Let's Do the Shuffle

Simple question. Is there a way to create a custom workout that can shuffle within a playlist? I have playlist that's mostly metal songs that get me going, and I have it set to that playlist on my custom but I want it to shuffle play when I start a workout within that playlist.
thanks

Hello,
Navigate to Music > Playlists > {playlist name} > Shuffle The Shuffle will be limited to that playlist.

What a pain -on a mac- never had aproblem- loaded a new shuffle with music - will not let me sync itunes store bought songs- will not let me authorize the computer. I have a ipod as well. Is this a block when loading a second device? OR?

In iTunes, do Store->View my AppleID
    Click "Deuthorize ALL"
Then, on any computers you still have, do Store->Authorize this computer.  If there are less than 5, you will have no problem.
You can only do "deauthorize all" once a year, so in the future, if you ever throw a computer away, remember do to "Store->Deauthorize this computer" first.

I just bought a new Nano.  How do I tranfer the songs from my Shuffle to my husband so he can open an itunes account of his own?

    DaisyDoodle,
The songs on your Shuffle should still be in your iTunes library.  That means you should just be able to connect your Nano to the same iTunes library and sync it just as you would with your Shuffle. There is no limit to the number of iPods, iPads, or iPhones you can sync to one computer, iTunes library, or account.
As for preparing the Shuffle for your husband, just restore it via iTunes and then let him sync it to his own iTunes library or if its the same iTunes library, let him configure it to sync only his content.
Here are instructions on how to restore the Shuffle if need be.

  • "Why Does The Shuffle Songs Feature Perform So Poorly?"

    How'dee,
I have an iPod 160G Classic, I've spent the last 3 months taking my 2,247 "Owned" cd's (I'm a retired dj), an ripped them with identical settings and transfered them flawlessly onto my iPod. I now have a total of 26,311 tracks on my iPod. "FWI"- I tranfered each "Complete" album, no individual tracks... I had been looking forward to being able to Shuffle through my music and not actually listening to individual ablums at a time. I work as a security guard and I am able/allowed to use my iPod via my Bose dock.
I have been listening to my iPod in Shuffle Mode for 3 full weeks now and I am finding that I'm continually listening to the same 30 or so albums out of the full 2,247 that are on my iPod, sometimes it will actually play a song from a perticular album and then play Another track from that same album within the next 10 - 15 tracks!
In the end I'm hearing One New Track that I haven't heard yet every 15 - 20 or so tracks while at the same time I'm hearing tracks from the same albums and or groups throughout the 15 - 20 tracks that have played... As an example, I have 4 albums from the group KISS, I hear tracks from those 4 albums atleast 3 - 5 times every day - day & half... Why does the Shuffle Mode work so poorly? I can't see for the life of me why the so-called "Shuffle Mode" doesn't Shuffle through "ALL" of the 2,247 tracks that are on the iPod.
I've even gone as far as to use a cable to plug my iPod into a regular radio allowing me "Not" to charge my iPod until the battery is almost dead, allowing it to play continuously for my entire 8 hour shift in Shuffle Mode. And then just resume the next shift for another 8 hours, again, until the battery is almost dead. I've gotten around 35+ hours per charge over the last 2 weeks.
"My whole reason for spending $350. on this iPod was so that I could listen to my album collection as though I were listening to a radio... shuffling through "All" of my tracks. I'm now sitting here kicking myself in the a$$ for seemingly wasting my money..."
    Any insight would be appreciated.
And just to let it be known, I have attempted to play tracks manually just to see if they are even workable transfers and I haven't come across any problems with the music that I put on the iPod.
    The ToxicOne...

It is true - "random" does not mean that you should not hear two songs from the same album (or artist) in close proximity. However, as the number of albums increases, the likelihood of hearing multiple (sometimes three or four) cuts from the same album decreases. And the chances of this happening EVERY time a new shuffle is started is even less likely. Comparing flipping a coin (a 0.5 probability of any given result) to a library with over 2000 albums (a .0005 probability of a track from any given album) is comparing apples to oranges. Also, given one of the posts above which indicated hearing the same *progression of songs* indicates that the mathematical algorithm used by Apple to simulate randomness (as there is no such thing as true randomness in computer programming) is just not up to snuff.

