Last upgrade killed KDM keyboard/mouse input
Hi, I performed a pacman -Syu last night and a few packages were upgraded. Now, when I reach the KDM login, it does not detect keyboard or mouse input. However during the boot process it detected the keyboard properly. Of course, now I can't use ctrl-alt-f1 to reach a VC from the KDM screen.
The relevant snippet of pacman.log is below. I took a look and I tried downgrading a few packages from a livecd: xproto and xorg-xinit, but without success. I actually cleared my pacman cache a while ago because of a pacman error, so I don't have very many package backups unfortunately. Perhaps somebody can pinpoint the package that is giving me all this trouble?
Thanks!

Alright, disabled KDM and logged into virtual console and startx. Same issue when I get into X/KDE, keyboard and mouse input not detected. Any idea as to which package might be the culprit? Unfortunately I am away from home for a couple weeks and can't get to my backup clones...

Xorg 1.8 upgrade and no keyboard/mouse [solved]
Well I took the plunge and did a Suy for the 1st time in 6 months or so today... all went well but I have no keyboard or mouse. I have read all the info on the modular configs and opted to stick with my original xorg.conf. Below are my xorg.conf and an Xorg.0.log. Any help is appreciated.

Running vmware-user-suid-wrapper stops keyboard/mouse input
I'm attempting to run Arch under VMWare Fusion 3 in Mac OS X. I have previously run Arch on a variety of Windows and Linux machines using VirtualBox without issue. (I would use VirtualBox on the Mac as well, but it's performance is incredibly slow.)
I followed the instructions in the Wiki here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_VMware
However, when I run the command as listed in the guide:
$ ls -l /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper
the wrapper's permissions are
-rwsr-sr-t 1 root root
rather than what is shown in the wiki. If I then attempt to execute vmware-user-suid-wrapper, the system stops accepting input from my mouse and keyboard. Executing the command via sudo does nothing, nor does running chmod 4755 as suggested in the guide.
Any ideas?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

[solved] resume from s3 by keyboard/mouse input
PC wouldn't resume via keyboard input. It works after a BIOS reset now. I must have set a wrong option somewhere.
I also had to do "echo USBE >> /proc/acpi/wakeup".
Last edited by demian (2010-05-06 15:25:46)I tried with [OS] and the USB devices do receive power during sleep but can't bring the computer out of sleep.
Can anyone with BIOS 1.6 on a 890gxm confirm that the USB box is available?

Yup, that selection is grayed out and I cannot even select it, it just passes right over it. Unlike the cell menu where its gray but you can still select it and change the voltages.
I will try switching to [OS] and hopefully that helps. -
Hi,
I dual boot and it's been a while since I last upgraded. I booted into Arch, updated everything, and used the system for a few days before rebooting (perhaps a bad call). I just rebooted today and my login prompt is like this:
((none)) tty1
(none) login:
But my keyboard does nothing. No alt+f* to get to a different terminal, no nothing. I have to hard kill the machine. I've tried twice but would prefer not to do that more than I have to. The second time, fsck didn't work so I booted into the Arch install disk and ran it manually. I tried to chroot into my Arch install and re-run pacman -Syu but got transient server failures. Not sure what all needs to be in place to try and do that, though.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I get the same behavior with arch and arch fallback. I boot to login prompt, not directly to X so it's not anything to do with that, at least not that I would figure.
So far, the only thing I've been able to find is from 2007 (LINK) but it seemed related to X. I'm going to check rc.conf next time I boot up but wanted to see if there's any other suggestions from someone more experience before I boot up again and potentially have to hard kill.
Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

Somewhat embarrassingly, I just found out about manually maintaining *.pacnew files today when researching an unrelated issue. It made me wonder if that was my problem. Perhaps something is goofed in /etc which would explain a ton.
I'm in OS X right now but will reboot shortly and try to fix this issue.
The keyboard issue is troubling as well, though. Some have reported no logins, but often it's a PAM or login manager issue trying to go into X directly. I'm doing no such thing and literally can't get *anything* to work on my keyboard. That makes me wonder...
If I were to boot into the Arch CD and try to run pacman manually... what do I have to do other than
# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
# chroot /mnt
I tried that yesterday but failed. I'm wondering if I have to mount some other items for that to work. /proc? -

Yes, I know that, but I ever work with the right mouse button,
because selecting groups and subgroups with double click make some confusion for me.

