Leopard Server Admin Fails "there is no server available"

My Leopard Server has been running fine for months, uprgraded to 10.5.6 without difficulty a few weeks ago. Today, the Server Admin application is throwing up an error "there is no server available at the address you entered", with a box to delete it or save it.
Huh?
The server seems to be still running fine - mail continues to be delivered.
I note that this error has been reported before here and elsewhere, but there doesn't seem to be any comprehensive solution.
I would appreciate any help.

Hi
For the lack of any further information it's difficult to say? It could be anything or nothing at all? Have you tried a restart? Sometimes you'll see this error message if there's a problem with your keychains? You're more likely to see it if there is a problem with your DNS Service. Although not definitive does Workgroup Manager have a problem? Can you connect to the Server using Server Admin remotely?
You should be able to remove the server from the list and re-add it. You can use its .local name, its loopback address, its IP address or its FQDN. Whichever one its having a problem with use one of the other methods instead. Any or all of them should work.
To remove keychains you could use Keychain Access. Keychain Access > Edit > Keychain List. Select the ones you want and click the 'minus' symbol. I tend to not bother and remove them from /User/Home/Library/Keychains as well as /Library/Keychains followed by a restart. You can also 'reset' how Server Admin presents its interface on launch by removing its .plist from /Users/Home/Library/Preferences. Quit out if it first. Take the com.apple.ServerAdmin.plist to the trash, empty it and re-launch Server Admin. You might have to restart the server. There's a similar .plist for Workgroup Manager.
If you can't connect at all then you are probably looking at a problem with DNS Services. Can the server resolve itself to itself? Issuing host or nslookup for its fully qualified domain name followed by its IP Address should present a clearer picture. You could also issue:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
As this checks the validity of the Server's DNS. If it returns "DNS hostname is unavailable, please run the repair tool" then consult changeip's manual page. If it returns "the names match, there is nothing to change" then start looking at the physical structure of the network itself. An intermittent fault with the patch cable perhaps or Switch port?

  • Server admin fails to start tomcat only

    Hi,
we just upgraded our server from 10.3 to 10.4. after the upgrade - the server admin tools fail to start tomcat only. sooooo when i start tomcat only service - the app says its running. but i can't connect to port 80 to show me the default page or any of my webapps.
    whats werid is that:
    it tries to startup JBoss
    instead of Tomcat.
When I run the settings command I see:
    # serveradmin settings appserver
    appserver:jbossConsoleURL = "https://tels-berkeley.local:40000"
    appserver:configurationType = "run_TOMCAT_not_JBOSS"
    appserver:netbootIsBroken = "YES"
    appserver:allConfigurations:arrayindex:0 = "default"
    appserver:allConfigurations:arrayindex:1 = "deploy-cluster"
    appserver:allConfigurations:arrayindex:2 = "deploy-standalone"
    appserver:allConfigurations:arrayindex:3 = "develop"
    appserver:configurationName = "deploy-standalone"
    appserver:netbootClientURL = ""
This looks like it is should use tomcat but it doesn't. After running
    serveradmin start appserver
    I ran:
    ps auxww | grep java
    Which gave me:
    appserve 1087 96.0 4.5 359912 58384 ?? R 11:24AM
    0:12.58 /usr/bin/java -server -Xmx100M
    -Djboss.server.temp.dir=/var/tmp/jbosstmpdata1083
    -classpath /Library/JBoss/3.2/bin/run.jar org.jboss.Main -c
    deploy-standalone
however, if i stop the services and start tomcat manaully with ./startup.sh it works fine.
the logs say nothing. does anyone have a clue whats going on? where i can investigate.
    thnks
    Anthony

