Both computers "see" and recognize the network name.  When trying to access the XP machine, I get a message that says it cannot connect because of lack of permission. McAfee shows a network diagram that includes both computers. I have had a McAfee tech person remotely look at the McAfee settings and he says they are set as they should be and are not causing the problem. I have spent untold hours trying to find answers on the internet including other forums and haven't yet found the answer. Linksys recommends turning off the software firewalls. I',m  concerned about doing this.  How good are the router hardware firewalls and will they alone provide the needed protection?  Does anyone think this will solve the problem?  Related question; do wireless security mode settings have to be compatable with the hardwired computer (XP). As nearly as I can tell, the XP computer is only compatible with WEP or WPA?  I have tried both to no avail.  It is currently set to WPA2. I assume this setting only applies to "wireless".  Since the XP machine is hardwired, does it matter?
    Thanks

    Toomanydonuts & Wizzard,
I finally got back to my problem. I entirely removed the McAfee software from the Win7 laptop and then turned off the firewall. No effect. I then turned off the firewall on the XP machine. No effect. So, I reinstalled McAfee and turned the firewalls back on.  To reiterate, on the Win7 laptop, when I go to "Computer", under "Network" on the left, both the Win7 and XP computer names are listed. If I click the XP machine name I get a network error message that says " Windows cannot access "machine name". Contact your network administrator to request access".  Then it says there is more information in Help and Support.  If I go there, there is a list of 7 items that "could be" causing the problem. I can eliminate all but two with reasonable certainty: "Group  Policy might be blocking the connection". As nearly as I can tell there is no Group Policy in effect. "Your computer doesn't have the latest updates for your router". As nearly as I can tell, the disc that came with the router only makes setting changes on the router and, except for Network Magic and some virus software, if you want it, does not put anything on the computer.  Am I wrong about this?  I have looked all through the router settings and have changed only the essential items regarding network name, passwords, security mode, etc. I don't know much about what the various settings do, so I've left them pretty much alone. BTW, I'm not using Network Magic yet.  It seems like this should work without it and I don't want to pay for any software that I don't need.
Regarding the network adaptor; there is a list of items that I know nothing about. Most are set at "defaul" or "auto" and nothing pops out as being permissions related.
BTW, I've been on-line messaging with a LinkSys tech person about this and they say they can do no more than make sure I'm able to access the internet.  Local networks are outside of the scope of what they deal with. That seems absurd to me since we are dealing with a networking device.  Oh well!  Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

  • LAN Problem in Windows 2003 Server (LAN connection disabled)

I have installed LAN in Windows 2003 Service. But it shows LAN connection disabled.  LAN connection is also proper.
I asked local vendor, he told me that it may due to virus problem. i do not want to format the machine against. i have very much useful data in it.
    Kedar

    Hi
Do you mean you have plugged in the network cable to the server and the network card showing disabled.
If its disabled in the network and sharing then you need to enable it.
If you can't see any network connection in the network and sharing form control panel then check if the network card driver has installed properly.
if you can see the network connection then simply right click and enable them.
    Thanks

  • PC Suite 6.81.13.0 problem (LAN connection gone)

    Hi,
After installing PC Suite 6.81.13.0 (on Windows XP Prof SP2) my LAN connection is gone. The network adapter is completely gone from the hardware devices. After rebooting Windows detects a new device.
I am unable to reach anything on your LAN or the internet (of course).
I had to do a system restore to recover this.
Any ideas? I uses the PC Suite cleanup utility before installing 6.81.13.0.
(My phone is a N80, but I don't think that matters)

I did try that and even that did not work. Windows could not rollback to the previous drivers. I will try and find new drivers on HP's website. (It's a HP Compaq D530 SFF computer).

