Learning visual studio

I'm a beginner and i know very little about programing ( i did a class at school with vb 6.0 ). i want to know what language i should learn first and the best way to do that.
any advice about how to start programing would be very helpful.

Hello,
What to learn should coincide with your goals. If this is simply a hobby learning VB.NET is an excellent place to use while if your goal is to work as a professional developer look at the classifies to see what employers are looking for. Both languages
are fairly equal so it comes down to where you want to go.
Personally I started with VB.NET because the job market in my area was seeking out developers with this skills in this language but three years ago the market changed to C# so that's where I am now. In your area it may be completely different so
as mentioned above, check out the job market if this is for work while on the other side of the coin by all means go with VB.NET and when comfortable go and learn C#.

  • Blend for Visual Studio's HTML/CSS WYSIWYG editor only usable for Windows 8 apps, NOT for web apps?

    Hi there,
In the process of learning Visual Studio (VS) and ASP.NET, I initially thought that I could use Blend for VS's seemingly great HTML/CSS WYSIWYG editor to visually design the HTML pages and CSS for a web app developped with VS, whether it be with ASP.NET MVC
or Django (using Python Tools for Visual Studio).
But now it dawned on me that Blend for VS seems to only be meant to design HTML/CSS for native Windows
    8 apps, and not
    web apps.
Can someone confirm that this is indeed the case?
Thanks a lot in advance for clarifying this point for me.
PS: Maybe this a dumb newbie question, but from the outside, it seems rather counter-intuitive to offer a top-notch tool for web
standards (HTML/CSS) edition (Blend for VS), all integrated with a top-notch tool for web development (VS) but prohibiting the web developer community to leverage the productivity gains of both
the former and the integration. This is especially puzzling given that the latest components of the ASP framework (MVC, SPA projects):
    - Pushes for reliance on HTML elements and CSS instead of ASP elements and Skin files;
    - VS apparently also does not provide a visual design page view for ASP.MVC projects, which is sure to make many development teams wary of migrating from web forms to MVC.

I believe this the case, but I'm not familiar with asp.net development. As you point out: html is html so you can edit and copy the code. That said, the Windows Store apps forums are specifically about writing Windows Store apps. For discussion
of writing ASp.net apps and the best tools to use for that please post in the asp.net development forums on
    http://asp.net.

  • Visual Studio report with tabs (Worksheets in Excel) broken up by a specific field?

I am fairly experience with SQL, but am somewhat new to using Microsoft Visual Studio. However, it is very similar to other SQL programs I have used a lot before. I have Visual Studio 2008.
For my company, I use Visual Studio in creating BIDS reports that are then uploaded to our Learning Management System (LMS). You can then run the reports within our LMS, and also export them to Excel.
What I am trying to figure out is if you can set the report to create separate tabs (worksheets), broken up at a certain field, when exported to Excel.
For example, say I have a report that displays all people and the trainings they have overdue. Say I want it to create a separate tab for every department. For example, one tab would say "Finance" and would be all the Finance people and the trainings
they have overdue. One tab would say "HR" and would be all the HR people and the trainings they have overdue.
The main report is already created, but currently just lists all data, sorted by department. It does have parameters so you can narrow it down to just a certain course or set of courses, just a certain department, etc. Does anybody know if this is possible?

I apologize for not replying sooner. Thank you so much for your help. It looks like this will solve my problem. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to re-visit this, as I have lately been pulled into a number of high priority tasks, causing the
need for this to be pushed back. I will re-visit this again when I have a moment and give this a try. Thank you.

  • Adding Entity Framework Crashes Visual Studio 2010/2013

I'm having problem with using the Entity Framework version 6/5.  Whenever, I create the new solution and try to use the Entity Framework, Visual Studio crashes and restarts itself.  Scenarios are:
    1) Add Entity Framework by Add New Item-> Entity Framework-> go through wizard and finish...Crash.
    2) Add by Nuget console-> Install-Package Entityframework...Crash.
    3) Reload the solution from either #1 or #2, run Nuget console->Uninstall-Package Entityframework...Crash
    4) new solution, nuget package manager, select Entity Framework->Install...Crash.
No matter what I do, and how I try to install entity framework, it keeps crashing on both VS 2010 and VS 2013.  It's frustrating when I'm trying to learn the technology.  Below are the Application error log I see in the Event Viewer:

    Hi,
To achieve these are the steps that I had followed :
    1. Add the document Library path into Central Admin -> Application Mgmt -> Manage Service App -> Excel Service App -> Trusted File Locations
    2. Add Documnet Library link to Trusted Connection Proivder
    3. Open Visual Studio as Run as Administrator
4.Create an SharePoint 2013 Empty Project.
    5.Add Service Reference : http:\\<server>\_vti_bin/excelservice.asmx
    6.Service added successfully
7.Create a class file and add the Service Reference namespace
There is no such class as ExcelService to call.
Please let me know if somebody knows how to open the Excel file into C#(2012)  either using ExcelService or any other way to open. I tried old methods of Sharepoint 2010 server but it's not able to access classes.
    Requirement is :
Need to read the excel sheet  from Document Library and transfer all data into DataTable.
    Please help asap.