  • Music is on the shuffle but doesn't show in iTunes

Okay. I've never had this problem before; I've got a 160GB iPod video and an old pink mini, both of which work fine with my computer(s) and iTunes.
My problem is the shuffle. I got the 2GB one brand new, straight from Apple. I keep all of my music on an external drive. When I first hooked up the shuffle along with the external drive it had a major freak out and one would disconnect the other one every time I tried to use both at once. So I googled, read that sometimes you can't have other things plugged in at the same time as the shuffle. Ended up hooking both to a USB hub and they worked perfectly together.
Plugged the shuffle back in today and there was no music listed on the shuffle in iTunes, however, it said that I had used up however many megabytes, with 71 songs on the shuffle. (You know the little bar down at the bottom?) Ejected it, hit play, and the music is all there. Reconnected, added one song, and it wiped out everything on the shuffle. So I readded everything I had on there, ejected, made sure I didn't have any playback problems, reconnected, and now the same thing is happening again. The bar shows that I've used the space but doesn't list any of my music. I haven't tried to add any more songs because I don't want to go through readding all of that stuff again right now.
So, any thoughts? I disabled automatic syncing for all of my iPods, and I don't use the autofill option. I've only used one of my computers to add music so far, and haven't had any problems adding purchased content.
Any help would be greeeatly appreciated. And if anyone is in need of a visual for what I'm talking about, screen caps are here:

but the iPod shuffle doesn't show up in the drives section so I can't change it to begin with.
Per the article above, you don't start with changing the drive letter of your iPod. You start by changing the drive letter of your networked volume (usually, an external drive).
    "Resolution
    Solution
This issue is documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base document 297694, "New Drive or Mapped Network Drive Not Available in Windows Explorer".
Changing the drive letter of your network volume should resolve the issue. If you are unable to change the drive letter of the network volume because your programs depend on a specific drive letter, then you can use the following steps to change the drive letter of your iPod instead.
Important: Changing the iPod drive letter may not affect what letter the iPod uses on subsequent connections, so it is not the best long-term solution. If you are unable to change the drive letter of your mapped network drives, contact your system administrator."

You do not.  Content is permanently tied to the Apple ID that it was acquired with.
Sign out of the computer with the new Apple ID.  STOP using the new Apple ID.
Sign in with the original Apple ID that the content was acquired with.

  • Got the shuffle G2 to work with XP- somewhat....

I like everyone else with a shuffle have been having problems with Windows not recognizing the iPod, it would show up in the device manager as an "unknown device" under the USB root hub. I tried all the uninstalling/rebooting/reinstalling crap and nothing fixed it. I finally downloaded the shuffle restore utility from Apple, ran that and suddenly it worked- Windows recognized it and showed as my G drive, latest itunes software linked up to it and I was able to load it up with songs for my son. I "ejected" the shuffle from within iTunes like they say you should and tried it out- plays songs fine.
I thought I'd try hooking it right back up to the computer to see if I'd found the "holy grail" of fixes for all of us Windows people that Apple doesn't seem to care about. Got a big fat "unknown device" message again...
I'm thinking that we may have to run the shuffle through the restore utility every time to get windows to recognize the shuffle. I know, you'll lose all your stored songs when you do that, but until Apple decides to provide us with a working USB driver for Windows (like every other "mass storage device" in the world has) we'll all have to suffer.

It did show up as the G: drive- the only other time the G: drive shows up in the profile is when I'd connect a USB storage stick- like one of those small keychain storage devices so you wouldn't think there would be a conflict. I don't have both the Shuffle and USB storage drive plugged in at the same time.
I'll try it again and change the ipod drive letter- thanks !

  • The shuffle won't stop

I have had my 30GB video ipod for almost a year now. My powerbook g4 (which I have had for over a year) got messed up and I had to take it in to get fixed. They had to erase and reinstall everything. I had backed up all my itunes music on an external harddrive. When I went to reconnect my itunes and pick up the library from my external harddrive, somehow all my songs from the ext. harddrive got deleted. I managed to find a way to get all my songs from my ipod back onto the itunes (although I have been having some technical difficulties). I finally got it all worked out. Now for the last 3 days, the shuffle on my ipod just skips through songs and settles on one after going through at least 10 to 15 (taking a couple minutes) before settling on the songs it decides to settles on. It also won't always let me listen to a certain song (even after I shut off the shuffle). PLEASE HELP!! I have tried resetting my ipod and everything. I don't know what to do!

thunderbird is indexing every time I click on a message (slow). I've deleted global-messages-db.sqlite. compacted. let it rebuild the db. Version 24.4
McAfee shield stays busy the entire time it's indexing. I also deleted about 80% of the messages it was trying to reindex. No joy.
    Thanks

I have been having this same problem: but it does not appear to have been due to my antivirus (Comodo). In my case the system is not just slow: the indexer seems to hang permanently. I suspected file corruption in one of my inboxes. But, whereas the Activity Manager gives the name of the sub-folder it is currently working on, it does not appear to report the name of the inbox.
So to trace the corrupt file I had to keep moving emails from my inboxes to sub-folders until the system was able to give me the name of the sub-folder it was working on. Then, by shuffling emails between folders, I was finally able to identify the offending message. This was extremely tedious and time-consuming, as I had to restart Thunderbird every time I did a reshuffle in order to re-initialise the indexing process. The culprit turned out to be a copy of a phishing email I had previously reported. I'm guessing it contained intentionally bad data that confused the indexing system.
However, it seems that this wasn't the only corrupt file: so I've yet to test all my other inboxes when I've got several more hours available,
A problem like this would be much easier to trace if the indexer always clearly identified which folder it was examining or attempting to index, e.g. by prefixing the inbox with the mailbox folder name. That way one could tell immediately which inbox or sub-folder was the source of the problem.

