Leopard Allows Connection to WAP with Incorrect Password - Self Assigned IP

First of all, I have performed the Keychain Update. I use a Netgear WGR614 WAP.
I strugggled with my Airport Connection over the weekend after upgrading to Leopard, then decided to delete all of my stored wireless networks and start over. When I attempted to connect to my WAP I erred and entered the wrong password; I was not presented with an error message and the Airport was permitted to connect to the WAP, indicating to me that I had established a connection and that an IP address should be assigned. However, the Airport Self Assigned an IP address and of course I had no connectivity. In the absence of any errors, I assumed I was dealing with a more sinister problem, until this morning when I realized that I entered the wrong WEP password.
Many Non-Apple manufacturers recommend that if you are using a MAC that you preface your password with a "$" which has worked in the past (especially with my iPhone), so I corrected the password and included the "$" which forces a Hex password (I think).
In conclusion, I hope this helps others and perhaps some others can test this by entering the wrong WEP password and then we can decide if it needs to be reported as bug; shouldn't the OS should return an error that the password is incorrect and deny a connection or at least present the opportunity to correct the password at least one time before denying a connection ?

thanks for the reply
for me this problem is quite annoying because although I connect to the WPA network at school, after a few minutes, while I remain connected to the network, I lose the external IP of the ISP and I can't use internet anymore... the only way I can use internet again is by turning off the airport and turning it back on.
the weirdest thing about this is that I'm at school now, I brought a cable to go LAN and I have the same problem, after a few minutes, although I remain connected to the network, I lose the external IP address...
any help?

  • Can't reconnect to sync from work - firefox login fails with "Incorrect password" when I know it is correct

I can happily connect my home computers and phone to sync and I have confirmed they sync between themselves. However, my work computer has recently stopped being able to sync where it has previously been fine for well over a year. I am on the latest version of sync and Firefox 35.0.1 (both at home and work).
When I try to reconnect to sync I am directed to the "Sign in to continue" page. It has my correct email address/account name. I enter my password (clicking "Show" to make sure it's correct) but then it always fails with "Incorrect password" in a red banner at the top. I have checked the password is correct and logged out and back in from home using the same password so I know that is correct. I have tried this logged in to work via remote desktop so I could do both at the same time to make sure there isn't just a prevailing sync server problem.
Obviously my work computer is behind a proxy/firewall. I have recently had to add a new certificate as a result of proxy changes to get internet connectivity working. Anecdotally, I think sync stopped working at a similar time - but it's always easy to remember these things differently when you're looking for a solution. So this could be a red herring.
Your help in getting this fixed would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for your reply.
i've deleted all cookies, although I don't really understand how that relates. I have also spoken to our sysadmin who says we don't block access to firefox accounts per se, we do block all file-esque uploads. However, I am not sure this would make any difference to the exact problem I am seeing which is that I can't sign in to my firefox sync account. But maybe signing in to this account is different to a "normal" account - maybe there is more of a two way handshake which relies on sending some encrypted data which appears to our proxy like a file being uploaded out of the company.
I got a slightly different error on my latest clear down and retry, in that the sign in just waited forever (overnight) without success.
    Any further help gratefully received...

  • DON'T Install Snow Leopard on early MacBook Pro with Firmware password on!!

