Lenovo X1 Faulty Trackpad?

Hi everyone.  I was hoping someone might be able to help me out with a problem that I've been seeing on my Lenovo X1.
From time to time, the pad will stop responding properly. The cursor flashes with the busy icon and my cursor goes wild. It lags behind, it puts the cursor further than where I am directing it to go and it makes clicks that I have not made. If I use the knob and the buttons, it works fine (but that knob is very inconvenient).
I have read that it may be related to a faulty power supply unit, but other than waiting for it to happen again so I can test that theory, does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks!
Edit: Title clarification.

Hi DanJones662
Does the problem occur if the power adapter is disconnected? When it is randomly disconnected, does it produce any Windows hardware disconnect sound or does it still exist in Device Manager?
Try this
1. Try to run System Update and install any Critical / Important tab update.
2. Restart your computer, go into BIOS through F1, restore default settings and exit.
If those steps does not do any help, contact Technical Support. The connection between palmrest and the system board could be loosen.
Happy 2012!

  • Faulty trackpad

I have the i5 Macbook Pro which is 6 months old (my first Mac) and until now all has been fine.
But over the last few days my trackpad has started to be unresponsive and jittery as in the cursor moves erratically and not where i want it to go which makes doing anything on my Mac nearly impossible. My software is up-to-date and i have OS X 10.6.8, i have restarted my Mac nuerous times and occasionally it will work for a minute or two and then the cursor will start skipping and jumping as and when it wants too.
I automatically assumed the trackpad has to be faulty, but thought i would seek advice from more experienced Mac users incase there is a reason?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Gaz

I'm having issues with my trackpad too.  I've ordered a battery (showing a caution sign on the menu) since I have tried taking the battery out and rebooting.  With some luck, the trackpad worked for about a day, yet I'm back to the drawing board (no pun) with a faulty trackpad.  Trying to use a usb wireless and wireless mouse until my battery gets here.  Having a terrible time getting them to work (have used a wire, Logitech software and its unifying utility (not sure if either is compatible with Lion)..  I recently installed OS X LION 10.7.2.  Could this also be the problem?  ....waiting on my battery.  I hope this will be the culprit  Any info will be helpful at this stage. Thanks, Sherri

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T420 trackpad and touchpad right/left click stopped working

So I have had a very... VERY... irritating problem with my Thinkpad.
For the first 6 or so months I had the laptop it worked fine. Then, the left click on the touchpad was functioning like the right click (bringing up a menu).
I immediately disabled the touchpad and then used the trackpad right and left clicks which worked perfectly.
After another 4 or 5 months, those buttons stopped working altogether. I could still use the touchpad to move the arrow, but I couldn't click on anything.
I bought an external USB mouse and that worked fine for another 2 months. Then for a few weeks, it would work on and off. I'd have to wiggle it around in the USB ports to get the laptop to recognize it. (it had nothing to do with the ports... there were 3 of them and they all worked fine).
Then it stopped working completely, AND, my laptop refuses to acknowledge ANY USB I plug in.
I have run out of options now. I can't even install anything, download any files from lenovo website. I can't do anything. Does anyone know if it is still salvageable? Has anyone had the same problem?
The lenovo digitizer for tablets.... would that work for this thinkpad? (sorry... not as tech savvy as the rest of you)
    Thanks a bunch,
    Amanda

Here was my solution to this. My left click button on both the trackpad and touch pad suddenly stopped working on me. After putting up with this for a few weeks I decided to investigate. I found if I disabled the touch pad the trackpad left click would start to work again. So I investigated by carefully popping off the left click button for touchpad. Everything looked normal, so I investigated a little father buy removing the small round blueish rubber piece in the middle of the button. Once I did this I realized it quite dirty, with a soft cloth and a toothpick I cleaned both the contacts on the PC and the the black spot on the rubber piece, putting everything back together and my left click worked once again.
The cause of my problem was just a build up of dirt under the rubber contact which caused the button to short out and disable itself.
I didn't have to reinstall any software or drivers.