  • I broke the shuffle

I hooked my shuffle into the USB outlet, picked up my iBook and while walking into the other room I hit the shuffle into the wall!! I'm an idiot. Anyway, The only piece that broke was that little part where you plug it in, and what looks to me like a little piece of tape is torn. So, I'm wondering if it's possible to get fixed or if i'm going to spend another hundred bucks... arghhhh.......... anyway, if anyone knows what I should do, please let me know!! Meg

Something tells me that "little piece of tape" is the data cable coming off the USB port. http://www.applematters.com/index.php/gallery/image_full/9/ With out that to my knowledge your shuffle's unfortunately gone. We all make mistakes some worse than others.

  • Windows sees the Shuffle, iTunes and the Updater do not

This is a problem on my computer, but just my computer. I know because I connected it to my fiancee's computer and was able to update it just fine.
I have followed all the steps Here, and even went through and cleaned out the registry and iTunes and the updater still don't see it. I've been getting the "Can't Mount iPod" error in the Updater, and the updater even freezes when I first plug in the Shuffle.
It worked fine on my computer the last time I had used it, which was a couple months ago, but hasn't since. I have reinstalled Windows, up to Service Pack 4, in the meantime. I've seen some mention of that here as a potential problem, but haven't found a solution.

  • So what is Apple and I-Tunes doing about the Shuffle mess??

    Some communication would be nice!!
From all of the posts in the last few days, it seems to be apparent that Apple and/or I-Tunes is having a real mess!! Last week my computer(an old Compac Presario) did not even recognize my shuffle. I tried it a few times every day. Magically on Sunday, my computer not only recognized it, but sent an update, which worked fine.
Monday, working-out in the pool, it died. (I should add here that my shuffle has been waterproffed by 'SWIMMAN' and I have a waterproof headset and the whole thing has been fine for the last 15 months!).
Later on Monday, I attached it to my computer to be charged and the computer kept saying that it needed to be plugged into a high-speed port. So I turned on my new laptop, downloaded I-Tunes and plugged in the shuffle. I-Tunes came back and said the shuffle could only be associated with one computer and was going to erase my shuffle and resync it, OK? I said no! I then got information on how to copy my 4GB of files without making 6 backup discs and proceeded to copy all the files to the new computer.
After that was finished, I plugged in the shuffle and got absolutly no response from I-Tunes, my computer did not even recognize the shuffle as a drive! So many times yesterday and this morning I tried it again and again and no response!
As I started writing this post, on the old computer, I thought "Let me try once more". Well what do you think?? The new computer recognized the shuffle as 'SMIMMAN iPod', only a few recently added tracks were missing, and it seems to be working. So I'm giving it plenty of time to charge.
Right now it might be working fine, but what is being done to prevent this from continuing? There was one post about reseting the utility program. How can you do that when the shuffle is not being recognized by the computer?
Another pet pieve... I-Tunes has the 'settings' tab with information it reads from the shuffle. Why can't it read and report the level battery charge? My lights don't blink when the charge is low (the waterproofing may have something to do with that). Your laptop tells you when you battery is low, why not I-Tunes??
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Linda

My shuffle came from SWIMMAN who has worked with Apple to make the shuffle waterproof. Everything had been working just fine both in and out of the water until Monday, March 10 when I was sent an update from I-Tunes. All of the problems have been since then. Sometimes my computer recognizes it, right now it's not.
This morning it worked fine for an hour, now it's dead and not being recognized.
From reading the posts here since this past Monday, it looks to me as if there is a problem with Apple and I-Tunes.
Also from looking at the posts, there are many others with the same problem and none of them have been answered successfully!

  • The shuffle function is misbehaving

    Hello there!
My iPod Touch (4th generation) has a bit of trouble with the shuffle option. I discovered the problem some weeks ago with a short playlist and here's the problem: it randomly skips one song and repeats another. The "track x out of x" line says it's playing a new song, even though it played the same song some minutes ago. The song it skips and the song it repeats are completely random. Here's an example of how it goes:
1st round: All tracks are played
2nd round: Track 1 is skipped, track 4 is played twice
3rd round: Track 3 is skipped, track 2 is played twice
..and so forth. So far I haven't found a solution to the problem. I contacted an Apple employee through the telephone support who said he couldn't help me, and I've tried to search the Internet for an answer without any luck.
Other useful information: the software is updated, and I have tried to reset the device. None of the songs have the "skip during shuffle" option ticked.

Disregard this thread. Just realised my error. The Zen 6GB will let you shuffle around a playlist manually.

Did you check the Zoom setting?
Have you tried a reset (reboot)? Hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears.
If it isn't Zoom and a reboot doesn't help try Settings/General/Reset - Reset all settings
