LDAP performance vs iPlanet LDAP?

We have 20,000 worklist users, and wonder if we should put them in the embedded
WLS LDAP, or the iPlanet LDAP. Is there performance benchmark numbers to compare
WLS LDAP with other 3rd party LDAP? Thanks.

I researched a similar issue for several days. I finally found a fix by adjusting the following keep-alive params in the magnus.conf. Of course, you will want to monitor performance and adjust accoriding to your load:
KeepAliveQueryMeanTime 1
KeepAliveQueryMaxSleepTime 0

  • Performance of iPlanet 4.1 vs iPlanet 6.0

    Hi,
    We have upgraded from iPlanet 4.1 sp9 to iPlanet 6.0 sp5 on Solaris 8. We have noticed that performance has been degraded to the point where we are now going to go back to iPlanet 4.1.
    We use a custom service plugin that creates dynamic html based on the incoming url. Under iPlanet 4.1 it averages about .2 seconds per page generation. Under iPlanet 6.0 it averages .9 seconds per page. Both tests are done when there is no other load on the server. I know I am dealing with tenths of a second, but we have a 2 second SLA with our clients and we receive around 500,000 http requests per day with about 100,000 being requests for our service plugin.
    The servers are both configured pretty much the same. When I look at the .perf page for each server I see the following for the same 10 requests on each server:
    iPlanet 4.1
    Avarage Total Percent
    Total number of requests: 190
    Request processing time: 0.0001 0.0224
    iPlanet 6.0
    Average Total Percent
    Total number of requests: 157
    Request processing time: 0.0012 0.1896
    The Request processing time is almost 10x as much for iPlanet 6 for the same requests.
    What can I do to get this to be the same level as iPlanet 4.1? Has anyone seen this before and has a way to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Poor performance of iplanet 4.1 with netscape 4.79

    Hi , We have developed an application which has a controller servlet. All requests are handled by this controller servlet and the request is forwarded to a JSP page.
    RequestDispatcher rd = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher(forwardPage);
    rd.forward(request, response);
    Now this JSP has multiple JSP includes <jsp:include/>, and each JSP might access a database to fetch data. Now my question is, this application runs on iPlanet Web Server ver. 4.1 on Windows 2000, JDK 1.2.2. Accessing the application thro' IE or Netscape 6 and above is very fast. But Netscape 4.79 does'nt seem to work. It just hangs the client system and CPU usage shoots up to 100 %, "Not responding" status. But after a long time (around 40 - 50 secs) the page shows up. What is the problem here ? My client uses only NetScape 4.79. Is there any way i could speed up this application on NS 4.79 ?
    Thanks in advance
    chanakian

    Total guess here -
    You're making heavy use of tables, and the JSP isn't provind a Content-Length header.
    Otherwise, no idea.

  • IPlanet performance information required (for sizing a new system)

    iPlanet performance. I am currently sizing a nre system and need some information around the performance of iPlanet. For example, the number of pages served against CPU usage. Does anyone know if there is a standard out there that records this information (similar to TPC for database performance). Cheers. Neil

    Hi,
    If you are planning to go  with EP 7, then installation master guide can help you.For EP 7 you need
    1)Oracle 10.2.0.2
    2)WAS java or ABAP
    3)EP installation master DVD(sapinst.exe)
    4)Support Packs (for e.g SP 10)
    This installation has KMC inbuilt that means you need not to install unlike EP6,Once installation is done you need to apply for license on https://service.sap.com --> key & requests,on this request,SAP will send you license file, it will be a TXT file, you only need to upload it on your server.
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Ameya

  • Performance comparison of J2sdkee1.3.1's JMS and iPlanet MQ 2.0

    I am evaluating two JMS APIs: The free one comes with J2sdkee 1.3.1 and the iPlanet Message Queue for Java 2.0 (free for development and evaluation, not free on Production environment).
    I created two JSP pages running under Tomcat 3.3. One JSP page is calling a Java class 1 which uses j2sdkee1.3.1 JMS API: it creates InitialContext() and lookups for QueueConnectionFactory & Queue, then sends a text message to the Queue.
    I did a little performance improvement by putting this process into a static method init(), so it will be called only once. The latter request will only send message.
    The second JSP page is calling a Java class 2 which doesn't use JNDI, instead, it calls the new QueueConnectionFactory/QueueConnection classes provided by iPlanet MQ API.
    I found out that InitialContext() call and lookup process is taking quite a long time in the first case. After that, sending message is quite fast. However, if "j2ee" is shutdown in the middle, the JSP page can't recover unless I restarted Tomcat server.
    The performance of iPlanet MQ API is pretty good even if the QueueConnectionFactory/QueueConnection classes are created for each request. And it can recover after the Broker is restarted.
    Anybody experienced in using J2sdkee1.3.1 JMS API? If you know a better way to improve performance other than the static method init() which can't recover, please share your information. Appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Ye

