Linking to a Word doc

I am trying to create a link to open a Word document from my
FlashHelp file. I am using Insert Hyperlink, selecting 'File' in
'Link To' and then I select the doc to link to and 'Display in
frame:' 'New Window'. If I then select 'View Selected Item' from
the toolbar and select the link a dialog asks me to Open or Save
the doc. Selecting Open shows the doc in the preview window.
When I generate the help and select the link nothing happens
although right-clicking on the link and selecting the properties
shows the correct path to where the file is located. If I
right-click and select 'Save Target As' I can succesfsully save the
doc. So the link 'knows' where the file is (in the 'SSL!/FlashHelp'
folder) so why can't it open it? I'm using X5.0.2 build 801, IE6
and Flash Player 8. I've tried amending my secrity settings in
Flash Player and IE. I have previously used the same method to link
to HTM files that open SWF files created by Captivate with no
problems.

Hi robosteve and welcome to our community
If memory serves me correctly, the issue is with something
called the "Mark of the Web", otherwise known as MOTW. I think this
impairs linking. You might be able to work past it by creating a
totally new page that doesn't have MOTW, then causing that page to
redirect to the desired document file. I used to use this technique
all the time when I was an Intranet Web Developer. I discovered a
nice side effect of this approach. I found that even on a fast
intranet, it took much longer than I liked for Word documents and
PDF content to open. So I would regularly link to them in this
manner. This is because I could redirect and while the user waited,
I could plop a message on the screen that told them the process
would take a moment and to be patient. Otherwise, with the old way,
they would constantly click repeatedly thinking the browser locked
up. When in reality, it was simply taking a longer time than I
liked for the document to display.
Cheers... Rick

• Creating a link to a word doc

I'm having trouble creating a link to a word doc on my computer.
I select "enable as hyperlink" and then "Link to file".
I select the the word doc on my computer. It didn't create a link to the file.
Hmmmm... then I tried it with a pdf. Still no link.
Do I need to have a pdf ? The document was created with microsoft word.
However I also tried it with an old Adobe pdf file.. still no go.
Any thoughts? I'm using an old version of iWeb 1.1.2
Thanks.

No.

That should work too.
NOTE: Links to files aren't testable within iWeb — they become active when published and viewed in a browser.
An alternative approach is to post MS Word docs (or PDFs) to the free Posterous where they'll be automatically presented in a convenient viewer, e.g.
http://dont-panic.posterous.com/pdf-document-example
...Then in iWeb set up a simple text or image hyperlink to that particular Posterous blog entry.

Hi There:  I am having a problem where pdf files on the web (i.e., links in a Word doc) open after an extended time and only as gobbldygook ( a file containing a series of characters and letters that make no sense).  This also happens for another Mac user coworker in my office, while the PCs don't have this problem...  Any help/suggestions for a fix would be most appreciated!

Just adding more info - MacBookPro running 10.5.8 and using Safari as the browser.  The problem comes and goes - sometimes the linked Word files will open OK, n others its just a strring of crazy characters...

• Link to a Word doc in a PDF is not opening the doc in Internet Exlorer 8

I have a PDF created in Acrobat 9 Pro, I have given a link to a word doc. The PDF and link is working perfectly on browsers other than Internet Explorer 8.
In IE-8 Even if allow to open the doc when prompted, nothing happens.
How can I fix this?

Dropbox has a convenient feature to preview DOC files as PDFs in Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. It's convenient but can lead to this problem that you end up downloading the document as a PDF instead of a DOC file.
As long as the recipient uses the Download button on Dropbox's toolbar above the viewer (see attached screen shot comparison), the recipient should get the original format instead of the preview.
Is that the issue?

