  • Xboxdrv without root?

I'm trying to run the xboxdrv driver as a systemd user service (so that I can start the service when I want to use it for keyboard mapping, etc, and stop it when I want to play a game that supports the controller directly via Joydev), but I can't get xboxdrv itself working without root.
I have already set permissions up so I can cat /dev/input/js* without root, but it seems xboxdrv is doing something a little lower-level, something I can't control via udev and permissions. It seems to be bypassing the filesystem altogether and trying to access the controller via something called "libusb".
Here's the output of a few commands that might be helpful:

nomorewindows wrote:This xbox to keyboard feature is it something in the xboxdrv package?   Most programs change the buttons that do certain actions configured from whatever joystick-aware program you are using.  I just plugged my joystick in, and it is located under /dev/input/js0, with input group and 0664 for the mode.  You'll just have to try it to see what it behaves like.  If it requires xboxdrv to even work, it may not do anything.  The linuxconsole package also allows for testing of the joystick interface.
xf86-input-joystick is similar to xboxdrv, except it's tied to the X server, and so it cannot reload its configuration or be enabled/disabled without editing system-wide configuration files and restarting the X server.
I'm sure xf86-input-joystick would work perfectly well for keyboard mapping. But if I'm going to use something that requires root to run and change, I may just as well set xboxdrv up as a system service instead, since that way I could at least still change the mappings and enable/disable it without restarting the X server. It would still require root, though, and that's what I'd like to avoid if at all possible.

  • Let's Be Honest / Save Time: Lenovo T430s (NVIDIA) DOES NOT Support Multiple Monitors

There have been a few comments / complaints / articles around the web regarding the T430s and difficulties using multiple monitors.
But since this capabilitiy is clearly documented in all of Lenovo's specifications and marketing literature, I went ahead and bought an i7, NVIDIA, SSD, T430s with the docking station and all the bells and whistles to facilitate 3 or even 4 monitors.
Well please listen and let's be clear:  IT DOES NOT WORK. Therefore, to be clear:
DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE AND DOCK IF YOU WANT IT TO LIVE UP TO ITS MULTI MONITOR PROMISE.
In the two weeks since FedEx arrived, here is the deal:
    1) I fussed around with the dock and monitors at home and the office to no avail, for most of TWO weekends.  (I am not a beginner).
    2) Then, I spoke to Lenovo in Atlanta's tech support for THREE HOURS.  No results
    3) I spoke to Lenovo's "premium support" (paid) for FOUR HOURS.  No results.
    4) I consulted with a 3rd party expert on mulitple monitors who was kind enough to remote into my machine for another HOUR.  No results.
    5) Muliple parties have confirmed that yes, all hardware is working and yes, everything can be seen in device manager, and yes, the NVIDA card is properly switched on in the BIOS, yes I bought the i7 version etc.
    6) And just in case, yes, we wiped the drive clean for a factory reset, yes we unistalled and reinstalled all the drivers and yes, we even deleted the Lenovo driver just in case the NVIDIA driver was newer or better and yes, we double checked the settings in the BIOS again.
    7) Yes, we tried every connector in the dock AND the laptop:  VGA, DVI, DP and mini DP - in EVERY possible combination.
And NO, IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. AT ALL.  Two screens, take your pick, but THAT'S IT.
Finally, not one but TWO technicians asked me to not quote them (so I wont mention any names) but that in their opinion IT JUST DOESNT WORK AT ALL, EVER, despite Lenovo's claims / insistance that it is configured for 3 and even 4 monitors.
So the final conclusion was only that Lenovo must have rushed this T430 spec / configuration / capability to market (including the glossy brochures!) before figuring out that something is missing in the handshake between the mother board and the NVIDIA card?
Or in the firmware re swithing between the Intel (internal) and NVIDA card?
Or something else which prevents the NVIDIA card from seeing the ports on the laptop or the dock?
In summary 1) you get NOTHING from the NVIDIA upgrade and with respect to more than 2 monitors, IT JUST DOES NOT WORK, AT ALL, EVER, PERIOD and END OF STORY.
I too am a die hard old school Thinkpad enthusiast and with the company's service could match their classic products.
I have an X201 that I generall love, but would appreciate more speed, an SSD and I have to drive at least 3 external monitors, using at least 1920 x 1080 resolution.
Perhaps a W series Thinkpad would work, but I also travel so going up to the T430s was already a sacrifice vs the small size of the X201.
There are some 3rd party solutions but they are expensive and not so sure how plug and play they are with 3 or more monitors - what the T430s and Mini Dock 3.0 are SUPPOSED TO DO.  But they dont.
Not giving up yet, but this has been a real bummer.
    PS
Lenovo was very focused, efficient, and uncompromising when charging my CC for "premium" support.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thors,
Thank you and happy to report, albeit after all the hours and now weekend number 3:
    1) For the moment, I am able to repeat the 3 screen performance using mini DP from the Thinkpad and 2 DPs from the dock to the external monitors
    AND
    2) For the first time ever, I am just now for the first time running the 3rd external monitor from the VGA port on the dock.
That is what I meant by using the various ports on the dock, so that the Thinkpad can simply be docked and undocked without connecting the mini DP - the purpose of a dock obviously.  As stated in other threads and articles, various configurations of the dock ports supposedly work to achieve 3 external screens, but until today was not able to do this.
That is the good news and thank you for all help.
The bad news is I stil have no clear idea why this has been so difficult, or where the problem lives that consumed so many hours of my own time and many hours with Lenovo tech support as stated above.
Some success seems to have happened only after more than one set of LONG updates to Windows 7 (?)
If I can replicate this set up the office (where I have 3 of the same monitors) I will be almost there.
Thank you again to all for help and support.