  • Lan connectivity Issue on autonomous AP with throttles

              Hello,
I encounter a strange problem on several AP 1242 in version 12.4(25d)JA1 of a customer :
He has 10 autonomous AP covering a factory and is using them for laptop connectivity and TOIP with mainly 7921 Cisco Wifi Phones.
The phones are configured to use only 802.11a.
The APs loose LAN connectivity randomly and therefore the clients don't work anymore.
The AP are connected on a 2960 and a 3560 wich are in turn connected on a 3750 wich route the trafic.
After checking spanning-tree no loops are present.
When I check the counters on the AP involved I see the "trhottles" and "ignored" counters incrementing on the fa0 link of the AP impacted wich mean I think it can't handle the incoming traffic. This incoming traffic seems not to be too big however. I can see drops on the switch interface connecting the AP.
There is a lot of roaming on the AP due to people walking in the factory with their wifi phones.
Here is a view of the fa0 counters :

Does someone ever experienced a similar problem ?
When I shut radio interfaces they're is no more problems on the LAN. Can this be an overlapping coverage issue ?
Can someone please give me advices on how to troubleshoot this issue ?
Thank you in advance as I'm a bit stuck.
    Best Regards,

         Hi Scott,
    Thanks for your reply.
Do you think this can be the origin of the issue my customer encounters or is it only to be standard ? As this change will have to be made on all clients, if there is a chance it solves the problem I will do it ASAP, if not I will delay it in a less busy period :-)
Can the constant roaming associations and dissasociations overload the AP and make it stop responding on the LAN or is it only a throuhput problem ?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

  • Local Network Connection Problem with SQL Server 2008 R2

    Hi,
I have CRM application which uses SQL server 2008. Weird thing is that I have no problems connecting from client machines to the server when using a particular router (via LAN) and when I upgrade the firmware of the same router (A common open source firmware
which is used by many also works perfect apart from mentioned problem) and restart the server, the connection cannot be established. I get Error 40.
When i downgrade the firmware and restart the server, the connection works again.
Please note that I am absolutely not touching any configuration of the server. Also the CRM software allows remote connections from public IPs which this feature works fine with both downgraded and upgraded firmwares.
As for my understanding, the routers do not block ports in LAN connections. So how can I diagnose the reason for this connection problem?

    Hi Leony83,
Please also help to check Windows Event Log information regarding this issue, so that we can do further investigation. In additin, here is the general steps to troubleshoot SQL Server Error 40 issue. Please see:

  • Connection Problem HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910

    Dear Forum,
we are experiencing connection problems with the Officejet Pro 8500 A910 Printer/Scanner.
The device is connected via Wireless Network and can reach the server (e.g. for storing scanned images).
When we try to access the printer (or scanner) with a Computer (WinPC or Mac) that is also connected via the same Wireless Network, the printer/scanner cannot be reached (host unreachable), i.e. even a simple PING to the network address (IP V4) of the printer/scanner cannot be completed. As soon as we connect the computer via wired LAN, the printer/scanner can be reached again (normal operation). Between both states (computer connected via Wireless Network or Wired LAN) no changes were made to the configuration of the printer/scanner. It simply is unreachable when the computer trying to connect to the printer/scanner is connected via Wireless Network.
We have looked at different firewall settings of the Wireless Router but did not find anything, the firewall is deactivated (as the router operates behind a firewall, as does the whole LAN).
I already switched on the "compatibility to 802.11b/g" in the advanced network settings of the printer, no effect.
Anyone got a smart idea why this is so? We tried with different computers and different operating systems, but always the same picture...
    Thanks!
    This question was solved.

    Reset the printing system:
    - Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

  • HP OfficeJet 8500 on Network - Connection Problem

    Hi -
We are a home office with 4 computers that are connected via a LAN.
My wonderful HP 8500 is connected via USB cable to a PC running Windows Vista.  Works great.  Solution Center - the whole deal.  The PC is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable.  The printer is designated as shared.  This computer also has a 2nd printer (not HP) attached to it via USB cable, also shared, and it too works without problem.
A second Windows Vista PC, also connected by Ethernet cable to the router, can print to the HP 8500 without a problem.  It also prints
The third computer is a Windows 7 PC, also connected by Ethernet cable to the router.  We have installed the drivers for the 8500 on this computer, and the computer indicates the shared printer is installed.  However, it will not print to the 8500.  It has no problem with the 2nd printer on the first computer I mentioned.
The fourth computer is a brand new Dell Inspiron All-in-One, currently connected to the LAN wirelessly, and running Windows 8.1.  I have downloaded and installed the basic driver - Corporate Edition 14.0 because we do not need the solution center at this machine.  All we want is the print capability.  When I installed I selected "LAN Connection" and "will install printer later."  After installing the drivers, I did "Add a printer" and I got the completion message from windows "You've successfully added HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909a Series on ..."  I clicked on "Print a Test Page" I get the message "A test page has been sent to your printer" but when the printer window it shows no document in the queue and nothing happens at the printer.
I have not tried to install the 2nd printer on the new machine, yet.  It is 6 years old, even though it works great I don't believe it is supported by the manucturer.  It was very difficult to find a dirver for the Windows 7 machine.  I am only mentioning that in case anyone asks.
Can anyone help us get the 8500 working on the 7 & 8.1 machines?  Thanks is advance.

