Let us manually edit the internal dicitionary!

This is a feature that MANY other phones have, and there is no reason for the iPhone not to have it. I know, for instance, no matter how many times I tell it not to spell GABA when I type gana (I know, poor grammar, but whatever) it ALWAYS wants to use that abbreviation in place of my word. I don't even know what GABA is. And I have x'ed GABA about a million times now, just on my new phone. And this is a constant annoyance for about 50-100 words I use on a regular basis. It is absolutely infuriating.
How hard is it to add one simple little feature that many people would use ALL the time, that sooooooo many other phones have.
Apple,
Please see reason and add the ability to let us customize the internal dictionary. Thanks.

  • Can I manually edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file

    Here's why.
Noticed on my Apple TV that there were a number of podcasts that when selected would say "Apple TV cannot play the current song".
Looked in iTunes and these podcasts are no where to be found. Did some searches in Spotlight and also, turned up zeros. Not found.
I then looked directly into my iTunes Music Library.xml file and sure enough there are the records.
What is odd is that the location of all the bad songs have a similar invalid path.
    Bad path.
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/iTunes/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Podcasts/KQED/podcast.mp3</string>
    Correct Path
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/iTunes/Music/Podcasts/KQED'/podcast.mp3</string>
Now, all of these have dates that lead me to believe this was due to an iTunes upgrade back in September of 2005. It doesn't look like they are causing problems with iTunes itself. However, it is quite annoying for my Apple TV.
Question. Is there a different way to fix this than just manually removing the entries from the xml file?
I haven't tried to edit the iTunes Music Library.xml file just yet as I want to make I don't totally screw things up first.

I did some additional testing here and I deleted the track information from the iTunes Music Library.xml
On start up of iTunes, it does not add the deleted file back in. On the Apple TV, it still shows the bad file.
What I think that means is that even the Apple TV gets its playlist information from another source.
I have also started on another track which is to remove all of my podcasts from iTunes. Which I have now done.
The only ones left are these bad tracks that only show up in the iTunes Music Library.xml file and more importantly on my Apple TV.
I'd put this on the podcast or the Apple TV thread, but still believe this is an iTunes issue.

  • XMP - MP3 Files, Manually editing the text

    Hi Again,
Always trying to fix something that's not broken, raises a question.
If I import a mp3 with meta data in it into after effects, and I edit the marker's comment, does this actually change the text that will be saved in the F4v file? the problem I have is that XMP seems to only work with english and we'd like a searchable video in Russian.
    thanks. :-)

XMP is full Unicode (like any XML flavor is required), so there are no language problems per se. Actual searchability therefore would just depend on the host app providing access to it based on the language settings, i.e. you will probably have to work on a Russian system to see proper results...

  • Edit the release date of a podcast ?

    Hello everyone !
I have a question regarding iTunes and podcasts management. I really enjoy a specific podcast, which I follow from a few monthes. A friend of mine has given me the whole archives of the show, from more than two years, as plain mp3 files. I successfully added them to iTunes, then specified them as podcasts so that they would appear in the right section of the library.
But there is a glitch : the old podcasts do not have a release date, on the contrary to the more recent ones that I have downloaded from the iTunes store. I would like to manually edit the release dates of the old files so that they fit with the new ones, but I can't seem to find the corresponding field in the informations window...
So if any of you have a solution, I would be very interested !
    Thanks in advance !
    Thomas
    (I'm running iTunes 10.4.1 (10) and Mac OS X 10.7.1)

