Length of Clips

Hi everyone,
Once I trim a clip. How do I make the duration of it longer? When ever I drag on the clip to make it longer, it just restores what I've trimmed instead of making the clip, itself, longer.
Also, whenever I import a photo into iMovie, it automactically adds a zooming-in effect to the photo. How do I remove that effect so the photo just stays still with no added effects?
P.S. I'm using iMovie HD version 6.0.3
Thanks!

Do you mean slow it down to make the duration longer? You can do that in Video Effects; Faster/Slower.
The other issue is fairly simple but my Mac is in the shop and I can't quite recall the procedure. Someone will fill you in shortly. If you're in a rush you might check the archives. This topic is a regular.

  • Length of clip expands when sending from Final Cut to Motion

Hi everybody. I'm a motion beginner, so pardon me if this is a boneheaded question. I have a clip whose speed has been slowed in an FC timeline. I sent it to motion in order to switch the method of speed alteration to 'optical flow'. The clip in the FC timeline is three seconds long, 62 frames. It's an excerpt from a clip in the browser that is 10 minutes long, 14,000 frames.
The clip opens in motion at the correct length -- three seconds -- and it looks the same as in the FC canvas. However, when I select 'optical flow', the task list says Motion is analyzing 14,000 frames and it finish in 27 hours.
Why is Motion applying the change to the entire master clip and not just the piece that I sent from FC? And is there a way to force it to deal with just the piece?

Because that's what Motion 3 does - analyzes the entire underlying media file. Your options: 1) In FCP, export the clip with handles, import, and replace, then send that shorter clip to Motion or 2) Upgrade to the new FCS, in which Motion 4 only analyzes the section of the clip you are interested in.

  • Premiere pro CC  - still no time lengths on clips

So, I finally broke down and bought CC subscription in hopes of needed upgrades. Great to see thst the timeline now shows changed lengths as you drag one end shorter or longer, but as all other professional editors do now, please can Adobe add standard Clip Lengths to all clips on timeline as an additional option. This request seems to be a "No Brainer" and/but for some reason Adobe continues to leave this important feature out... Why?  (I know it's probably pretty hard to add the codec to the program as I notice that the initial clip 'names' are a floating layer upon themselves that don't scroll with each clip but rather stay on top of the clips on the left side, but I have faith in you that it can be done).

Jim, your assumption is correct.  As you all sould know, being in a hurry iS part of the editing business. Since Premiere is probably one of the only editors that does NOT include Clip lengths (next to or just below the clip name) I am absolutely dumbfounded on how anyone could zip around the timeline with many layers and have to stop everytime to wait for the mouse-over-clip way to see such a simple, essential property of what you are working on. Your 'not understanding' the reasoning for my request here is either missplaced, or you don't live in the 'real world' of editing with clients and producers breathing behind your neck asking for many things at the same time, including partial and total clip lengths.  It's such a "No Brainer" why editors, would need this information simply by looking at the screen, as this REALLY isn't an over-the-top request, and need not affect your editing experience, as this is an 'OPTION' in most all other editors.  Please forgive my intense response. I do not mean any disrespect to you.  Rich

  • I can't edit length of clips!  Help!!!

Hi. I'm using iMovie 6.0.3. I haven't used the program in a few months, and in that time, I believe this update was installed.
I am currently trying to create a photo montage. I have a few photos placed in the timeline (in timeline view). However, the program will not allow me to edit the duration of the clip anymore. In the past, I would place the pointer on the edge of the clip, and it would change to the "move" pointer, rather than the regular "arrow" pointer. It will not change to that...it just stays as the arrow.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a glitch with the new version? I never had this problem before. HELP!!!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to discussions!
In addition to Bengt's great advice, there is a known bug with Ken Burns.
If you were trying to change the setting on photos that already had a Ken Burns effect applied, and you have emptied the iMovie trash after adding KB effects, you will not be able to further modify the setting ( no rendering).

  • Problem: Sequence has different length then clip

I have 2 clips in FCP that I have set in and out values such that they both have the same duration (00:03:11;12). They are 2 different angles of the same event.
When I create a new sequence and drop one of these clips into the timeline, the sequence duration is 6 frames more then the clip it was created from (00:03:11;18).
I can't understand why this is happening. I have done this exact same process with other 2 other clips and the timeline duration matched the clip duration, exactly.
I'm doing this so I can create a composite image from both clips such that one clip is playing in the background while a scaled down version of the other clip is playing in the foreground.
This duration change is a problem because the 2 original clips and the third composited clip are going to be brought in DVD Studio Pro to provide 3 camera angles. In order to create the 3 camera angles, all clips must have the exact same duration.
I don't just want to set an out on the sequence that is 6 frames shorter because 1) I should not have to do this and 2) it may mess-up the video sync between the different camera angles.
    How do I fix this?