I'm going to summarize my postings from yesterday because I don't want anyone wasting their night like I did.
Many of us who upgraded from Tiger created a Firmware password to ensure that people won't be able to wipe and re-install the HD for sale if the computer gets stolen. I also note that, like me, many have been suffering the recent won't wake from sleep issues that make it feel like the HD is dead. Sometimes it starts from sleep, mostly it's a real hassle to get it to wake up and when it does it's generally in safe sleep mode. I managed to find a "halfway" good fix for that issue by changing the sleep mode from 0 to 3 in the terminal, found a useful script by Googling the problem. Fixes 90% of my issues on that score. But I wanted to install Snow Leopard to "hopefully" fix that issue for good.
HOWEVER, if you have a MacBook Pro 2006-2007 model and the original install disc is still Tiger, WARNING TURN OFF THE FIRMWARE PASSWORD if you created one before you attempt an install. Otherwise you'll be completely stuck in black screen **** and you cannot restart from the Snow Leopard disc once you have it in, neither can you eject it because you never get that far.
The computer, after installing Snow Leopard just gets stuck on the grey screen for a while and then goes black. The computer will not boot from the Snow Leopard disc, Techtool Protege or Leopard disc and the BIGGEST PROBLEM is; you can't Zap the PRAM with firmware active to try and continue installation as some other posters have suggested. Basically, you're screwed.
To get the Snow Leopard disc out I rebooted in Windows and ejected the disc, then put in first the Leopard disc... didn't work... then rebooted, ejected and put in the original installation disc with Tiger, that did work but no firmware password reset!!!
The only solution was for me to wipe the disc, reinstall Tiger from the original install disc, which was the only one that worked. Once I could restart the computer again in Tiger, I was finally able to reboot from the Leopard disc and disable the firmware password.
Then I restarted, zapped the PRAM and using the Leopard disc, restored my machine to its former self with my Time Machine back up. Ran Techtool Pro 5 to fix permissions and rebuild volumes etc. and now have it working again.
I think I'll leave Snow Leopard for a while since I don't know whether the zapping PRAM works during install and frankly, don't have the time to go through this entire debilitating process again. If anyone does manage to get things running on the earlier MacBook Pros please let me know how it went!
Anyway, just thought I'd give people a heads up on the Firmware password thing... it's really a bugger on the older models because it wasn't originally included on the original install disc leaving you with no options!!

Sorry, just wnated to post a comment not question, wasn't sure how to mark it!

  • Will snow leopard allow macbook to work with airport extreme

I have a macbook with intel core duo (as compared to the newer intel core duo 2) and the airport is 802.11g standard, as compared to the newer 802.11n on the newer macbooks. I just bought an apple airport extreme to serve as a router and this macbook barely gets a signal. Called apple support and they said this macbook not set up for the airport extreme and the downloadable 802.11n enabler update won't load on this machine, which is currently 10.4.11. Anyway, they assured me that if I bought the snow leopard box set and installed it on this macbook it would solve the problem. Will it??

I'm guessing the airport in the computer is malfunctioning.
Not necessarily. Wireless network problems are very tricky to troubleshoot, as they could be caused by all kinds of things. A fridge between you and the router. A neighbor with a router broadcasting on the same channel. A cordless phone. In one very old school building I worked at a couple years ago, any wall or ceiling would drop the signal strength significantly.
The most likely outside source, with such a rapid drop-off, would be a neighbor using a wireless router on the same channel that is interfering with your signal. Try downloading a copy of iStumbler, which will show you all the nearby networks and channels they use.
It is really frustrating that apple support convinced me to buy the snow leopard to solve the problem.
Have you installed SL already and found that it didn't fix the problem? I said that SL will not give you 'n' speeds, but sounds like that's not what you talked to Apple Support about. My experience with SL compared to Leopard on the same computer was that SL found the wireless network faster and never dropped the connection. (Under Leopard, I was having problems with losing the signal sometimes when my wife opened up her Vista laptop in the same room.) So I would advise trying it, just to see if it solves the problem. However, you'll need to be open to the possibility that it won't.

  • CAn't connect to Internet Through Time Capsule-Self Assigned IP Adress

My iBook battery died. After connecting to power source, I can't connect to the internet. I get a message that the iBook is self assigning the IP address. How do I correct this? I've removed the battery & done several restarts with no success.

Here's 10.4 directions, not to different from 10.5, see if it helps...
    Go to System Preferences
    Click Network
    Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
    Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.

  • Unable to connect to wifi in some hotels (self-assigned IP address)

I normally have no problem connecting to wifi, but in some hotels I am unable to connect and get a self-assigned IP address 169...
Having looked around the forums, in my current hotel I have tried several fixes without success (many of these probably apply to a permanent rather than intermittant problem):
    - I renewed the DHCP lease
    - I tried a manual IP address
    - I created a new network location
    - I deleted com.apple.airport.preferences
    - I turned off the firewall
    - I repaired disk permissions
Has anyone else found a fix to problems with some hotel wifi systems?
I can connect with my iPhone, but not my MacBook, so I am now in an internet cafe (and I don't think that you can "tether" an iPhone connected by wifi to a MacBook?).