  • Lenovo G550 faulty graphics...

    Hey guys,
I've got a small problem with my laptop again. The graphics card is starting to fail I think, yesterday, when I first turned it on, there were moving blue squares across the screen, after a BSOD, the laptop restarted and booted into windows fine. The only problem being, the graphics card driver seems to crash quite a lot within windows. Unfortunately, my warranty ran out in January (grrr :@ ) so will this be a pricey repair? This laptop would be great if it was working fine, but over the past year, I haven't had much luck! I have had many overheating problems in the past and have checked the heatsink for dust and dirt deposits but nothing there!
    Cheers

about repairing, do you have valid warranty?
    Hey again,
I got some pictures of the screen before my laptop restarted (sorry for the quality - mobile phone!)
    Link to picture
Thats the windows loading screen, note the blue squares everywhere.
    Link to picture
A close up of the windows 7 home premium bar, note the bar being pink instead of white with squares more visible.
    Link to picture
Another close up, note jagged edges and 'lenovo' logo in partial pink.
I have also noted that even if the laptop has been cool for a past period of time, when the laptop first boots into windows, the fan is at full speed, indicating a heat problem with the card?
I've found the .dmp file but how do I upload it onto the forum?
    Cheers
Edit: No, I no longer have warranty it expired late january this year!

  • Delivered with a faulty trackpad

Hi, My question is whether it is possible to change the trackpad on a 2011 MBP without changing the top casing as well?
The reason I ask is that one of my machines was delivered with a fault and the re-seller claims have to have replaced the track pad three times.  I am beginning to doubt this as the exact same fault keeps recurring.

The reason I ask if the trackpad can be changed without changing to top casing is to gain amunition to pursue them.  Sadly, EU competition law compelled my institute to put the Apple contract out to tender and I am stuck with a reseller called Academia.

  • The cursor freezes when I pinch zoom using the Lenovo Thinkpad T410 trackpad while Firefox is open.

This happens only on Firefox, not other browsers. In Firefox, when the cursor freezes after a pinch zoom, the track point still works.

    Hi jaideepdesai,
Do you have the accessibility type in page option turned on?
    I think it is [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Inline_autocomplete]
I it is definitely one of these: browser. urlbar.
    See [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries About:config entries]

  • NOT disabling keyboard/trackpad on tablet fold...

This is probably the opposite of user problems regarding the keyboard/trackpad and turning the Yoga Pro 2 in tablet mode... Here's the situation:
I'm a Java programmer and I'm sharing my files with my home PC, so I can work from my laptop or desktop easily without transferring files back and forth.
It's no fun adjusting my typing to multiple different keyboards for different PCs, and overall I tend to prefer a trackpad over a mouse for what I do which makes using my lenovo yoga keyboard ideal for everything (majority of wireless keyboards also aren't backlit).
I'm using the program Mouse without Borders (from the Microsoft website) so that I can use my lenovo yoga keyboard/trackpad on my desktop.
What I want to do: keep my keyboard and trackpad enabled when putting the yoga into tablet mode. I've already figured out how to disable the touchscreen for such uses, but the only way I know to keep the keyboard and trackpad active is to uninstall the synaptics driver/software. Obviously that isn't an ideal solution to have to install and uninstall it every time I switch between PCs.
Is there any way to stop synaptics from disabling the keyboard and trackpad when in tablet mode? Preferrably something such as disabling something in device manager, not uninstalling and reinstalling software depending my use for the moment.

    Please provide more information.
First, I have no idea what "Jimi to Jimi" means. This is probably just something you need to explain to me; a Google search didn't turn up anything useful.
You said that the keyboard and trackpad aren't working right. What does this mean, exactly? Regardless, the monitor you use should have no effect on the function of your other peripherals.

