Limiting Web Gallery Viewers

Under the settings for each Web Gallery, I see that you can limit the gallery to people who have the correct Name and Password. Can you only create one Name and Password for each Web Gallery? Or can you create multiple Names and Passwords for the same Web Gallery.
Let say I have a Web Gallery titled "See My Pictures" and I have two friends that I would like to share the gallery with. Does Aperture 2 limit you to only 1 Name/Password for each of my friend? Or can I create a separate Name/Password for each friend (thus creating 2 Name/Password combinations)?

hmmm... doesn't seem to be answered for me. I agree that you can select either Album viewable by: Everyone / Only me / user1 / user2 / usern / public... this does suggest i can't allow 2 or more users to access this (unless i give them all the same password.
Does anybody know how we can allow multiple users to access one gallery via password?
Cheers

  • Web Gallery Pages Contain Garbage if Referencing External Scripts

Like many, I've been customizing the very limited web gallery templates that ship with Aperture, but in addition the many annoyances mentioned elswhere (generation of non-compliant HTML, deletion of certain content, reformatting, altering the DOCTYPE, etc.) I've encountered a serious problem that makes rich customization a chore.
Adding a script tag that references the Google Maps API causes Aperture to generate garbage in certain web gallery pages containing the tag.
    Placing
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?file=api&v=2&key=ANYKEY"></script>
into the HEAD element (with any api key, including an invalid one) causes the element to be replaced with
    <SCRIPT type="text/javascript" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?file=api&v=2&key=ANYKEY"></SCRIPT><SCRIPT src="http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/maps2.70a.api.js" type="text/javascript"></SCRIPT><STYLE type="text/css" media="screen">.gmnoscreen{display:none}</STYLE><STYLE type="text/css" media="print">.gmnoprint{display:none}</STYLE>
in most pages, and causes all of the second detail page (that's right, only the second page!) to be replaced with
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <HTML><HEAD><STYLE type="text/css" media="screen">.gmnoscreen{display:none}</STYLE><STYLE type="text/css" media="print">.gmnoprint{display:none}</STYLE><STYLE type="text/css" media="screen">.gmnoscreen{display:none}</STYLE><STYLE type="text/css" media="print">.gmnoprint{display:none}</STYLE><STYLE type="text/css" media="screen">.gmnoscreen{display:none}</STYLE><STYLE type="text/css" media="print">.gmnoprint{display:none}</STYLE></HEAD></HTML>
which results in a blank page.
The styles gmnoscreen and gmnoprint come from Google, so apparently, the code that generates the web pages from the template actually reads the Google Map API file, triggering side effects that write into (and spoil) the page being generated.
Sadly, I've found no clever workaround for this bug. Aperture strips out SSIs (along with all HTML comments) so conditioning inclusion of the script tag on being on the server won't work, and substituting a page (that's only) on the server that redirects to the Google URL fails (probably because of some limitation of the Google API). The only workaround I've found is to generate pages with a place holder for the bug-triggering script (actually just the src attribute will do) that is then replaced in the files generated on the server (which is easy enough to do with BBEdit).
Note that inclusion of the offending script also causes some misbehavior in Aperture itself when previewing the pages.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Any suggestions on a better way to prevent the script tag from being read by Aperture when it generates the pages?
This would seem to be a frank bug in the Aperture web gallery page generation code, which should simply be copying all script tags to the server files unchanged -- certainly without traversing the src url and thus executing any code they contain.

It's hard to imagine what the designers intended then. No interactive web pages? Almost any code included in or referenced by the templates can result in serious and hard to detect bugs.
For example if I have an element containing
    ... id="someid" class="styleA"...and have
document.getElementById('someid').className='styleB';somewhere in code that executes on load, then the Aperture-generated files will change the element to read
    ... id="someid" class="styleB"...
This is clearly a bug that needs to be fixed. The underlying model of what Aperture is doing certainly is not meant to include execution of code in page templates as part of he page generation process. Such code is only intended to run when the page is built in the client's browser.
I also don't buy the notion that this isn't really such a big problem since one can always use the features of a code editor like BBEdit to repair the problem in generated pages on the server. Such problems (as the above example illustrates) can be very hard to detect in the first place, and, more importantly that can't possibly be the model of "workflow" that Apple intends, since it means that every time I make photo related changes in Aperture (e.g. simply rearranging the photos in my gallery, or changing a caption) I have to run a development tool to fix the damage that such an update will do to the code in the generated web pages. They're hardly "templates" if their products need to be fixed every time they're used.

  • CS4 Web Gallery Limitations?

    Hi,
I just tried building a web gallery using Bridge and, guess what, it seems to be limited to 10 images. I seem to remember a similar limitation in the 'test' version but I was sure they would fix it before the product went live. If somebody knows a way to get around the limit please let me know. Running Windows,Vista, CS4 Photoshop.
    Thanks,
    J.

so let me get this straight...Adobe's flagship product Ps, is now second fiddle to Lightroom in web capability?
It always great to buy an upgrade and discover it offers less, thank you CS4 lead at Adobe!!!!