Keyboard Shortcuts missing after last upgrade
Almost half of the System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts are not showing up as <Unknown Action> after the last upgrade. I noticed this because my shortcut for terminal no longer worked. I also had a problem with how the last upgrade changed my /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop file... However, even reverting to the original compiz.desktop file I had built, this issue isn't resolved.
Looks like you now how to open up compiz-settings and turn on gnome-compatibility plugin
That would resolve.
If not you can use "commands" to set any command you like...
[Edit] You are using compiz, right?

Multiple USB inputs - Keyboard/Mouse, Novation Remote, and Mackie MUC Pro
Im running a Macbook Pro, 10.4 with Logic 8. I just got a Mackie Universal Controller Pro and also use a Novation Remote 49. Ive got an additional 20" screen, with the USB inputs as well.
Im trying to hook up:
- External keyboard and mouse
- Mackie Universal Control Pro
- Novation Remote
If I plug in the Mackie and the Novation directly to the laptop, everything works. Of course, this then doesnt allow me to plug in the keyboard/mouse as there are only 2 usb ports on the laptop.
Since Im using the external screen, I have the additional usb inputs on there. So, I plug either the mackie or the novation into one of the usb ports, and then the screen/aux cables into the other. Then I plug the other controller into the screen.
With this configuration - one of the controllers wont be recognized. I generally get a message about reassigning or not reassigning them as well.
Regardless of which I choose, the second controller wont come up. Using the midi preferences and controller parameters within Logic doesnt seem to do much either.
Whats the work around here? If I get a multi USB hub, will this fix it? Im wondering why daisy chaining these pieces doesnt allow the midi to be properly routed or recognized.
Hopefully this makes sense and someone has the solution! Thanks.Hey - Thanks for the quick response.
'Why don't you leave the controllers connected directly to the computer, and connect your keyboard/mouse to the screen's USB ports?"
Problem is - there are only two USB ports on the compute. In order for the external displays USB port to work, it has to be plugged in to the computer via USB as well. I have the mouse plugged in to the qwerty keyboard, but they both need to be plugged in to a USB port somewhere regardless.
Am I missing something?
It seems like the problem is really trying to plug an external controller in to an apple displays USB port (so that could be a power issue, although the Mackie is self powered, or just general connectivity).
Based on the above, suggestions? -
MacBookPro Upgrade to 10.4.10 - Keyboard/Mouse/Touchpad Not reconized
Hi all-
I have a very strange problem with my MBP. I've just come back from Europe, so I decided to upgrade my system to 10.4.10 and the security upgrade from june/july (I don't really remember).
The installation went smoothly, except ONE BIIIIG problem.
After the reboot, my OS doesn't reconize anymore my Keyboard/touchpad or even my external mouse. In fact, it seems that nothing is powered anymore. The caps lock button doesn't light.
I tried to boot on the backup DVD and repair autorization. There my keyboard and my mouse are working.
I'm using now my Vista bootcamp partition. Keyboard/mouse and touchpad working perfectly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my work laptop (it's why I waited so long to upgrade, to be sure).I am experiencing a Bluetooth linking problem with my Titanium PB, using a D-Link DB-120 adapter, and my Logitech MX900 mouse. Oddly enough, the Logitech Cordless Elite keyboard works fine with my system. Only the mouse fails to link (it pairs just fine). Like other people on this forum, the linking problem developed in the upgrade from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4.
The mouse cannot link automatically. I have that sometimes unplugging the D-Link adapter causes the mouse to automatically link. Also, toggling discoverable off->on->off causes the mouse to link. Also, using the keyboard first will cause auto linking, and the mouse follows.
Trashing preferences, or leaving "discoverable" in a particular state has no effect on the linking problem. Rather, a state change in "discoverable" seems to initiate linking. This may a caused by a coding bug at Apple, since nothing else has changed. Everything worked as expected under 10.4.3.
Hopefully Apple with fix this linking problem, and Logitech will market a 100% Apple compatible keyboard soon. Good gracious - their bluetooth keyboards are already 95% compatible - is the extra 5% that costly? -
I've setup archlinux for the first time and everything seems to be working but when I launch LXDE I have no keyboard/mouse. Although I can ctrl+alt+F1/2 to get back to console and then kill it w/ ctrl+c.
There were 2 Xorg tests in the wiki the first one didn't do anything (blank screen, no input) the second seemed to work (opened a terminal w/ mouse and keyboard support).
I've tried using both input hotplugging and also just the xorg.conf (using hwd -xa to generate xorg.conf w/ hotplugging disabled)
this is an on older laptop, idk if that matters.hal is installed and i think setup correctly (considering when running xterm w/ hotplugging enabled i have mouse and keyboard support). xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse are installed.
hotplugging:
With hotplugging enabled testing via X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf fails. Testing via setting ~/.xinitrc to exec xterm results in a terminal with mouse + keyboard working. Setting ~/.xinitrc to exec startlxde results in LXDE apparently loading correctly (graphics look ok) however I have no mouse/keyboard.
log: http://elvis.rowan.edu/~petzin02/Xorg.0 … ug_enabled
w/o hotplugging:
Disabling hotplugging in xorg.conf results in the X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf test failing same as above. The xterm test loads a terminal but I have no mouse or keyboard. LXDE same as above, appears to load ok but no mouse or keyboard