• Preserving HTML links when converting Word docs

I created a document in MS Word for Mac 2011 (ver 14.5.2)
When I used Adobe Pro 11 to convert the document into pdf format, all the HTML links are lost.
I have tried converting from MS Word, opening the word version with Adobe Pro, printing from MS Word to pdf.  Nothing works. Even opened the MS Word document using Apple's Pages software, re-formatted and then converted to pdf.  Still no live links.
Best work around so far is to convert and then use the edit feature in Adobe Pro to re-insert the HTML links as invisible rectangles on top of the still-blue-and- underlined text.  So to the user it looks like the html links are still live, but what a pain for editor.
I have seen this issue raised in other posts, but none of the answers seem to work. And the work around described above is clearly less than ideal.
Very curious, as reading other posts, the issue apparently does not arise when the word doc converted from a Wintel computer.  But I can't imagine Adobe writes software one way for Intel and another for Mac.

Imagine it. this has been 15 year fued between Microsoft and Adobe.  Adobe Claims that Mac office doesn't hav ethe proper hooks for URLs. Microsoft says the fault is with adobe.
Since a Word Created file will work when opened in the windows version  and saved as a PDF, the links work just fine. Just opening and not saving, but converted to Pdf does nothing to the actual Word File.
They had it fixed last year  in Acrobat X if your dropped the file on to Acroabt directly. But broke it again with the upgrade to XI.
IF you have iWork and Open the word file in Pages then exported as a Word.docx file then create The PDF the links will become active.  Also if you Open in OpenOffice and export as docx file the resulting PDF when open in Word and PDF is Created the links will become active.
If you have neither you will have to open the PDF and add the links. Note the Links will be hot (active) but the links will not turn Blue and  be Underlined
Mac Office2011 is a Conversion of Office2010/2007 code.  So there should be no pproblem.
Also Don't use the Save As . . .  PDF Method. Instead go to Print Menu  click on PDF wait for context menu > the choos Adobe Quality PDF or Adobe PDF (uses Adobe's PDF engine).
wait for next screen that shows qualtity leave as sent unles you need specific job options. click okay then next screen File name. Rename as necessary the browser to desired to location then click save.  Or you can drop the saved Word document (with Word quit.) on to Acrobat and after a minute or so the PDF will be created. (Using this method in AcrobatX would actully show URL s or Mailtos as active - They broke this in Acrobat XI PDF still can be created but hot links no longer work).
Well it seems it does work on occasion  see: http://www.screencast.com/t/cib2kcYG

• Clicking a link to a Word doc and it tries to open it with Adobe Acrobat

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4 on my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine. I have Microsoft Office 2007 and Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3 and Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) installed. I clicked on a link to a MS Word doc and I got a dialog box asking what I wanted to open it with. The default option is Adobe Acrobat 9.4.3, which, of course fails with an error message saying it is not a supported file type. I looked at the other options and Microsoft Word is not among them.

Save the Word document. Create your email in your normal mail application (Mail?), click on the add attachment icon (the paperclip if you are using Mail). Navigate to where you saved the Word file and select it. It should now appear as an attachment in your email. If you are sending it to a PC user and you are using Mail make sure 'Send Windows-friendly attachments' is selected in the edit menu. And if you don't want the attachment to display inline within the body of the email Control+Click on it and select 'view as icon'.

• Creating Links From Converted Word docs

i converted a Word docx document to HTML that is comprised of a set of docs that are linked together.
Consequently each section in the complete doc, (except the Title and Table of contents), actually becomes a modifiable JPG text box.
I have been trying to create links from the Table of Contents to the individual sections.
I have tried everything but I am missing some concept.  It's one of those things if I just see it once I'll slap myself over head fro not fiquring it out.
Anyone have an answer for me

I hate to burst your bubble, but Word docs are not suitable for web pages.  My advice is to PDF your docx.

• New to PDF Portfolios - Need to Link between PDF, Word & Excel Docs

Hello All,
Thanks in advance for your help.  I'm new to the Adobe X Pro & making portfolios.  I have figured out how to create a portfolio.  My portfolio has a main pdf document and several folders with pdf, word & excel files in them.  What I’m trying to do is link from my main document (pdf file) to the other files (word, excel & pdf) that I’ve added to the portfolio.  I’ve tried linking to a pdf file and a thumbnail of the word doc (because I did find that I can’t link to the actual word or excel doc).  When I create & test the link (for both the pdf file & the thumbnail of the word doc) it is there; I can click the link I created and it will go to the word doc.  If I close the portfolio & reopen it the link to the pdf file is there, but the link to the word doc isn’t there anymore.  That link now goes to the main pdf file and not the word thumbnail or even the folder where the word doc is saved.  Any ideas on what to do?  Thanks.

