Hi,
on 10 gR2, any query on RMAN tables that shows the date of the last FULL backup ?
Thank you.

try this, this works in all versions of oracle.

  6          , round(sum(bp.bytes/1024/1024),2) bsize
  7     from v$backup_set bs, v$backup_piece bp
  8     where bs.set_stamp = bp.set_stamp
  9     and bs.set_count  = bp.set_count

  • Full RMAN backup in day time

    Hi,
    if we launche Full RMANBACKUP in day work time, is it bad for performance nad users activities ?
    Usually we launche it during the night.
    Thank you.
    PS : DB 8i RMAN 8i on Win 2003.

    Depends on your situation.
    If we miss a backup during the evening (backup destination fills up whatever). We often just run the backup during the day. No one (in user land) even notices.
    I'm not saying that a full backup will have no impact under any situation, but unless you are running a system pretty close to capacity in terms of CPU, disk bandwidth etc. you should be safe.
    In the old days - when we were on 8i.... seem to recall that running a full backup would slow things down and users would gripe, so we had to weight keeping users happy and where we were in terms of recoverability. But I suspect that was more a function of hardware a few years back than Oracle.

  • Rman backup full then level 0 and level 1 Weekly

    Please share your thoughts of backups.
    Friday -> Take a full rman backup
    Saturday -> Take a level 0 rman backup -> If recovery needed restore full and apply level 0 ?
    Sunday -> Take a level 1 rman backup -> If recovery needed restore full and apply incremental 1 ?
    Monday -> Take a level 2 rman backup -> If recover needed restore full and apply incremental 1 ?
    Tuesday -> Take a level 1 rman backup -> If recover needed restore full and apply incremental 2 ?
    Wednesday -> Take a level 2 rman backup -> If recovery needed restore full and apply incremental 1 ?
    Thursday -> Take a level 1 rman backup -> If recovery need restore full and apply incremental 2 ?
    Thanks

    Please note that Full and level 0 backs are same...
    Sunday -> Take a level 0 rman backup
    Monday -> Take a level 1 rman backup
    Tuesday -> Take a level 1 rman backup
    Wednesday -> Take a level 2 rman backup
    Thursday -> Take a level 1 rman backup
    Friday-> Take a level 1 rman backup
    Saturday -> Take a level 1 rman backup
    Taking level 2 in the middle of the week, so that in case of any recovery you need ao apply changes since the last level 0, 1 or 2

  • Restoring rman backup to sysdate-n while having latest full backup

    is it possible to restore n-5 days database state while having latest full rman backup (n) ???

    Hi,
    You need the archivelog and a backup prior to the date you want to restore.
    So:
    You cannot return back BEFORE the date of a backup.
    You can go back to the date of a backup if you have no archivelog (or archivelog backup).
    You can go back to the date of a backup and anytime AFTER if you have the archivelog (or archivelog backup).
    You can go prior (depending of the retention) if you use flashback (flashback log).

  • Hello RMAN backup problem.....

    Hi there,
    We are haveing a setup of Windows Server 2003 with Oracle 10g Rel2 and Veritas NetBackup Ver 5 MP 5 is being used to trigger the backup. On 1st of July 2007, backup failed for the first time. Error was RMAN-06059:expected archived log not found, lost of archived log compromises recoverability. No one paid attention then, I am looking into the same last couple of days.
    I have certain questions.... as I am not big on RMAN.
    1) Is it possible to have an RMAN backup without RMAN repository.
    2) I have taken RMAN backup with having a separate repository and having a catalog to the database to be backed up.
    3) I do not find any rman repository over here, so this point one comes into picture.
    4) If it is possible how to synchronize the archived logs.
    5) start the rman backup again.
    Please help.

    Hi Alanm,
    I was away for few days. Thanks for the update, that it is possible. In this senario please tell me the exact steps how to do. So that I can implementing the same as a backup procedure.
    When I said that it should have been supported with the current setup, which is using VERITAS backup procedure and has a policy for bakup. As we do not have a RMAN repository I wanted to figure out how to resync archive logs that are missing from its location to the VERITAS.
    I want to take a full RMAN backup with current archived logs as starting point. Also I will like to give backup set name as I want to. Which I think is possible.
    So lets ignore the sync part. Please write to me as to how should should I start RMAN without its repository.
    Please do reply.
    Thanks
    Shiva

  • Incomplete Recovery Fails using Full hot backup & Archive logs !!