Hi, Thomas. It took me several hours of scouring the Internet and testing solutions on my computer, but I finally have answers for you:
This will be a comprehensive answer that includes solutions to some things you may not have asked about. It's so I can copy this answer into several other threads where similar questions are being asked.
Q: How do I add an mp3 podcast file to Mac iTunes 10.6.3 (the latest version as of July 13, 2012)?
    1. Open iTunes, go to the FILE menu, select ADD TO LIBRARY, select your mp3 file in the dialog box, and click on Open.
    2. The file will most likely have been added to your Music library and not your Podcast library. If this is the case, select the newly-added podcast in your Music library, go to the FILE menu, select GET INFO, click on the OPTIONS tab of the dialog box, change the MEDIA KIND dropdown menu to "Podcast," and click on OK. Your mp3 podcase should move to the Podcasts library.
Q: Now that I've added the mp3 podcast to my Podcasts library in iTunes, how do I change the release date so that it shows up in the proper order with all the other podcasts in that series?
    1. Download the program ID3 Editor from http://www.pa-software.com/id3editor/
    2. After you've downloaded, extracted, and moved the application to your Applications folder, open ID3 Editor.
    3. Go to the FILE menu in ID3 Editor and choose OPEN and select your mp3 file from the iTunes Music folder (not the original mp3 which may be in a different location on your computer). If you don't know where it is, go to iTunes, right-click (or <Control>-click) on the podcast, and select SHOW IN FINDER to see its exact location. The usual path is USER NAME > MUSIC > iTUNES MUSIC > PODCASTS > folder with name of podcast.
    4. Your podcast will open in ID3 Editor with the Standard tab active. Click on the EXTENDED tab to see the RELEASED tag field.
    5. In the RELEASED tag field, add or change the podcast release date to whatever you want it to be. The format is 2012-07-13 16:30:00 (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS).
    6. Click on UPDATE in the lower left and the file will close with your changes saved.
    7. Select the newly-updated podcast in your Music library, go to the FILE menu, select GET INFO, and click on OK to update the information in iTunes. The podcast should now move to the proper place in order when sorted by Release Date.
Q: My podcasts are in different folders instead of all being in the same folder. How do I group them back together?
    1. To make all your podcasts show up in the same folder, the IDENTIFIER and FEED tags need to match for all podcasts.
    2. Open ID3 Editor and open all of the podcasts you want to group in iTunes under one folder. (Remember to open the files from within the iTunes Music > Podcasts folder and not from your desktop or Documents folder where you may have stored originals downloaded from the podcast's website.)
    3. For each mp3 file opened in ID3 Editor, switch from the Standard tab to the PODCASTS tab.
    4. If you have a podcast that shows up properly in iTunes and should be the default name/location for all the other disparate podcasts in the series, bring that file's window forward and copy the URL from its IDENTIFIER field.
    5. For every other mp3 file for that podcast that you have open in ID3 Editor, PASTE that URL in to the respective IDENTIFIER field for each one.
    6. From the same file you copied the Identifier URL, now copy the FEED URL.
    7. For every other mp3 file for that podcast that you have open in ID3 Editor, PASTE that URL in to the respective FEED field for each one.
    8. For every podcast file, make sure ENABLE PODCAST TAG is checked (in the upper left of the Podcast tab).
    9. Now you have to number all the files properly. To do that, you need to be in the STANDARD tab in ID3 Editor.
    10. Count up the total number of podcasts in the series you're consolidating. That TOTAL# number will go in the second TRACK field in the upper left (i.e., Track # of TOTAL#)
    11. In the first TRACK field in the upper left, number your files in the order you want them to be listed (i.e., TRACK# of Total#). Also put the TRACK# in the TRACK field in the upper right (next to "Enable V1 tag").
    12. Click on UPDATE in the lower left of each file to close each one with your changes saved.
    13. For each of the newly-updated podcast files in your Music library, select it so that it's highlighted, go to the FILE menu, select GET INFO, and click on OK to update the information in iTunes. Once you've done this for every file, all podcasts in the series should be under one folder. (If not, make sure the ALBUM field matches exactly for each file.)
I hope the above resolves all the difficulties you've experienced with Podcasts in iTunes. If not, let me know and I'll add more detail (or correct any inadvertent errors in my instructions).

  • Manually Edit An Alias Original File Path?

How do I edit the original path that an alias uses?
I have created an alias to a network volume, but the patch that the alias is using is by share name (/Volumes/Share Name) whereas I want it to use the ip (/192.168.2.5/folder).
However, I can't figure out how to manually edit the alias path. Once upon a time the "Select new original" dialoge box had a "Go to:" line where you could manually enter a path but in 10.4 it is gone).
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, you could do a couple of things. You could place the .afplocs files somewhere in the hard drive (e.g.: /Documents/afploc_folder) and then place aliases to those .afplocs in the doc (just drag them to the Dock from the Finder). You can even assign them custom names and icons through Get Info.
Another option would be save the .afploc file, and then select the original alias you wanted to modify, and assign it the .afploc as new original through Get Info.
Both these methods provide you with a clickable dock icon, that will connect to the volume.
I vaguely remember about a BSD command called mkalias that creatd aliases from the command line rather than from the Finder, but have no details on that. Maybe you should do a little research about it.
    Good Luck.

