Learning OO Concepts & Java2  for mainframe developers - prefer free

I believe I have read through all of the postings which came up during a search for "object oriented" and I don't believe my question has been answered.
I am putting together a training plan recommendation for my boss (I work for a US state agency, therefore I need to watch the $$$ and would prefer solutions which are free) for teaching OO and Java to the entire applications team. About 70% of the developers are mainframe programmers with no knowledge of OO and the rest are client/server developers all with at least a VB background and varied knowledge of OO. My goal is to come up with a plan which will provide everyone with a good and sound foundation in OO (not just learning about "what is an object") and then incorporate learning Java 2 (eventually moving towards J2EE). I'm pretty convinced that between the "new to Java Programming Center" site and others, we can achieve the J2 knowledge for free. I'm not so sure about the OO knowledge. That's where I need your help!
I have perused Bruce Eckel's book and even he himself has said that he wrote this based on the reader's fundamental understanding of C, so this is probably not the route to take.
The Sun site has a free tutorial, "Learning the Java Language", which appears to just tackle a few of the concepts.
Is there anything else out there or a more elementary question - is this the right approach to take (or should we learn OO by way of learning J2)? I am ideally looking at free stuff first, but would entertain books, CBT's, etc. which are not costly (already know about "Developing Java Software" by Winder and Roberts and an Object Technology book by Taylor).
Help!!! Thanks! Janet

Hi Janet,
It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. I'm curious why you're looking to separate the OO concepts from the Java ones. Is your goal for everyone to learn Java in the end? Or do you just want everyone to learn about OO concepts and only some of them actually learn Java? I can understand wanting to have a strong OO foundation before moving to Java, but I think the two can often be taught simultaneously.
Another thought -- do you think it would be easier to have one person (I'm guessing you) do a crash course on OO and Java first and then teach it to everyone else? Or are you planning on having everyone go through it together? I would think if you could nail the basic concepts on your own, you could then effectively pass your knowledge onto the others.
Unfortunately I don't have any books to recommend, but I did do a quick search on Google and I found a few tutorials that focus mostly on OO concepts. When it comes time to learn Java, I'm pretty confident that the Java Tutorial on Sun's website is a good place to start. Books like Java In A Nutshell (O'Reilly) are good because they're part textbook, part reference manual, but that might be out of the question because of the money. In any case, check out some of these sites. They seem to be a step in the right direction; and if nothing else, they're free!

  • Is learning EP is useful for Bi developers

    Hi Experts,
I am working as a SAP BI Developer, now some companies giving preference that who have knowledge in EP. So, give me some sugessions and which areas are useful in EP for us and if you guys have any material please forward me
    Thanks and Regards,
      SVS

    Hi,
If you want to improve your resume, you could of course learn EP.
But it is quite a different subject, and BI is just one of the tools using EP, after all
Maybe you should better, if you are a BI developper, learn all the functional aspects of BI, linked to SAP ERP.
Or better yet, more and more projects are insisting on performance aspects on BI !
If you become a technical expert on performance issues on BI, you'll be the king of the world....
    Best

  • Apple tools for game developers

Gaming technology has driven Windows to where it is today. In many aspects I see Windows as nothing more than a very robust gaming platform. Microsoft's Direct X 10, though proprietary, is a very formidable tool for developers. Why doesn't Apple do more in courting and aiding gaming developers on their platform? I am seriously perplexed by this. I realize that the game developers that design for the Mac are very dedicated gamers who would love nothing more than make great gaming experiences on the Mac. Most put their hearts and souls into making games happen for the Mac, with little to no support from Apple.
I've done some research into OpenGL implementation on the Mac and I'm surprised at how much Apple is missing in this arena. Especially since so many of their core UI technologies are steeped in OpenGL. Yet Apple tends to be slow in fully adopting and exploiting the newer OpenGL technologies as they emerge. Apple could be a very strong driving influence for OpenGL, but they seem, to me anyway, to have a sort of detached interest in making it happen. For instance, OpenGL 2.0 was ratified on October 22, 2004 and yet Apple has only implemented 70% of the feature-set??? OpenGL 2.1 was ratified on December 1, 2006 and they have only brought 30% of the features to OS X? I look at the drivers for the various cards and compare it against PC drivers and Apple only implements about 75% of what PC drivers have. This has got to be horrendous for game developers.
I see all of this as a critical missed opportunity on Apple's part. I know that Mac game developers have to jump through a lot of hoops to bring PC games to the Mac because they simply do not have the tools that PC developers have. In my opinion this is inexcusable. Apple has a tremendous opportunity to make a singular gaming experience on the Mac. They have a vertical marketspace that has the potential to turn their machines into a gaming juggernaut, yet they have all the appearances of being laxadasical about the whole concept of gaming.
I can only hope that Apple reads this and, more importantly, cares enough to do something about it.

