Linksys BEFW11S4 Connection Issues

I have my laptop and my Xbox 360 currently hooked up to this router trough ethernet cables (yes I know it's a very old model, but it's all I have for the time being). I'm having issues with connection that I know is on the router end because the router I had before (that has now gone bad) connected fine, but this one has issues. Literally almost every hour on the dot, the connection goes out and will immediately come back on as soon as I simply unplug the router and plug it back in. Basically, I have to turn the router off and on every hour to continue to stay connected all day, every day. What's going on here?

Have you confirmed that the router has the latest firmware installed? You can check the Download section on this page.
You may want to try resetting to defaults, and reloading the configuration to try and resolve this problem.

• Cisco VPN 3.6.3b and BEFW11S4 v2 connection issue

I'm hoping someone can help with this problem.  I am able to connect to my employers VPN server, but cannot access any of the shared areas.  I've found some documentation that may point to an MTU issue, but adjusting the value on the laptop from 1400 down to 1250 to 1200 doesn't work.  I've tried forcing the value to 1250 using the Router Filter settings with no luck.  IPSEC pass through is enabled on the router as is MAC filtering.
I've tested the VPN while on-campus and I have no problems.  I also have no problems accessing the internet through the Linksys router with VPN turned off.
Any ideas?
Configuration:
DELL Precision M70 running  XP
Time Warner RoadRunner
Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem
Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 (using wireless connection) FW 1.45.10
Cisco VPN 3.6.3b

Ok thanks so much. I will try again.
My company's IT guys aren't  being very helpful, won't return my calls, emails, etc. and don't appear to be giving me clear instructions on what I believe to be a standard request.  Not sure why .
We can't get in as administrators, they have to do it for us, and they are not timely in requests like these.  We are a large company (over 10K employees) and the last time I tried this was with our email client and and Cisco VPN, bundled together. It was a disaster and I don't recommend it.  So this way was supposed to be easier for the user, and for them to help us with questions.  Oh well.
I will at least try what you have suggested, and when I get back to work I will see if I can get their public ip address, and see if they will check on the port.
I will post back to see if the suggestions from the above post worked.
Many thanks again for your help!

• Can't connect to my linksys befw11s4

i have an existing wireless router in place at home and all of a sudden one of my laptops can't connect to my linksys befw11s4 router. I can connect my other laptops and desktop with no problems. I have rebooted my router and cable modem several times to no avail. When I look at my connections on my dell inspiron 125 laptop, running vista home premium, it shows up as local access only. I have disconnected it and reconnected with no success. Any ideas?

Open the router setup page, click on the status page and note down the dns1 and dns2 no.On the laptop, assign the static dns under WAN and restart the computer...Now,check.

• Linksys E3000 – WiFi Connectivity Issue

I usually have the 2.5GHz (B/G + WEP) and the 5.0 GHz (Mixed + WPA2-PSK) networks running. I have about two to three iPhones running on the 2.5GHz, one Laptop on the 5.0GHz and one desktop wired. Recently in the previous week I came across wireless issues on the E3000 Linksys Router when arriving home from work. My iPhone wasn’t connecting to the Network or my Laptop. It seemed as if the SSID wasn’t broadcasting. I went into the router and played around with it and didn’t find any issues with my user settings.
The router seems to broadcast the SSID for 2.5 & 5.0 sometimes [it disappears frequently] and when I’m able to attempt to connect it my iPhones plus my Laptop say “Unable to connect to network”. I’m not even connected to it wirelessly to manage the network. The desktop that is wired is able to connect stream internet across the modem though the router, this also goes when I wire my laptop as well.
I’ve made sure I have the latest Firmware: 1.0.04 & I’ve manually reset the router to factory defaults and still had the same connectivity issues. I’ve disabled the 2.5GHz broadcast and ran the 5GHz to make sure the connections weren’t conflicting with each other, which isn’t the case.
It seems I’m having broadcasting problems with the router and even resetting to factory settings aren’t working. I’ve noticed it’s not my devices that aren’t experiencing the issues because the iPhones and Laptop are having the same connectivity issue. My router is mounted to the wall and my modem is working perfectly.
Edit: The lights that are on & solid, during this problem is the Power + Internet + Wifi + Desktop(2)