I am sorry.  Lets try this again...
I am not sure if this will solve your problem, however you might try following the instructions at this link to see if it helps resolve the issue.  Though primarily for Win 8 or 8.x OS, it might also help with the Win 7 issue.  Worth a try...

  • Can't keep internet and Lan connected at same time

For those of you who have helped before I apologize for the repetition but I'm it for IT person at my husband's office. Guy we used has gone to NYC. Network is ethernet connected-6 iMac G5's running 10.4 served by G3 running OS9. Also has a 2-3 week old 16 port Linksys switch-not router-which replaced our old Asante hub-needed to boost signal from the server over distance. The original network used manually configured IP addresses starting with 192.100.100.2 for the server and continuing on .3,.4, etc. On October 21st we were set up for DSL service with Verizon-purpose to provide internet access for all users on the network except the server. The DSL modem/router is a Westell 6100. It is connected to the switch, ethernet, and phone jack. We do not use any DSL phone filters because we have a phone system (Merlin) and filters aren't needed. During the DSL installation,it was necessary to change our manual TCP/IP setting to DHCP in order to connect to the internet. This of course gives different IP addresses. It also necessitated giving the switch an IP address which was assigned 192.100.100.1-a number I understand is normally reserved for the router. During installation, after he got internet connection, the workstations lost all connection to our server-data base. He went back in, switched us back to manual TCP/IP and all was working well until last night. While I was doing a port scan in the network utility on one of the work stations, we lost internet connection throughout the network. The DSL modem showed power, ethernet, DSL but no internet. After working with Verizon several times today, we were able to get connected. There was a mismatch of user and password on the router which they tell me was most likely due to a power surge. In order to reset the DSL we direct connected off the Lan using DHCP. I was happy to have the modem up again but advised the very helpful Verizon rep that I had now lost the LAN. He advised, very nicely and correctly,"not my job". I have now tried any number of combinations in the network preference panels with no success. I even made one attempt with internet sharing on one of the computers to make it be a router but succeeded only in knocking it off the LAN and no connection. Right now that means we can only use the LAN even though the DSL modem is connected again. Any ideas anybody.

Have gotten some additional information to add to the mix on this issue. First-apologies to Rick on not getting back to you earlier. We have had internet connectivity problems over the weekend due to high wind-trees down. Also spent all day with software people who were able to come down on Saturday to address glitches so we wouldn't have to go in over Timbuktu. They have no idea how to fix. Situation is still as it was-just a bit more info. It is not that the LAN itself will not work when we are connected to the internet via DHCP. It is our operating software that will not work that way. It states on the PracticeMaker,(modified FileMakerPro) opening page "Must use TCP/IP, cannot use DHCP. Each computer must have its own IP address". So it is not actually the LAN going down though the net result is the same. The fellow who set it up got back to me. He thought the only thing he did differently was to manually enter 2 DNS addresses but I already had those in. I have further determined that the Westell 6100 modem is a modem+router. Saw a post on the G5 forum where Verizon techs advised Mac user to set it up via PPPoE. Looked at that option but don't know what to do with it. By the way, same user got 4 different set up configs from 4 different Verizon techs. I have to think that I would need to change the modem/router configuration which is currently set up "DHCP with private LAN".

  • Is it possible to control (screen share) my Mac Book on my PC over a LAN connection with fullscreen 1920x1080 resolution AND sound?