I've been doing a little investigating, and I think I'm seeing the cause of the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
When I do a "tail /var/log/servermgrd/servermgrderrorlog" on the server, I don't get normal error log lines. Instead, I get the text that you see when you type "serveradmin", namely:
    ============================================
    Usage: serveradmin [-dhvx] [list | start | stop | status | fullstatus | settings | command] [<service_key> [ = <value> ]]
    -h, --help display this message
    -v, --version display version info
    -d, --debug print command
-x, --xml print output as XML plist
    Examples:
    serveradmin list
    --Lists all services
    serveradmin start afp
    --Starts afp server
    serveradmin stop ftp
    --Stops ftp server
    serveradmin status web
--Returns current status of the web server
    serveradmin fullstatus web
--Returns more complete status of the web server
    serveradmin settings afp
    --Returns all afp configuration parameters
    serveradmin settings afp:guestAccess
    --Returns afp guestAccess attribute
    serveradmin settings afp:guestAccess = yes
    --Sets afp guestAccess to true
    serveradmin settings
--Takes settings commands like above from stdin
    serveradmin command afp:command = getConnectedUsers
--Used to perform service specific commands
    serveradmin command
--Takes stdin to define generic command that requires other parameters
    ============================================
This shows up repeatedly in the error log, as if it were trying to use serveradmin to perform tasks, but is instead just getting the standard help message back...
Anyone have clue as to why this would be the case?

  • Server Admin runs very slow on Server 10.6.2

After what only could be called a power disaster that brought our XServe down hard, when I run Server Admin on the XServe, it's dog slow...it works, but it takes forever to do anything. However, Server Tools installed on my Macbook runs it just as fast as ever. Does anyone have any suggestions besides reinstalling? As our server is still in the set up stages, a backup of it hadn't been made yet...
    Thoughts anyone?

The usual triggers for this (mis)behavior are a bad local DNS configuration within whatever is serving your local DNS, and potentially a firewall issue within the client.
If you've not messed around with your client firewall settings since this last worked, I'll bet on scrozzled DNS.
Verify your forward and reverse DNS translations and the correctness of your local DNS server set-up using the dig tool.

As for auxiliary power, APC SMART-UPS 1500 series is a reasonable option for a less-interruptable power supply (LIPS) for an Xserve box and its usual array of companion direct-attached accouterments. And the USB connection from this model is recognized and honored by Mac OS X Server without add-on software; the box will shut down. (I'd look at adding LIPS capacity if you have a FC SAN and Xserve RAID or such, though.)

  • No Server Admin after Power Failure on Server

Hello! I need help. I'm a newbie Xserver admin and I have no idea why the server admin and server monitor tools can't see my Xserver. I've read the documentation but come up blank. Can anyone help me???

    tnation,
Can you ssh into it? It is possible ADRAgent (client daemon) didn't start up or is bound up. If you can get into the box via ssh you can run 'top' a determine what's going on.
(Give yourself alot screen space in terminal.)
    $ssh -l [adminusername] [serverIP]
    password:[password]
    Welcome to Darwin
    $top
[listing of running processes here. Cntl-c to stop 'top'.]
If the process ARDAgent is taking up system resources it may be bound up - kill it and it should restart automatically and then you should be able to connect.
    $kill [job#fromtop]

  • Server Admin does not manage mini server

Running 10.7.3 server on two MacMini's on the same LAN. Both running their apps smoothly. Unique IP's managed via router's DHCP service, along with other networked devices. No IP address conflicts visible; good router. No other LAN problems and other NAS's on the net are behaving. Both mini's are accounted for within the router's DHCP table.
When Server Admin 10.7.3 is launched, both mini's appear in the left window of 10.7.3 server admin under 'servers', however, only one makes itself available for administration; the other has a tilde in a circle icon next to its name and will not come ready when clicked. Both servers are completely manageable using ARD; both desktops mount remotely and are accessible. Ditto when using Apple's stand-alone ScreenSharing app.
Question: why is one server not manageable by the 10.7.3 server admin app, and the other is? I've installed and checked all system versions and network settings on both mini's and they're the same. One mini is a generation behind the other, but both are late models.

