Limit smart album to a number of pictures ? like last 100 pictures...

Hi,
Using Aperture 3, is it possible to limit the amount of pictures that appear in a smart album ?
A bit like what you do with a smart playlist in iTunes.
So is it possible to create a smart album that says something like the last 100 pictures added, etc. ?
Thanks,
Keith.

Hi,
Yes, i know I can do this with a date.
But using something like 'in the last week' could return thousands of pictures if i'd just returned from a vacation for example, and then a week later, have zero pictures.
I'm just looking for a smart album that will be copied to my iPhone whenever I sync, with like the last 2000 pictures I took, and so that it always has 2000 pictures, even if there is nothing new recently.
Hope that makes more sense.
Thanks
Keith.

  • Smart album iLife different number of photo's

I've created a smart-album in Aperture. It shows e.g. 50 photo's. When i select this sam e smart-album in another iLife program or iTunes, then they show much more photo's. It seems that the filter doesn't work within other applictions.
    Aperture 3.2.3
    iTunes 10.6.1
    osX 10.7.3

You may have set an additional filter on your smart album, so that you get a filtered view of it in Aperture. Check the search field in the Browser, when your smart album is selected. It should display "All Items".
    For example:
In the Media Browser in Mail this smart album "Delos Selection" correctly displays 11 items.
In Aperture I only see 7 items, because the search field is set to 5* and the images with a lesser rating are suppressed by the filter.
So have a look at your search field, when your album is selected.

  • IPhoto smart albums as screensaver/ desktop

I have a smart album of all my skydiving pictures in iPhoto '08 which I want to use as a source for all my desktop and screensaver pics. The album appears in the desktop preferences, but not the screensaver prefs (problem 1), the desktop is set to change every minute but with over a thousand photos, it's definitely weighted to a small subset of those (problem 2)
Any guesses on how to get the screensaver running from the smart album?
Any reason why the 'random' selection from a 1000+ photos for my desktop keeps showing the same ones?

Let’s try and reset that sharing feature in iPhoto. TO do this we’ll need to move a file out of the Library and iPhoto will then be forced to re-create it.
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a file called AlbumData.xml
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Launch iPhoto.
Give it a few moments to regenerate the file.
    The Launch the SystemPreferences.

  • Smart Album with Only Favorite Pick of Stack Rather Than All Stack Picts

I am trying to create a smart albums where i would have only my favorite pictures. most of my pictures are in stacks and when i create an album with my favorites, i get every pictures of the stacks rather than the favorites.
do anyone knows a way to single out the favorite picture of the stack and have it in a (smart) album, without all the other pictures part of the same stack attached to it.
    thanks for your help

Sorry, edited (one sentence was incomplete):
... for each album, you can define an album-specific stack pick which is different from the "overall" stack pic.
    Let's say you have a project "client 1" with a stack containing images A, B, C, D. Let's make B the stack pick.
Now you can set up an album (or website, or book, or whatever) "client 1 my choice" and set image D to be the album pick. You can then set up another album "client 1 their choice" and set image C to be that album's album pick.
If you then view the album "client 1 my choice" you'll see image D. If you view the album "client 1 their choice", you'll get to see image C. If you view the project "client 1" in which your stack is residing, you'll see image B.
All this can be achieved without unstacking since the image (and stack) in the album is just a pointer to the original stack which resides in your project "client 1". I find this quite comfortable.
    Cheers,

  • Smart album bug?

    Hi....
I seem to have a reccuring bug in aperture.
lets say I take 20 photos right now, and import them into aperture.
If i create a smart album that filters on photos in the last week, these these photos exist in this smart album-
    No problem
If I change the logic so it picks up photos taken in the last 2 days, then nothing appears.
I have checked the exif of the photos (To make sure it reads correctly) and checked my system clock.
Has anyone else encountered such a problem?

I haven't seen this problem. I have smart albums that show the last day, last week etc and it has always worked for me.
What version of Aperture and OS are you running? Also keep in mind that the filter is based on time not date. That is a folder showing today is showing the previous 24 hours.

  • Empty smart album (Album is not any)

    Hello,
I have recently began to use iPhoto (it's late i know ;p) and I have a problem with a smart album feature.
Indeed, i have created albums,  and in order to know what are the remaining photo to classify, i use the "Album is not any" smart album!
At the begining it was working perfectly... but now the smart album is consistently empty, even when i do a fresh iPhone import.
I looked up on the discussions, but nobody seems to have this problem, so I guess i did something wrong...
Would you have any idea ?
    Thanks
    Jinme

I am seeing the same in iPhoto 9.5, Jinme.
Probably iPhoto is stuck, because of the logical impossibility to create a smart album of all photos not contained in a (smart) album. If the photo is in the smart album, it should not be there, because it is now in an album.  (just kidding, I know, that this smart rule only applies to regular albums, not smart albums).
As a work-around: If you create a similar smart album in Aperture - with the smart rule "Aperture Metadata > Album name is empty" and open the library in iPhoto, this smart album will work in iPhoto. Only you cannot edit in iPhoto, you have to do it in Aperture. But after adding the first smart album in Aperture, suddenly the iPhoto created smart album worked again. This looks like a bug to me.

