Lightroom 4.3 import issues - hangs

Anybody got a clue why this behaves so badly??
Very consistent and very annoying bug....have about 20,000+ images on my laptop HD. Desire to use LR to catalog and organize, etc. On some folders import runs fine. On others it just hangs, with no error message, and does not 'crash' LR.....it just hangs and does nothing. I have waited for 30 minutes to see if it is just 'busy', but nothing. The progress bar also shows no progress, or stops half way and hangs. Upon searching the forums I see this is a consistent complaint about LR in general, but most of the other reported problems are with external media. My issue is with images spinning on the internal HD. I checked folders that 'hung' consistently and with my other program, ACDSee, it builds thumbnail pages and opens the images just fine. The metadata also appears normal (Nikon D80 and D7000 images mostly...NEF and JPG)
Win7 Pro, Lenovo laptop w/4GB memory. Help....or I'm getting my money back. This is ridiculous behavior for s/w this expensive, from a reputable company, for a simple function like opening an image and interrogating the metadata, etc....wasting my time, which is valuable.
UPDATE:
Just tried importing from an SD card. This does not work either. Images from a D7000. Initially the import screen showed thumbnails, but after creating a new directory in the target folder, the thumbnails would not display, and import simply hangs with no error or crash. When I cancel the import I get a message that says "no photos or videos were found to import" (and...yes...they were all selected)

Looks like I found the problem....VIDEO files are what causes the hanging upon import. ANY 'supported' video file (AVI, MOV, MP4, etc.) cause the import to gack. To test this I built a temp directory with a mix of JPG, DCR, NEF, TIF image files and WMV, MOV, AVI, MP4 video files. The WMV it simply ignores since it is not supported. If any of the supported file types are 'seen' the import preview thumbnails will not draw, and the import will hang. If you simply change the file extension on a video, then re-initiate the import, it imports all images OK, and ignores the unknown file type (i.e. it does not open the files and interrogate them if the extension is not known - the smart thing to do). I also checked the CODEC used in several of the video files and it is supported, so I dont think it is a CODEC issue. You would think if LR saw a file it did not understand, it would simply ignore it (e.g. a supported file extension with an unsupported CODEC inside). In my professional opinion this is a serious bug and needs to be addressed. I also installed the latest version of QuickTime and tried the test folder with just a single MOV video and it still hung. This is really stupid behavior.....I'm quite surprised that Adobe's QA team did not find this bug (file type smarts are pretty basic stuff....), so there must be something quite unique to my Windows box which has LR tied up in knots....
The final test was to cleanse my image folder tree of all videos, then import the entire tree of about 7000 images (about 20GB) in several hundred different folders. It chugged through the import without a problem (took ~10 min). This whole mess only killed several days of my time. I'll send Adobe the bill for my time.....

  • IPhoto 6 - Import issue, hangs at end

Folks, any help with this would be much appreciated.
I installed iLife 06 and all went well, other than the "recovered photos" issue which others have mentioned - no biggie as there were only 3.
But I have a problem now when importing from disc (HD or CD) - in that the import goes ahead, but freezes at the end. iPhoto doesn't freeze - you can look at folders / the library etc.. while the import process is hanging - and interestingly the library does include the photos within the import which has hung.
The import will hang for ages (hours, not seconds), and I can't stop it using the stop import button, nor can I quit iPhoto (hoping it will tidy up).
After 30mins+ of waiting, a couple of times, I've force-quit iPhoto. When opening again, the pics aren't in the library - but looking with the finder they do all exist in the originals folder, and the data folder.
A total rebuild of the library fails to include the pics.
Anyone else had this? I'm a pretty vanilla user - I haven't mucked about in my old iPhoto 5 library at all etc...
One related question - the following files are in my iPhoto Library - judging by their dates (I installed iLife on Jan 24) and names, are some old iPhoto 5 files?
    Feb 5 22:17 AlbumData.xml
    Jan 24 20:37 Albums
    Feb 5 19:04 Data
    Feb 5 22:20 Dir.data
    Jan 24 20:37 Library.data
    Jan 24 20:37 Library.iPhoto
    Feb 5 22:17 Library6.iPhoto

    Feb 5 22:20 ThumbJPGSegment.data
    Feb 5 22:17 iPhoto.ipspot
    Jan 24 21:15 iPhotoLock.data
    Any suggestions appreciated

    Jonathan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The albums folder is a carryover from the V4 days and is no longer useful. You can trash it. Albums are now identified and linked within the AlbumData.xml file with no aliases being used any more.
The Library6.temp is not normally in a library folder. It's probably left over from one of your forced quits and can be deleted.
How much free space do you have on your HD? Have you tried rebuilding the library? Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. I'd select the first three options.