I use photoshop (you can get 6.0 at ebay for ~40-50 bucks - something similar for free would be gimp -> www.gimp.org), povray (www.povray.org), sodipodi (www.sodipodi.com), gmax (www.discreet.com), some selfwritten commandline tools for creating sheets and pngout for compression.
If you need alot of animations it's much easier if you go the 3d route: modeling, texturing, animating. One model = tons of animations. It's also easy to create new animations if you need em. [I'm talking about pre rendered sprites like everyone knows from donkey kong]
Well, you'll need alot of time until you can create decent art. And then you'll need alot of practise, because you are just way too slow.
Here are some examples for whoring and showoff purpose ;)
    raytracing (povray)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/ludo_mockup8.png
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/hq2cpma2r.png
Pretty hard to do. It's all math. You have to write code in the SDL (scene descipting language). Note: the board on image 1 is drawn with Java2d functions - however, the color values were taken from a previous rendering.
    pixelated (mspaint, photoshop... whatsoever)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/evil.gif
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/killbill4.gif
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/favicon2l3.gif
Takes damn long. Even that tiny 16x16 icon took more than half an hour. You'll need lot's of practise for being fast (eg 30mins for image nr2 would be fast).
    svg(scalable vector graphics - sodipodi)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/eye9c.png
Takes also rather long. However it's easier and faster to do than pixel stuff. Also creating sub frames isn't that much work.
    photoshopping(uuuuh... photoshop and the like)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/tr_menu.gif
This one for example was done in some minutes. Noise, motion blur, some text there, rendering filter... done!
Oh and having a scanner is nice. You can use scanned sketches for everything (except povray heh).

  • How To Install Platform for Multiple Developers on Single UNIX Machine?

    Hello,
What is the best way to install the WL 8.1 Platform for multiple
developers on a single UNIX machine? These developers may start
    concurrent instances.
The problems I see are that the log files generated by Workshop would
be shared among concurrent users, permissions would need to be set so
that the user that is running the instance that creates the log files
will need to create the file with permissions that everyone can use. Are
there any other issues to doing this?
I could not find the information on this in the documentation.
    Thanks

I was referring in particular to the logs that are created by Workshop
itself (in the workshop directory). It creates workshop.log and netui.log.
    Raj Alagumalai wrote:
    Steven,
which workshop log file are you referring to ?
the workshop log files are usually saved to the domain directory.
If the developers are each going to start their own server instances then
    there should be no issues.
The best option for you is to create multiple domains for each developer.
They will share the same workshop installation, but they will each have
    their own instances.

  • Does the new AIR SDK support iOS 64-bit for Flex Developers?

I saw that the new AIR SDK(December 18, 2014) has supported iOS 64-bit, but it was only supported in the new compiler. See this:
Please note that support for creating universal IPA binaries will only be available in the new compiler. The legacy compiler is not (and will not be)
compatible with iOS 64-bit. Because of this, it will be removed with version 16 of the AIR SDK. To ensure that Adobe as well as third party tools
are able to work with this AIR SDK, the -useLegacyAOT option will continue to exist, but will be internally mapped to the new compiler.
AFAIK, the Flex uses the old compiler and AIR SDK for Flex Developers doesn't include ActionScript 2.0 Compiler. As a Flex developer, what shall I do?

    Hi,
I guess, you might be packaging IPA on windows machine.  Please try latest beta at http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/air.html which has iOS64 support on Windows machine as well.
    Thanks

  • How to get murrine dust theme to work? (new concept theme for ubuntu)

    hello!
i just want to try and install the new concept theme for ubuntu - DustTheme!
but i don't get it to work. it uses the murrine-engine - but when i want to select it via gtk-chtheme or gtk2_prefs it does not sets the colors or anything else. when i hit apply, the standard ugly gtk-theme will be selected.
anyone here who actually uses the theme?
    more information:
    DustTheme Ubuntu Wiki
    installed packages:
    gtk-engine-murrine 0.53.1
    also tried: gtk-engine-murrine-svn rev 94

Hrm, I'm not quite sure what you mean.  I don't see "profile" anywhere in the gtkrc - everything seems to be labeled as "style" already.

  • New tips for Java developers

    Hello to all Java developers!
I’m new to the forum and I wanna say all of you hi. Wanna give you a link to one very interesting article on java development (Video Conversion System Implementation)
    http://techzone.enterra-inc.com/video/video-conversion-system-implementation/
I want to discuss it with you here.

In what way is that a tip for Java Developers? In what way is it related to Java Programming?

  • About job postings for Oracle Developers Please Help.