I converted these a bunch of clips to DV from other formats. It seems some of these clips use drop frame and some do not use drop frame. The video that was having problems was not drop-frame, but the sequence was using drop frame. When I changed my sequence settings not use drop frame, the timing was correct.
Not sure why there is a difference in the conversions, but at least I know what caused the timing difference.
    Thanks.

  • Batch Change Clip Lengths

Does anyone know how to batch change the length of clips in imovie 06. I have already imported all my pictures (about 300) and want to change their time length. I don't want to have to reimport them, so hoping I can just batch change them all. THANK YOU!!!!

Sure. Just select a clip and press command+A (or choose "Select All" from the edit menu). Click the "Show Photo Settings" button and adjust the duration slider.
Of course, there's a catch if you have unique pan and zoom settings for the various clips -- those unique settings will be lost, and all the clips will adopt the start and end (Ken Burns) settings of that first clip you selected. Of course, there's no problem if a) Ken Burns effects are not employed, and b) all clips are to be shown at the same zoom setting.

  • FCP timeline to Motion 3  "send to" clip length problem

I am having a problem with Motion 3 when I send a selected clip from an FCP timeline to a Motion Project (for some optical flow treatment)
It processes the entire source file associated with the clip- even if I have used a subclip to edit into the sequence in the first place- my source files are long so it takes several hours for a section only lasting a few seconds.
Is there a simple solution to this?
    Thanks,
    Andrew Parker

    Thanks for these replies.
A bizarre design- making a nonsense of the integration from FCP sequence clip to Motion 3 for this treatment.
I'm hesitant to go to Motion 4 half way through a project- especially as there seem to be other teething problems from what I can gather on this forum.
I guess I could also re-ingest at short length those clips that I want to treat with optical flow blending- making it only a last stage process for all practical purposes.

  • Poster Frame and Trim Mode not working properly with post-synced clips

    Hi Everyone-
Final Cut Pro seems to be doing something really odd and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced it and if so what is the fix:
We are shooting a movie on Red with sound coming in on multitrack wav files. We downconvert the R3D files to Prores and then manually sync the tracks in the timeline.
We link the pix and sound and drag them to the bin to make our dailies. They all play, in sync. When we try to set a poster frame the issues begin. If I load the clip into the browser park the playhead on a frame and choose poster frame, the actual frame in the bin is very noticably offset (often by a few seconds).
Also, when I use the trim mode, the frames jump to a different part of the shot during trim. It's like the shot is jumping ahead or back while I hit the frame advance or recede buttons. Once I let go of the button the image jumps to the correct number of frames. But, it's very distracting if I am trying to trim, for example, to just before an actor blinks. I can't trim 1 frame at a time. I have to keep hitting the button, watching the picture jump to a different part of the shot, release the trim button and watch the picture jump back to the now correctly trimmed frame...
As a test I took some of the Prores clips with scratch track sound and brought them into the bin directly from the finder, bypassing the syncing. Using those clips, the trim and poster frames work as expected. Obviously something is going on during syncing.
I assumed maybe because the audio and pix we different lengths the clip was getting "confused", and didn't know where to "start". So, in the timeline with the synced clips, I razor bladed a few shots, linked them, and dragged them to the bin so the audio and video were the exact same length... Same issue.
I have noticed the same behavior on 2 separate Macs so I don't think its a preference or corrupted install issue.
Anyone seen this and have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David

Yes, David, I'm having the same problem under the same circumstances. we're using merged clips made from Prores QTs and multitrk BWF files. In the trim window, the display frame jumps ahead considerably in a frame-by-frame trim, but trims accurately in the timeline. My only work-around has been to use the left/right scrub arrows in the trim window when necessary, which displays the correct frame. Sorry not to have an answer, but I saw a post on another forum from 2007 that speculated it was an FCP 6 bug. Resetting prefs doesn't help.

  • How can I show clip/project clock on screen?

    PE4, Windows XP
I'm working out a storyboard post-shooting with a colleague a thousand miles away (ie: impossible to get together right now). I sent her some DVDs with what I'll call the "raw take" so she can look things over and let me know how to proceed. As we get into more detail on the project she would like to be able to get very specific about length of clips, where to edit, etc.
It would be very useful to be able to give her a set of clips with the project's running clock (is that the right term?) showing on screen so that she and I can be on the same page with our editing. I other words, she could say, "Dude, on Disc 1 use the b-roll starting at 3:32:03 and cut at 4:21:00 and put it in such-and-such scene."  My friend is not versed in video editing, and of course, is not viewing this material on anything but a DVD player and screen.
I've scoured the documentation and don't find any reference to doing this. Is there a way? Is there a plug-in, free or otherwise, available to do this?
    Thanks.