Hello there. I'm using Archlinux with core+extra repos (xorg-server 1.6.3 and intel drivers 2.8.1). Today I've tried to update to xorg-server 1.7.1+xf86-video-intel 2.9.1 drivers.
After X restart I've got strange screen (Acer One 110 netbook), seems like it vertical divided and I can use only left half of it. But at bottom right corner I can see icons of gxneur and xchat (if running) on stalonetray. All other right half of display as "black hole" - can't see windows moved there and so on.
Keyboard and mouse also doesn't work. Updating xf86-input-keyboard/mouse from testing repo can't solve problem. Also I have "Option "AutoAddDevices" "disable"" in my xorg.conf. So..I've tried to back to previos versions of xorg-server and intel drivers.
Keyboard and mouse are works now, but screen is still vertical divided.. It looks like there is strange transparent "always on top" window at right half of screen, which hides all other windows under it, but couldn't be seen itself.
So.. what can I do to take back working X?AndyRTR wrote:When you want to use packages from testing repo you need to -Syu ALL packages. There are also new keyboard and evdev drivers and more. You should read around how to deal with upgrading Arch and how to use the testing repo. It's not recommended and expected to work when you only pick a few packages.
Ok. System upgraded from testing repo. Keyboard and mouse are works. But strange area on screen is still there. It's a strange framebuffer or smth same I think.
Here is screenshot: http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/306/ … 4x600s.png
Area with "OPENBOX" text is it. There are no "EE" in Xorg.0.log

[Acer c720] No touchpad since last upgrade
Hello,
Since I've last upgraded I've lost support of my touchpad. Touching it has no effect whatsoever. My USB wireless mouse works perfectly.
I've been using the modified kernel "3.15.5-1-chromebook" since the beginning. I tried upgrading this kernel with the aur/linux-chromebook package, but it hangs at some point during the kernel compilation.
At boot time, I now see this error : "usb 1-4: string descriptor 0 malformed (err = -61), defaulting to 0x0409"
When I list /dev/input/by-id, I don't think my touchpad appears, though the webcam and USB wireless mouse do.
Any ideas ?
Thanks !Well, I have the similar problem. After installing OS 4.0 on my Ipod Touch (3d G - 64GB) I can not connect to the internet. Ipod DOES connect to the wi-fi (the signal is strong) but when I try to use Safari or Icq or You Tube or any other application that requires an internet connection, it says that it's not connected to the wi-fi! (the strange exception is skype - it WORKS, I don't know why). So I cannot connect neither to Itunes nor to App Store. Everything was fine, just before last upgrade. I really don't know what to do! I've read all the articles concerning this problem and have done all the things they advise but nothing helps. (I've been using the same router all this time & made no changes to the settings, so it's not about the router but surely about the upgrade)

