LG 55" Smart TV defect

I would never buy another LG product due to the issues I have had with my LG 55" Smart TV. I purchased the TV in April 2013 and on Sept 9th I had to get it service. The TV was cutting off and then cutting back on by itself. Company came out and fixed. Then about 6 weeks later it started doing the same thing. So on Oct. 30th they came back out and fixed it again. Then on Nov. 3rd, it started doing it again. I just got it fixed yesterday. They have changed out the power supply, the main board, and the whole screen panel. Basically I have a new TV. Seems like they should have just replaced the TV. May have been cheaper.

So what's your question?

  • Ipad smart case defects

I bought 2 ipad smart cases for my ipad and both cases are not usable since the base attaching the frame and the back have separated. The adhesive has gven way. This is quite disappointing considering the ipads do not leave our house often--so note exposed to the elements. Pls address this so that future smart cases don not easly break like these ones.

This isn't the place to complain about the quality of a product, take it to an Apple store.

  • Miserable experience with replacement LG Fathom, that replaced defective TP2

    Freezes
    It does freeze.
    Alarms don't work right
I use the alarms & those didn't work right. I had set 1 for 9:30 pm & 1 for 10 pm,  The 10 pm one got up to 12 alarms--even though only 1 was set. Tech support wanted me to do a hard reboot but wasn't very thrilled about that as I would then have to reinstall software & re-set up linking & set up email all over again.
After awhile I turned off the alarms. But they still went off. I did check--they were turned off. & then it got so the 9:30 one would freeze the whole phone. I couldn't activate the buttons to make it stop or snooze---they didn't respond & the whole phone was frozen so I would have to reset.
Finally I deleted both alarms & set them up again. Working better, but again the 9:30 one has about 6 alarms that go off so I have to stop each one. I think one time I stopped all & the 10 pm one didn't go off. They are supposed to help remind me to start windiing down--the 9:30 one & then to seriously shut down the computer & get ready for bed.
Sometimes they don't seem to go off or accidentally get turned off.
Volume buttons can get bumped & turn to silen so calls missed
Another issue is that the volume up down buttons can get bumped. A while ago I was trying to set up a drs appt I think it was & was waiting for a call back. I finally called them back when I hadn't heard. I think they said they had tried to call. Later I saw that they had--4x but I discovered the volume was turned off so I missed those important calls.  Not good.
The keyboard is not very nice.
    Downgrade replacement for defective TP2
This was a replacement for my defective Touch Pro 2. I had paid for that top of the line phone, & in CA we have to pay sales tax on the full list price!  Someone (obviously going by the specs, not actual usage) raved about how this phone was supposed to be so super. NOT.  The list price was about half that of the TP2. It doesn't have the digital voice recorder the TP2 did, nor a lot of the HTC features that I liked & used like the automatic vibrate for appts that were listed as busy. & I really miss the way that I was able to set several cities up in world clock & then I could easily see what time it was & what the weather was. Nice when friends were in those ciities.
The keyboard on this is smaller & I keep getting periods in the middle of the sentence when typing emails which then makes the next letter a capital &makes it hard to read. It has 1 less row in the keyboard. The phone is smaller than the TP2, so easier to carry, but harder to see.
Someone called me on Thanksgiving & I didn't recognize the area code, but I was trying to answer & must have accidentally used the wrong slider so the call disappeared. Then there was some icon at the top, but it was so small I couldn't really tell that it was a voice mail indicator, so I didn't check until way late at night.
Verizon called this an upgrade--even though it was actually a replacement for a top of the line phone (the TP2 was a cool phone, if only it had worked well but it got so that it would randomly change orientation while I was trying to read an email, & it got so the backlight wouldn't always come on & sometimes even after pressing it multiple times) but I would call this a downgrade. While the processor is about 2x as fast as the TP2, it doesn't really work noticeably faster. I guess that's the winmob OS.
    Win mobile issues
& of course then Microsoft did a # on users of WinMob 6.5 when they came out with Windows phone 7 which is totally incompatible. So phones that ran 6.5 can't run 7 & the software is incompatible. I had gotten it for busines where we had aps that needed 6.5.
It has been a miserable experience with both of these phones, when I bought the TP2 I went for the premium phone, planning to keep it for over 2 years. Instead it had multiple issues its 1st year which I put up with for months. Finally got the replacement Fathom, which again, Verizon kept calling an upgrade but its really a downgrade.  I had paid for a top of the line phone, & got an inferior phone, smaller keyboard, & screen, less features & it doesn't work so well.
Are smart phones less reliable than regular cell phones?
I don't know if smart phones in general are less relaible than regular cell phones or what, but my experience has been very frustrating all the way. These are supposed to be productivity enhancers. Instead I've had way too many issues, & often tech support, while usually nice & trying to help, they didn't always know what they were talking about.
Want a reliable smart phone that does what it is supposed to do--feel ripped off
So I'm frustrated with this not very reliable phone & want to get a reliable phone. But I sure wasn't planning to have to buy a new phone this soon. My previous phone was a basic LG flip phone with speaker & no camera & that thing just worked so I kept it for about 5 years until I needed the win mob phone for biz. I no longer need it for that, & it isn't working very well, but I don't really want to spend the $ for a new phone right now.
Really frustrated with the bad experiences with both phones.  I feel like I didn't get what I paid for & again I went for a top of the line phone, intending to keep it for several years, not expecting all the problems I've had with both phones. btw, the Fathom retail price was about half that of the TP2, even though the 2 yr agreement price was the same. but in CA we pay sales tax on the full retail.
I would like to be able to get another smart phone that is really reliable like an iPhone, but really wasn't planning on buying a new phone this soon.

