Lenovo U310: Clean Windows 7 Installation Guide (including Rapid Start and Caching)

Hi there,
this is the first time that I am writing such a guide/tutorial/whatever you may call it – there are probably better ones, but though not being a total computer noob, it took me almost one week to get this pretty (now again) little beast running again. So hopefully this helps some others to avoid such stupid downtimes.
A brief overview on what has happened to my original win 7 Home Premium:
As some may know, this laptop is very well usable as a “Hackintosh” called Macbook clone. So that’s what I did. It turned out to be nice, but I wanted to go back to Windows after a while, using a clean W7 Pro installation to start over. Actually an easy task, format all drives, install Windows, be happy. Just as I had been doing this for years. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real challenge. First, I couldn’t “see” my drives during installation (and thus not install), then I got random errors during installation aborting it at different points and finally rapid start and caching didn’t work. Every time I tried to activate them (after Win installation), it crashed my PC. I even found an (official Lenovo!) guide stating to install W7 on the SSD, which worked, but sucks due to space limitations. Oh and another very nice thing: The SSD showed up during WIN installation (but not the classical hard drive) stating it was about 60 GB. So as you can see, I have had a lot of different tries and errors. Why I didn’t use Lenovo Easy Recover? As said before, I erased all partitions…
Before we start: If you have a good Windows running on the Laptop, do yourself a favor and disconnect the RAID 0 disks using the Intel Rapid Storage Application before(!!!) proceeding. It will make things much easier. And don’t forget to get all you data on an external drive or something.
Ok, now let’s start.
1.)    Prepare a USB Stick with the following driver
         http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21730 (choose f6flpy-x64.zip If you’re running a
64-bit system (standard nowadays), take f6flpy-x86.zip if it is a 32-bit Windows, just download and copy them
into the stick’s root directory) and plug this stick in one of the left side USB ports.
2.)    You’ll need Win 7 on either a DVD (plus external drive, for sure) or (bootable) USB stick
3.)    Connect your drive/stick (with W7) to the right side USB port.
4.)    Switch the computer on, immediately hit FN and F2. That will open the BIOS.
5.)    In the BIOS, navigate to the very right section (“save and exit”) and navigate the cursor to “load setup defaults”.
         Hit enter to approve.
6.)    After that, go to the “boot” tab and disable UEFI-boot.
7.)    Next, go one more tab to the left and set the controller setting to RAID (NOT AHCI or Compatible!!!).
8.)    Navigate the cursor down to “Intel Rapid Start” and hit enter. A submenu will pop up-
9.)    Disable the first entry in that window, that will make the rest be disabled as well.
10.) Navigate to the very right tab, this time hit save and exit.
11.) The PC restarts.
12.) Immediately hit FN and F12 to open the boot selection menu. Select to boot from your W7 DVD drive or USB
        stick.
13.) Click yourself through the whole process of installing Windows 7 until the page comes up where you will have
to select where to install it.
14.) Click on “load drivers” and after a few seconds your downloaded driver should be there. Click ok to use them.
Please do this step even if you can see your drives (SSD Disk 0, 32 GB and HDD Disk 1, 465(<-?) GB) as you
would expect them – otherwise you’re very likely to get an error during the install process.
15.) Now erase all partitions on both drives and select the HDD as the drive to install W7 to – NOT THE SSD!!!!!
        Seriously, don’t choose the SSD.
16.) Windows will probably say that some extra partitions are necessary and so on, click ok and install Windows.
17.) After the installation has finished and you see your Desktop, I suggest you to proceed with the next steps in the
following order to see as early as possible if you are on the right way.
18.) Install the Chipset driver, restart.
19.) Install the Intel Rapid Storage “driver” and check the box where it asks to additionally install the control center.
        Reboot.
20.) Go into BIOS (FN and F2) and enable Intel Rapid Start (the one you disabled in Step 8 and 9)
21.) Boot into Windows.
22.) Click on the Windows button, type cmd and right klick on the cmd.exe, select to run it as Admin.
23.) Now you’ll create a hibernation partition on the SSD. (which by now should be completely empty as we’ve
deleted all partitions in step 15)
24.) In the command prompt that we have just opened, type: (without quotas, for sure)
“diskpart” and hit the enter button
“list disk” and hit the enter button
Now you should see your ssd as disk 0 and your hdd as disk 1
If your ssd is disk 0 (that would be standard), write “select disk 0”, otherwise write: “select disk 1”, and hit the enter button.
Now write “create partition primary size=4096” and hit enter again. [if you have 4GB of ram, type 4096, if you have 8 GB of ram, use 8192]
Now write “detail disk” and hit enter to see the volume number behind the volume that we have just created (it is 4 GB or 8 respectively, should be easy to find), in my case that was “2”
Now type “select volume 2” if your 4 or 8 GB volume has number 2 as well, otherwise use the number you found out in step f. Hit enter.
Finally, type: “set id=84 override” and hit enter for one last time.
It should now say back that the id has been set successfully.
Exit the command prompt. (close)
25.) Reboot
26.) Install the Rapid Start driver. Reboot.
27.) Open the Intel Rapid Storage Application.
28.) Click on accelerate and approve the settings. Two RAID’s will be created. Reboot.
29.) Install the remaining drivers, have fun with Windows Update and that’s it!
Good luck to all of you… And hey Lenovo - wouldn't that have been your job after all these posts showing your costumers in trouble? Just my two cents...
If you want, you can now turn on UEFI-boot in BIOS.
PS: If, after installing all drivers, you happen to see one unknown device in your device manager – this one belongs to Lenovo Connect Software that came with your Laptop. (Updates FB, Email etc when PC is in sleep mode) If you install Lenovo Connect it’s going to be fine, however, I would not recommend it as it is said to use a lot of energy and cause some other problems. So just live with it, your PC is totally fine without it.
Kind regards from Shanghai