  • Smart albums based on date images were last edited

Here's a quick question to throw out to the masses...
Is it possible to create smart albums based on the date images were last edited within Aperture?
If yes, then I can't seem to locate it! - Probably right in front of my nose!
If no, then I think it would be a really handy feature so you can easily keep track of any changes made to individual images throughout your whole library by the date they were last tampered with.
Any views, or pointers in the right direction?
    thanks
    Jason.

    Hi,
this is exactly what I am looking for too! I would like to extend the question to: Is there any way to find the date when a version was created or modified?
    Thanks for your help,
    Uwe

  • Is there a way to display the number of pictures or photos in a smart album

when I look at my project view on the left, all of the projects or folders show the number of photos that are in them at a glance. However, on my smart albums, it just shows the looking glass which you can click on to edit the properties. Is there any way for aperture to show the number of photos in a smart album without having to open the smart album and count? Thanks!

No. But when you click on them, the number of images they contain will be at the bottom of the Browser screen and in Split View just above the bar separating the Viewer from the thumbnails.

  • Can't set smart album pictures as desktop backgrounds.

i have imported 'without copying to library' a whole bunch of pics into iphoto and have created smart albums. now i went to 'change desktop background' by control clicking on the desktop and am selecting a pictures from one of the smart albums but its only displaying a blue background. this is true for all smart albums and normals ones as well. when i select an image from the other folders they work fine. what could be the reason?
the primary reason of importing stuff to iphoto was so that they are easily available across applications.

    simport
Do you know of any reason why the Desktop pref pane should not be able to use photos in a "referenced" iphoto library
It's just the nature of the beast.
but I just don't trust it enough to do what it will with my photos by having them stored in the iPhoto library.
    What are you afraid of?
When you import a pic into iPhoto in the default Managed mode all it does is make a byte by byte copy of the pic. Nothing else. It's an exact copy. It makes no alterations, adds nothing, removes nothing.
The pic is stored in the Finder. Yes, it's in a Unix Style Package file, but apart from all the ways to access your pics I'll describe in a moment, if you want to look inside the package you can do so at any time: Simply right click on the iPhoto Library and select 'Show Package Contents' from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open and you'll see the Library inside.
There are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner. (As your Library is referenced the files will be aliases rather than the actual files.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Running a referenced library has a number of pitfalls - apart from the fact that System Preferences cannot use the files.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Other information that may offer comfort:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
Mind you, I don't suggest that you change over in one go. I think the best thing to do is create a new Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library') and set it as a Managed Library. Import 50 or 100 pics an explore it, see how it works and see if that does anything for your confidence.

  • I shared more than 3000 pictures in icloud, but when I try to watch them in another device  I can only see 300. Is there a limit on the number of pictures I can share?

I shared more than 3000 pictures in icloud, but when I try to watch them in another device  I can only see 300. Is there a limit on the number of pictures I can share?

    Quick Answer: Yes.
If you are looking at My Photo Stream, check this out: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4486
How long are My Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud?
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
How many photos are stored in My Photo Stream on my devices and computers?
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos in the My Photo Stream album. From there, you can browse your recent photos or move the ones you like to your Camera Roll or another album to keep them on your device forever.
Because your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to have all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically downloaded. In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, select Photos (or Photo Stream) > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will be imported into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture. On your PC with My Photo Stream enabled in the Control Panel, all of your photos will be imported into C:\\Users\<user name>\Pictures\iCloud Photos\My Photo Stream. For iCloud Control Panel 2.0 to 2.1.2 users, the path isC:\\Users\<user name>\Pictures\Photo Stream\My Photo Stream .
If you are using a Shared Photo Stream, check this out:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5903 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5902
How many photos and videos can be stored in a shared stream?
A shared stream can hold a maximum of 5000 photos and videos combined. When you reach your limit, you must delete some photos or videos before adding new ones.
How long are iCloud Photo Sharing photos and videos stored in iCloud?
The photos and videos you share (and the comments or Likes associated with those photos) remain in iCloud until you or the contributor delete them manually, or until you delete the shared stream completely.