  • Macbook Air 2010 trackpad stop working when touching case (palm rest)

My MBA 2010 A1369 had demaged keyboard and trackpad by liquid. I got used whoel top case and replace. (not myself)
Seller claimed it is ok but we face one problem. when I touch case (palm rest) trackpad stops responding. When on one side partly when with both hands then completely. Even when touching case from side. Even when case is comered by paper. So it strange behavior.
Both cases were from A1369 model but on mine was black plastic foil over part of keyboard while on other not. So I am not sure there could be some other differences that could cause this.
Would anybody has any suggestion where could be problem? Wrong contact bad insulation somewhere or faulty trackpad.
    Thanks a lot.
    Frantisek

I reply by myself. Problem was in trackpad. I tried another one and it is ok now. Previous one probably suffer some liquid demage on sides.

  • MacBook Air SMC update 1.8 killed keyboard & trackpad? (on MBA 11,2010,1.6C2D,ML)

    Hi all,
A bit of a pickle. This is briefly what has happened:
    1. Beloved MacBook working fine with Mountain Lion and all updates applied
    2. Notified a single update is available so downloaded and applied "SMC 1.8 update for MacBook Air" using App Store
    3. On restart no response to trackpad or keyboard (apart from power key)
    4. MacBook responds to SMC reset key combination but this doesn't cure the problem, and now the Bluetooth assistant pops up to help me find a keyboard
    5. Other key combinations don't seem to work, and no green light on caps lock key
    6. NVRAM reset using external keyboard, this doesn't solve the problem
    7. With an external keyboard and mouse attached, everything seems to work perfectly, except the built-in keyboard and trackpad
I took it in to my local Apple Store today and their diagnosis software gave everything the green light apart from the internal USB devices. The "genius" advised this is probably due to a faulty trackpad and replacing that would perhaps cure the keyboard as well, especially as it seemed to be partially working at least.
I am out of warranty but I suggested as everything was working perfectly right up to the SMC update then perhaps they might replace my trackpad and possibly top case for free, if there are no signs of water ingress or physical damage when they open it up. They are considering this but I don't hold out much hope! Has anyone else experienced this issue? What would you do in my position?
Thank you for reading this and any responses are greatly appreciated.

In addition, if I try to do a software update I get a similar crash.
Firefox is working as i itunes and MS Office Apps.
What can I do to resolve? Thanks

  • Ever since I installed the Safari 5.1.7 update my trackpad malfunctions.

Ever since I installed the Safari 5.1.7 update, my trackpad does not functing well. I know its not a faulty trackpad because it also malfunctions when I install a different mouse. The malfunction happens when I launch the Safari application. How do I fix this? Is there a way to undo a software update?

Try rebooting into Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. I'm thinking one or more may have become corrupt. Have you done any basic troubleshooting such as removing he MTP's batteries and restarting it or restarting the computer or anything else?
Also PLEASE  use the Profile Update , otherwise we cannot tell anything about your system which makes it extremely difficult to troubleshoot.

  • Faulty Temperature Sensor?

Recently, I was given an old Mac g4 15" Powerbook that the owner no longer wanted. This is the first Mac I have owned as well as the first laptop. It worked fine for me for several weeks, and I got a new battery and upgraded the RAM. Then it started putting itself to sleep seemingly randomly, while I was in the middle of using it. It's fine for a little while upon turning on, and then may start to do this every minute. I changed the battery and memory back to the original pieces, the problem persists. The last time, it would not wake up at all. I finally took out the battery and power cord and held down the power button and restarted it.
Looking around online, I have found other people experienced this 'narcoleptic computer' issue with g4s, but no clear solution. The consensus seems to be a faulty trackpad temperature sensor sends the computer into sleep. I checked my system.log and found emergency overtemp warnings at the times it was sent to sleep. I downloaded Temperature Monitor and found that the trackpad temp would spike way up and down while the other temperatures remained consistent. Sometimes there is no temperature reported for the trackpad at all, at times it behaves normally until the computer is jostled, leading me to believe it might be an issue with something come loose.
Is this something that has been resolved? I saw a couple suggestions to open it up an remove the trackpad temperature sensor entirely, does anyone know if that fixes the problem in the long term? I have also tried resetting the pram and the pmu, setting the power saver preferences to never put it to sleep, trashing my power saver preference files, disabling bluetooth, and running the computer off the power cord only with no battery. Next I will try opening the whole thing up and tightening everything I can see to tighten.
I know it's getting up there in years, but the computer worked fine for what I wanted until this started. I would be very grateful for any advice on how to deal with this issue.