I've fiddled with Team Viewer and was able to control my Mac on my PC, but it wasn't over my LAN connection (it was slow), and it was a small windowed view without the Mac's sound. I want to cotrol my Mac, with my PC over LAN and on a 1920x1080 resolution with the Mac's sound on my PC.
(Sry for a almost report of this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4031259) but I forgot to ask about the sound).

well there is a program called logmein found at logmein.com. it fixes your resolution problem, but the speed is still not the best due to a lag still. As long as internet connections are decent, the lag should be minimal

  • Oracle Tomcat Connection Problem

    Dear all,
We have Oracle as the back end and Java-Jsp-Struts as the front end for our project. For the last few days we are facing a strange problem and although we tried a lot we were not able to find even the cause of the problem
We have Oracle server and Webserver running on seperate machine. As this is a webbased solution , clients can take the pages by putting the URL in the browser. The problem is that the connection to the database is lost sometimes and we need to restart our apache tomcat service to get the connection again. Once it is restarted the pages work fine for sometime and after sometime the problem comes again. Sometimes the problem occures frequently and sometimes rarely.
Please help us as we tried a lot to troubleshoot but failed.
Whenever we are loosing connection, the database or listener seem to have no problem as they are running perfectly fine. Is there something that should be done in Tomcat for oracle connections? Or if multiple users are accessing the database at the same time is there something to do sothat the webserver is able to handle these multiple connections and update operations?
The error messages that we get are:
The network adapter could not establish the connection
or The TNS Listener could not resolve the SID given in the connection descriptor
If the error is the second one then sometimes it will vanish after sometime even without restarting thr tomcat service . But for the first one we must restart the service
    All suggessions are welcome.
    Regards,
    Cochu.

    Hi,
Thanks for your valuable suggession, but when I
tried to ping from webserver to db server, it was
pinging all the time and I am sure that the LAN
    Connection is alright.
    Regards,
Cochu. No, the fact that Oracle works at all says that your network connection between servers is not the problem.
When you say "connection to Oracle", it sounds like you literally mean a single connection to Oracle. You open the connection on startup, so if it's stale or lost or dropped you have to restart the web app. Is this true?
If it is, your solution is to use a database connection pool and rewrite the database code in such a way that you get a fresh connection out of the pool when request comes in, use it, and immediately close it in the same scope, returning it to the pool. Scope should be within a single transaction in a single method. You should keep a connection open only for as long as you need it for a request.

  • Strange: just lost use of Built In Internet (LAN) connection!

    Greetings,
I was just switching from wireless Airport connection to Built In internet (wired/LAN) connection (I do that to insure more reliable large downloads, software updates), and I realized that upon Turning Off Airport, I was not getting automatic connection to the built in NIC, as I do usually. I checked Preferences >>> Network, and observed that the built in connection was "inactive". I am not sure how to activate it again. LAN cable is OK, internet connection and modem OK, etc...
    I'll appreciate refresher!
    - Roger T

sig, thanks a lot for your prompt reply... I had restarted the system indeed.
I got to start looking deeper into seldom visited settings... And I found one that fixed the problem.
I went to "System Preferences" >>> "Network" >>> observed that the "Built In Internet" was INACTIVE >>> clicked on the smal, gear-like button at the bottom, right next to the "+" and "-" buttons. AND, lo and behold, by making the "Service Active", I restored the Built In Internet" connection.
Man, go figure what disconnected it in the first place! I just drew a blank initially!
Thanks again... Sometimes, one needs a prod

  • Solaris 10 x86 64-bit wireless connection problem

I installed Solaris 10 x86 32-bit on my laptop together with Fedora 10 (Linux) and Windows XP.
When I boot up Fedora 10 and WinXP, these two OS are able to find the wireless driver automatically, but Solaris 10 failed.
When I do prtconf -pv, I saw my wireless card is listed in the output.
So I update the /boot/solaris/devicedb/master and /etc/driver_aliases with my wireless card id - pci168c,001a
    Then do sys-unconfig and reboot
But after reboot, Solaris still only tries to configure the ethernet card (NIC) rather than checking out the wireless connection.
I think this might be a design flaw for Solaris 10. If it runs on x86, most users would have wireless connection, not just land line connection.
Does anyone here have a solution for this problem?
    Thanks a lot!

I assume that when solaris 10 boots up, it only checks the land line NIC card, not the wireless card. If there is no lan connection, then so be it.
    Is that right?No! :-)
nwam only supports one device but the device is selectable. physical should activate all devices regardless. So if your Wifi isn't working then I would use wificonfig to see what it can see. Check the man page for scan and showstatus options. Then you'll know what it's seeing.