    Greetings caatkins4,
When your phone is the lifeline to your job, it would be most frustrating to experience issues such as the ones you've described, especially if you do not have a back up in place for when things go wrong. All of our phones are tested to make sure they meet the manufacturer’s specifications before being sent out. It is regretful to hear that the refurbished Samsung Galaxy Note 3 you received may not have met these specifications once it was in your hands.
I was able to review your services when I located your Geek Squad Protection plan with the email address you registered with the forum. Unfortunately, at this time we would only be able to provide you with another replacement. It appears we've already created the service order necessary, and presently, it appears that a tracking number has been created for your replacement phone. It should ship soon if it hasn't already, as it sometimes takes up to 24 hours for UPS to update their shipping information.
I apologize if this is of any inconvenience to you. If you should have any questions, please feel welcome to reach out to me.

  • EA4500 – Smart Wi-Fi interface and Windows Network Map issues

I purchased this Router about 2 weeks ago as a phased upgrade of our Home Network, primarily to enhance media streaming. It has the latest firmware preinstalled from the factory. Prior to the purchase and installation of the EA4500 Router I replaced my old Motorola SurfBoard SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem with a Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. My old Linksys E2000 Router worked perfectly with the SB6141, with the exception that the E2000 wasn’t IPv6 enabled, but does have 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet (RJ-45) and Internet ports.
The EA4500 has been installed for about 10 days and seems to have improved local network speeds and I don’t seem to be having any Internet connectivity issues. However, there are some disturbing issues with the EA4500 and the AE3000 I purchased. There are 11 devices connected through the Router; a Dell Desktop (wireless with the AE3000), a Dell Desktop (Ethernet), a Dell Laptop (wireless), 2 Canon Printers (1 Ethernet and 1 Wireless), 2 Western Digital 1TB MyBookLive Network Drives (both Ethernet), a WD TV Live Streaming Media Player (wireless), an Apple TV media player (wireless), an iPad (wireless), and an Android Smartphone (wireless).
Issue 1 – The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi interface appears to be unreliable at times!!! I’ve read about this problem here on the Community involving the EA6500, so I don’t know if this is a Linksys Server issue, as suggested in a few responses, or a bug in the Router firmware, or defective hardware. However, when the interface locks up, it can’t be accessed from a wireless or wired connection. Usually, powering down the Router and then powering it back up and restart will allow it to function again. However, at times before the interface completely locks up it shows either just a white screen or the security screen will show no firewall features enabled. This is a little scary, so I’ll do a complete reset and setup; this is becoming a pain in the rear!!!!! Is there any hope for this being fixed, in this Router, not the next generation??????????
Issue 2 - All of my network devices show up in the Router’s Device List. Except for the Apple devices they also show up, when they are online, in Windows 7 Explorer under Network and when you click on Network they are correctly displayed as Computers, Media Devices, Network Infrastructure, or Storage. However, when you click on “Open Network and Sharing Center” and then click on “See Full Map”; it fails with the response “Windows cannot create the network map. Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network”; no device map is shown. When I follow the link for more information, the only thing that stands out is “A device on the network, such as a hub or switch, is not working properly or is not compatible with the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol, which Windows uses to create the map. To fix this problem, disable the device, turn it off, or remove it from your network”. All of my network devices showed up on the Network Map with the old E2000. This issue is the same on all of my computers, either wired or wireless. Any known solutions for this, or is it as Windows suggests; an incompatible Router????
Thanks in advance for any insight or solutions. With the issues I’m having with the EA4500 and the AE3000; they are both probably going back to Amazon.