    Your performance comparison should be identical in all ways except for the particular server you are trying to evaluate. which should be relatively painless, given the use of JNDI.
    At the very least, ignore the JNDI lookup in your first test.
    I have found the j2ee JMS provider (the free one) to be quite slow, and also have found a bug with the shutdown and startup process changing the message order. which is a fundamental error.
    I have used IBM MQ (websphere MQ) and found it to be very fast and worked as expected. I have not used their pub/sub product (which i suspect is based on Talarian.)
    I favour servers built in native code, and integrate using JMS. just like I prefer Oracle over a pure Java RDBMS, but like the ease of integration offered with JDBC.
    I would avoid webstyle start-up companies like Iplanet. That joint effort seems like a desperate attempt at reviving Netscape thru technology, rather than thru a business concept.

  • LDAP- large dynamic groups - performance

    A dynamic group is to a static group what a view is to a table
    A group is to its members what a table or view is to its records.
    When the memebrs of a dynamic group is very large are there any performance problems or is that eliminatable by some indexing means?

    Just an FYI ...
    I found out from iPlanet that this is a bug in SP3 and will be fixed in SP4.
    In the meantime, you can call tech support and get a patch.

    I discovered today that the dynamic group does not seem to work for
    form-based authentication with iPlanet App Server. I have a group,
    Employees, in my LDAP server, and it has a dynamic group configured as
    ldap:///o=douglas.co.us??sub?dcRoles=ttEmployee, where each user has a
    custom attribute, dcRoles. I can test this dynamic group and expectedusers
    are found.
    However, I cannot authenticate with a user in this group when "Employees"is
    my configured role to authenticate with.
    If I open the group Employees in my LDAP Server, and under the Members,
    Static Group tab - I add a user, I can authenticate with them.
    I also tried adding "ttEmployee" as well as "Employee" to my deployment
    descriptors - but no luck. The method of adding a user (above) is the only
    way I found to work.
    Can someone shed some light on this?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    => This is not the appropriate forum for directory server questions, this forum deals with messaging/calendar/instant messaging server.
    => If you have a core file you need to log a Sun support case to have that core analysed and get a bug-fix/patch. This of course assumes you have a support contract.
    => Please provide the version of directory server you are running in future posts.
    => iPlanet directory server doesn't need regular 'maintenance'. The only operation you may need to perform is a reindex of the caches (if you have done a lot of changes).

    I am trying to configure the mapping between my iplanet ldap server (source) and OID (destination) . My iplanet dn is uid=sharam,ou=People,dc=xsj,dc=xilinx,dc=com and my OID dn is cn=sharam,cn=users,dc=xsj,dc=xilinx,dc=com
    My mapping file looks like this:

  • Users found, but not displayed in console with WL8.1 SP5 and iPlanet LDAP

    Hi all,
    I've just installed WL8.1 SP5 and have recreated my domain configuration, as happily used by SP4.
    All seems well until I add an iPlanetAuthenticator via the console. The console reports that it has been created successfully, but when I browse users, I am told that the console is displaying the first 51 of the 413 users found, but only six are displayed, those six being in the internal LDAP.
    If I re-order the configured authentication providers and put my iPlanet Authenticator first, entries from iPlanet are displayed, but a search to find users in the internal LDAP return nothing.
    When I say return nothing, it does not fail! No error is returned and on looking at the HTML I find that blank table row(s) are placed in the results page, their number corresponding to the number of users found in the 'invisible' LDAP directory.
    My application works - meaning that users are being found, but not being able to see them through the console is a show stopper. Has anyone else come across this problem? Can anyone help? At the moment, I'm stumped as to how to solve it!
    All the best,
    Tim.

    Hi all,
    This problem was raised with BEA support and a patch produced.
    All the best,

  • IPlanet LDAP configuration in Weblogic 8.1 SP3

    We use iPlanet LDAP provider for app authentication. We need only the authentication and no authorization. However when we do not specify information in Groups and Membership tabs, and provide only User information, authentication fails. Does iPlanet provider need Group and Membership information for simple authemtication?