  • Server Admin slow to connect to server

Server Admin 10.6.8 client seems slow to connect to new Xserve 10.6.8 installation. Client connects via gigabit ethernet from a Mac 2gig workstation. Our Tiger file server is almost instant to connect using both Server Admin and WGM. All software is current. Server is identified by corp DNS services. Hostname is verified. ARD 3.51 is quick to connect from same client workstation. Could it be just due to Kerberized authentication? Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

    Probably DNS services.
To verify local DNS, launch Terminal.app and issue the following command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter your administrative password for the sudo command.
That command will output information indicating your DNS is correct or not, and that changes are required or not.
If DNS changes are required, then you'll need to review your DNS services settings for validity, or (if you don't have DNS services operational on your LAN) here is a description of setting up the local DNS server.
You cannot use your ISP DNS on your LAN, if you're configured behind a firewall and using NAT at the firewall.

  • Email server problem - failed to connect to server

Since Friday 27th August I've been having trouble connecting to the email server for my BT Yahoo account. It simply can't find the server, even though none of the account settings have changed and it has worked fine for years. Weirdly, sometimes it works and emails come through (so the settings are obviously fine) but then it will stop working for no apparent reason. I use Thunderbird as my email client, but I tested the account in Outlook Express and it gives the same error. The account works fine over webmail, and through my iPhone, however.
It seems like this is a DNS error rather than software related - is there anything BT-related that could be causing this, or any simple fixes? I've tried rebooting the HomeHub but that doesn't seem to have made a difference. I work from home, so this is a really annoying problem.

    Lynx wrote:
Interesting - we have exactly the same problem. Haven't been able to download for days. This has happened with two different computers with different anti-virus systems - so one assumes it's not suddenly that. I can access my e-mail online and reply (having to bcc myself, so when it does eventually work I have copies on my outlook express. It was working perfectly one night and the next morning just stopped - nothing happened in between.
I have tried to find out what the error number means, but no-one - not even BT's Help section - seem to have the solution. Have you ever seen the Eddie Izzard sketch on YouTube? This is definately one of those moments!
If you find a solution - would really appreciate you posting it on here, so I can fix mine. Will do the same for youi.
    Hi.
This sort of problem is hard to determine. It could be a few things, including a corruption of the mail account (which can last for a short time or a number of days), it could be a local problem - which you've ruled out by the different computer check, or perhaps a "stuck" email - say one which is spam/virus attached and the online checking systems failing to pass through it, or possibly a stale IP address.
The latter 2 are easy to check, the first via webmail and see if there is anything near the "top" of the list that may cause a problem, moving to a new folder, and try again. The last can be tried by power cycling the router to get a new IP address. Disconnect the broadband and router for say 15 minutes and then reconnect to try again.
If there was a major server problem, there would be lots more complaints.

  • Server Migration failed to migrate web server virtual hosts

I just migrated from an my Mac OS X Server 10.4 to a brand new 10.6 machine. It seems to have copied all my files but failed to bring across the extensive list of virtual hosts I was serving. Entering them in one by one is going to take a while, so does anyone know how to pull them across? I have the old server attached in target mode, but not sure where apache keeps the configuration file for that.

After some more digging, it appeared that migration assistant just completely failed to set up the Open Directory on the new server. Fortunately, I managed to get the old drive cloned to an ATA drive, which I used to boot an ancient G4 tower, from whence I was able to do an Open Directory export and import into the new server.
I seem to be having the same inability to Kerberize the Open Directory that a lot of other people seem to have, but I don't actually need that feature, so it's not a big deal.

  • Server Admin Problem - File Sharing fails to load

We recently switched over from a 10.4 server to an Intel Quad Core Xserve running 10.5.8. Things seemed to be working for about a week but now The File Sharing part of Server Admin fails to load. After spinning for a few minutes I get a kNetworkError on the File Sharing Service.
I'm not totally through setting up all the share points so this is causing quite a problem. Otherwise the Sharepoints that are set up are working properly. The first time this happened a server restart cleared the problem. This time nothing seems to help.
Anyone have a cure for this?

The problem seems to be getting worse. Once the error occurs some of the other services are not available through SA either. Anybody have any suggestions, or is it a reformat and reinstall situation?