  • Lightroom 5 auto import issues with nikon d90

Hoping someone can help answer my question - I am wondering if Lightroom 5 has any issues with the auto import or tethering feature using a Nikon d90? I was using Lightroom 2 and the auto import feature has no issues with my d90. After I installed Lightroom 5 (Cloud App) and ran it for the first time, the first thing I used was the tethering feature and it worked great for 4 shots. I turned my camera off and then back on again and LR would not recognize my camera any longer for tethering. What's strange is that it will detect it for "Importing from Device" option. So, I went to plan two which was to auto import and that wasn't working at all. I am at a loss. I have a shoot coming up this weekend and need for one of these options to work. Any help is appreciated!!!

I use a D90, but I have never tried tethered shooting with it. Other users might have some suggestions for you, but looking at the list of supported cameras for tethered shooting the D90 is not "officially" supported in Lightroom. So you're probably on your own to find solutions. I know this isn't a lot of help.

  • Lightroom 5 & lightroom iphone app import issues with iOS8

    hi guys,
recently i am having problems with importing iphone pics thru the lightroom app. for reasons i dont understand the images comes to lr in small resolution (640x852). if i work on the pic in the app- and save it to the camera roll the images in the app its full resolution. ideas?
Message was edited by: Ignacio Barrientos - updated title

You did not mention if it always were the same images that were not being synced in your original post.
    Hence the question.
Even though it might seem silly for you - those questions being answered can make us understand where the problem lies.
The problem can be that you have an app that shoots pictures that are causing the issue, etc.
Best way to help us and yourself would be:
letting us know if it always only happens to a specific set of images
if only specific set of images causes this - where did they come from, had they been edited somewhere else or where they untouched when you imported them to Lr mobile
be very specific in your posts, things like "if i work on the pic in the app- and save it to the camera roll the images in the app its full resolution. " Doesn't really help us to understand where you are seeing the full resolution image, leaving us to assumptions that can be wrong.
If your workaround is to edit the images that's good but it still doesn't solve your problem right?
What you can do is - next time you have this issue - go to the settings in Lr mobile (Lr icon inside the app) and once the settings are open, press the Lr icon again for a couple of seconds to get a diagnostics log.
Then send it to me privately, do not post here directly, and we can see if it lets us know whats going on.
    Thanks,
    Ignacio

  • Lightroom 4.4 import issues.

    Hi there.
I'm using Lightroom 4.4 on OSX 10.9.4. Things were working fine until about a week or two ago. When I received a message saying "The following files were not imported because they could not be read. (1)" I've never had this happen before. It continues to do so, repeatedly. It isn't the SD card, as I can drag and drop from the card still.
Hopefully someone had had this too.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Cheers,
Least helpful advice I have had in an age.
Even if you had felt completely bored by my question, you could have put a link to an answer, if it did, in fact, come up "several times a day".

  • Lightroom 4.3 Import Issue?

Not sure if this just happened lately with the 4.3 update or not but I have noticed strange import behavior that I could swear was not happening a short while ago...
I typically format my cards in camera except when I am testing things and doing a lot of shoot/import shoot/import in quick sequence. So... I was shooting some tests the other day and noticed that the "Do not import suspected duplicates" now has an issue.
Using the same memory card, imorting to the same folder, with nothing changed in LR and nothing deleted the already imported images are NOT greyed when I insert the memory card on subsequent imports. However - if I click on another import source and then back to the card the already imported images are then greyed out. In other words the do not import duplicates refuses to work when I first go into import but if I switch to another import source and then back it starts working.
I have messed around quite a bit and this seems to an issue no matter what I do. I have restarted LR, optimized my library, etc....
    Anyone else experiencing anything similar?
Running a new iMac 27 32G under mountain lion and the latest greatest LR...
    Thanks
    RB

There were some strange things during my install as well:
It removed the 4.2 shortcut from the desktop, some seconds later it told me that the installer can not remove the 4.2 shortcut from the desktop - what it just did . Further down the install, it did put the 4.2 shortcut back on the desktop and at the end added the 4.3 shortcut as well.