    Hello,
    Welcome to MSDN forum.
I am afraid that the issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses
the usage of Visual Studio IDE such as WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System
    and Visual Studio Editor.
Because your issue is about website, I suggest that you can consult your issue on ASP.NET forum:

    Arend

    Hi Arend,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
Since this forum is to discuss: Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance
Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor. Based on your issue, I think that the issue is more related to the programming. So I’m afraid that it is not the correct forum for this issue.
To help you find the correct forum for this issue, could you please tell
me which kind of app you want to create? Is it winform app or others?
If you want to code for a winform app using c# language, I suggest you
can consult your question on specific
WinForm forum so that they can share you something for you to start.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Visual Studio Community 2013 does not show database explorer

I am a Newbie who wants to learn web development. it seems in older version of visual studio, when you add a database item in solution explorer there is a database explorer.
but now in my visual studio 2013, if i add a database item, there is no database explorer to let me browse table or others below. Why? I installed SQL express and Visual Studio on windows 8.1 x64
Also any pointers to free tutorial on the internet that lets me learn and practise working with database in a web application?

    Hello Lenny,
Can you see Server Explorer in your VS? What about show us a sceenshot so that we can understand your problem.
I do not have VS 2013 Community right now but in my point of view you should have related components. I will also install VS Community later and share you some info.

    Hi k7wi,
Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.
Based on your issue, could you please tell me if you create a video in a web page from ASP.NET application and then you could not see the video in the web page after you press "Start Debugging" ?
If yes, since this issue is more related to the ASP.NET application and I am not the ASP.NET developer. So I suggest you can post this issue directly to the ASP.NET forum:http://forums.asp.net/ , maybe you will get better
    help.
If I misunderstanding your issue, please tell me more detail message about your issue.

  • Help with C# Errors (Visual Studio 2013)

Hello, I am working on a console application in Visual C#, with Visual Studio 2013. I have been experiencing two specific errors several times, but I am just beginning to learn C#, so I do not know the cause of these errors or how to fix them.
I am using a console class (Console.WriteLine) and it is telling me that "The name 'Console' does not exist in the current context." I do not know what this means, or what is causing it. Because it is referring to the word Console as a "name"
I think I may be incorrectly using the term "Console," but I feel like I have no way of knowing so.
I am also receiving an error telling me that  "A using clause must precede all other elements defined in the namespace except extern alias declarations." Again, I have no idea what this means. If anyone could provide some help or explain to
me what is causing these errors, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

    Hello,

But your issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses
the usage of Visual Studio IDE such as WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System

Because this is an issue with Oracle data access on VS, I would post issues to Oracle forum:

    What should i do?
    sorry for my bad english

You do know that win 8.1 preview will expire on Jan 15th right?  Preview is a beta build and if I were you I wouldn't worry about VS not installing until you upgrade to the released build of 8.1

  • Visual studio lightswitch takes very long time (hangs for 20 sec) when changing entities properties in screen design

hi, I have lightswitch project that is growing up every day. Now it has 200 database table and about 450 default screens. When I first started the lightswitch project with few tables
(about 50 tables), it responses very fast. Gradually when I created the screens, the response takes 10 seconds for any changes I made in the screens or on the tables (*.lsml). Now, it takes 20 seconds (-+2 sec) to be able to do the next change!. For example,
changing the group name, entity input type, width, table summary property ,arrange fields in the groups, change display name (which I change the most),,etc. Just imaging that I can change 3 things on a minute! I am using lightswitch with VB coding , but no
programing codes (yet), I uses only HTML screens, no extensions, connected with SQL express 2012 (but I think that has nothing to do with the slowness since the problem is on the screens design time), I have created the project from scratch three times, with
visual studio 2013 ultimate update 3, update 4, and now with Update 5 CTP 1 !! Yet, the same result. Strange that the freezing time is always about 20 seconds!! Any idea why this is happening? Any resolution?! Regards, Hasan