thebluemamba_24; Thank you for your suggestion; I finally found time yesterday to perform an extensive evaluation before I return the Router. However, rather than trying to add devices manually, my rationale was if the EA4500 can’t process them correctly, automatically, it needs to be returned anyway, so I added devices normally letting the device an Router handle the process.
In thinking through this issue, all devices on our network are detected and identified by Windows Explorer on Windows 7 computers; except of course the Apple and Android devices (Apple TV, iPad, and Smartphone). So, I wondered if one of those three devices being added to the Router’s device list was somehow causing issues or interfering with Windows 7’s ability to generate a Network Map. Therefore, my approach was to turn off or disable all devices on our network, reset the Router to factory defaults, reestablish the Router to my custom Home Network configuration using a Windows 7 PC that has LAN and Wireless access to the Router, then add one device at a time and check with each addition to see if Windows 7 could still generate a Network Map.
With the Router reset and reestablishment complete; I began the process of adding one device at a time and checking to see if a Network Map was being generated. What I discovered was when a recent addition to the network, a Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player, was connected (wirelessly), Windows 7 could no longer generate the Network Map and the failure was consistent. The only way to get the Network Map to work again was to remove power from the WD TV Live, although it remained in the EA4500’s Device List; simply turning it off didn’t help. Since I’d originally witnessed the Windows 7 Network Map working with the Linksys E2000 Router that the EA4500 replaced, I decided to test the WD TV Live with that Router. It worked initially, but it failed consistently after the first success. Interestingly, the failure indication was a little different, but nevertheless generation of the Network Map failed.
I’ve tried changing a few settings on the EA4500 as well as the WD TV Live, but nothing helped. There was a recent firmware update to the WD TV Live, so I might try rolling back the firmware to see if it makes a difference.
The Network Map issue might very well be an issue with the WD TV Live, not the Router, but after reading many threads on this Community I have reservations that the problems I’m experiencing with the Smart interface lockup will be fixed. I suspect new emerging replacement products will be the focus and these older products will be abandoned and no more firmware fixes will be forthcoming and I don’t want to spend more money for a new product just to fix old problems and get something that works properly. The Network Map issue is troublesome, but the lockup of the Router’s “Linksys Smart Wi-Fi” interface is a serious matter to me. It appears that once it locks up, the only way to correct it is a power off restart; not practical if you’re traveling and trying to access settings remotely; the selling point for this feature.
Given the problems I’m experiencing with the EA4500 and AE3000, I guess I’ll return them. Too bad, because otherwise the EA4500 seems like it’s a good Router. I’ve been brand loyal since the Linksys WRT54G came out, but after reading this Community and with my personal experience with the EA4500 and AE3000, now I’ll probably give the NETGEAR N900 equivalents a try.

  • Hyperion Smart Cut Session Issue streaming multiple reports at a time using

This is a lengthly post with details, Please review with Patience:
We are trying to integrate Workspace based web Analysis reports within our intranet portal, thru portlets (made from individual workspace smartcut link), so that users can customize their page as needed, Once they login thru intranet, Cookie is set and passed to succeeding smart cut links via secured http headers. This part is fine, but mainly running into issue with streaming several multiple web-analysis reports at a time,+ we are using Iframe to display and stream multiple individual reports on to one page, but unfortunately all Iframes are sharing one session rather than creating individual session, mostly because of limitation of current web analysis system architecture and IE browser behavior with sessions .
Which Hyperion reporting tool does allow to stream multiple reports  at a time? ideally we want to create Iframe of each workspace report so that users can customize and pick portlets as needed. To stream multiple reports at a time.
Problem Description: Hypeiron Web Analsysis, Smart cut reports incorrectly rendering images and intermixing dash boards on POV changes upon multiple reports being diplayed at one time thru Iframe's, issue seem to mostly relate to Hyperion using single session rather to multiple session when displaying several web reports at a time.
    Steps Needed To Reproduce:
    User logs into workspace.
user click on expolore and able to view the report without any issues.
When right on any of the report and select properties.
Select the SmartCut url and paste it in the Internet explorer.
The webanalysis report opens without any issues.
Similarly user copies the smartcut url for a different report and paste the link on a different tab or new window of same browser.
The report on the first tab gets over written of the report of the second tab of the browser.
The issue happens when two different reports and opened on a browser with multiple tabs. The reports get over written.
    Oracle development answer:
In the described scenario opening new browser window does not spawn a separate independent browser session. A new browser window is supplied with URL pointing to the same domain, so all browser cookies including the "ORA_WA_SID" (WA session cookie) are shared between the windows. But multiple application instances cannot run in the same browser session simultaneously because of session sharing. This is not actually a defect, but rather a limitation of current system architecture and browser behavior. And there is no way to fix it programmatically on the product side.