  • Lightroom Flash Web Gallery Size limitations

I just created a flash web gallery with about 250 images and I can view it fine when open the webpage locally from my computer. But when I upload the folders to my server, the images are taking forever to load, if they even finish loading.
Is this expected? I'm using "large" thumbnail and preview sizes with Quality set to 70.

  • Web gallery or slideshow, non-Flash, for mobile devices needed

    Hi,
My website -- www.johnblaustein.com -- is all Flash and I'm getting some mild complaints from viewers who would like to see my work on an iPad or iPhone.  I built my galleries with SlideShowPro and I know Todd at SSP is working on a mobile device solution.  In the meantime, however, I'm wondering if anyone here has some solutions they might share.  The iPhone screen is so small that I find thumbnails to be just about useless and navigation difficult.  I'm wondering if there is a Lr solution that will produce a web gallery or slideshow that will run full-screen on a mobile device with a simple next and previous button.  I'm even thinking I might just do a limited portfolio as a video file with no navigation at all.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you.
    John

    John,
Unless I go for mobile support, I am doing just fine as-is with SSP/LR.  I understand the benefits of Director, but at this point I don't have the energy to learn yet another application... unless I really need to.  I trust you that learning Director won't be as complicated as I am imagining, but at the moment "it ain't broke, so I don't want to fix it."
I do all my site work myself with Lightroom, SSP and Dreamweaver, so I agree that I could probably get up and running with Director fairly easily.  The time will come no doubt.
Thanks again for all of your comments.
I was hoping that others might chime in here with other suggestions on making mobile device web galleries, but maybe there just aren't any good ones.

  • Is there a way to create a web gallery from Bridge with just 1 row and 3 columns?

It looks like I can't select a number lower than 3. I'm hoping there may be a way around this?

I'm hoping there may be a way around this?
Web gallery in bridge is very limited, the templates showing are the ones you have to work with, if you can't adjust them further then they show then that is your limit I'm afraid.
But maybe you can try the filmstrip  templates?

  • A workaround for Aperture users to use .Mac Web Gallery

As a user who recently switched to Aperture - I was hugely disappointed seeing some amazing new photo-related features in iLife '08 not available for Aperture users. Let alone the cash for purchasing software suites, I can't convince myself switching back to iPhoto for a single feature. So I googled and searched around...
Some pre-requisite for the workaround: You must have iLife '08, Aperture and .Mac installed.
    _*Solution 1*_
Create an album in Aperture that contains the images you want to upload to your .Mac Web Gallery. In iPhoto '08, create an empty library, then File > Show Aperture Library, choose the album and import images from there.
The downside of this is the images are your Versions in preview quality.
    _*Solution 2*_
Export Versions from Aperture and import the images to iPhoto and perform the upload.
    _*Solution 3*_
For users building websites in iWeb, I have seen threads that one could use the media browser in iLife suite to perform similar result but it also limits to the preview quality of Aperture.
I would have to say even the workaround is hugely disappointed but I can't see any other solutions at the moment. I couldn't recall my last ocassion on having such disappointment for Apple's software development.

Apple really needs to rev. Aperture so it sends photos directly to the new .Mac Web Galleries.
    Everyone needs to go here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
And voice there opinion there to get this added to Aperture.
    Thanks, Scott K.

  • How to get rid of the large slideshow images in Web gallery (CS4)

    Here is the deal.
I've created a flash web gallery/ But the new CS4 has the option for slideshow with this flash stuff. CS3 use to create thumbnail and large images folders. The new one creates 3 folders: 1. thumbnails, 2, medium images, 3 large images (for the slideshow). That's great, until I go to upload process. I have pretty limited space. So I'm ready to get rid of the slideshow option, but there's no such option in gallery creating process. The only solution I have in mind is to redirect slideshow images to the medium size folder. But thats pretty annoying process during the creation of each gallery.
So does anyone has an idea how to skip the slideshow creation or another method to skip creating 3 folders, all with the same images?

    Extend DefaultListCellRenderer, not BasicComboboxRenderer. Here's an example that wraps the original renderer and uses it where possible (i.e. instanceof JLabel). No 'white square'.import java.awt.BorderLayout;
    import java.awt.Component;
    import java.text.DecimalFormat;
    import javax.swing.*;

      private ListCellRenderer defaultRenderer;
      private static final DecimalFormat FORMAT = new DecimalFormat("#.00");

  • Setting a password at the web gallery level

    Hi,
I would like to host multiple password-protected albums in my web gallery but don't want to require my viewers to enter a password for each album they visit. Is there some way I can set password protection at the web gallery level and make all albums accessible to those who successfully authenticate?
    thank you!