  • Iplanet LDAP Configuration in Portal

    Hi All,
    I was trying to configure my UME with LDAP - iplanet. (Sun one Directory Server) in SAP Netweaver CE. I downloaded the xml file using config tool.
    1. dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_readonly_db
    2. dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_not_readonly_db
    3. dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_deep_readonly_db
    while one should i use? How do i know whether iplanet uses a deep or Flat Hierarchy?  When i try to use the
    dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_not_readonly_db. on click of save changes, it gives me some "Technical error". But Validate connection in LDAP Server Properties is working fine.
    "Test Connection successful".
    But server not starting after restart.   How else do i change the UME Configurationfrom Database to LDAP? What is the xml file to use? Is there some other configurations to be done?
    Thanks,
    Divya

    Hi Divya,
    Try to contact the systems team who is responsible for maintaining the LDAP in your company. Then call tell you if you use deep or flat hierarchy.
    The you need to decide if you want to connect to LDAP only for read only purposes or if you want to update any thing on the LDAP from the portal and have write access.
    1. dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_readonly_db - FOR READ ONLY ACCESS TO LDAP WITH FLAT HIERARCHY
    2. dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_not_readonly_db - FOR WRITEABLE ACCESS TO LDAP
    3. dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_deep_readonly_db - FOR READ ONLY ACCESS TO LDAP WITH DEEP HIERARCHY
    You are getting the error when using dataSourceConfiguration_iplanet_not_readonly_db.xmL most likely because the system user that is used to connect to your LDAP might not have write access on the LDAP.
    Also, please note that some LDAPs will require an SSL connection between portal and LDAP for writing any thing to the LDAP.
    In that case, you will have to setup SSL between EP and LDAP.
    Read the documentation for further help:

    Hope that helps !!

  • LDAP groups and WebLogic Roles - Urgent ( weblogic 6.1 sp1, iPLanet 5.1)

    I have 2 questions and these are very urgent :-
    1. Where the mapping can be defined between LDAP groups and WebLogic Roles. I have
    2 groups in iPLanet :- Contarctors and employees and I have 2 security roles in weblogic:-
    contractactors and employess. How do I map LDAP group contractors to weblogic security
    Role contractors? Similarly for employees ?
    2. I have not defined contarctors and employeees under People container in IPlanet.
    e.g. The RDN for contractor is
    uid=1234,ou=dir,dc=orams,dc=com
    Can I still use the defualt security realm of weblogic (the WebLogic Security Realm
    under People ) OR I have to write my own custom code ?
    3. I am planning to use Roles insetad of groups to manage the logical grouping in
    iPLant. Can I still use the groups in WebLogic security realm ( in the configuratin
    parameters ?)
    This is very urgent ....so if any of you can throw any hints that will be greatly
    appreciated.

    Hi Ariel,
    The driver is bundled with the product in WLS 6.1sp1. you don't have to
    download any additional driver. Use it as you normally would only thing to
    remember is if you are trying to write standalone java code then you have to
    have weblogic.jar in your classpath. For the rest of the info follow the wls
    docs for 6.1

    it are for WLserver 5.1.
    What has to be done to do this with 6.1 sp1?

  • LDAP Performance Tuning In Large Deployments - dir_chkcredentialsonreadonly parameter

    Calendar users are experiencing long delays in logging in or updating a meeting
    with many attendees or dates. This is especially notificeable after migrating
    from calendar server 1.0x to calendar server 3.x.
    <P>
    At this time, calendar performance can be improved by up to 30% by reconfiguring
    the calendar server to bind to it's directory server either anonymously or with
    a specific user. The default is to bind as the user requesting directory
    information.
    <P>
    There is a parameter that can be added in the server configuration file by
    editing the /users/unison/misc/unison.ini file. For anonymous binds
    adding the dir_chkcredentialsonreadonly line to the DAS section:
    <P>
    [DAS]
    dir_updcalonly = TRUE
    dir_connection = persistent
    dir_service = LDAP,v2,NSCP,1
    enable = TRUE
    dir_chkcredentialsonreadonly = FALSE
    <P>
    For binding as a specific user, also add the following to the LDAP,..,...,,
    section:
    <P>
    [LDAP...]
    binddn = dn
    bindpwd = password
    <P>
    Going forward, we are working on other changes in the next versions of the
    Calendar Client and Calendar Server to improve performance. Please check with
    your Netscape Sales contact for announcements on the availability of these
    versions.
    <P>

    Thank you very much, I am looking from now for a good performance Tuning book writen by Jonathan Lewis. I dont think Jonathan can come to Spain and give lessons...Anyway I will email to him...
    But, could you please clarify 2 points to me
    1- Should I modify manually memory parameters like buffer cache, shared pool, large pool etc...if those areas are spotted Small and areas causes of performace problem in the AWR, ADDM or ASH reports even if the memory is automatic managed ?
    In the case of yes, Why Oracle named it "Memory automatic managed" if I have to set some values of memory manually ?
    2- When ADDM report suggests me to increase the SGA size; from where ADDM got this recomandation?. I mean is it recomandation based on statistics collected of Both Oracle and OS ? I am asking this question because, from our report I ran 3 weeks ago, ADDM suggested me to increase the SGA to 10GB (total memeory of the serve is 16GB), I did the change and from that moment the server is SWAP... and now ADDM report suggests me again to increase the SGA to 12GB .
    Best reagards