[SOLVED] lxdm autologin won't work since last upgrade
Hi,
Since last upgrade, lxdm won't autologin anymore.
I had a lxdm.conf.pacnew file wich added only a commented line that I added into the conf file, wich does look like this :
[base]
## uncomment and set autologin username to enable autologin
#autologin=dgod
autologin=Olaff
## uncomment and set timeout to enable timeout autologin,
## the value should >=5
# timeout=10
## default session or desktop used when no systemwide config
session=/usr/bin/startlxde
#session=/usr/bin/openbox-session
## uncomment and set to set numlock on your keyboard
# numlock=0
## set this if you don't want to put xauth file at ~/.Xauthority
# xauth_path=/tmp
# not ask password for users who have empty password
# skip_password=1
## greeter used to welcome the user
greeter=/usr/lib/lxdm/lxdm-greeter-gtk
[server]
## arg used to start xserver, not fully function
arg=/usr/bin/X -background vt1
# uncomment this if you really want xserver listen to tcp
# tcp_listen=1
# uncoment this if you want reset the xserver after logou
# reset=1
[display]
## gtk theme used by greeter
gtk_theme=Clearlooks
## background of the greeter
# bg=/usr/share/backgrounds/default.png
## if show bottom pane
bottom_pane=1
## if show language select control
lang=1
## if show keyboard layout select control
keyboard=0
## the theme of greeter
theme=Industrial
[input]
[userlist]
## if disable the user list control at greeter
disable=0
## whitelist user
white=
## blacklist user
black=
Since there were no uncommented lines added, I assumed it would make no difference.
Edit :
Now, the system goes to the login screen instead of autologin.
lxdm brings me to my session if I log in however.