DVDate:  mmmm, well, this one comes from Russia, which gives me immediate pause. No offense meant to our Commrades, but any monetary transactions involving folks in the former Soviet block is an automatic red flag, given the widespread ripoffs and fraud perpetuated on the world from that area of the globe. The price is now shown as 19.95 Euros, which translates to $29.13 on this vendor's site.
Jeez, does it take Russians to figure out how to create and market this when Adobe, a fine, upstanding American firm with massive resources and technical knowhow, can't or won't?
Anyway, I'll look at the other one suggested first. Thanks for the prompt reply and help.

  • Hardcopy of clip information

I am a (very)amateur movie maker and use iMovie to edit my movies. Previously, I worked with iMovie 4 to produce some successful movies. To work with users, I wrote a simple program to create a "clip info hardcopy" for our discussions. The program was easy to write since the project file in iMovie 4 was a text file and I could create a hardcopy which has a line for each clip showing start time, length, and clip title data. iMovie HD has a significantly different way to record this data. I haven't been able to figure out how to decode this data.
Can a similar hardcopy be created for iMovie HD?
iMac Flat Screen   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Can a similar hardcopy be created for iMovie HD?
The iMovie HD project file is text too, but formatted differently. It's a properly list. Each property name (a "<key>") and value can be read in Apple's Property List Editor.app.
Or to read it as plain text, open in TextEdit. (Property List Editor lets you view it as text too.)
Both old and new projects can be parsed as lines of text. Or for iMovie HD, as XML too.

  • Can't fully change clip duration...

    Hello all
My students and I are doing a claymation type project and I am having some difficulty changing the clip durations once I've imported the photos into iMovie. I can get them in and changed down to 0:00:14 but not any shorter. I should be able to set them as fast as 0:00:03... If I change the clips individually, I can set them to 0:00:03, but if I try to change more than one at a time, the lowest is 0:00:14. With 500 odd photos for each group, changing the length one clip at a time isn't really a feasible option. Any suggestions?

Yes, the pics have to be in the Timeline before they can be adjusted.
Great that it's now working for you. As a retired teacher myself, I know what it feels like when things don't work as they should, and you have a disgruntled class breathing down your neck! Good luck with the project - sounds interesting.
Here's an explanation of PAL and NTSC:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL
They are Television Broadcasting formats - your part of the world uses NTSC, many other parts use PAL, and some others eg France uses SECAM. They use differing frame rates, so are largely incompatible with each other.

  • Cannot change time in clip adjustment

I am having a problem altering the length of clips. I have a set of photos and want each still to be 0.3s.
I change the first clip to 0.3s and check "apply to all stills". Some are 0.3s, but others change to 1.3s, 1.1s or 0.1s. When I try to correct each individual still to 0.3s, it just changes back to 1.3s or 1.1s or 0.1s. It is almost as if iMovie wants the entire sequence to be a set time and is fitting the clips to that length.
    Any suggestions?

Transitions generally work by "borrowing half the frames need from the preceeding clip and half the frames from the following clip.
For example, if you had 2 four second photos and added a fade through black transition of .5 seconds, it would take 8 frames from the preceeding clip and 8 frames from the next clip.
    Now you have 112 frames (= .93 seconds) + 16 frame transition (= .53 seconds) + 112 frames = .93 seconds. Total frames = 240, same as before you started.
You may be able to override this behavior for photos only (not video).
Go into File/Project Properties. Go to the Timing Tab.
Select the photo length you like using the slider. Put a check mark on "Applies to all photos".
That should make your project get longer.

  • Why would a 21 minute video only show up as a partial clip in project panel and timeline?

When I import uncompressed AVI file (21 minutes long) into project panel, it shows up as 4 seconds and 18 frames in length. Clip shows the full 21 minutes long in bridge and windows media player. I have rebooted computer and checked for updates. Also shows up as a shorter clip in After Effects. Any ideas?

  • 'ghost' audio clips

Frequently when I edit audio clips in the timeline, the program creates strange nonexistent audio clips, that have zero duration and sometimes only appear in the timeline index.
I find this occurs most frequently when moving audio clips around in timeline, especially when working with grouped (command G) clips.
This becomes a problem when I am trying to see which order I have used music loops in and the timeline index is showing 'ghost' clips, messing around with my order.  Anyone else dealing with this?  Below is an image with an offending clip in the timeline:

I don't know how they came about, but it looks like you may have subpixel length audio clips
Unlike video, audio clips can be resized in smaller than one pixel increments