  • Print Queue Management via Server Admin not working

We have Xserves (10.5.8) running the Print Service for queue management to our printers. Clients print through the server just fine.
When the printer jams or is otherwise paused, print jobs pile up in the queue as expected. The queue can be seen and managed by logging into the server, going to Server Preferences/Print & Fax and selecting the print queue.
However, when the queue for the paused printer is viewed within Server Admin/Print, the queue shows as empty and therefore can't be managed. We want to use Server Admin for this function because:
    1) Server Admin can be run remotely on a workstation, so no login to the server required.
    2) We can assign Print Service management rights to select non-admins so they can manage the queues.
Any ideas on why Server Admin fails to show spooled jobs? Is it working for anyone else?
I am using Server Admin version 10.5.3 which are the latest available that comes with Server Admin Tools 10.5.7. We had been running 10.5.7 on the Xserve and it didn't work then either.

Here's a bit more information about our setup and our experiences with Apple's CUPS implementation:
On the server, all printer queues are set up with only lpr and ipp sharing enabled with the PPD setting for each printer set to Generic Postscript. We found that setting the PPD to the printer specific one on the server caused problems when clients tried to use printer specific options, like paper tray selection, etc.. The selection would be undone, apparently because the driver on the server would override the previous settings. Using Generic Postscript allows the client PPD settings to go through unmodified. Our printers are general a mix of HP LaserJets and some Sharp Copiers.
All clients use lpd to the server queues with the printers' actual PPDs configured. Using ipp is superior in that printer feedback (jams, out of toner, etc) makes it back to the clients, but ipp only works when the client, the server, and the printer are on the same network. If the ipp client is not on the same network, the client spooler immediately goes into a paused state and the print job is stuck on the client.
Using lpd to the server queues works reliably, but there is no feedback to the client. Jobs disappear from the client queue and go to the server, appearing to the user as a successful print. If the printer is down, there's nothing they can see or do about it.

Can anyone help us to fix this issue?

    Hi,
Apparently, there is a problem in package “*wwsso_ls_private*”. I got below error while trying to compile this package. When I was trying to compile ORASSO.WWSSO_LS_PRIVATE, I got the below errors about parameters
    SQL> alter package ORASSO.WWSSO_LS_PRIVATE compile body;
Warning: Package Body altered with compilation errors.
    SQL> show error
    Errors for PACKAGE BODY ORASSO.WWSSO_LS_PRIVATE:
    LINE/COL ERROR
    484/4 PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
    484/16 PL/SQL: ORA-00947: not enough values
    628/6 PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
    628/20 PL/SQL: ORA-00904: "LSCI": invalid identifier
    681/4 PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
    684/10 PL/SQL: ORA-00904: "LSCONFIG": invalid identifier
    Cause:
The possible cause this issue is some problem that occured when
applying the latest patchset. The patchset does include updates of ODS and ORASSO schemas and their objects. If parts of objects were not updated with the new version and the old version is still in DB, errors may occur (for example when I was trying to compile ORASSO.WWSSO_LS_PRIVATE I got the errors
about parameters, which indicate version mismatch).
To fix this problem, I have re defined the problem giving package.
This package wwsso_ls_private is defined in
    $ORACLE_HOME/sso/admin/plsql/sso/ssolsprv.pks
    Solution:
I have fixed the problem by following the below steps.
    1. Login sqlplus as orasso user of MR
    2. Recreate the view wwsso_ls_configuration_info$ by issuing the below DDL statement.
    SQL> CREATE OR replace VIEW wwsso_ls_configuration_info$ OF ls_config_type WITH object oid(config_name) as select * from wwsso_ls_configuration_info_t;
    3. Now compile the problem giving package.
    SQL> alter package wwsso_ls_private compile body;
Compilation of this package was done without any error.
    4. Now all the OC4J container including OC4J_SECURITY in our Infra tier are up and running.
    -Thanks,