  • Import issue with Lightroom

I upgraded to LR5.2 2 weeks ago from 4.3. Install went fine, but I'm now having issues when importing my photos, Lightroom hangs partially through the import.  The only choice I have then is to force quit the program, which then freezes my computer.  Getting to be an invredibly frustrating exercise.
I have an iMac with OSX10.8.5 (Mountain Lion)
    Lightroom 5.2
Importing & converting CR2 files (5DMkIII) to DNG.
Images being imported to an external hard drive.
Nothing has changed in my workflow or software except for the installation of LR5.  I did read in some of the forums that there was import issues that appear to have been fixed with the latest release, however, whilst I DEFINTIELY have the latest release of LR5,  this is still occurring.  Any ideas? Another bug?
    Cheers
    Sarah

sure did. All permissions are admin & I'm it.  I haven't tried DL via image capture - LR4 gets me to the same end goal, tis just rather onerous to have to muck around with this twice.  Appreciate your taking the time on this

  • Lightroom 5 difficulties importing files from MC

    Hi Everybody,
saw some discussions already concerning this problem. Want to specify this issue nevertheless.
    PROBLEM:
When importing from memory card, Lightroom 5 previews turn up veeeery slowly. This is a known issue by Adobe, obviously being worked on. But even when I import from the folder tree (not directly from the mc folder at the top) the previews load quicker, but my importing issue remains.
The import takes very long, so generating the preview files. Sometimes Lr5 gets stucked completely and can't be shut down over the Win Task Manager. Theonly solution: shutting down the system the hard way, e.g. cutting off power and restart.
But even when I am patient and wait till everything is loaded, Lr5 remains slow afterwards on ALL functions, even in showing previews of older images.
Most of the time, Lr5 seems to corrupt the file library on the HD I am importing on. After shutting down the system (which takes an eternity also), Windows is 'reparing' the image HD after restart automatically.
Is this a known issue? Has it anything to do with the fact, that the images HD is NOT the OS-drive?
    Sys Info:
    OS:Win 8 Pro
    Mem Size: 24 GB
HD: WD 2 TB eSATA internal (brand new)
P.S. No dumb remarks about Win8. We all know 7 worked lots better and OSX anyway ....

  • Import process hangs indefinately on JPG and AVI files

    Hi,
I'm seeing a similar issue to some of the other posts.
My configuration is Windows 7 x64, 4GB RAM and a Core i7. All the photos I want imported have been moved to the C drive.
When I try to import a folder with a couple of sub-folders containing a total of about 3000 JPG and AVI files (from a CANON 450D and Fuji Finepix 200EX), the import process hangs inderfinately, and I need to kill the process.
Only around 500 photos get imported.
One strange thing is that I am only able to preview a couple of the files in the preview grid. However when selecting to view a single file instead of the grid view I am able to view the file in question.
I have tried to import one file at a time (for a couple of the ones that fail that is) but the import process still hangs, even though I am able to view the file itself before import.
Have also tried only JPG files, same result.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

What happens if you try to copy these files to your iMac first? Your problem may not be that applications quit when opening but rather you're having problems simply accessing the disk.
If your external disk was formatted as NTFS by your Windows machine then your Mac will not be able to write back to the disk. Your applications may be attempting to save temporary or permanent files back to the disk. Verify this by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Click the "More Info..." button. Under the Hardware section on the left, look for your drive. It's probably under ATA. Select your drive and look at the "File System". If it is formatted as NTFS, you can copy the files to your iMac, and use the Disk Utility to reformat the drive to a Mac or MS-DOS format.
This could also be a symptom of disk corruption. You can begin troubleshooting by using the Disk Utility found in /Applications/Utilities to verify/repair your disk. If Disk Utility finds problems but is unable to fix them, you can purchase third party tools such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to attempt to repair your disk.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Import issue

    Windows 7 Ultimate, Lightroom 3.2
My issue here is lightroom will not start when I connect my camera (EOS 1000D) to the PC.
I have checked the show import on card detection still nothing.  I have gone to control panel and in the 'autorun' control I notice that lightroom is an option for images and also mixed media, however it is not an option under devices and the camera.
Although both Bridge and the EOS utility are listed as options.
    Any clues?

You need to use a card reader, rather than connecting a camera, if you wish LR to auto start. To import via a camera you need to start LR and then select the card as a drive. Not really a good idea anyway, far better to read directly from cards rather than via a camera.

  • Lightroom 4.4 video issues, I think it may be a windows 8 issue.