Not sure why OlaffTheGreat uses LXDM, but I use it because you get it for free as part of the LXDE group, and I'm too lazy to change it. My security is the 30 to 40 character passphrase I need to unlock my encrypted drives. Then having to type in an 8 character easily guessed user password is beyond annoying.
I just checked my pacman cache files and it looks like the upgrade to 0.4-1-25 is when I first got the error (currently listed as 9 days ago which would be about right). I upgraded, booted and got the login screen that I was not supposed to. I had just merged the pacnew file so it was fresh in my head and made the changes I described. Booted again and got the autologin and I didn't think another thing about it until I saw this post earlier today. Upgraded again this weekend to 0.4-1-27 with no problems. -
FASTER RESPONSE FROM keyboard/mouse actions?
1.42 GHz PPC G4, 1GB DDR SD Ram (4200 rph HD)
How can I DECREASE computer RESPONSE action/time to day to day activities?
It is not clear what 'slows down' software/computer responses and causes the spinning balls in relatively simple actions.
My usage is not 'heavy' nor 'complex'; Typically Mail, Safari, FoxFire, Word 2007, TextEditPlus,
QuickTime (music on occasion). Occasionally Adobe Reader and Photoshop Elements. Safari often more spinning balls than others.
By turning OFF USB an external HD with switching Power Supply that helps avoid delays. But what
else can be done?
I choose to stay with Tiger 10.4.11 - and do NOT chose to go to a later version of the OS.
Is there a "faster response" time for later versions of the Mini?
Given that my first Mac was a 400k floppy machine with MacWrite and MacDraw - in relative terms we I do now is like a supersonic jet... but mine needs a booster -
ideas??Your computer's list of items in-use, per Activity Monitor, tell you
what is running and while these are Active, give an idea of how
much of the computer's configuration (hard/soft-ware) resources
are being used. Also, the Activity Monitor can tell you the load
of Virtual Memory and actual Chip RAM demands of Apps.
The interface of USB mouse and keyboard can act slowed-down
when the computer resources are running loaded. Even with up
to 75% hard disk drive free-space (unused, except for system
use as Virtual Memory and application temp or swap space) my
computer with an 8GB HDD can also, at times, have a slow key-
board and mouse.
If you have more than one browser window open, or run Office
and some other apps at the same time, the overall load on the
Mini G4 (with the 1024MB max RAM installed) can be critical.
The virtual memory write/read cycles to the hard disk drive
increase, and this will also add to a lag when there is a rush
of demand on diminishing resources; plus, a tired old HDD.
Do you occasionally log-out of the main user account and log
back in? This can sometimes help free-up RAM and other use
of system resources, without having to restart the Mac.
How often do you restart the computer, & do you leave it to sleep
when not in use, or do you power it off? Just curious.
As the computer gets older and the hard disk drive more worn,
it may be running warmer and slower; less efficiently and tired,
this lag may be more apparent and point to a need to replace
the internal hard disk drive with a new, larger & better spec unit.
In some instances, there had been a controversy over which was
faster to the computer's processor and RAM (system bus) - be it
a 400 Mbit FW400 external hard disk drive, or a hard disk drive
on the computer's own bus. Some tests, machine series dependant,
showed a variable; with some FW400 enclosures running slower
than the internal computer's hard disk drive.
I've found both slower and faster (depending on the computer)
using an external HDD in FireWire400 enclosure, vs the native
drive; with even a 7200 RPM 250GB HDD running thoroughput
slower than an internal 5400 RPM 80GB drive; but not always.
Do you use a powered USB hub with the peripheral items your
computer is attached to, when running the Mini? For mine, the
better setup was to use powered USB hubs, with the keyboard
plugged directly into the Mac (for startup keyboard combo access)
and the mouse plugged into a port on the powered USB hub.
To note, if there is an issue with this set-up, to troubleshoot the
powered USB hub and have a spare keyboard & mouse available.
Usually, an over-whelmed USB port in a computer will give you a
warning message implying an under-powered state exists, & near
the total possible output of voltage to the USB port is approached.
The USB bus can only support a limited ceiling; there also is a limit
on FW port loads, and devices exceeding that amount will affect all
items on their respective bus. (Example why self-powered is best.)
When you went to the AppleJack download page and clicked on
the link to get the download to start, does your browser show you
a Downloads list and ask you where/how you want the item saved?
I have mine set so I can see any/all items, choose to install them;
& have the .dmg or other image file on the desktop where I can
see it. (In 10.5.8, the default is in a Dock location for Downloads.)
How the browser is set to handle downloads can affect results.
If your computer has been acting oddly, there may be some
kind of file corruption or data corruption causing issues in it.
This link, in Firefox, goes to the download item for AppleJack
directly, in my browser, the default is set and asks me what
I want to do about it. The main option is to accept it and then
it will download to the desktop (Tiger 10.4.11) as a .dmg. It
will not open, and does not display some kind of picture:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/files/AppleJack/AppleJack-1.6/AppleJac k-1.6.dmg/download
You should make a good backup, a bootable clone of your Mini's
entire hard disk drive contents, test it well, and then consider a
course of maintenance and repair of the internal hard drive; or get
a new replacement hard disk drive and upgrade the Mini with it.
Only 5 interruptions here, in the course of this reply to the question.
(Could be worse; some days they can be hours long; or weeks.
There is a story, non-computer related to the reader, going on.)
{Spindown Fix software has been tested in Mac OS X 10.2.3 only.
The older software suggested, may help if the external is going to
sleep if used as a boot startup volume; since once a external boot
FW goes to sleep, the computer may not see it when it awakens.}
The Mini is sort of like a portable computer, in that the hard drive
gets a thorough work-out and it has limited upgrade capabilities.
So, for a hard disk drive to last 3 to 5 years, is lucky run. At least
the unit isn't being hauled around while asleep, as a 'Book may;
and isn't as likely to be dropped from the lap while it's running...!
+{Yes, it's a long post. Sorta like a Totem.}+
Good luck & happy computing!