    Hello Kate,
The track-pad heat sensor is +*one of the causes*+ of narcoleptic powerbooks, but from my experience it is more usually related to a faulty keyboard. Sticky or bent keys, dirt, soda, faulty light sensor are more likely the cause. It is highly unlikely anything has become lose inside the machine as all factory fitted screws are sealed with a lock-tight adhesive or equivalent. Try turning off the illuminated keyboard (F8) and see if it persists. Opening the machine is not a bad idea although, you will find very little in the way of visual determiners. Open it up and give it a good clean out. A small soft paint brush and a can of compressed air will do the job. Just be careful to blow the garbage out and not deeper into the machine.
A suggestion to pin-pointing the problem: Can you hook it up to an external display, keyboard and mouse? If so, start the computer, close the lid and wake it with the external mouse. See if the problem persists. If it does, at least you know the track pad sensor is fine and it must be related to the keyboard or a general overheating issue, which may be something as simple as a faulty stick of RAM.

  • Humble Suggestions to Lenovo

1.) I suggest that Lenovo offer 2 choices of keyboard with the W540: one with a numberpad, one without. On a 15-Inch Laptop, this is a hard call; some people will like each, given the aps they use. Personally, I like the feel of the newer Thinkpad keyboards, but it was too much of a transition to expect seasoned Thinkpad customers to adjust both a change in keyboard type AND layout. Some people will not feel comfortable ergonomically using a latop off-center, while others will.
2.) I sugest that Lenovo abandon buttonless trackpads for Windows/Linux based computers. Where has a customer written that they like the buttonless trackpads? The hardware buttons need not be large, but they should be real buttons. A click pad will always take more force to operate than a button-because the tactile switch under it can be made softer because it has to hold less weight. Yes, Macs have a clickpad, but remember that the Mac user interface was designed without a contextual click. If you copy a Mac, people will want a real one--instead!
(On my x220, I have used the click feature less than 10 times, since I have owned it. The upper pointer buttons are easier to use than the than the clickpad.)
3.) If possible, on battery, it would be better to disable cores than throttle down the clock speed. Certain CAD operations such as trimming and certain processes such as meshing can only be done with a single core. Many programs are lightly multi-threaded, so on battery I would rather have a dual or single at 2.7Ghz, than a Quad at 1 Ghz.
4.) Audio is part of what I do with my computers; I want a real audio line-input jack.
5.) There should be an option for a IPS/PLS 1920x1080 screen on the W540. We still don't have perfect GUI graphics scaling. Personally, there is no going back to a TN panel in a portable computer.
6.) Choosing the M2 over Msata was a bad deal for the customer. We just got 1TB Msata SSDs, and now we can't use them?
7.) I think it brings more negative PR to keep changing the docking station with every generation. What IT person wants a whole pile of old docking stations in their cublical?
8.) Not making the new hard drive rails availible to customers will only serve to anger them.
9.) A status-light widget would have eased customers concern over the lack of LED hardware indicators.
10.) It's baffling why the W540 cannot be ordered with a reaonably priced 1TB ssd.
11.) Looking at the W540 page, it's not clear if I could order a W540 with a DVD drive, and a get an drivebay HD case in the box, too.
    Other thoughts....
A 14 inch laptop is the new 15" laptop. A 15 inch laptop is the new 17 inch.(TM)(C) 2014 BrendaEM.
The T440p would have been more popular without a DVD drive, and with a little smaller case. Some people need a GPU, for Adobe aps, ect., but rarely need the drive anymore. If we can't get a Blu-Ray, and don't have to worry about HDCP, then a drive can be USB corded. If I could get a T440p with a K2100, I would get it instead of the 15.
I wish the Yoga was even a bit faster than this 3 year old i5 x220. A 16GB option on the Thinkpad Yoga would have eased my future-proofing fears.
People don't know how to tell you that they don't want PVC covered cords on their personal electonics. They just know they feel better. My computer bag wants a shorter thick cord, and a longer thin one.
A Yoga screened W540 could do almost any graphic task, but it would be a nitch computer.
A battery manager should not take seconds to start.