I am not sure when this started happening or what has changed.  I went to import some video and in the import dialog box all my video files show "Preview unavailable for this file" in the thumbnail in the grid view.  And if I try to import them i get a dialog box with a message that says Import Results > Some import operations were not performed. > There is a problem with the video file (1) > [Filename].AVI
I am currently using windows 8 and I have imported video to this catalog before from the same camera.  The video plays fine in the video players(windows media player, quicktime, and the new video app on windows 8 that is the default player in the OS).
I went throught the http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/troubleshoot-video-issues-lightroo m-4.html and did all those suggestions.  I am now turning to the forums before I reach out to support.
Has anyone else run into this issue or a simililar one that may be able to give me a workaround or solution?
I am a cloud subscriber and all my programs are up to date.  Windows is current, all players are current, and this specific catalog has .AVI files in it from the same camera and the firmware on the camera has never been updated since I started shooting video.
    Thanks,
    Alex

I had the same problem -- also on Windows 8. I was trying to import .MOV files from an Olympus OM-D E-M5 into Lightroom and got the error you mentioned.
I believe it was a problem with my QuickTime installation. I was using an unofficial distribution of QuickTime called "QT Lite", and apparently it doesn't play well with Lightroom. Uninstalled that, installed the latest QuickTime and video imports started to work.
Unfortunately I then ran into this other problem, which sometimes causes video editing to fail: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/972420

When importing or synchronizing folders in Lightroom 4, the application becomes unresponsive and Windows reports it as not working.

    Workaround
The following items each prevented the issue from occuring.
Unplug phone (android - Samsung Galaxy SII) from USB port or
    Unlock phone.
My guess is that the Import... and Folder synchronization operations invokes Lightroom to scan all storage devices including USB attached devices. Lightroom seems to choke on connected devices that has an empty volume list.
Workaround #1: Unplugging the phone removes the device from the list. Lightroom only has to deal with C:\ and D:\ partitions which are hard disk drives.
Workaround #2: In my case, unlocking the phone will allow Windows to list available volumes on the device. Lightroom probably does not know how to handle scenarios involving connected devices that has empty volume sets. Some devices may need more interactions to allow Windows to list available volumes. For me, leaving the phone unplugged was an easier workaround.

    Investigation
To investigate the issue, I reproduced the issue using procmon.exe and filtered the trace to include events with Process Name = lightroom.exe.
Scanning the trace from most recent events to oldest, I noticed a RegQueryValue operation that resulted in NAME NOT FOUND. The detail that caught my eye was that the path included "SAMSUNG_ANDROID" which indicates Lightroom is doing something that involves my Samsung Galaxy SII phone that was connected via USB -- I don't know what and why.
As a wild trial-and-error test, I unplugged the phone. As a result, the issue could no longer be reproduced -- workaround #1.The second workaround was discovered after a few minutes of trial-and-error. I don't remember what my thought process was and am currently too lazy to type any more.
If this write-up helped you, awesome. If you have a similar issue but a different workaround, please share it!

    Great!
I had the same issue, that could be resolved by your suggestion.
Actually, I renamed the module wpdmanager.mox to kill it's activity.
Disadvantage of this is that you will not be able to import files from SD card, but I copy to HDD using explorer anyway.
I totaly agree with your conjecture.

  • Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error.

    OS 10.5.8
    (gb mem
I have recently exported a catalog from my main database (on a mac) with about 700 photos.  Including negative  files
We opened the catalog on a PC machine in the same version of lightroom. 3.5 camera raw 6.5.  The images were given new keywords and then exported as a Catalog  including Negative files.
The original catalog has been deleted from the main database on the Mac.
The  Catalog with the new keywords  saved across the network to the Mac.
Permissions are open to everyone on the folder the Catalog is in.
When I try and import the catalog in lightroom I can see the thumbnails,
However get this message. I’ve lost many hours trying to get the catalog bak into the main library.
I can open the catalog on its own in  Lightroom, just when I try and import the catalog  I get the bellow message.
I’ve tried importing saving to a new location
    Importing not moving the files
Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error.
I see others have had similar problems however do not see a clear answer.
    Has anybody a solution?
    Thanks Patrick

I'm having this issue as well, and honestly I've *never* been able to get "import from catalog" to work. In my case I have a catalog created on my Windows 7 laptop in LR3.5. I've copied it to an external drive, plugged it into my PC running Windows 7 with LR3.5. And I get the "could not import this catalog because of an unknown error" message.
I've confirmed every image in the catalog I am trying to import is accounted for and isn't "missing". There are no duplicate images between the exported catalog and the one I'm trying to import in.
    Thoughts?