I realize this is an old thread, but curious as to whether the firmware upgrade helped. My problem is similar, but a few things in my configuration changed over the past 2 weeks:
1) I added a new Roku HD wireless to my router (2 days ago)
2) I upgraded my broadband modem to the Comcast Arris TG862. I had them put this modem in bridge mode so that I could continue to use my E3000. (2 weeks ago).
3) I noticed that comcast created an open network on my TG862 called xfinity wifi. I turned this off (yesterday).  Comcast does have an option for it.
Starting yesterday (after I turned off the comcast open network, I began to have problems on my 2.5 Ghz band on my linksys router. Never had these problems before. The network disappears, then re-appears. Somtimes I can connect to it but it's only a matter of time before it disappears again. 5 Ghz seems solid.
Last night, as a test, I turned my xfinity wifi open network back on, and all of a sudden my 2.5 Ghz was rock solid (at least for about 5 hours). It then disappeared again.
I will try the router firmware upgrade, but wondering if the Arris 862 could have anything to do with this. I'm not sure I trust comcast - particularly after they played that nasty open network trick on me.
Thanks!
2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use http://www.metageek.net/support/metageek-software-archives/ to find out. How many?
I prefer not to use Arris branded modems or modems with built in routers. I recommend that you check to see if you can get into a Motorola SB 6141 or similar modem model that is stand alone. Comcast support Motorola modems I believe.
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.
Thank you for the suggestions. Security is WPA2/PSK. This has not changed.
A few questions. With regard to your last paragraph, even if I got a bad data flow from the ISP modem, I would still expect my router to be visible (or am I mistaken). I think, in the past, I've completely turned off my ISP modem and I could still see my router - just had no internet connection.
I'll look for other wifi routers - it just seems so darn coincidental with turning off that xfinity open wifi. I've always noticed other wifi signals in the area, I didn't actually notice any new ones (other than that silly xfinity one).
One thing I did do, I did remove an AP I had connected to the router when I set up the Roku because it seemed like it was un-necessary once I switched to the Arris modem. I just disconnected it... should it be degrown or something?
Thanks!

• WRT400N connection issues with iPod Touch and MacBook

I'm a newbie, so please bear with me.
I recently upgraded to the WRT400N from a Linksys BEFW11S4.
Since the change, the connection to iPod Touches and MacBooks at the house have been shaky at best.  The connection frequently drops out completely on the iPod Touch even if it's right next to the router.
I've tried resetting the router, changing settings on the iTouch and MacBooks, but the problem persists. I don't want to mess with the router settings as I'm not experienced in that area.
Can anyone please help me?
Thank you.

You can try the below mentioned settings.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...
Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
This should fix the issue for you.

• WRT55AG- Wired Connectivity Issues

I have a BEFW11S4 that has worked great for at least 2 years now.  My setup is cable internet (from Comcast) to the router, with a wired connection to a desktop and a wireless connection to, at most, 2 laptops and an adapter I use to feed ehternet to my xbox 360.
A few months ago I purchased a WRT55AG, version 2.  With the initial firmware, I was able to replace the BEFW11S4 fairly easily, and seemed to be ok for a day or two.  Then I started having issues with internet connectivity (It was a while ago, but I believe the wireless network stayed up while internet was intermittent and/or disappeared completely to both wireless and wired devices.  I can't recall if the desktop was have local area connection issues, or just internet dropped.).  I put the BEFW11S4 back in and haven't had time to start testing again until recently.
Since I've tried to set up the WRT55AG again, I haven't been able to get an internet signal from my modem to the router.  Further, when I have my setup modem-->WRT55AG-->wired desktop, I get an error saying that my local area connection is down.  Modem-->BEFW11S4-->desktop gives me no such error.  Wireless network connectivity works (although it seems intermittent), so I have been able to wirelessly apply firmware upgraded v1.79.  I have tried every reset sequence possible between modem, router, and desktop.  I am not a network wiz by any stretch of the imagination- I tried to feel my way through some of the MAC address cloning using the wireless connection to the router, but I'm not sure that would help if I can't get a wired connection.
If I can't get the router to acknowlege a hard line coming in with internet, or my desktop to acknowledge the wire coming in from the router, I'm not sure what I can do.  Any advice?