  • Server admin lost control after upgrade to 10.4.10

After I upgraded my server 10.4.8 to 10.4.10 i have lost the control from Server Admin. When I try to connect to the server it says "There is no server available at the address you entered." I have tried to connect using the 127.0.0.1 address, the local servername "myserver.local" and ofcause the local LAN IP 192.168.1.1 and the WAN address 212.131.2.1. The server has before upgrading to 10.4.10 been running for a long time without any problems with Server Admin.
In the syslog this message appears:
    Sep 6 15:58:38 ns3 /Applications/Server/Server Admin.app/Contents/MacOS/Server Admin: [368] ServerManager session failed in connect(ns3.myserver.net,212.131.2.1,687): 61\n
    Any help with this problem?
    jesper

It didn't work for me. I ran a security update this weekend, and then the problems started Monday when I restarted. It seems like the update renamed my server. The only place I know how to rename stuff is in the "sharing" section of "system preferences." But now with the update (and I don't really know if it was like this before) I can't use periods in the name (it changes them to hyphens). Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Server admin overwriting virtual host conf file

For some reason the website crashed this morning. The error log pointed to the virtual_host conf file. It crashes each time the we attempt to create an alias and then save changes.
The only way to fix it is to go back and edit the conf file and then web service starts on its own.
When I look at the file, it says: This file is auto generated by the Server Admin Web backend plugin whenever server settings are saved.
Is there a way to configure this so the file does not change?
    Thanks!

The best way to do this is to take the contents of /Library/Collaboration and put it in a location accessible from your newly set up Lion install.  In Server.app, enable Wiki, and run:
         sudo wikiadmin migrate -r /Path/To/Library/Collaboration
After that, start the wiki and you should be good to go.  You should bind your Lion server to the same Directory as the Snow Leopard server, to ensure permissions and users carry across successfully.

  • Server Admin refuses to connect, servermgrd runs but no ports are open

Server Admin refuses to connect to server when run locally or remotely. Upon investigating, servermgrd seems to run but when I run network utilities and port scan the server, neither port 311 or 687 are open. All other services appear to be running fine. No firewall is running. Server Monitor also has the same problems but WorkGroup Manager seems to work fine.
About 3 weeks ago, I had the problem and after trying many things, I did a clean install but the problem has reappeared after a few days/weeks.
At some point, servermgrd was crashing with a message about NSURL.... (lost and forgot the exact message).
-Tried to remove all the files in /private/var/servermgrd/
This solved the crashes but it now runs without opening the ports. After starting, it doesn't run away and consume any CPU.
Could not locate in system.log, console.log and servermgr.log any error messages indicatind something is wrong with servermgrd.
The log does show that server names are coherent.
Apr 18 23:06:31 server-1 servermgrd: servermgr_dns: hostname and DNS entries for this server are synchronized
    - Tried rebooting.
    - Tried running servermgrd with various flags, including alternate port but nothing happen. In fact the alternate ports do noot seem to get open. Even passing faulty options, it runs without complaining !
    - Tried to reinstall the admin tools
    - Tried to remove keychain paswords entries
    - Tried Disk Utilities repair permissions.
Searching the posts, found somebody talkingabout servermgr_ctl
I'm starting to suspect some hardware failure (RAM).
Any suggestion how to test the ram.
    Running out of idea.
    Desperate for solution.
    Background
    OS X Server 10.4.9
Server Admin version Version 10.4.7 (157.8)
Xserve Dual G4 with 2 GB ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok, I ran memtest 4.2 and discovered the ram was failing, In replacing the dimm, they started working again so it may have been a mis-seated dimm module or some oxidation on the contact. My file system was already corrupt despite it being a fresh install. Then I checked and notice that the file com.apple.servermgrd.plist in Library preferences was gone. Either I stuppidly deleted it trying to fix the problem or it was hosed by the memory/file system corruption. Anyway, I copied it from another server and Both Server Admin and Server Monitor are now working.
    SOLVED.
PS: in view of this event, once I'm satisfied the memory issues is solved, I'll do again a clean install. Who know what else was corrupted.
