Laptop takes ages to make connection to home hub

Whenever I start my laptop (including waking up from power-save modes), it attempts to reconnect to the hub - and fails. Eventually, it will find the connection, and then all is well, until I shut it down again...
I can't seem to do anything to speed up this process - this morning it took an hour before I had a connection, though it's probably half that on average. Other laptops and desktops connect straight away.
I'm using Vista, the desktops are XP, other laptops are XP and Vista, all connecting wirelessly to Home Hub 2. The errors I get are invalid key (which it clearly isn't) and timeout. Usually, mine is the only computer switched on, so it's not competition from the others. The hub itself is fine, and onward connections to broadband and the phone line (landline & broadband talk) are normal.
I was also getting random disconnects, but I found something on the net that suggested I disable wireless power save on the laptop - and that seems to have sorted that one. Is there anything else I can try?

What about this?
Also have you tried setting the hub so it allocates a fixed ip address to the problematic laptop?
You might find mutliple enteries for your laptop in your hub manager.
My PC and Laptop are set to 192.168.1.100 and .200. This keeps them 'out the way' from other ip addresses.
I'd say the best bit of advice on the guide from jarviser is to remove all the Bt software if you have it installed and let windows manage your wireless network. Does a much better job, personally I never use and wireless management utility that comes with any wireless adapter or laptop/PC, I find that they are all unreliable.

    I have uninstalled re installed
    rebooted router several times
deleted all connection in network manager then fired up again
    adjusted and manually connected,
stopped virus guard currently msn essentials but previous was avast both worked fine until sunday no issues with firewall that I can see
    any advice please

if you installed the BT cd the recommendation of the forum is to uninstallit as it can cause problems with wifi connections.  just let windows manage you wifi connections.
if that does not solve it then try changing the wireless from default b/g/n to just b/g
you can also try downloading inssider2 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.

  • Mac won't connect to home hub

I am trying to connect my MacBook pro to my bt home hub but despite entering the correct password I am told I have no Internet connection. The wifi sign in system preferences is orange, and says I have a self assigned ip address. The hub is working on other devices in the house. I have tried both apple and bt and neither can help!!

  • Finding hard drive connected to Home Hub on Window...

    Hi all,
I've connected an external hard drive to the USB port of my Home Hub 5. It's detected fine and when I go to Run and enter: File://192.168.1.254 it opens the hard drive without any issue.
Is there an easier way to access this though, or some way to make it appear in My Computer, or something similar. Whilst I'm happy to use this feature, others in the family could get confused and I'd be much happier if it appeared in their Shared Documents or My Computer section. Is this possible?

I haven't tried this but could you not put a shortcut on the desktop which would allow you to access it that way.

  • Connecting 2 home hubs across long distance wirele...

We are renovating a house. The phone line and HH3 are sited in a shed/office 60-100 feet away from the house. We ran a separate power line underground from the house so the electrical circuits in the house independent to the office/shed. I may move the phone line into the house but, as it stands, I need to connect a second HH inside the house, plugged into the phone line but I hear there could be complicated connection issues.
I do have a Netgear range extender that plugs into the electrical circuit but given they are independent would this work?
Can someone advise me, please. Must I use a second BT hub or another make? If so, must it the same HH3?
I have checked the Home Hub folder and cannot find any mention of a 'slave' router.

A home hub cannot repeat a wireless signal without a direct cable.
BT have a number of solutions on this page BT Connected Home
Provided the shed is still fed from the same house distribution box, then Powerline adapters normally work fine.
Ideally, you could run an Ethernet cable out to the shed, as that would work the best.

  • Wirelessly Connected to Home Hub 3, Cannot Get Int...

    Hello,
BT Infinity installed on 6th June Home Hub 3 (type B).  Previously on BT Broadband.
One laptop computer connects to the hub but will not connect to the Internet wirelessly (connects wired).  Running Windows 7.  Cannot surf, Skype.
Have been on to tech support (for hours!) they tried all the usual (change channel, update drivers, took control of laptop remotely, everything possible done).
Still not working, although did get a very brief sporadic connection.
Computer in question (Samsung Netbook, "n" connection) worked perfectly on old BT Broadband, works out of the house on wifi connections.
Has anyone had this problem?  Are there any solutions?
    Thanks.

Hi guys you most likely have this solved already but just incase I have recently encountered the same problem with my 'netbook'
I have tried everything from installing new drivers to creating a 'disable' registry key for IPV6 .. The way I solved this and hope it works for you was...
Go to you your sharing point and open wireless network connection.
    Click properties
In the dialogue box uncheck 'internet protocol version 6 (tcp/ipv6)
    Then above it click 'configure'
Another dialogue box will open informing you that you have made changes.
    Click 'yes'
This will open up in my case 'RealTek' driver.
    Click on 'advanced' tab
    'Wireless mode'
Go to right hand side of dialogue box and select 'value' drop down box
    Select 'IEEE 802.11b/g'
These deselects the 'n' router aspect as I believe our network adapters can't function with this.
    Now click 'ok'
    Let computer re-connect to router.
    Now try opening web pages.
    Problem solved (",)
    Hope this helps guys.
If you want to disable the IPV6 through registry I will put up details on how to do this but I believe this should suffice.

  • Cannot connect to Home Hub Manager

Cannot connect since I renamed my 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels.
    I used a space and bracket which I don't think works - i.e. BTHomeHub (2.4GHz)
However I cannot now access the Home Hub Manager to rename the networks.
I have tried to access via:
    api.home
    192.168.1.154
    bthomehub.home

I suggest you try a factory reset of the hub

  • Problem connecting to Home Hub 2 with a Kindle Fir...