As Dave has noted you can not do this.
Acrobat/Reader would need to know what program to use to read the data in the document and since there can be many different programs that could read your document,  Acrobat/Reader would need to know exactly which program to use on one's system. You might only have MS Office but others might have both MS Office and OpenOffice.org and might prefer to use OpenOffice.org unless there is a feature that is only available to MS Office. Yes it is possible to create a program that can be configured to use specific helper programs, but it can have a real impact on system efficiency. It is easy enough to download or extract the non-PDF document and then use your program of choice. Just look to MS Outlook for a program that can not always open an attachment, especially PDF files.

• Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 won't pick up links in Word doc ...

That's it really, in a nutshell.
My new Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 doesn't pick up the bookmarked and url links in my Word doc.
As it's new, I'm wondering if it's just a settings problem?
I'd be grateful for any help. I've been referred all over the place today with this problem - spoken to one Adobe type person after another, and none of them know the answer.
Thanks for listening anyway!

Yes, Geoff and Bill ...I had already done all that.
But it is picking up some links and not others ... breaking some in half even.
For instance, on the Word doc, I have the hyperlink 'National Health Service', but all Acrobat picks up is 'Health Service'. The link goes to right bookmark in the Glossary for National Health Service, but the description is incomplete, just 'Health Service'.
In another instance, I have a series of links to bookmarked items in the same Glossary, which are separated by commas, thus:
What can acutonics be used for?
Comparable to many other similar therapies, acutonics can be used as a general tool to aid the bodys spirit. It has also been used to treat a number of other ailments, very differing in type, such as: respiratory, gynaecological, musculo-skeletal, urogenital, gastrointestinal, emotional and psychological, in addition to many other chronic and debilitating conditions.
The words "gynaecological, musculo-skeletal, urogenital, gastrointestinal" are each individually hyperlinked to different parts of the Glossary. But Acrobat only recognises the two middle ones - musculo-skeletal, urogenital. And for the other two, even the word disappears, so you just have blank, musculo-skeletal, urogenital, blank. It does, however, manage to 'see' the commas.
I hope someone can help, because it doesn't make any kind of sense to me, and I'm at my wits end.

• Link to word doc in Mx7

We just moved up to MX7. I have some stagnant word documents
attached to my site. Now when people click the link to open them,
they get gooblygook before the text. Also all formatting (bold/etc)
is gone. Why is cf not just pulling this up to open? Can I not just
link to a word doc or do I have to convert it to a pdf/other
format?
Thanks,
J

We have no such problem with our links to word documents in

you provide some pieces of your code?
If you are just doing direct links, there should be no
trouble, ie.

• Need mailto: links in Word docs to open both *in Gmail* and *IN FIREFOX* how?

I have several "how to" documents at work that I've created to help make remembering the details of certain tasks easier. For several of these, I've got a mailto: link to some contact person which also has a subject line pre-filled with our account number so that I (or whoever uses the document) doesn't have to copy/paste all that stuff. So the link is in a WORD DOC not in a web page.
I keep two browsers open at work: Chrome, which is logged into my personal Gmail account, and Firefox, which is logged into my work email (which uses Gmail). It is critical that when I sent a work email (say, by clicking the mailto: link in the Word doc file) that it opens in FIREFOX so that it's coming from my work account.
What currently happens is that I right click the link and click "Open Hyperlink" and it launches a CHROME window, loads Gmail, and prefills the to: and subject: fields. *sigh*
I've set Firefox as my default browser through its settings. I also shut down Firefox entirely and followed the directions [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser#Force_Firefox_to_make_itself_the_default here] which say:
''If Firefox already thinks that it is default, exit Firefox completely, go to "Start Menu -> Run" and enter this into the text box:
'''firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser'''''
I've done both of those things, and it still opens the mailto: link in Chrome. Could someone please help me?