  • Install JMQ into other directory than /opt/sun/ without root user possible?

    hi *,
i just wanted to know if there is the possibility to install JMQ 4.1 in a custom directory?
AND is there the possibility to install the JMQ server without root?
we do have several embedded JMQ servers inside sun appserver that do not need root or a specific directory why should the standalone version need this?
    regards chris

There is no non-root install available on Solaris or Linux with SJSMQ. (we are looking into it, but we have been waiting for a new packaging system to come out as a side-effect of Solaris 11 which would handle installation in non-root locations, management of packages and patching).
We are also investigating making the packages re-locatable in the next release (so you would still have to be root but you could cleanly install into export or some other location). However this requires generating a whole new bundle of packages and later patches (the current layout is dictated by the fact that we have older releases which ship included in the solaris operating system)
    At the moment ...
On Solaris, you can install SJSMQ as root into another directory (using the -R flag to pkgadd) however the installed directory structure looks a bit nasty (since it would look have paths something like /export/mq/usr/share/lib/imq/props/config.props)
On openMQ, we do have a tar based bundle which can be installed on any system (not as root). The downside is that it is not supported and can not be patched.

I "believe" because I searched ni.com and couldn't find anything about software limitations with cRIO. I talked to a couple people I know that work with cRIO and they said that software version isn't a limitation. Basically you could run cRio with LV RT 7 without a problem.
However I'm not 100% sure about this.
    My advice is:
    Try it and see.

do you have any directories owned by root? I've seen some nfs issues change ownership of mounted directories when they're remounted.
is anything in the /bin/ directory owned by root?
I think you should be safe to chown back to your install user.

    HI
You may use this program copied from a technote 2856-09 to get MAC address in C. Works fine only if arp cache is present though . It
does not talk to the driver directly . May be usefull to you. Compile

  • How to use SAX Parseto paser xml without root element

    Hello,
I have big a xml file(500M) with without root element. How can I use SAXParse to parse it.

A well-formed XML file has a single root element. Your parser can't deal with any other kind. So find the person who produced that file and explain politely that it's no good. (Hitting them with a big stick would be optional.)
You could write a non-XML program that reads it in and creates a new version, wrapped in a single root element, if your supplier can't fix their problem.

We have a ubuntu server for develop in our company and I have a account. I am more familiar with archlinux. However, I can't just tell the system administrator to replace ubuntu with arch, since that would break everything. And I do not have root privilege. So I am wondering would it possible to install archlinux in the home directory, and use it like a virtual machine?

What, specifically, would you like to install to your home directory that you can run with plain user permissions without causing impact to other users.  I am confused as to what you think you want to do..
Something like, install software (including pacman) to home directory via pacman. Start a server by rc.d (I think in this case, sys-V is better than systemd).
For example, I could run this command in ubuntu without root permission, and that ubuntu server didn't install mysql.
    $ pacman -S mysql
    $ rc.d start mysqld
    $ #Or "systemstl start mysqld.service"

  • No Mackie Controller Support??? Seriously???

I have been a loyal Audition user since version 1.5 when I opened my studio 7 years ago. Before that, I worked with Cool Edit Pro. I purchased CS5.5 today only to find out you've done away with external controller support. I cannot tell you how much this angers me! I use my controller every day. What the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks were you guys smokin' when you decided, "Oh, they don't need that old controller, we'll just rip that out. Oh, and they won't need to group clips anymore, either." Huh???
That is arrogance and a lack of respect for us loyal customers who helped make Audition as successful as it has been.
I just put in for a refund and I'll be going back to v3 until I find something else that I like or until the Audition designers get their act together. Someone needs to lose a job over this.

Between Adobe's crappy customer service center (that know virtually NOTHING about Audition, since they are probably not audio types, this doesn't surprise me) and the cajones for them wanting to charge me $39 to resolve an issue after I just purchased an upgrade for both Mac and Windows is absolute insanity.  Add to the fact that there is no controller support for my Tascam FW-1082 like they had with AA 3.0, and I am just plain outright disgusted.  It only proves to me that this new version of Audition was not put together by radio/tv/film production people.  It was put together by techies that know their way around an Apple or PC enough to create something that looks good, but is USELESS for anyone in the industry.  I suggest, in my humble opinion, that you get some PROS on your phone/customer service line who known your product in, out, backwards, and forwards.   I also suggest putting people in the labs to develop this software that are actually in the industry, and KNOW what's needed in a piece of software.  Just sayin.....

I had a really hard time when they were working on the laptop (or thinking about it).  I was using as borrowed laptop, and the pictures were sent to a non-persistent laptop.  Remember, they kept the laptop so long (3 weeks) that I had to buy a W510 to be able to continue working.  So, to answer your question, I cannot find the pictures.
The pictures did not tell me anything, as it was hard to see the substance they were implying was there.  In my research, it appears that both the W500 and the W510 have heat problems, so I think they are finding innovative ways to get out of fulfilling their obligation to service the warranty.