  • IMovie '11 does not show Smart album pictures

iMovie isn't showing the pictures in my smart albums. I don't know if anyone else is having this problem? Created and verified content in iPhoto. The smart album titles show up in iMovie but when I try to drill down into the pictures nothing happens; no photos. Shut everything down in case it had to do with file handles not being closed properly, restarted and still the same non-result.
    Any Suggestions?

Unfortunately, from reading the iMovie Discussion Board every day religiously this seems to happen. Somehow something clears up after having a big problem for a while. One thing to try is have iPhoto 'rebuild' its Library file by hold down Command key + Option key then launch iPhoto. This will bring up a dialog box with a number of options/check boxes. I don't know enough about each one to say which ones to check or uncheck. Possibly check all of them and let iPhoto run it's course until it finishes. You will have to wait a while if you have very large iPhoto library, but it might clear up this problem of importing photos from iPhoto especially after a OS X 10.7 Lion update.

  • Why do I find a duplicate export of a Smart Album in my Pictures folder every time I create a MobileMe Gallery Album from that Smart Album?

Using the last version of Aperture 2, I have noticed that every time I publish a Smart Album to my MobileMe Gallery, I find a duplicate of the album in a folder  with the same name as the Smart Album in my Pictures folder.  Why does that happen?  Can I prevent that?  If I can't prevent it, can I just send the folder to the trash without it having an effect on the Smart Album in Aperture or the MobileMe Album in my Gallery?

Select the album, Select all photos in the album, then click on the info button.   Number of photos and total size are on  top of info pane.

  • Smart Album help - pictures without Keywords

How can I create a Smart Album for pictures that don't have a Keyword attached to them? I'm trying to put Keywords to all my pictures and would like to be able to use a Smart Album to help me get through this project.
    Thanks.

Thanks. I had it on "contains" and there isn't a pulldown menu for that. Never even thought to change it to the other choices to see what that offered.

  • IPhoto 4.0.3 & smart album for desktop picture rotations

I am using iPhoto 4.0.3. I'm attempting to designate a specific album in System Preferences for my desktop pictures--and I'd like it to change on a set time frame. I can tell it to change pictures for all regular albums, but ANYTIME I try to designate a smart album, the "change picture every. . ." option grays out.
Does iPhoto or Mac OS X stop users from designating smart folders for some reason? I've checked and it's consistent. Every regular album retains the option to have the picture change on a recurring basis. Every smart album loses this option.

You wondered about how I have an album folder to select with smart folders.
If I try to find it through the finder, you're right, there is no actual folder--which I didn't realize.
However, if I go to System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver, there is a line that separates the Apple default options and the iPhoto albums. It's there that it shows all albums that you've set up--regular and smart versions.
I just never thought about the fact that their album icon for the smart folders wasn't pointing to an actual folder--just the data shortcuts to files.
    Thanks for the new info!

  • How do I create a smart album that contains all pictures with no keywords?

    Hi,
I have many pictures which currently don't have any keywords at all. Now I want to tag these pictures with keywords. How can I create a smart album for those pictures without any keywords? So that I can then work just on these pictures...
Note that I don't want to find pictures that don't have a specific keyword. I want to find all those pictures which have none keyword at all.
    Thanks,
    Rainer

Well, there's a way but it's not great...
Start with a smart album at whatever level you want to keyword everything under. Set to search where "rating is greater than or equal to unrated".
Select all images, and apply a keyword like "NeedsKeyword". Yes, even the one with keywords already.
Now change the smart folder - use the "+" menu on the upper right corner of the query box to add an "IPTC" search. In that row use the dropdown by IPTC to find "keywords", then set the one next to it to "is", then type "NeedsKeyword" (or whatever you used) into the text box. Now go up to the top of the query box and change the "Match" dropdown to be "all" instead of "Any".
What we've done here is find all images where the only keyword is "NeedsKeyword", all the ones you've done with keywords already will not appear.
Now, copy these images into an Album (not smart album) for tagging - this is because as soon as you tag an image it will vanish and you may wish to apply more than one tags).
After you are done tagging, you want to remove the tag - this is trickier than you might think, as you need to remove it from images tagged before in addition to the images in the Album you just made.
First, change your smart folder to once again find all images by unchecking the IPTC keyword search. Now you'll see all images - but you're not done yet! You cannot batch undo a keyword in a smart folder, even though you can batch add. Select all of the images and drag into the Album you were using to keyword. Inside an Album the keyword metadata inspector shows only common keywords, NeedsKeyword should be one of them - remove it and it will be gone, and all your images tagged. Now you can remove the Album and the Smart Album you created.
Harder than it needs to be, I'd say - I've submitted feedback you need some way to search for untagged images. Heck, it may already be in 1.1! Or Joe might know of an easier way that has eluded me.
    Good luck!