    Hello DBA's !!
    I am doing on Recovery scenario where I have taken One full hot backup of my Portal Database (EPR) and Restored it on New Test Server. Also I restored Archive logs from last full hot backup for next 6 days. Also I restored the latest Control file (binary) to their original locations. Now, I started the recovery scenario as follows....
    1) Installed Oracle 10.2.0.2 compatible with restored version of oracle.
    2) Configured tnsnames.ora, listener.ora, sqlnet.ora with hostname of Test server.
    3) Restored all Hot backup files from Tape to Test Server.
    4) Restored all archive logs from tape to Test server.
    5) Restored Latest Binary Control file from Tape to Test Server.
    6) Now, Started recovery using following command from SQL prompt.
    SQL> recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
    7) Open database after Recovery Completion using RESETLOGS option.
    Now in Above scenario I completed steps upto 5) successfully. But when I execute the step 6) the recovery completes with Warning : Recovery completed but OPEN RESETLOGS may throw error " system file needs more recovery to be consistent " . Please find the following snapshot ....

    Please Let me know why my Incomplete Recovery using Archive logs Goes Fail ?
    Atul Patil.

    oh you made up a new thread so here again:
    there is nothing wrong.
    You restored your backup, archives etc.
    you started your recovery and oracle applyed all archives but the archive
    '/oracle/EPR/oraarch/1_9624_601570270.dbf'
    does not exist because it represents your current online redo log file and that is not present.
    the recovery process cancels by itself.
    the solution is:
    restart your recovery process with:
    recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
    and when oracle suggests you '/oracle/EPR/oraarch/1_9624_601570270.dbf'
    type cancel!
    now you should be able to open your database with open resetlogs.

  • RMAN backup slow

    Hi,
    I have a Production Database (10204) running on HP Unix (B.11.11).
    Daily morning 6AM, a full RMAN backup runs. The db size is only around 225GB. But it takes 4.5 hours to complete.
    The syntax which I use is given below.
    RMAN> run {
         allocate channel ch1 type "sbt_tape";
         allocate channel ch2 type "sbt_tape";
         allocate channel ch3 type "sbt_tape";
    send
    'NB_ORA_CLIENT=jjcprd04-back.backup.ncsus.jnj.com,NB_ORA_POLICY=JJCPRD04-RMAN';
         backup
         format 'bk_%s_%p_%t'
         (database include current controlfile);
         sql 'alter system archive log current';
         backup
         format 'arch_%d_%s_%p_%t'
         (archivelog all delete input );
    Is there a way to increase the speed of this backup? Currently the backup is way too slow as it takes 4.5 hours to copy 225GB of data!
    Thanks!

    I'll start by stating that backups directly to tape are generally quite slow.
    I'd still recommend moving to disk backups though... and just archiving it to a tape...Hi Jony,
    You can of course backup to disk. Thats a common solution. But you have to deal with space more than everything. In addition to that backing up to disk does not free you from moving/copying your data - depending on your backup strategy - to a long-term storage.
    So you have two different and not conjunct backup operations: the rman backup itself and the job which backups the rman area to another media.
    In recovery cases you might end up with RMAN requesting older backupsets which are not on disk anymore. This will most probably lead to recovery failures and manual intervention which is not desirable in recovery scenarios.
    Another point is the control of the data flow. Backing up via a MML (i.e. "to tape") does not necessarily mean "to tape". Instead it means "to the backup software" which is responsible for managing the backup data. Common scenarios involve backing up the full backups via SAN directly to tape and backing up the archivelogs or incremental backups over LAN which will be stored by the backup software on a hard disk and later copied and/or moved on to tape. The data flow (to SAN / to disk / whereever) is solely controlled by the backup software.
    The advantage here is one continuous backup and restore job. The backup software deals with "where is my saveset located" and requests automatically the needed tapes or disks in recovery scenarios. This makes recoveries far more flexible and comfortable.
    Regarding the throughput i have set up a rather large OLTP database ( 12 TB currently) which is backed up with EMC Networker. Full backups are written via SAN directly to tape. The average speed with four LTO-3 drives is approx. 550 MB/s (the tape drives compress the data in hardware; the database itself is text-only and seems rather good compressable). I guess thats not too bad.
    you can also compress the BACKUPSETS (this generates a little more CPU but less network IO)He said he is on HP-UX. These kind of CPUs tend to be not that fast. Using compression is an option worth testing but there is another point to test when doing compressed backups: The RESTORE TIME.