Some more information- when I connect the WRT55AG to my Comcast (Motorola SB5100) modem, the 'Internet' light on the router does not respond.  The same when I connect via hardline to my functioning Linksys wireless-b router.
However when I connect via hardline it to my access point downstairs (a wireless Motorola adapter with an ethernet output), the internet light comes on solid for a few seconds and then blinks.
By the way, with everything I try, when I plug the router in, Power is a solid green and Wireless A and Wireless G lights blink green.  DMZ light is off, as are the port and internet indicators.
Any help would be appreciated.  Wireless seems to work fine but I can't get an internet signal in through the hardline.

• Constant disconnects with Linksys BEFW11S4/Westell/Bellsouth Ultra DSL

I recently upgraded to the 6mb DSL service from Bellsouth.  Previously I had the 3mb.  Anyways everything was fine for sometime even with the faster service.  The last few weeks I have been having constant disconnects(several a day).  Naturally the wireless lite on my Linksys BEFW11S4 goes out each time.  I then un-power the router then re-power and I'm off and running again.  I am using a westell modem.  Bellsouth tells me that its not them since i do have an internet coneection and referred me to Linksys.  After several live chats(due to disconnects and then having to start tellin my issue all over again) they had me upgrade my firmware. Well did that and problem hasn't changed.  I've played with the different router channels and they don't seem to help as well.  Bellsouth told me that I had a static ip, so I tied setting up router that way, but then i got no connection.  Unil reently everything was fine, this just started!   Any help is greatly appreicated.  My 17 yr old daughter is going through internet withdraws upstairs!

If you are on DSL using a Westell Modem; make sure you ask your ISP to bridge the Modem first and use the PPPoE fucntion on your router. Change the LAN IP of the router to something else like 192.168.2.1 so it won't get a conflict with the IP of the Westell. Then if you are on cable, you can try adjusting the MTU size to 1492, 1400, 1300, or 576 then check which value would get your connection stable. You can reset your router right after you upgrade it also, then reconfigure it again. Hopefully yell be fine after that!

• Connection issues with EA4500

I had bad connection issues with my mobile device, so i pressed reset on my EA4500 router, and now when i connect to my network, it gives my limited connection even though i have 5 bars of signal. Not sure what to do now...

Resetting the router will erase all the settings you configured on the router since the initial setup. You manually configure the router's wireless settings so your wireless devices can have internet access again.

• WRT300N connection issue similarities??

Hello everyone.
I just bought a 300N router as an upgrade from a linksys B router, before checking these forums and seeing all the issues that everyone else has with them with the wireless connection dropping out.
At the same time as the router purchase, I also upgraded my laptop to windows vista.
I was able to connect to my network with no problems at all. When I shut my computer down, and boot back up, it will not connect to my network, just gives me the "Diagnose?" screen. I am not able to connect to ANY of the networks within range (there are a few). I can try and try and try to reconnect to my network, but it will not connect. Then, if I leave it long enough, it will automatically connect to my network, and all is good.... Until I disconnect again.
Last night was the first time in the week that I had the router, that I actually got dropped from my router. And surprise, I was not able to reconnect to my network.
I also have a macbook, with OSX 10.4.8 on it. I NEVER have any connection problems with this laptop. Connects all the time, everytime, first try, and it stays rock solid connection, even when my vista machine is searching and failing to connect to my router.
I have the latest firmware from linksys, and I also tried tinkering with my radio settings as mentioned in a few other posts, but nothing changes in the connection experience. Even rebooting the router does not help. (Though it appeared to help the very first time I did it, but it may have been just that vista decided to smarten up and connect on its own)
So what I am wondering is how many other people, who are having connection issues with this router, are using windows vista? Anyone have any suggestions before I fire this laptop out the window?

well...as the router is working for the MAC computer..i don't think it is a router problem...rather i believe that it should be either the operating system itslef or teh wireless adapter on the laptop....