  • RoboHelp 9 Overwriting Manual Edits to HHP

    Hello,
We have always been able to merge our multi-file help system by manually editing the [MERGE FILES] section of the .HHP before our final compile.  With RoboHelp 9, we manually edit that section, but when we open a RoboHelp project and just compile, RoboHelp overwrites that section with hardcoded rather than relative paths, breaking the merge as soon as we move the .CHMs to a different location than the authoring folder.
Can anyone help?  Is there another tool that we could compile the projects with that won't overwrite the .HHP?
    Karen Graf

    Hi Colum,
I think I may have found a clue to my problems on merging our RoboHelp 9 HTML Help projects.  After I compile all the child projects, I then compile the parent (Master) project and copy the HHC down to the child projects to complete the merge.  Then when I compile the child projects again, the Outlook View displays the following error message but compiles "successfully" anyway:
    MCMaster.hhc
    HHC3004: Warning:
    MCMaster.hhc :
The HTML tag "?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?" is not a valid HTML tag (it does not begin with an alphanumeric character).
However, when I view the help projects, the TOCs and Indexes are not populated.  The tabs are there, but blank.
If I copy the old McMaster.hhc (the HTML version from RoboHelp 7, not the XML version from RoboHelp 9) back into all the projects, the child projects compile without errors and the TOC and Index are fine!
Does this info help you (or anyone else) help me?

  • I have a new mac and want to sync my phone to the iTunes on it, but it won't let me manually manage without deleting all music on the phone already from another iTunes. is there a way around this?

I have a new mac and want to sync my phone to the iTunes on it, but it won't let me manually manage without deleting all music on the phone already from another iTunes. is there a way around this?

    The best solution:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
An alternative which is really not what you should have to do, or the way it is intended to be done, if you properly manage your computer and backups:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned above).  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
    - Senuti - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/
    - Phoneview - http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/
    - MusicRescue - http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/products/musicrescue/ - Mac & Windows
    - Sharepod (free) - http://download.cnet.com/SharePod/3000-2141_4-10794489.html?tag=mncol;2 - Windows
    - Snowfox/iMedia - http://www.mac-videoconverter.com/imedia-transfer-mac.html - Mac & PC
    - Yamipod (free) - http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/downloads/ - PC, Linux, Mac [Still updated for use on newer devices? No edits to site since 2010.]
    - Post by Zevoneer: iPod media recovery options - https://discussions.apple.com/message/11624224 - this is an older post and many of the links are also for old posts, so bear this in mind when reading them.
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141 - dates from 2008 and some outdated information now.
Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/ - Information about use in disk mode pertains only to older model iPods.
    Additional information here https://discussions.apple.com/message/18324797
Do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up.

I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)

You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.

  • Is there a way to manually custom-edit the "Date created" and "Date modified" attributes of files in Mac OS 10.6?

In "List View" in a Finder window, among the many column options are "Date created" and "Date modified." In "View Options" (command-J) for any folder, one can add these columns, along with the standard ones "Size," "Kind," "Label," etc.
A user can alter a file's name, and a file's "label" (i.e. its color). On the other hand, a user can NOT arbitrarily edit/alter a file's official "size" -- other than by physically altering the contents of the file itself, obviously.
But what about a file's "Date created" and "Date modified"? Can either of those be manually edited/changed, just as a file's name can be changed -- or is a file's creation-date an immutable attribute beyond the editorial reach of the user, just as a file's "size" is?
And yes, a person can "alter" a file's "Date modified" by simply modifying the file, which would change its "Date modified" to be the moment it was last altered (i.e. right now). But (and here's the key question) can a user somehow get inside a file's defining attributes and arbitrarily change a file's modification date to be at any desired point in the past that's AFTER its creation date and BEFORE the present moment? Or will so doing cause the operating system to blow a gasket?
If it is possible to arbitrarily manually alter a file's creation date or modification date, how would it be done (in 10.6)? And if it is NOT possible, then why not?

    sanjempet --
    Whew, that's a relief!
But as for your workaround solution: All it will achieve is altering the created and modified dates to RIGHT NOW. What I'm looking to do is to alter the modification/creation dates to some point in the past.
I'm not doing this for any nefarious reason. I just like to organize my work files chronologically according to when each project was initiated, but sometimes I forget to gather the disparate documents all into one folder right at the beginning, and as a result, sometimes after I finish a job, I will create a new folder to permanently house all the files in an old project, and when that folder is places in a bigger "completed projects" folder and then is organized by "Date created" or "Date modified" in list view, it is out-of-order chronologically because the creation and modification dates of that particular project folder reflect when the folder was created (i.e. today), and not when the files inside the folder were created (i.e. weeks or months ago).
The simplest solution would simply to be able to back-date the folder's creation or modification date to match the date that the project actually started!