  • Rman backup taking daytime

    Hi
    I would like to take the full rman backup of the production database during the business time ( during day)
    Is it reduce the performance of the database? if yes please provide the justification or any docs or any link

    Hi,
    Impact is due to high I/O during backup. It your prod server have enough juice left to take care of increased I/O , then you can take RMAN backup during day time. It is all about your priority. Mostly backup is done during off hours so that Prod users are not impacted due to high disk I/O.

  • If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use?

    Hello,
    I have a database 11.1.0.7 with 8TB. Block change tracking is enabled.
    At the weekend I take level 0 backup and during the week level 1 cumulative.
    For some weeks the level 0 backup is failing, so I only have level 1 cumulative backups taken every week day with a 4 weeks old level 0 backup.
    If I need a full rman restore which backups will it use? Will it be the last level 0 backup with the last level 1 cumulative?
    I ask this because grid crontrol tells me that the recent level 1 backups input size is smaller than last week level 1 backups and in between I dont have any level 0 sucessfull backups. Shouldn't the input size of level 1 cumulative increase until the next level 0 backup ?
    The grid reports:

    From http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmvalid.htm
    Validating Backups Before Restoring Them
    You can run RESTORE ... VALIDATE to test whether RMAN can restore a specific file or set of files from a backup. RMAN chooses which backups to use.
    The database must be mounted or open for this command. You do not have to take datafiles offline when validating the restore of datafiles, because validation of backups of the datafiles only reads the backups and does not affect the production datafiles.
    When validating files on disk or tape, RMAN reads all blocks in the backup piece or image copy. RMAN also validates offsite backups. The validation is identical to a real restore operation except that RMAN does not write output files.
    You can monitor what RESTORE VALIDATE does.
    Make precautions, so you do not damage the production DB!!!

  • RMAN Backup Issue when Full backup file was missing

    Hi,
    On : 11.2.0.2 version, Recovery Manager
    RMAN Backup issue
    Last week we had the NFS Issue where we backup the files onto NFS.
    The problem occurred in the below sequence
    Saturday the backup was successful
    Saturday before deleting the backup files they are copied to tape
    Deleting the backup files via OS command
    Sunday Full backup started but due the NFS issue backup failed(Killed the instance and restarted)
    Did the RMAN Incremental backup which worked on Monday
    On Tuesday RMAN started complaining and started doing the Full backup.
    no parent backup or copy of datafile 1 found
    no parent backup or copy of datafile 3 found
    no parent backup or copy of datafile 24 foundSony any idea why the Incremental backup worked on Monday but not on Tuesday
    Regards
    NM

    Ok here is why I would like exact filenames..
    1) to speed the time of recovery. I am much more familiar with traditional recovery methods than RMAN, and while I myself installed and suggested RMAN for backups, our other (11i) database does not use RMAN and so I am more familiar with traditional recovery. So to be able to recover quickly I want to have these files as close as possible to the original names so that I can use my standard script (from a trace file) to recreate the control fiile. If I can get RMAN to spit out the filies with original names but keep RMAN for making the backup, I may ditch the rman bacjup script in chron and write a traditional hot backup script which copies the files the old fashioned way.
    2) to reduce cloning time. The RMAN duplicate command is not as good as I thought. I was actually easier for me to restore RMAN backups first to a box that has all the same paths, and THEN shutdown (cold) these files and copy them cold to another server, and restore from there. Agaiin if I can get the original file names, I could choose to do recovery either way (RMAN or traditional) in a real emergency instead of being forced to use rman.
    3) to be able to switch to a backup file in the FRA without having to rename it. Seems logical if it is already named correctly.
    thanks ! Marvi

  • How to find out when last rman backup was made in 9i

    Hello,
    i have an oracle 9i database running on windows here. Is there a way to find out when the last rman backup was done with a sql query?
    I would like to create a job inside the database that regulary checks if a rman backup ran sucessfully instead of using scripts in the operating system.
    But i only know about commands in the rman utility (that i can not execute as a job, right?) - is something similar possible with for example sqlplus?

  • When I use migration assistant to move all my data from my Macbook Air to my Pro, it uses the last full back up not the last partial back up. The last full backup is two months old though. Both machines are running Mountain Lion. How do I get my latest 1

    I need to move my data from a time capsule that backuped my Macbook Air (which has been destroyed by liquid damage) to my Macbook Pro. The Air and the Pro both run Mountain Lion and I have a clean installation on the Macbook Pro.
    I used Migration Assitant to move the data across but while I have back ups of my Air up to 24 hours before it was destroyed, the migration assistant only wishes to migrate data from the last full back up that it finds which is 2 months old.
    Please can you advise how I can restore the latest data to my Macbook Pro.
    Many thanks.