    Hi MeHyper,
Your current arrangement puts most of the session handling and persistence on the client. This forces you to accept whatever the client decides to persist and propogate between browser elements (in this case iframes).
    My approach would be to:
Consider coding your portlets to manage the sessions. Manage using a somewhat stateless strategy so that each request to the server requires a login and connect, retrieve, and disconnect. Each Iframe should access a different portlet url (or provide a different query) based on its content.
This way, in theory, you can invalidate the sessions and related cookies and update the various report elements independently.
Is smartview out of the question here?

    Robb Salzmann

  • My new IPad 3 cannot connect to WIFI even it has a full bar of the reception. In the same location, my PC and my smart phone get a full bar connection without any issues.  How can I do to fix the issues (can I switch to IPad 2)?

My new Ipad 3 cannot connect to WIFI even it has a full bar of reception. In the same location, my Windows 7 PC and Andorid Smart phone can connect to the same WIFI without any issues.  How can I fix it?  Without WIFI, the WIFI only IPAD is nearly useless. If it cannot be fixed, can I get a replacement for IPad 2?

Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation. If defective, you'll get a replacement.

  • Why is my BRAND NEW touch smart screen not recognizing my touch?

I can't figure out why when I purchased my HP touch smart screen computer, at the store on display, it was working, and now when I set it all up, it doesn't recognize my finger touch!

If it doesn't even make a chirping noise when you touch the screen, it may be defective.

  • Organizer defect creates and leaves temporary files in the open directory.

I'm using Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer and Adobe Bridge CS6 concurrently.  If I have Bridge open to the same folder as PSE Organizer and I do an "Add captions ..." operation to a group of files selected in the Organizer, then there is a very good chance that PSE Organizer will rename one or more files to OriginalFileName_edTMP-1.extension and leave the renamed file in the directory rather than completing the update and returning the file(s) to their original name.  In most cases my original files are Nikon .nef files with .xmp sidecar files, but I've also seen this happen with .psd files.  The .nef files are generally large, averaging 35 Mb per .nef image and the .psd files are usually over 100 Mb.  If PSE Organizer and Bridge are open to different folders then Organizer does not leave the renamed file.  Thus I would suggest that there may be a logical threading error in PSE Organizer where it does not consider that another application may be monitoring the folder and also opening the files, which is what Bridge does when it discovers that a file has changed (the addition of a caption changes the file contents.)  This was also a defect in PSE Organizer 10.

I believe you missed the point.  And just for the record I have 40+ years of software engineering experience and do know something about data bases and application programming.  There is a defect in the Photoshop Elements Organizer and I suspect that one of the developers forgot to check a return code from an operation.  I also suspect that what happens is that the Organizer temporarily renames the file it wants to update, makes the update, and then intends or tries to rename it back to the original name.   But with Bridge running in the background and watching to see if there are any changes in the folder, Bridge sees the new file name and makes the file (or possibly the directory) temporarily unavailable to the Organizer as Bridge updates its information and the window display.  If the timing of the operations is just right, the Organizer can't access what it needs to and probably gets a failed return code from the rename operation.  If my supposition is correct, the code doesn't check this return code after the rename operation and just assumes that it took place.  The problem is clearly related to timing (race condition) and is more likely to occur on large files, such as 100+ MB Photoshop files.  Just for the record, I am not actually working with both Organizer and Bridge at the same time.  Bridge is running in the background.  I've learned to avoid the problem by pointing Bridge to a different folder when I do an update in Organizer.  I also realize that information that I might add in Bridge does not show up in the Organizer Catalog, but fortunately Bridge is smart enough to extract tags and titles that I've added with the Organizer once Organizer has written them to the files. The problem that I'm reporting is not an issue about what a user should or can do, it's about safe programming practices.  Adobe will decide if they want to fix it or not.