My parents have just bought a Kindle Fire HD and I'm helping them set it up, but I'm having to do it via Skype video because I live a long way away. This is their only wifi device; their PC is connected to their Home Hub 2 via Ethernet cable.
They've got wifi connectivity, but when they try to access the internet on the Kindle they always get directed to the BT Fon login page. Would I be correct in thinking that this is because they're actually connected to *somebody else's* Home Hub 2 in the same street? My parents left the SSID of the Home Hub as the factory default, and that's what they looked for in the list of available networks, so presumably one of their neighbours also has a Home Hub 2 and also hasn't changed the SSID?
    Solved!

    AVR2 wrote:
OK, interesting. So each hub broadcasts two separate SSIDs? I'm sure they said they were connecting to "BTHomehub2-NHRR"
Yes, that is the case, unless they opted out of BT wifi/FON. If they never intend to use any of the free BT hotspots when away from home, then opting out will remove those extra SSIDS.
The automatic connection to BT FON is a common problem. On most devices there is an option to "forget" the BT FON/BT wifi connections, and the device should not re-connect to them.
See if you can get them to do that first, then try and reconnect to BTHomehub2-NHRR, entering the wireless key when prompted.
Do they have any other wireless devices connected to the home hub 2?

  • HP Laptop takes a long time to load home screen

Last Night, I decided to update my laptop because I looked at my updates and I did what I was supposed to. It was taking a long time to restart, so I shut it off and turned it back on. My laptop said it was installing updates, so when it finished updating.  I turned if on, and it went to the Hp screen where it started loading, once that screen went away the laptop went to a black screeen, and it stayed like that for about 5-10 minutes. So I turned it off and turned it back on about five or six times when I decided to press the B and windows keys, so my laptop did a bios test. Once that finished, It went straight to the HP logo, and then it just went to a black screen. I dont know if it did this because I restarted my laptop way too many times last night, or because I decided to update the laptop. Help!

  • Connection on Home hub v2

Tried different hub, v2 and even v 1.5 etc...tried in master socket, tried in dedicated broadband extension, but all the same. Occasionallly get some pages but very very slow.
Bt sending engineer on thurs, but cant help thinking its all very unusual to have happened since new consumer board, but cant think if there is a link what it is?
    any thoughts?
    cheers tim

  • Connect BT home hub to Netgear prosafe fs116 switc...

I have a BT infinity hub that connects and works well with one port in the house at a time if connected directly via the gig port on the hub.
I want to activate all the house ports by using a netgear switch.
If I connect the GiG port on the BT hub to the netgear switch and then connect the netgear switch to the house ports, none of the house ports work.
    The netgear switch works.
I have also tried a cross over cable from the BT hub to the netgear switch...no luck.
    Help.
    Thanks
    V

From memory the FS116 is only a 10/100 switch.  Have you tried using one of the 10/100M ports on the HH3 to connect the the netgear switch? (Sorry I can't remember which are 10/100M)
If you use the last port on the netgear (port 16), to connect to the HH3 this can be manually switched between MDI / MDIX so should not matter if you have a straight or cross cable.  Does the link LED light?
Do the link LED's come up on the ports used to connect to the other devices around your home?  Check that your devices are set to auto duplex and auto speed?  Do the devices have the correct IP address, mask, DNS and gateway?
What errors are you seeing on the devices?

  • Connecting server to Home Hub 1.5

All Apologies for this probably being a silly question, but I want to connect my Home Hub 1.5 to another computer using one of the ethernet ports and I am struggling. The reason for connecting the computer is that I am using the computer as a music server which will then connect through the hub wirelessly to other devices around the house. My problem is that I connect the computer using the Ethernet cable but using my laptop wirelessly in other areas of the house I cannot see the hard wired computer. The laptop I am using is running Windows 7 and the PC is running Vista. Now I accept I may have compatibility problems with the two operating systems, but I have not got that far yet as I cannot even see the PC! So would appreciate any pointers or ideas or any documentation on this site which will explain in muppetry terms how to do this! Would appreciate any help. Cheers

You need to run the Windows network setup wizard and create a home network. Make sure that both computers are in the same workgroup, and enable file sharing on Vista.
You should the ne able to see the Vista computer from Windows 7.

  • Running Home Hub 3 as a modem? (bridged/connected ...

    Hey all.
Looking to connect a Home Hub 3 to the WAN port of a Linksys WRT54GL and have it act as a modem only, (just pass an IP address along). With the 54GL doing all the managment of my network.
Done it before with an O2 Thomson, but can't find much info full stop about the Home Hub 3 on google, so hoping someone might be able to help, or point me in the direction of some threads/guides?
I know it would be easier to just buy a decent ADSL2+ router, but the Linksys is like a member of the family.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for reply.
Got nothing against the HH3, just prefer my Linksys running CF as is capable of so much more. Initally I ended up with the O2/Linksys setup years ago as a short term bodge due to lack of funds for the decent ADSL2+ router I needed, but worked so well it got left like it and still not feeling the benefit from Wireless N is enough to justify splashing out. Gigabit ethernet would be nice, but not like I stream HD content or have NAS, so better things to spend the monies on for now.
Will have a google around on the HH2, would take a nudge in the right direction at this point, as seem to have forgotten everything I ever learned about routers lol. Cant even get Telnet access to the **bleep** thing! (swear filter fail)
    Cheers.