• Linksys befw11s4

I am trying to figure out if I can use an Airport Express (the $99 dollar thing) with my wireless Linksys befw11s4 to stream music from itunes in my Windows XP Pro laptop. I cant seem to find a strait answer on the web. I am not sure if it is becuase the Linksys rounter is old or what. itunes, linksys, and xp are all so popular someone must have figured out how to do this. I spoke to someone at the apple store who said it could be done but he did not know how. I am looking for some relitivly clear instructions.
Maybe I am searching for the wrong thing terms but cant seem to figure out it it is possible and how to do it with this set up. I dont know why it is not as easy as conecting the linksys router to the airport router with a cat5 cable and then the airport router to my stero.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do I need to log into my linksys router and do anything?
No
2)It only allows computers with listed MAC addresses.
OK, you will need to make a change. The best solution is to disable this feature since it offers no real security. If you don't want to do that, you must add the MAC address of the wireless interface of the AX to that list.
3)does not broadcast its name (i thnk this is called SSID).
This doesn't have to change. However you should be aware that this offers no security. The SSID is still broadcast between the base station and any connected clients. Therefore it only takes a few seconds to find the SSID and access your network.
Sometimes this option does cause problems with wireless connections.
If you want to secure your network, forget about hiding the SSID and MAC address filtering. Use WPA2 or WPA with a non-dictionary password... if your wireless devices support it.

• Linksys BEFW11S4 v4

Hi,
I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 that works just fine, or so I think. Currently there are 2 desktops and a PS3 connected to the router via cat-5. One desktop has Win Vista/Win 7 (both 32-bit Home) installed and the other desktop has XP Home. I recently got a Dell N5010 laptop with Win 7 Home 64-bit installed on it. I'm trying to set up the wireless network so I can use the laptop upstairs, but after setting up WEP and WPA, I can either NOT connect to the internet on the laptop, or when I do connect, the desktop with the dual OSes gets kicked off the internet, then the laptop disconnects, and I have to reset the router in order to get online with the desktop. I've searched everywhere for a solution. Everything is set to obtain an IP automatically, I've tried doing manual configuration, I've made sure firmware for the router is up-to-date, all network adapters have the latest drivers, I can use the laptop when it's wired to the router. The laptop has an Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN adapter installed. Drivers are the latest, status says it's working properly. Like I mentioned before, I can use the laptop and everything else wired to the router when security is disabled, but I, personally, do not want my network unsecure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I am able to connect without any problems when the network is unsecure. Setting the security to WEP worked. The last time I tried that, it kept saying Limited Access, so that was probably user error and me not putting the code in correctly. Firmware version is 1.52.03. There aren't any other wireless devices on the network since the PS3 is connected to the internet via a cat-5 cable.
Is it safe to use WEP instead of WPA?

• Mountain Lion wifi WEP security connection issues

After installing Mountain Lion I experienced connection issues with my linksys router when waking from sleep. After trying numerous recommended fixes that would only work for a short period of time I have come across a fix that resolved all issues.
1. Login to your router and changed from WEP to WAP security settings.
2. In network preferences>advanced; delete the previous WEP network from your preferred networks.
3. Open Keychain Access (spotlight search) and delete the Airport network password from both login and system.
4. Search for new wifi networks and select the new WAP connection to your router.
This has completely resolved my issue and forced my lazy self to upgrade from the outdated WEP secutiry protocol to WAP.
Hope this helps anybody experiencing this issue.

I think you mean WPA, i.e. WPA2 (personal) for best security, compatibility and performance (or is Linksys different?)