  • Can't get audio to work on my Panasonic Plasma smart TV when I connect a Toslink optical mini to Toslink optical digital to my mid 2009 MacBook pro?

My MAc book pro 5.5 is mid 2009, Processor speed 2.26 GHZ MacOS X VERSION 10.68 Leopard. My Tv is a Panasonic Plasma smart TV TC-P50ST60. I ordered from Amazon a Toslink optical mini to Toslink optical digital cable meant for Macbook pro 2009 forward. I changed the settings on both TV and Mac but I still can't get audio to work on TV. I believe my Mac can't see the audio output from the TV. Any advice with step by step instructions on how to fix it? could it be they sent me defective cables? Thank You for your help.

When I spoke with Apple I made sure I told them that my Macbook Pro was Mid 2009 and he ensured me again that those to cords will work. I realize that with the newer models it does put through both sound and audio but because of my model I don't think it does obviously because I have played with both Sound on my computer and Sound on the TV and nothing works. Sometime Apple can be good but man some people lol he even told me he verified my computer model on the computer and that's what came up.
So new question would be what kind of cable would I be looking for to get audio? Anyone before I call back to Apple and see what they say hahah

  • Does anyone here have a defective mighty mouse?

I got one, and called apple couple of times not only for the issue, but also for the investigation, they ask me create a new acct, restore the whole system.... finally they replaced it for me... but after couple of days using, just found this one is also not good.... dont know if they give a new one? or just the mighty mouse born w/ bugs....
    ok... here is my problem..
i really think to put two grey buttons on the two sides of the mouse is innovative and handy, but the problem is those two buttons just "too smart"... whenever I move the mouse, it's "Expose - all windows"... really annonying... right now I have to disable the functions for those 2 buttons.. I do have applecare, but just dont know if I can call apple to replace this one again? or maybe after the replacement, the same problem? Anyone met the same problem? Is this a general defect for mighty mouse? sigh...

I'm left-handed. Would you please pubish a photo to show how you use the mouse? I wanna know if I hold the mouse in a wrong way...
I'm right handed, Miky, but as the mouse is symetrical, I guess the idea is pretty similar.

  • I just got an iPad mini Smart Cover and it keeps locking my iPad

I Folded the Smart Cover to the back and sometimes it just looks itself like that. Why?

Obviously it shouldn't do this.  Either the Smart Cover is defective - or your iPad is too sensitive.   See last comment in the following similar discussion - Apple replaced the person's iPad.
My iPad Air smart cover is causing my screen to turn off when I flip it so that it lies across the back of my iPad

  • Defective X230 - what should I do now?

