Lightroom 3 making duplicate copies of recent imported photos by itself?

I use Lightroom 3 and recently it has started making multiple duplicates of recent imported (and exported) photos without me doing anything.... what happens is I import a batch of photos, make adjustments to them, export them... close lightroom.
Then when I reopen lightroom, the previous imported set of photos have all been duplicated and sometimes there is more than one copy of each photo.
Is there anything I can do to stop this? I'm pretty sure I didn't change any settings to make this happen.

Lightroom never does anything by itself. It only does what you tell it to do, either you tell it to do something specifically, or you tell it to do something accidentally.
Perhaps in the export dialog box, you have (accidentally) selected "Add to this Catalog"?

  • Can't open recently imported photos in LR3

I can't open any of the recently imported photos in LR3? When I pull them up from my external hardrive it tells me the photo is allready imported and wont let me do it again. I can open older photo's just not recent ones. Please help.

Sounds like you are trying to Import the photos. As you have found out, this doesn't work if you have previously imported the photos.
Normally, you import the photos via File->Import once per photo (and ONCE only), and thereafter, when you want to work with or view these photos, you do NOT do an Import, you go straight to those photos in the Library Module. In this respect, Lightroom is very different than other photo editors you may have used in the past.

  • Lightroom 5 is quite slow in importing photos

Lightroom 5 is quite slow in importing photos from a memory card connected to a reader using USB 3.0! After installing LR5, I didn't change any default settings. Interestingly, this wasn't found in beta testing. LR4 was what I call quick or snappy. Because of LR5's slow performance, I went back to LR4 after paying for the Cloud subscription.
With substantial difficulty and after some time passed, I eventually was able to speak to Support which offered no fix for this issue. I hope that it can be resolved soon.

Selecting the Import from below in Files does help speed up the start of the Import as mentioned in the thread you referred to but is still maybe three or so times slower than in LR4. At least it makes using LR5 more bearable.
    Thanks.

  • Recent imported photos cannot be edited nor will they show on slideshow. Help

I am running Iphoto 09 on Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.8 snow leopard recent imported photos in my album cannot be edited nor will they show on slideshow while others in the same album do. if I open the picture from slide show I get a screen displaying a white ! and the show displays a black screen until the next picture moves up. Older imported pictures in other albums play fine in slideshow and can be edited. Is there some hidden settings I need to change to allow me to edit these particular photos and use them in my slideshow?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I am just learning Lightroom 5. Noticed very recently that 'Photo is Missing' has come up against virtually all my files over all my folders/subfolders. That said, using Finder on my MAC I can see thumnails of ALL my images which sit within my Pictures Folder. Equallly on my back-up on the Mac's Time Machine all versions of same images are present. Any solutions?

It means that the photos have been moved or renamed or deleted outside of Lightroom. (Hint: don't do that)
To fix the problem, please follow these instructions:

  • Bug: Duplicates not detected when importing photos older than year 2001

If you import photos taken before 1st of January 2001 00:00:00, duplicates will not be detected even if you select the "Ignore duplicates" option on import. The files will be imported twice into the same location with a "-2" postfix added to their name.
    Technical details (to help developers):
To detect duplicates, Lightroom uses a so called import hash (AgLibraryFile.importHash in the database) that has the following form:
         <capture_time><original_filename><file_size>,
    where:
<capture_time> - interval in seconds between 1st Jan, 2001 00:00:00 and capture time recorded in Exif,
<original_filename> - name of source file before import,
<file_size> - file size in bytes.
The problem here is the <capture_time> part, since it gets negative for files older than 2001, since 1st Jan 2001 is sort of  considered the beginning of time (called "epoch" in computing). Lightroom seems to get confused on negative timestamps.

I will report this bug.  Thanks!

  • Lightroom 4.4 can no longer import photos from my iPod Touch 5

I've been importing photos from my iPod via USB without problems for over 6 months. In the last few days, importing from this device slowed down significantly. As of yesterday, the program freezes completely when I try to import (although it had worked earlier - albeit slowly - during that same session.)
    I've tried:
Restarting the program, computer, and iPod.
    Closing all other programs.
Removing all other external devices from the computer.
Uninstalling the computer's USB hubs and restarting.
Deleting all videos from the iPod's camera roll.
Reducing the size of the camera roll (down to 650 from about 800).
    Nothing has worked.
I'm still able to import fine from other sources (an external hard drive & a memory card).
Weirdly, I plugged in my husband's iPod Touch - which until then had never been used in Lightroom - and it also froze at import, so it seems to be a problem with the type of device rather than the device itself.
I'm running Windows 8 64-bit with 3.3 GHz Intel processor and 6 GB RAM.

I too had a problem. iTunes wouldn't sync any photos nor list my iPhoto Albums.
I created a second iPhoto library and then added some photos and created several albums to see if iTunes could see the new iPhoto library. It did see the new library. I then started to add photos to it. I finally found the offending files - 4 .avi files - that for some reason when added to the library caused iTunes to balk. I removed the files and all is well. I even have other .avi files in the original library and iTunes responds normally - just those 4 caused the problem.

  • How do I add recently imported photos to a calendar that I'm already working on?

I'm working on a calendar in iPhoto, and I originally used the previous years worth of photos.  I recently imported new photos into iPhoto, but I can't get them into the calendar I'm working on.  Any ideas?

