Leopard Fire Wall

There's been a lot of discussion in user forums about the lack of protection offered by Leopard's firewall. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=378801
I'm using Tiger on a 2.2 SR MacBook Pro. I've had no problems configuring the firewall and no vulnerabilities that I can detect. After reading the latest criticisms of Leopard's firewall, I'm thinking that it's not wise to upgrade until Apple addresses this flaw. Do I need to be concerned?

If you care about your firewall and previously had customized rules in tiger using the GUI, then yes.
Opening arbitrary ports (e.g, 8888) seems to be completely undocumented and perhaps unsupported?
Also, the firewall controls are absolutely miserable in Leopard, besides being misleading as well.

  • Fire wall not on

Hello,      in poking around in the security section of my computer I saw that the fire wall is not on.  Should it be on?   I have an older Imac 10.6.8.  How do I find out if I have trojans or other things?
    Thank you,
    Susan

A firewall does not have to be used. Even if it were enabled it would not prevent malware. Firewalls are used to prevent someone from hacking into your computer.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Fire Wall Tab

    Hi,
Im having trouble with fire wall in leopard
when im trying to install an update for a program and it says my computer is behind a firewall. Ive read that i need to go to system preferences>sharing>Firewall tab. Well i cant find the fire wall tab, it just shows a list of services but nothing about firewalls.

Alas, Apple changed how the firewall works in Leopard.
What you need to do now is go to the Firewall tab of the Security preference pane.
If your firewall is set to "Allow all incoming connections," your firewall is disabled so you need not do anything.
If your firewall is set to "Block all incoming connections," no applications should be able to accept incoming connections.
If your firewall is set to "Set access for specific services and applications" you'll have to click the "+" button, navigate to your application, and let the firewall know whether it should be allowed to accept incoming connections.

  • Windows vista system, continuously trying to download a DRM file in Adobe Digital Editions application shows "Error check activation". I have authorized the Fire Wall and still the same.

windows vista system, continuously trying to download a DRM file in Adobe Digital Editions application shows "Error check activation". I have authorized the Fire Wall and still the same.

Since Re-activation as suggested by the link above is not working for you, Can you please confirm the following:
The OperatorURL is reachable. ( you can find the operatorURL from the acsm file by opening it in notepad, etc)
And Book is still available on the book-store for purchase.
(If any of first two are not available, you might have to talk to distributor for next action item to get the book. Since you will have record of purchasing the book, (in my opinion) they should provide you the new token for downloading the book)
And please confirm this that you used the same userID for downloading that you used when you first fulfilled/downloaded the book.
(If it is the case, then you have to use the correct userID)
    I hope it helps.

hi my itunes crashes everytime i try to excess the itunes store,it seems to work fine until that point, ive uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and also tried it with my fire wall off but all to no avail. i  am using a new computer which isnt authorized yet if that makes any difference. any help would be greatly appreciated

Windows 8 or Windows RT? iTunes won't run on Windows RT. It should run on Windows 8. Use the appropriate installer from an account with administrator privileges.
    Windows System Requirements
PC with a 1GHz Intel or AMD processor and 512MB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 require the iTunes 64-bit installer
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store

  • Fire walls between servers..

    Hi All,
    1. Is there any way to find firewalls (i.e. number of firewalls and their name or any other identification) between two servers.
    2. How to find ports whether the are opened in the fire wall. Telnet is disabled for our servers. Is there any way to find this.
    Thanks in advance,
    DJ.

telnet: connect to address 10.4.149.241: Connection refused
Can I conclude the port is not opened from the above result ?Possible conclusions:
    1. There is no service running on pser2j.bts.org at 55000 port number
    2. FW1 returns connection refused (blocking connection)
    2. FW2 returns connection refused (blocking connection)
Is there any way to find which firewall is creating the problem?Of course there is.
    1. Clean, quick and best: ask the FW administrator whether connection is allowed (also FW administrator could check FW logs for all information about connection)
    2. Only for users with good understanding of TCP/IP: you could compare TTL of SYN packet with TTL of RST packet (firewall decrements TTL)
Note this method is not alwas usefull and in such case you need use other methods.

Is the router's hardware firewall equally effective if one is connected wirelessly (as opposed to via an Ethernet cable)?
    IMHO, yes.
also, if your network is protected as mentioned above, it would take a very determined hacker with lots of time to hack into it.
additionally, make sure you password protect your base station(s).

It only run when the server and the client are in the same LAN,But
when installing the server side on a machine behind a fire wall it gives me this exception
    Connection refused: connect.
So is there a special technique when dealing with server behind firewalls?
if exis what should i use????
    Thanks for your time

yes and some of the techniques are
    HTTP tunnelling
    Direct forwarding over http

    rmi-cgi scripts etc

  • Firefox won/t upgrade i have added firefox to communicate through windows fire wall home page icon shifed to rigt hand side but that is all

have tried several times to upgrade firefox.i have added to
communicate through windows fire wall.the onlt thing that changea is home icon shifted to upper rigt hand corner.i have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling firedfox upfgade no luck

You have Firefox 4.0.1 which is the latest release version. Which version are you trying to upgrade to? Unless you are on the beta channel, that is as far as Firefox will upgrade. To "upgrade" to Beta, Aurora, or Nightly, you have to do it manually via a download and installation.

My Mac is relatively new and I am wondering if there is anti virus & fire wall installed from apple?

Regarding anti-virus software, see my Mac Malware Guide. You'll find that, for most people, the built-in defenses are more than adequate.
As for a firewall, note that the average user does not need to have a firewall enabled on their computer. See The myth of the dirty Mac.

  • The Adobe Updater fails everytime due to our corporate fire wall.

The Adobe Updater fails every time due to our corporate fire wall. Is there a work around? It completes about 80% then can't see the internet. I suspect it is trying to talk to an FTP site which are blocked by our firewall.
    Is there a work-around?

I am using Windows 7.  I went to the "Installers" folder & there is a log file for every update except the Camera Raw update. I don't think it gets far enough to create the file. I was watching the folder & I tried to install this last patch again. I starts out saying it's downloading then aborts. No file is created. The files that are in the folder are:
    Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5 11.5.2 08-27-2012.log.gz
    Adobe Extension Manager CS5.5 5.5.1 08-27-2012.log.gz
    Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 4.5.1 08-27-2012.log.gz
    Adobe Flash Pro CS5.5 11.5.1 08-27-2012.log.gz
    Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5 X64 5.5.1 08-27-2012.log.gz
AIR for Apple iOS support (FB) 2.6.1 08-27-2012.log.gz
    Creative Suite 5.5 Web Premium 5.5 06-19-2012.log.gz
Ordinarily I would just ignore this failure but I actually use Camera Raw for my Nikon D90 and Nikon D7000.

i'm wondering how do i set up a fire wall for mac. is there a program or somthing?

OS X already includes a software firewall. Enable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
If you are using your own wireless network you are already beyond a hardware firewall, so it is unnecessary and redundant to enable it. Its use is justified if you intend to connect to a public network, or are otherwise using a LAN along with others who may not be trusted.