I have finally found a solution!
I copied the IP address that the hotel had assigned to my iPhone (in the 192.168.0.xx series) into the TCP settings for the hotel network on my Mac, and then managed to get a connection (but only by using "DHCP with manual address", rather than "Manually").
But this seems to have killed the wifi connection on my iPhone: whatever I do I now get a self-assigned IP address 169... on the iPhone (there is no "DHCP with manual address" setting), so as I am in Paris I hope the Mac connection continues to work!
The general solution seems to be to use a static IP address, but in the "DHCP with manual address", which I had not tried before.

  • Iphone 3G and wifi problems.  I've been reading the string about this from last year.  I have an iphone 3G with the latest ios 4.2.1 software.  Every time I connect to my home wifi - Belkin N  - it comes up after a few minutes with "Incorrect Password".

I re-enter the password correctly but it keeps happening.  Any suggestions?

I have a belkin n surf as well and i have got this and other problems. my iphone 3g and 4 often keep on loosing connectivity. especially if the bluetooth is one (either connected or not). it often fails to find my wifi network after waking up from sleep.
the problem i think is most certainly with belkin n. its one of the worst routers out there. unfortunately i didn't read the reviews before buying it. i have other problems with it to like connecting it to a dc++ hub. the setting up for port forwarding is a pain and it tends to connect to the internet on its own even though there are no settings to disable automatic connection.
i was later told by many people online and also read it in the reviews that its one of the very bad router out there along with other belkin routers. belkin has even arranged a replacement for me as its under warranty but i'm avoidng travelling to the other end of the city cause i know all models have the same problem. the worst of them all is a mere 3mbps transfer speed form one computer to another over wifi file sharing even if they both are connected via 802.11n and are placed withing full signal coverage range, with no firewall or security on either on the machines or router. tried it over several macbooks and windows pcs.
    i'm getting lynksys for good.

  • IPhone can connect to Exchange Server with incorrect password!

I have changed my Active Directory password, but have not entered the new password into the Exchange account settings on my iPhone. Nevertheless, my iPhone can still connect and get mail from Exchange. Thinking that perhaps it was because the iPhone was still working with a connection that had been established before I changed my password, I turned it off and turned it back on again -- and it connected and got new mail!

Don't blame the phone just yet.
The server is where the problem is..... The Exchange Server/IIS front end is the gatekeeper to your email. If the password is sent wrong, the server will reject you. Conversely, if your Exchange server is not authenticating at all, it will let anyone in.
What is probably happening is that your password has not synchronized from AD to Exchange. This is not unheard of, but if it persists you should let your Sys Admin know.
My guess is that you can log into your OWA (Web mail) with your old password as well.

  • Does firefox offer a password option to only allow it to open with a password? I want my children to get on internet only with my permission.

I would like to set Firefox up so that I can enter a password to allow my children internet access. I don't want them to be able to get on without me knowing about it. Is this possible?
    Thank you,
    Katie

[[Block and unblock websites with parental controls]] might help. You can most likely find an extension that allows something like this. [https://addons.mozilla.org/ https://addons.mozilla.org/]. You may also want a content filter such as SafeEyes, Netnanny, etc.

  • Can't connect to Time Capsule (Incorrect password) on high traffic

I always was able to connect just fine to the wifi network that my time capsule is broadcasting.
I Recently got a TV provider which goes through the Ethernet. When the TV decoder is connected to the time capsule and is powered on....I can't connect to the wifi. it always says that I have the wrong password, even though it's correct.
As soon as I power off the tv decoder I can connect just fine.
SO for some reason the time capsule has issues connecting to it's wifi when a lot of data is going through one of the Ethernet ports.
Any ideas how to fix that?
RIght now I have an additional cable that goes straight into the TV decoder, bypassing the time capsule....but I would rather have a spare socket to use with my macbook when needed.