    Hi to all.
This is not a specific doubt about development, is for employment.
This is not a Job Posting.
I have 2 years of experience developing in Oracle FOrms (Web ann C/s),with
another tools (like Jdeveloper),etc with a Bachellor degree in System - Engenering
Here in my country(Peru) the pay per hour is almost 5.9 to 6 US$ (a total per mounth is
    between 1000 and 950 US$).
As you can see the standar level of salary is very low.
Even that level is considered "high" for our standars. (A Visual Basic /Sql-Server developer gets a 4.00 uS$ per hour).
I have seen (in the Oracle job postings page) amounts like 60 -50 US$ per hour for Oracle Developers.
So I have some questions for you , the real people who works in Oracle enviroments.
-That amounts per hour are really true?.
-IF its true (in countries like USA or CANADA) how much can I save ,having a normal life?
-In have passed the first OCP Exam,(3 left), but it is really necesary to get well-payed a Job?
-There are some many enterprises recruiting foreigners for IT jobs but (if somebody knows...),there are some good ones and the bad ones.Have you been heared about the bad ones,, and who are they??
    Please I need your feedback.
Its very important to me any suggestion or comment because I'm planning to work outside.
    Thanks for your attention.

  • Best practices for multiple developers?

I am currently working on a fairly large application. At this
time, I have been the only developer on it, so it hasn't been a
problem in keeping all of my files up to date or anything. However,
I know in the future some new blood will be brought in to assist
me. To this end, I'm looking for suggestions on the best ways to
set up the project for multiple developers, especially in terms of
    using VSS.
So far, I have the main HTML, JS, and FLA/SWF files located
on a web server - easy enough to create a project in Flash and
synch up with VSS. But what about the supporting .as files? The
help files seem pretty straight-forward on this kind of thing, but
I am curious about other people's experiences.
    Any suggestions for me? Thanks!

    HI,
You can install it on one common desktop, for example you can use citrix program neighborhood. you can install a common desktop in citrix program neighborhood and every time you need to apply some patches you can apply over there. so that you dont need to install it on each and every users desktop. so who ever needs business objects client tools they will be accessing through citrix program neighborhood.
    I hope its clear.
    Thanks,
    SK.

  • Problems with the ADF Tutorial for J2EE developers.

    Hi guys.
I have completed the ADF tutorial for 4GL developers withhout any major hickups. Now I have been doing the ADF tutorial for J2EE developers (locate here http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/adf_tutorial_1013/index.htm).
I ran into some problems around chapter 6 and after failing understanding the errors I loaded up the applicationscripts from the tutorial. However, I get an error from this script. I have tried to load up both end of chapter 5,6 and 7 and get the same error. So now I am at a total loss. So, I am turning to you. I have copied the entire error message below.
Unfortunately JDeveloper translates some keywords to Norwegian and I have tried to translate them back into english. Forgive me if its not 100% accurate but i think you will understand the keyword. I've translated these four keywords:
    - Internal Exception
    - I/O-exception
    - Errorcode
    - Exception
    The error message:

  • Installing BPEL PM 10.1.2.0.2 for OC4J Developers on AIX

    Hi
I'm trying to install BPEL PM 10.1.2.0.2 for OC4J Developers on AIX. I downloaded the as_aix5l_power_bpel_101202.cpio and ran the "./runInstaller" from the "bpel_oc4j" directory. As per the installation instructions(it did not specifically have instructions for AIX, only Windows and Unix), i should get a screen in which i can choose the Type of Installation as "BPEL Process Manager for Developers", but this option never showed up, instead after accepting the path this dialog came up.,
    Error :
BPEL Process Manager for OracleAS Middle Tier will run on top of a supported Oracle Application Server 10.1.2 j2ee and Web Cache orPortal and Wireless instance. This location does not contain this instance. Please refer to the installation Guide for supported versions. Please select a new Oracle Home that contains a supported instance.
Has anyone installed the Developer's version of the BPEL PM on AIX?
Or is the download available is actually only for Middletier?
    Alll help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Sam

I also have a customer who is running BPEL on AIX / WAS 4.0. He has reported some issues while running some specific Java codes (JDK 1.5). Has anyone faced any issues with BPEL deployed on WAS having issues due to compatibility?
    Any help is appreciated.

  • JasperReports for Java Developers book just released.

JasperReports for Java Developers book by Packt Publishing is for Java developers who want to create rich reports for either the web or print, and want to get started quickly with JasperReports to do this. No knowledge of JasperReports is presumed, although obviously familiarity with Java, SQL, and XML are assumed where they are required.
    More about this book :http://www.packtpub.com/JasperReports/book
Sample chapter from this book "Creating Dynamic Database Reports"
can be downloaded from : http://www.packtpub.com/files/SampleChapter-JasperReports.pdf

Any one that might be able to help me here? Much appreciated. Thanks.