Seriously guys, I can't use my 3 days old laptop. Some help would be mostly appreciated. At this point, the network connection issue doesn't show up anymore, it's just a blank screen after reboot. I reinstall windows and do it all over again just to achieve the same result.
Now couple of things caught my attention: as I load the "6flpy-x64.zip" driver from step 14, I get a message saying I need to install signed drivers, because unsigned ones are likely to mess up the system.
Secondly, I could not find any Rapid Storage Technology drivers for Windows 7 (particularly for U310 model), so I use the Windows 8 ones (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031455), which seems a silly thing, yet I know of no alternatives.
Could it be any of these issues to cause my problem? Or smth else? Please help!

  • U310 Clean Windows 7 Installation

I bought a U310 which suffers from a very slow Wifi perfomance. The problem seems to be know in this forum.
Apart from that I'd prefer a clean Windows 7 installation without the "Lenovo overhead" and with my Win7 Professional liscence.
I prepared a USB pen drive to be bootable and tried the setup from the stick. Somehow the Windows 7 setup does not seem to recognize any drives and partitions to install on. I guess I have to include the intel storage driver on my setup usb stick? But on the other hand, shouldn't the normal hdd (500 Gb) be recognizabe for the setup?
In Windows storage manager, I see what I suppose is the 32GB SSD, but its only shown as 32GB.
Any hints on how to be able to fully use the 32GB SSD and install Windows on it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
the method described below is theoretical, I haven't tried it yet:
if you want to use the SSD cahce for installing Windows on it, you have to break up the raid array on it. After that you should see unallocated space.
If you don't want to use RapidStart, you can force delete the hibernation partition to gain extra 8GB space. (note: you have to disable it in the bios too)
Then you sould download the Rapid Storage F6 drivers (x86 or x64, based on your future installation architecture) and copy it on the usb drive.
During windows install, load the drivers from the disk. And install the system on the ssd cache drive.

  • Replacing preinstalled Windows with "normal" and clean Windows installation (T500)

    Hello,
is there any way, how to replace preinstalled Windows with my super-clean installation of Windows? I'm really not happy with partitioning (honestly, I'm using Linux, so I want just Win partition, Boot partition, Extended partition (with root, home, swap) --- no recovery partition, no foobar partition, which just make no sense for me), given features which I don't need etc. I would rather have clean setup of Windows 7 and have computer installed my way. Also I don't like such toolbar things, and crappy ware of Lenovo already installed.
I can backup Windows 7 activation and restore it to new clean installation - so I don't need to buy new disc... But - where can I get that clean Windows 7 Ultimate shiny disc? Do anyone know? Is it possible to download it from MS site?

The preloaded Windows 7 will probably run faster than a retail version due to the EE optimized drivers. Just uninstall Norton, the Office 2010 Starter trial, the additional media software, and you should be good to go.

  • Windows Installer Infinate Looping When Starting CR XI R2

    Post Author: Mark1110
    CA Forum: General
Hi, Our company just got Crystal Reports XI Developer. I installed it on my machine and I noticed there is a newer version Crystal Reports XI R2. I copied it to my machine and installed it. It installed fine, however when I click the icon, the windows installer tries to configure Crystal Reports XI to my machine. I let this run for over an hour but all it does is loop through the same thing. If I click cancel, it does stop after about 4 - 5 times of clicking cancel. I tried twice to uninstall then reinstall the program with the same results. I am using Windows 2000 and Java 1.4.2. After it stops, the program runs just fine. What can I do to stop the windows installer from coming on every time I click on the icon? This only happens for Release 2. The program runs fine by just using the version that came with the CD. Mark

    Hello Mark,
This error is most likely caused by a corrupt software download or bad CD.
    I recommend :
    1.Log in as u2018Computer Administratoru2019
    2. Make sure that no anti-virus program or spy ware is running on your machine.
    3. Close Crystal Reports XI if it is already running.
    4. Manually uninstall Crystal Reports XI from your machine. To do manual un-installation, I would request you to refer to the link given below:
u201C[How to manually uninstall Crystal Reports XIu201D|https://bcp.wdf.sap.corp/sap/sapnotes/display/0001218535]
    5. Copy and paste all the installation files from u2018Crystal Reports XIu2019 CD to your local drive of your machine.
    6. Install u2018Crystal Reports XIu2019 by running the setup file from your local machine.
    7. After successful installation, restart your machine.
    8. Open Crystal Reports XI and let me know what happens