We need all the details of the network..
What is the modem? Is it a router? Make and model might help..
What mode is the TC working in? ie Is it a bridged or router?
What model is the TC? A1xxx from the base please.
I Recently got a TV provider which goes through the Ethernet.
So this simply plugs into your TC LAN port??
When the TV decoder is connected to the time capsule and is powered on....I can't connect to the wifi. it always says that I have the wrong password, even though it's correct.
What make and model is the decoder? Is it wifi?
How much bandwidth does it require? What is the bandwidth of your internet?
If you want to start messing around before you answer all the questions.
Can you please reset the TC to factory.
Redo the setup but this time use all correct SMB network naming.. That simply means Short names.. eg TCgenx (use actual number for x).
TCwifi for wireless name.. do not use apple names.. they are wrong for SMB network.
Use no password on the wireless as a test.. start the TV decoder.. and test wireless.. does wireless now work. If so test with WPA2 Personal security and a pure alphanumeric password 8-20 characters mix of case and numbers. Does the wireless now fail?? If so there is something conflicting with it. Or the decoder is affecting wireless.
Set a different name for the two bands.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz and set the channels.. try clients on the two different bands.. is it still affected??

  • Ipad air 2 8.1.2 not connecting to wi-fi; incorrect password

Bought this iPad on thanksgiving 2014. Worked great until today when it would not stay connected to my home wi-fi. Kept disconnecting every minute. Upon researching this online, I reset my Network Settings and now it won't connect to the network at all saying the password is incorrect. Of course it is the right password because every other device in the house is connected and online just fine. Any ideas Apple fans?

It is the latest iPad Air 2 64GB wifi only model from 2014.

  • Remving EDGE and connecting to WIFI with a password

After I downloaded an update on my first generation IPhone, I have only been able to access the WIFI that doesn't need a password but not password protected ones. I used to be able to access any WIFI as long as I had the password. I also notice that I get E (Edge) on the screen now and I didn't use to get that. I tried removing EDGE but on network settings I don't see an area for cellular data or APN as suggested on several support forums. Please help.

Well first off, welcome to the Mac family!
Let's start with your AEBSn. To determine both the Radio Mode and Wireless Security settings, you will need to use the AirPort Utility. You will find this utility in the /Applications/Utilities folder in the Finder (the Finder is similar to Windows Explorer).
Double-click on the AirPort Utility to run it, and once it is open, select your AEBSn, and then, select Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab
Here's a screenshot and I have pointed out the two settings. Please let me know what yours are set for.

  • My 5s talks to me but will not allow me to unlock with my password. What do I need to do to open my phone?

My iPhone 5s will let me open with my pass code. It tells me each button I touch but will not open phone. Help.

    Hi artn7,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If the screen on your iPhone is dark but the phone otherwise seems to be responding (sounds, etc), a pair of Accessibility features known as Screen Curtain and VoiceOver may have inadvertently been activated. You may find the following section of the iOS 7 for iPhone manual helpful (Apendix A - Accessibility, in the Voiceover section on pg 126):
Turn the screen curtain on or off. Triple-tap with three fingers. When the screen curtain is on, the screen contents are active even though the display is turned off.

  • Finance Postings with incorrect cost elements assigned

    Hello,
I am implementing the SAP Plant Maintenance Module (PM) at my Company and Iu2019m running into issues with the finance team regarding the finance (FI) postings during the material goods issue (GI) to the order (MIGO) and financial settlement (KO88) of all order costs.
When a material is issued to the order via MIGO a material document is created with two financial GL postings; credit the inventory account and debit the material expense account. The posting made to the parts expense account contains a reference to a profit center and the PM Order. However my FI Group is saying the posting to the parts expense account must be accompanied by a Cost Center. My understanding of this is that the PM Order itself is an interim cost collector which is why itu2019s referenced in the posting and not a cost center. Knowing that once the settlement run is executed for the PM Order the costs collected in the order will be settled to the appropriate cost elements. Once settlement occurs the FI postings are generated for the materials and the costs are moved to the cost center of the equipment/PM Order. The two material postings generated are; credit to the material expense account (offsets the G.I. posting above) and a debit to the expense account along with the cost center of the equipment. The debit posting to the expense account is the posting that carries the cost center assignment and the one which I believe my finance team is looking however as I said above they expect the cost center assignment in all postings to the parts expense account.
Can anyone tell me what the SAP Standard approach is for CO postings during a Goods Issue to a PM Order and the CO postings for materials during settlement? Is it possible to post to a cost center and PM Order at the same and for what business reason would this be done?
    Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi,
Spare parts or components are the company assets. So while issuing those components for consumption, asset account for materials would get value reduced & expense account for the material would get value added. Here no picture for Cost Center.
Only while doing the settlement, cost center will come into picture by getting the value from order to the Cost center.
    Regards,
    Maheswaran.