    Hello,
Two weeks ago I bought a new X230 from Germany's Lenovo online shop. It arrived on Thursday, and my initial experience is, to put it mildly, frustrating.
While customizing the system I chose the 3-year onsite next-business-day + accidental damage protection warranty - the most comprehensive one offered. I received an e-mail that I had to register my warranty, but the link to do so was incorrect and redirected to the main Lenovo page for the US. Thanks to this forum, I found the correct link (on ibm.com!) and registered my warranty on Friday. I received a confirmation e-mail that the warranty was now registered to that system. Today (Saturday), I tried the "Warranty Status Lookup" thing here: http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/product-service/warranty-status/default.page After I input my serial number and machine type and click Submit, the form just reloads empty. Ugh.
The laptop had several defects on arrival:
    1) On Thursday I immediately noticed that the hard drive was damaged - it wouldn't even pass the simple diagnostic test in the laptop's BIOS. I booted an Ubuntu LiveCD and it immediately complained about SMART errors. So the hard disk is DOA.
    2) An hour later the system hung pretty badly. I ran memtest and around the 40% mark, it started counting millions of errors. So the RAM is DOA too.
At this point I am confused as to what I need to do. On the Lenovo website, the "Support phone list" directs me to 0800-5004618 (8-18 Monday Friday). But it warned me that my device has to be in warranty for me to get support, so I decided to wait for my OS-NBD warranty to be registered before I called, and by the time the confirmation e-mail came back, it was already 18:30 on Friday. The e-mail with the (wrong) registration link mentions that I can call 0800 55 54 54 after registration, available 24/7. Guess what: "The number you have dialed is not correct. Please check the number and try again." Are you kidding me?!
    3) Just today (Saturday) I found a third defect. The "Premium HD" panel has a dead (black) pixel right in the center. Searching on this forum reveals the very troubling information that a single pixel may not be enough to consider the LCD faulty, which it is. This screen is not acceptable to me. So I wonder what their policy is for a screen that is "premium HD" (whatever that means) and that has accidental damage protection warranty.
After all of this, and if Lenovo would refuse to replace the screen, I would like to return the system to Lenovo and get a refund. Given that I received it on 8 Nov 2012, I should still be able to do so. Of course, I love Lenovo hardware and would much prefer that they simply replace the defective components.
Could someone please give me a hint what I should do now? And in particular, how could I initiate a return, if it should come to that?
    Thank you very much!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello again,
First of all thank you koyab for the quick reply! Let me describe how things went.
I called Lenovo and was told to write them an e-mail with all the registration data for the computer. I did that immediately but nothing happened for a week.
During that week I discovered that the RAM was not defective after all; rather it was installed incorrectly, and did not make good contact with the slot. I am glad the whole motherboard did not get shorted out! After I removed the RAM and installed it again, it worked perfectly.
I called again and was told that the guy responsible for my case had simply forgotten about it. I was asked again what the defects were (even though I had described them in my e-mail) and some kind of hardwre support ticket was opened. The support person asked me to send screenshots of all defects as proof, by e-mail. He gave me a link to some kind of Lenovo diagnostic utility (based on Debian) that I was expected to use to make the screenshots of.
I downloaded the utility, and even though I am an advanced Linux user and followed the (Linux-based) instructions to create a bootable USB very precisely, the resulting bootable USB would boot and immediately fail, unable to find some of its files. So instead I sent a screenshot of the BIOS-built-in Lenovo diagnostic screen. Nothing happened for another week.
I called a third time and described my problems again. I was asked whether I wanted the entire machine replaced, or just the defective parts (including the screen). I explained about the RAM and asked for a new LCD and a new hard drive. I was told that a technician would call me within 48 hours to come on-site and replace the screen, while a new hard drive would arrive by mail.
Three days later (>48 hours) I was finally contacted and two days after that a technician was here to replace my LCD and bring me the new hard drive too. The machine is perfect now. Finally!
    Conclusions:
    1) The hardware is great. Lenovo still makes the best high-end laptops, and is possibly the last manufacturer who still allows customizing hardware before purchase. (I only wish I could buy a X230 without Windows.)
    2) Quality control is very bad. Mine came with 3 defects, one due to obviously sloppy assembly, and out of the box would take a very long time to boot (due to the damaged hard drive). I expect better for 1700 EUR.
    3) Service is a mixed bag. On the one hand I am very happy that my screen was replaced without any issue. On the other hand I bought the "on-site next-business-day warranty with accidental damage protection", but resolving my dead-on-arrival issues took over 3 weeks, 3 phone calls, 2 detailed e-mail explanations, 4 screenshots, downloading and failing to run 1 obscure diagnostic utility, and considerable technical knowledge on my part. That is not next-business-day! I had another computer (also a ThinkPad) to use in the meantime, but not everyone is as patient as I am.
So there is a lot of room for improvement on the service side of things. Would I still recommend a ThinkPad to anyone else after this mess? Absolutely! But Lenovo must improve its service procedures to at least match the competition.

I just recently purchased a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM drive to put in my 1st Gen MacBook Pro. Ever since installing the drive, I've had random beach balls happen usually when there is a fair amount of disk I/O.
Thinking the drive was bad, I sent it back and got another one. I am still seeing the same frequent beach balls requiring a hard restart to get the system to be responsive again.
Checking the System Profiler, I see that the drive is failing SMART status. I also checked the kernel logs and am getting I/O errors on the drive at the point when the system beach balls.
I am pretty certain it isn't the drive. I'm at a loss for what to try next. Is this drive not compatible with my SATA interface. Any suggestions or comments?
Below are some of my pertinent machine information from System Profiler:

Below is the Serial-ATA information from the System Profiler:

I also ran this to check the current speed of the SATA interface since the drive is a SATA II drive with a 3.0gb/s burst.
    $ sudo ioreg -l | grep 'Interconnect"="SATA"'
    | | | | "Protocol Characteristics" = {"Physical Interconnect"="SATA","Physical Interconnect Location"="Internal/External"}
    | | | | "Protocol Characteristics" = {"Physical Interconnect"="SATA","AHCI Port Number"=0,"Physical Interconnect Location"="Internal","Port Speed"="1.5 Gigabit$
    | | | | "Protocol Characteristics" = {"Physical Interconnect"="SATA","Physical Interconnect Location"="Internal"}
The above shows that the interface is running at 1.5gb/s SATA I which is what I excepted on this system.
    Thanks!

Sounds like you have things well sorted out.
Despite that fact that you have had two consecutive HDDs with defects does not, necessarily, mean that all of those drive are defective. However, you are fortunate that you were able to get you money back. Seagate makes good drives, as does WD, and hopefully you have paid your dues and you will have no more incidents.
Do post back should you run into stuff and need to bounce ideas off someone else.
    Good luck.

I will certainly report back on my luck with Seagate.
You are correct that the failure of two consecutive drives does not mean the whole line is faulty. The drive I was replacing in the MacBook Pro was actually a Western Digital Scopio as well (just not a Blue or Black) and it has performed flawlessly. It's the drive I have reinstalled twice now while I waited for the replacement drive to be shipped.
Another interesting anecdote is that I searched the NewEgg customer comments for reports of SMART errors on the Western Digital Scorpio Black drive I had ordered and sure enough, there were quite a few postings where people had tried multiple times to get a good drive.
It's just one of those things that you start to question, especially with older hardware like I am using (1st Gen MacBook Pro) that maybe backwards compatible quirks between SATA 1 and SATA 2 are the real problem not the drive itself. I'm still not 100% convinced that the drives were the true culprit. Hard to say for sure.
Not to mention all the troubles I've been reading about with 3rd party drives and the recent 1.7 EFI update which has caused similar errors as to what I was seeing with these drives. The first drive I had didn't throw any SMART errors, or at least I didn't notice them.
I'm gonna order the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9320423AS 320GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s and see what happens. I'll report back my findings in another thread so that people who search for the Seagate drive will have a more related thread to read.

  • IPad 2 smart cover sleep/lock problems?

Been using my iPad for a good month now.  I'm loving it.  I have noticed that using the smart cover, you have to have the pass code on in order for the cover to put the device into sleep/wake.  When I have the passcode setting off, the smart cover aligned to device fine but does not give the audible click upon closing.  When passcode if off, I also notice a higher battery drain versus the lock code turned on and I hear the sound click.  Do I have a defective cover?  Suggestions??

Mine has worked fine.  What model do you have, the leather or the other?  I've read of others using screen protectors like Zagg absorbing some of the dye.  Of course considering the cost they are to produce ($12 is what I read for the leather) it doesn't surprise me some of the dye is coming out.  I have wiped my black leather down with high grade leather cleaner / oil and you can clearly see it on the rag.

  • 64-bit Smart View + Excel 2010 64-bit Issues - Help Please

    Hello everyone.
First, I am not an "IT guy" so please bare with me as I am not technical but need help.
I am running Windows 7 64-bit Professional and Excel 2010 64-bit. I installed Oracle Smart View for Office, Fusion Edition 64-bit as an add-in within Excel.
I have worked with our "Hyperion Admins" to connect to the right server so that my "private connections" are set correctly (hopefully that makes sense).
However, when I attempt to refresh my Smart View query I end-up retrieving no data. The "refresh" button under "Smart View" in Excel will proceed as a refresh is occurring but then not return data (I know this Smart View template works as I've used it many times on 32-bit Excel).
Our admins have informed me that I cannot use 64-bit Smart View because our "server" is on a 32-bit O/S (or something similar to that). To me, the logic doesn't make sense and I'm hoping that there is a solution the admins are not aware of.
Happy to answer any questions and appreciate any help.

We had a similar experience as JTF, HsGetValues would not work but the AdHoc function worked fine. I put in an SR with Oracle and they refereced the below document. We ended up having IT install 32 bit office on the machine along with 32 bit Smartview (11.1.2.2.300) and now it is working fine.