    Hi Michael
again i appreciate your answer ...
i was trying to implement your suggested workaround of my problem, unfortunately, it won't work with me !  i cannot split the
project to smaller modules because of:
all screens are connected to each other's with buttons and clicks (view selected)
i have changed all the "display names" of tables fields (translation). i would have problem in translation whenever i
need to add tables or fields in the database, then i need to repeat that for all modules. i know that i can use other translation method, but i have already translated thousands of words !
i have spent 2 months in 2013 to learn MVC, but i did not like it. it is somehow complex for me. i am a volunteer developer (actually i
    am network designer ).
i may lose the authentication , as i need to log-in to each module separately.
is there any root solution to this problem ; the VS Lightswitch (or IDE) slowness when there
is a lot of screens? maybe in VS2015?
i had great hopes for the lightswitch, and still it is the only IDE that i can use for the "Charity
    ERP" project.

  • Can't update SQL 2014 DB during web publish from Visual Studio 2013

According to Visual Studio 2013 I have "SQL Server Data Tool 12.0.40706.0" installed, which should allow me to update a SQL 2014 database but when I try to publish my web application I get the error: "Web deployment task failed. (Could not
generatedeployment script. Internal Error. The database platform service with type Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql.Sql120DatabaseSchemaProvider is not valid. You must make sure the service is loaded, or you must provide the full type name of a valid database
platform service. Internal Error. The database platform service with type Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql.Sql120DatabaseSchemaProvider is not valid. You must make sure the service isloaded, or you must provide the full type name of a valid database platform
    service. Learn more at:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=221672#ERROR_EXECUTING_METHOD.)" I can update the database fine if I go into the package managment console and run -UPDATE-DATABASE but I don't want to have to go into myweb.config, update it to point to the production
database, run the update command, and then change my web.config back everytime I try to update my database. What do I have to do to getthis working? I had no problems when I was on an Azure DB.

Actually problem seems to be related when web publish to remote server. I tried local web publish to sql2014 db and it works.
For remote server web publish works to sql 2012 express db but when try with sql 2014 express db on same server get bellow error.
Error message "The database platform service with type Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql.Sql120DatabaseSchemaProvider
is not valid. You must make sure the service is loaded, or you must provide the full type name of a valid database platform service."
Any ideea what may be causing it? I have installed the sql server 2014 express with advanced services x86, exact same version as on my local machine, and also restarted server after install. Need install/configure anything else on server like SSDT 2014 to
    make this work?
    Cheers!

    Hey,
I'm learning C#, using a book called "Learning C# by programming games". (2013)
It comes with a zip file containing samples to use in Visual Studio.
(I use Visual Studio Express 2013)
However, opening the .CSPROJ files in the sample folder provided by the book's website results in the error mentioned in the title of this ticket.
I would very much appreciate anyone taking the time to try and help me out.
    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    Erinn

    Hi Erinn,
Could it have anything to do with the fact that the book uses XNA (and the sample projects were created with VS and XNA) and I use MonoGame with VS (since I my computer runs on windows 8,1)?
Yes, that's definitely the problem (I don't know about writing games, but I Googled "MonoGame vs XNA"). First result returned by that search is informative (although it doesn't tell you how to get around the problem):
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21658493/is-monogame-just-xna
I know that doesn't help you, but it tells you that it's a common issue and if no one here can help, maybe some more Googling might turn up something. Actually, after some more Googling, this looks useful:

(UPDATE: especially Part 2, where he explains how to port XNA code to Windows 8 environment).

  • Visual Studio Like IDE for AS?

I don't like feeding the big green monster (microsoft) more
than I have to but I think Macromedia (adobe?) should make
programming with action script more like programming in visual
studio 2005. I program for fun and to be honest, its not that fun
when you use a plain text editor or the run of the mill IDE; But
then I started to learn Visual Basic 2005 (started with the express
edition) and I have to admit, Microsoft has done a very good job.
Programming in VB2005 (or any visual studio language) is super easy
with intelliSense (basically a really cool code completion feature
of the VS2005) among other things. For that matter, why doesn't
macromedia (adobe) allow multiple Action Script languages like
Microsoft .net? This why they can lure the many Visual basic
programmers out there to use Flash for their rich web content
(instead of Ajax). This would allow more people to learn AS faster
as well as get whatever task they're trying to conquer done much
faster (I code really fast and error free in vs2005). Please post
    your thoughts on this!

Yupper. I use SE|PY more than anything else, though other
    choices are
available. It is possible to edit AS files in Eclipse, a
    freeware IDE
developed for a variety of languages (though primarily used,
    I think, for
Java). Depending on how complicated you want to get, you can
    even compile
your AS files with MTASC instead of the Flash IDE. Head over
    to osflash.org
for details on all of this stuff.