No, not with iPhoto. That can be done with iWeb. You password protect a single site and can have multiple photo pages, i.e. slideshows, in that site. The just provide the URL to the site along with the password and user name to use.
It's so easy to create the photo page/slideshow in iWeb by dragging the album of the photos you want to use into the iWeb photo page like this.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to improve AP2.0 Web Gallery Quality/Functionality for photographers

    Hi,
    I'm a pro photographer.
I thought AP2.0 plus a (dot)mac account would offer an easy way for my clients to proof images in password protected web galleries and to download images as well. The resulting functionality is poor in my opinion. Is there anything I can do within Aperture or (dot)mac to improve the following problems?
    1) Why is the image quality of the web gallery slide show so poor? No sensible client would accept looking at proof images of this low quality. Even flickr is better.
    2) Why is there only one download file size, i.e. the original size? In other words, the original file is almost always too large for most web client purchases. Why can't the client choose a smaller version. Even flickr is better, offering several download sizes all based on the original upload.
    3) Since the export functionality within Aperture allows for numerous choices of dpi and pixel ratio to export images, why is this same functionality not there for publishing web galleries?
It seems obvious that photographers would want to publish web galleries with exactly the same control that we can export images to disk or flickr. Even within the Apple Mail application we have choices of quality and pixel dimension for the attachments.
What am I missing? Please help.

When you create a Web Gallery in AP2, there is a set up prefernce to let viewers download an Optimized, Actual Size or Optimized and Master Image. (You can only pick one per gallery it seems.)
However, I think the gallery design is rather clunky, too many design options are left open to the viewer, and not the photgrapher. I prefer the web pages and web journals for customer proofing using the image number. They email me their choices, and then using Aperture, I can order prints based on their selection. Not the simplist way, but I would not want clients downloading my images, anyway, as you suggest. Why would they buy a print if they can just download a jpg themselves?

  • A few Web Gallery Questions

    1) I have an Event with 49 photos I'm trying to upload to the Web Gallery. It seems it will upload only one & then stop. I see nothing that says pending or indicates it's still uploading. I've tried a few times with the same results
    2) The one picture it does upload, uploads at the same high res quality in the event. Is there a simple way to upload resized pictures like 800x600. Especially if I'm not concerned with viewers downloading for reprint

Do you mind posting up what your solution was? I'm curious.

  • Web gallery: Multiple pages depending on browser

I'm using iPhoto to post a stand alone gallery of 62 pictures for a client to review my photos. I've noticed depending on the web browser, the gallery might divide up my pictures over several pages--which can be confusing with the tiny buttons to move between pages.
Is there any way to force all pictures in a gallery to show on one page? That would be a much better experience in this case. Also, can you edit the settings of a gallery after it has been posted (Aperture 2.0 does this now)? Thanks! --Jeff
Example of Web Gallery with 62 photos:
*Safari 3: All 62 on one page
*Firefox 2: 62 pictures divided over 2 pages
    *Explorer 6: divided over 3 pages (25/25/12)

Is there any way to force all pictures in a gallery to show on one page
No - web galleries are a consume level feature and you have limited control of the display - to make suggestions to Apple re improvements iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
Also, can you edit the settings of a gallery after it has been posted
Yes - in iPhoto select the web gallery and click on the gear icon in the toolbar - a setting window comes up that gives you access to the limited setting that you control

  • Hide Email in Web Gallery

    Hi,
I created a web gallery with feedback in Photoshop Cs2 and uploaded into my webpage using Dreamweaver cs3.  What I want is a way (code, script) to hide private email address on the form from viewers but still allow to be emailed.  How do you do this?
    Thanks

    Hi Becky,
I think the best solution is a contact form. Your email address will never be displayed to the public, but the server side script will enable your visitors to contact you. If you are not very familiar with php you may want to have a look at this great tutorial which offers the solution out of the box.

  • Playing movies in web gallery

When playing a movie in web gallery I have to wait until the line below the movie slowly crosses to the following side. It is as though the movie is being downloaded before you can play it through. Is this normal, or am I missing out a step before clicking on the play icon?

This depends on the size of your movie file and the speed of your internet connection.
You can either cut the size of the movie file or give your viewers a description of the move to read while it downloads. The latter also gives the Google spiders something to report about your web page as they can't watch the movie!

  • XSL, XML, and Metadata Names in Web Gallery Templates

I don't know exactly how to ask the question, but what I want to do is customize the information that appears below a full-size image in an HTML web gallery. For the existing HTML gallery templates, this is the area where "caption" data is placed. You can display just about anything you want there, but you are essentially limited to a single line with no ability to format spacing. I would like to be able to show mutiple lines and format the way I want, which would be pretty easy in HTML.
I have created a custom web gallery, and I have learned where in the transformer.xslt file the caption information is placed. However, I do not know what the metadata field names are, or more importantly how to place them in HTML. Does anyone here know enough about XSL to give me hand? Any kind of direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Try John Nack's blog
there was some initial info there.