  • Genius bar/apple support - trackpad problem

This may sound stupid butttt, my trackpad was wonky on one side of my brand new macbook, so I rang up apple and they sent me to the apple store in Eldon Square. However, I went today and the genius then said that he wouldnt be able to fix it and that I would need to ring up apple and get them to pick it up and fix it that way. The problem is is that apple support isnt open for macs now or tomorrow. Does this mean I have to wait until monday with a faulty trackpad until i can arrange a pick up? Thanks in advance.

Serial numbers starting with 5K are white box only. They could be refurbished or new, but are coming from a China plant according to the serial number checker.
I received a 5K white box replacement Friday, and its perfect. So if it was refurbished or new, this factory is doing a good job with them.

  • MacBook Unibody Model A1342 trackpad not working!!

    Hi All,
I have the above mentioned Macbook from Mid 2009. Over the past number of months, the trackpad on the Macbook was behaving erratically. Opening files randomly and bouncing all over the screen. It became absolutely impossible to use, even with a mouse plugged in, it would do the same things.
I recently purchased a new trackpad and following very strict instructions, I replaced the faulty trackpad. However, now the trackpad fails to work at all. All cables and screws have been replaced correctly. One saving grace is that the computer works fine now with a mouse plugged in, but it would be nice to get the trackpad working also.
One thing I did notice when installing the trackpad was that it seemed to click fine without the battery installed. Once I installed the battery back in, it became impossible to press down on the buttons. From reading forums people have been mentioning swollen batteries causing issues with trackpads. However I assembled the Macbook, leaving the battery out and the trackpad still failed to work.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem or what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

  • Edge S430 - Touchpad, Trackpoint & Mouse Buttons Not Functioning Correctly

    Hi.
My new Lenovo S430's Trackpad works most of the time but sometimes just suddenly stops working and I have to restart the laptop using keyboard navigation Often this happens when the machine is under load like an antivirus scan or similar. Sometimes the Trackpad is also sluggish to respond, like it ignores the first touch.
The Trackpoint and mouse buttons (the ones above the Touchpad) work for the first 3-5 minutes after boot up and then suddenly stops working and doesn't start again until it's restarted.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling most of the drivers (for various other issues) on the machine but it hasn't helped.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

    Hi there.
First of all, I'd like to say that Lenovo Customer Care have been extremely difficult to deal with and quite unhelpful; They are no longer returning communications and have seriously damaged any faith I had in Lenovo as a brand and the extended warranty I bought is useless. I cannot recommend their products to friends or collegues as a result.
Now that that is out of the way, what I've gleaned from the hours spent trying to get through to customer care and the minutes talking to them is that the problem is in one of three places:
    1. Microscopic crack in motherboard (highly unlikely, but still it's a hypothesis thrown around by my computer tech friends)
    2. The keyboard and touch pad connectors are improperly seated or faulty
    3. The RAM modules are improperly seated or faulty
As far as I know there is no solution to problem 1 IF it is indeed the cause. I tend to apply the following process to try to cover both possible causes 2 and 3:
    1. Remove keyboard and connectors from laptop
    2. Remove and replace RAM modules
    3. Remove touchpad connector (it looks like a tiny connector like how the two keyboard connectors attach to the motherboard)
    4. Replace all connectors very carefully and ensuring that they are fully installed
    5. Replace keyboard
That SHOULD do it in theory. It's worth pointing out that I haven't had to do this with my laptop since January, but the trust is broken. I used to have to do it at least once a week since I got it and it was a nightmare, especially in the middle of a busy college term.
    I hope that helps.