  • Windows 8.1 x64 blank start and apps screen after image

I am trying to build an image with SCCM 2012 R2 (CU1)
I have created a build and capture task, to create a base sysprep'ed Windows 8.1 wim image file.  This runs successfully
If I try and deploy the image, it completes but when any user logs in, they get black desktop wallpaper and blank start and all apps screen. Also they are unable to right click on the start button.
I have run SFC /scannow command and rebooted, still the issue.
I have also build the machine from scratch using the dvd and I don't get the problem.
    Thanks
    Gareth

    Hi,
Since the Windows 8.1.wim file is generated and ran successfully, also you build the image from the DVD, there is no problem, this problem might lie in the process you deployed it .
I think you have added some configuration or something like group policy during the deployment process to customize the wallpaper or desktop icon, System Center will give professional answer about this, I think you can post it at the System Center forum:

    Does that Profiles/2tt76737.default still exist?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Can't install drivers after a clean Windows installation

I am using Lenovo g560 and my current OS is the 64 bit Windows 7. I can't wirelessly connect to the internet without the drivers, but entered the support site from another computer and downloaded the appropriate drivers. At first I tried to install a wireless device driver but and error showed up starting with "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked." I then tried to install the BIOS update, everything went well until at the end I got the error "IHISI: EC write with progress bar error in SMI!" after that the device rebooted itself. I tried to run the BIOS update file again, but now it says "File is corrupt". The chipset driver instalation went fine. After this it still says "The contents of this file cannot be unpacked..." when I try to install a wireless driver.

    hey Nihlathak,
which driver did you use ? Can you pass me the link.

  • I was using bootcamp assistant to install windows 7 via flash drive, i followed the steps, the Windows installation image was installed successfully and the boot camp partition was made andy mac restarted then i got this message "no bootable device insert

"..no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key", i restarted my mac and held options and managed to log in to my OS x again but my windows wasn't installed and when i held options while my mac was starting the usb flash drive wasn't there, what should i do? Also can i restore my usb flash drive to use it as a regular flash drive again?

    Hi Michael!
Yep, I did get this running. Not in a normal way (meaning the easy way). What I did, is that I just created the BOOTCAMP partition in OS X. Just let it format and create the partition where you would install BOOTCAMP.
After that I discovered that via a ISO program (WinClone) you can directly restore a previously created OS X boot image to your current computer. So, I installed a blank Windows 7 to my macbook pro, didint install any drivers and just let it work up then. Then I went back to os X (in macbook pro) and made a bootimage for the BOOTCAMP partition. After that I saved it to my external harddrive and wired it to my iMac. In iMac I just downloaded the same boot-image program and restored the bootimage that I made in Macbook Pro to iMac. After that I made an restart and the bootcamp section with windows worked well with my iMac. Install the bootcamp soft and you can do everything and everything works. FYI, you get the windows working via those steps, BUT if you either delete or do anything to make your bootcamp partition unworkable then you will have to repeat those steps again. But it´s fast non-the-less, so it shouldn´t be a problem for you.
If you didin´t understand anything or something doesen´t add up, send me a letter or a notification.
    Hope this helps.
    Indrek.

  • Why can't I sign into my gmail ?? I tried all the posted suggestions including clearing cookies and cache.

I have tried all of the options suggested on this site and nothing works. I can get my mail on google chrome and internet explorer but not on firefox, WHY????

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:<br>
    [[Image:FirefoxSafeMode|width=520]]<br><br>
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

  • (GT683) Windows installation question!

Hello fellow MSI-owners. I just bought myself an MSI GT683 today, and I have two questions.
    1. It came with Windows 7 pre-installed. But how do I do if I want to do a new/clean installation of windows?
    2. If I want to make a full, new and totally clean windows installation. Is it ok to buy Vista or Windows 7 and simply install it. Or will I encounter any problems with partitions and stuff?

    Quote
I am just reading in another thread that people are having problems with Windows finding the hardware after a clean installation of the GT683.
    What is that about?
That is most probably just people who don't know what they're doing.
Windows 7 is pretty modern, and probably already includes most required drivers. After install is complete, just check Device Manager and see which devices need drivers, which can be downloaded from here:
    http://eu.msi.com/product/nb/GT683.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win7%2064
Note that any devices such as bluetooth, Wi-Fi and webcam will need to be turned on before Windows will detect them.

    TIA for your help.

    Tia,
you can install Forms and Reports Services on the same machine as the Oracle database, but not into the same Oracle Home.
You can also install Oracle Forms and Reports Services on another physical machine and access the database on a remote server.
Forms and Reports Services aleways use the tnsnames.ora file settings to connect to the database. Copy teh database tnsnames entry to <Oracle Forms and Reports Oracle Home>\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