Drag them from an event or album to the calendar under keepsakes in the source pane on the left

  • Missing recently imported photos

I recently imported some photos from my camera.  iPhoto said everything was imported and so I clicked on remove from camera.  Today I went to look at those pictures and I can't find them.  The worst part is that they are gone from my camera, suggestions?

1 - in the future never have iPhoto )or any computer program) delete your photos - import and properly disconnect - later ( I wait for at least one backup cycle) use the camera format command to erase and reformat the card
2 - are they in Last Import?  If they are then your event sort is probably set to manual - set it correctly - view menu ==> sort events
3 - otherwise you probably are going to need a data recovery program - media recover has proven to do a good job according to users here - http://freshcrop.com/

  • Recently imported photos not being filed in LightroomMasters Folder...

I'm a Mac user and a newbie to Lightroom having recently imported my Aperture Library to that application. Following the import from Aperture, a folder was created in my Pictures Folder called LightroomMasters and all the masters went into that folder in subfolders...year and date. I believe this is the correct default process. However, images I have imported since then have gone into the selected Collections OK but the later masters are not in Pictures/LightroomMasters, they have been put in dated folders but these are on the top level in Pictures. Hence looking at the content of my Pictures Folder I have dated folders (containing these later imports) and further down in Pictures I have the LightroomMasters Folder which has not been added to since the original Aperture import. I guess if I manually move these "outside" folders into the LightroomMasters folder, Lightroom Catalogue will then not be able to find them.  Am I missing something here? Any suggestions

You can manually move the folders from within LR. Simply drag and drop the folder to its new location. This will move the files on your drive.
If you move the folders with finder, you will have to tell LR where folder is now located. It will show a '?' on the folders it can not find. Right click a folder and select to update its location.
    NEVER do re-import!

  • Can iPhoto work in tandem with Bridge without making duplicate copies?

I recently purchased an iPad and want to move some photo collections on to it. I currently use Bridge to manage my collection of many thousands of images, but it obviously does not let me easily sync with any kind of i-device. I am hoping that iPhoto can behave in a manner similar to iTunes in that it can act solely as a database and point at the original image residing with the structure create by Bridge.
I do not want to keep two copies of the images, those in Bridge and another set in iPhoto. I see under advanced settings, there is an option under "importing" to copy items to iPhoto library. By unselecting this, will I achieve my goal of simply pointing at the original file?
I suppose I can dump Bridge altogether, and just use iPhoto, but I am not sure I am ready to that as of now.

    Yes -- and no
Yes you can reference the originals photos by unchecking that option
No - you will have problems
    - if you move the "original" iPhoto will lose access to it
    - if you edit the photo in iPhoto the edited version will be in iPhoto and Bridge will not know anything about it
    - if you every upgrade your hardware or replace it due to failure iPhoto will have problems

  • Lightroom library is almost 5gb after importing photos

I am new to Lightroom 5 and just imported about 4000 photographs.  I just added them to Lightroom since they were already on my hard drive.  I was amazed an confused why the Lightroom library file is almost 5 gb.  I have yet to do anything else except import.  I didn't think the library file would start to get large until I started processing and editing the files.  What can I do to not have my library file get so huge, or is this what I can expect with Lightroom?

Minimal means a thumbnail-sized preview, so anything larger than that would be recomputed at the time you first view the photo.  If you feel you'll be scrolling through all 4000 photos in Library Grid view at some point then compute Minimal previews.
I'd compute standard monitor-sized previews the first time you import a new folder of photos so you can do your tagging and flagging and rating and rejecting using the Fit or Fill zoom levels without waiting too long.  If you find yourself needing to zoom in to check focus on many of the images then maybe computer 1:1 previews for the newly imported folder, otherwise zooming into 1:1 will require a preview to be computed rather than looked up from the previews folder.
Once you go to Develop the previews aren't used except as a placeholder until the on-the-fly rendering has occurred as you zoom in or out or flip to the next image in Develop.
You'll figure out what you want to do after working on a few folders of images, the tradeoff between getting started on any of the photos in the folder vs waiting longer as you move to each one for the first time.

  • Why are my recent imported photos disappearing?

All of my photos imported in the last 2 months have disappeared from my iphotos events. Where have they gone, and is there any way to get them back? Once I import them they show up, but if I quit iphoto and reopen they are no longer there. We just recently sarted to use time machine to back up our system, though I think some of the missing photos predate the addition of time machine.
How can I stop this from happening and how can I recover month's worth of missing photos?

Have you checked the View ➙ Sort menu to make sure the Events are sorted as you expected and looked for the photos that way?
Or use the Search feature at the bottom and choose Date.
Then click on one of the last two months and see what you get:
If none of those find any photos continue with (assuming you're running iPhoto 9):  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Recently imported photos lost (?)

This afternoon, I imported 500 photos from my iPhone 5 into iPhoto ('11, v 9.4.2). After the photos were imported, iPhoto asked me if I wanted to keep the photos on my iPhone or delete them. I selected "delete" (which the program did). iPhoto subsequently crashed and now the photos aren't showing up in either place (on the phone or in iPhoto). I can locate the photos in my library but don't know the best way to get them into iPhoto. I tried repairing the iPhoto library but it didn't fix things. What's the best way to proceed?
    Thanks!

Well... I'm not sure what I did, but everything's fixed!