Well now I'm a bit miffed. Gmail was already set as the default Firefox mail client. Firefox is set as the default browser. But when I followed the directions here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20used%20by%20Firefox#w_windows-7-and-vista for how to set the mailto: protocol default program in Windows 7 it only offered me 4 programs to choose from, and no way to add a new one or choose something different. Google Chrome was the only one that was a web browser, so it's the only one I could use for Gmail (unless someone knows a way to set up something else to send gmail email from?)... how LAME!

• Linking word docs - updates in RH reflected in word doc?

RH8 HTML.
Hi all,
Quick question, I've been palying around with the word doc linking trying to see if its possible to link a generated word doc to my project, then have any changes made in my RH topics update into the Word doc without having to regenerate the entire word doc and do all the post processing again. I'm not looking to edit the word doc and have changes made in RH, but the other way round.
Is it possbile?
Thanks,
Nick

Quick answer - No.

• Linking multiple checkboxes to Word docs?

Hi - I've not used Dreamweaver or done any HTML for a few
years so I'm a little rusty. At work I've been asked to add some
functionality to our intranet, which is entirely written in HTML.
What I want to do is enable our users to select multiple Word
documents by giving them the option to select checkboxes, each
checkbox will link to a different Word document. Upon submitting
their selection the Word documents will open, or maybe give an
option to print too. Is it possible to do this in HTML using
Dreamweaver or would it need something like Javascript to provide
this functionality? My knowledge of Javascript is minimal to say
the least!
Any help appreciated.

You'll need some sort of scripting to process the form. Try
www.hotscripts.com and see if there's one already written.
After the form is submitted I would just show the user a list
of the
files which are links to the word docs. They can then choose
to open or
download the word docs. Wherever possible give the user the
choice.

How do I create jumps to other topics in a WebHelp proj that links to other word docs?

• CHM crashes when you click on links to PDFs/word on IE9 only

Here's the situation:
CHM file is created with a few links to baggage objects, which are PDF files. I have links in both topics and direct from the TOC.
On PCs with Internet Explorer 8 or less installed, users are able to click these links and the PDF file opens.
On PCs with Internet Explorer 9 installed, the CHM file crashes (and worse still, takes the application the help was launched from with it).
The error message is: Microsoft HTML Help Executable has stopped working [Close Program].
I have tried creating a small project with links to PDFs, and word docs, both as baggage files and just external links, and the same thing happens. I have tested on multiple PCs (even a Vista PC that was OK when it had IE8 and not OK when I upgraded it to IE). I am running the CHMs off my PC, not off network drives.
Has anyone else seen this? I would have thought other people would have noticed this if it was a generic problem with CHM files and IE9, but I can't see anyone mentioning it in this forum or anywhere else on google. Which makes me think it's something I've done wrong...
One last thing, I output the file as webhelp and the links worked fine.
Thanks in advance to anyone who has a suggestion here.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried that and not seen anything unusual on my PC, which is running windows 7.
I've since done the following on a Windows Vista PC, using my test help file with 1 link to a PDF and 1 link to a word doc.
- PC originally running IE8. Links open without problem.
- PC upgraded to IE9. Help file crashes when clicking the links.
- Removed IE9 from PC. Links working again. Ran MJs diagnostics.
- Upgraded to IE9 again. Links not working. Ran MJs diagnostics.
Diagnostics were identical when IE8 and IE9 were installed on the PC. So I don't think this is going to point out where the problem is. Unless someone can tell me what I'm looking for specifically. All the HTML help settings were correct.
I should also mention I'm on Robohelp 8.0.2.208.
Lastly, I tried setting open in new page for the links to PDFs and word. This time, on IE9, they didn't crash the program, but they came up with a "navigation to the webpage was cancelled" message in IE9. On IE8, the links looked like they were opening, but didn't open at all.
I'd really like to know if anyone else with IE9 has had problems with links to baggage files. If there's anyone with IE9, and perfectly behaving CHM files, I'd love to compare notes - i.e. how do you refer to them. My links just look like this: <p><a href="test.docx">test</a></p>
Is it something I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!
