Linux magazines

I am looking for a decent Linux magazine to subscribe to. Since I have a Master in Computer Science, it should not aim for a newbie audiance, but I do not want to get a headache when reading either   It must be fun to read but informative for advanced users. So:
- Information about what moves in the Linux community (kernel stuff etc.)
- Information about applications and interesting new techniques
- Not too much pages on hardware, I just like to call it 'the stuff inside' and do not like reading reviews of CPUs and motherboards
- Fun: Open source games, fun techniqes in several DEs and applications.
I have bought linux format (http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/) and Linux magazine (http://www.linux-magazine.com/) a couple of times and they seem to be interesting, but perhaps you can give me tips on which I should subscribe to. Which one of these? Or perhaps even another one?
Greetings!

I've been reading Future's "Format" series since issue 1 of ST/Amiga Format, which must be about 20 years ago now. They're good, but as gazj says, they have a tendency... well, not exactly to be geared towards the less knowledgeable, but to accommodate such a wide range of knowledge that they end up feeling too "heavy" for the newbies and too superficial for gurus. It's still worth reading, though: if you're a distro hopper, the coverdisc saves gigabytes of downloading.
Linux Magazine is good if you want something a bit more technical. It does seem to be an English language edition of the German magazine, mianka, although they go out of their way to hide it. It's almost worth the cover price for Klaus Knopper's column alone. I learned a few useful tricks there.
(Oh, how I wish for a Linux mag like the last year or so of CU Amiga. It went from being one of the worst computer magazines ever to one of the best almost overnight when Amiga Format and Amiga User International closed and it took on about half their staff. Incidentally, a lot of them are at LXF now: Nick Veitch and Neil Bothwick spring to mind. The Dragonfly BSD guy, Matt Dillon, was there too.)

  • Arch Linux Magazine, February 2010

    Another month, another issue!
As promised, we are slowly working back towards releasing the monthly copy of Arch Linux Magazine on the first. This month I was only a few short hours off from my target time. On the flip side, this month we have a few new features (and one noticeably missing, sorry... it'll be back next month). Hopefully we'll be able to keep doing the new features and, over time, build ALM up to what I know it can be.
My sincerest thanks to those of you who continue to contribute, and for those of you who are interested in contributing in the future (or translating), we now have a wiki page designed specifically for you! As for those who are waiting for sources for translation, I haven't forgotten you and will be sending you the link in the morning... it's long past my bedtime.
    And so, without further ado...

If you're referring to the Desk Shot, it's my desk.  The PDF has my name, but the text version doesn't seem to.
As for why...I always find it interesting to see what kind of environment people work in, simply because it can often make me feel better about mine   Besides that, probably isn't much else to say for/against it.  Similar to the Desk Shot thread on the forums, not too many people posted in it, but there were a few who were interested in it.

@ghost its not fair to blame the community when theres little communication. communication have to happen in public and not via email.
maybe it would be appropiate to set up some basic magazine rules, organize and communicate? in example:
    * a solid release date
    * a solid number of articles must have been asigned and finnished to release the magazine on the above date, if not, the magazine is not released until next month or until there is enough material and articles.
    * assignation and communication happen in public through the wiki, mailinglist, a special forum or some other public place.
    * open planing.
    * etc etc
feel free to fill the list!
Ah! But there is public communication! Through these threads, the wiki, and the irc channel!

  • Arch Linux Magazine, April 2010

I promised the community that we'd be back to our standard format this month, and as promised, we are! Once again, ALM brings you an insight into the community that can be found nowhere else. As with anybody else, we had to pull an April Fools gag of our own... see if you can find it! Unfortunately, I don't had a spare netbook to donate to whoever finds it first... check out April Fools Challenge for more info.
    Enjoy!

These are exactly the reasons why I fail to take Linux (and it's community) completely seriously. You can't depend on anything or anyone. What would I have done if I was in a desperate need of some information on that site? Best case scenario would be minutes lost digging my way through that mess. Worst case would be hours trying to find another source. If kernel.org think of itself as unimportant enough to effectively close down for a day, just for the fun of it, why not close the site for good?
I too really, *really* hate april fools.
I think that you could simply click in "Normalize page" link (top righ) :-)

I have tried logging out of iTunes under Settings and back in but I still can't get it to work with the application.  I sent an email to the application support and received the following email:
    Hi Thomas,
Really sorry about that. This sounds like an issue to do with your
Apple ID on your iPad, and not so much with our Linux Pro app.

  • Arch Linux on Magazine

    Arclinux diffusion in Italy.
    Rome, 4th of June 2004 14:30
I was out for lunch 30 minutes ago and at the newspaper shop I found a Linux magazine with a CD of Archlinux 0.6.
On the front page there was "Archlinux 0.6 a very tiny and fast linux distribution i686 optimized"
Unfortunatly I forgot to see the name of the Magazine

If you go back there, would you mind purchasing one and shipping it to me?  I can give you my shipping address in email.
Maybe I'll start a collection of Archlinux memorabilia...

  • Arch Linux Reviewed in Argentinian Magazine

Im happy to announce that after some work and evangelization, Arch Linux was reviewed in a local and quite popular Linux magazine here in Argentina. The magazine is called USERS Linux and its in Spanish. The review was followed by some questions they made me as admin of ww.archlinux.com.ar, if there is enough interest i will translate the article.
I collaborated on the article, so i cant say its "objective", its quite centred in the distribution and community, touching point by point the pluses and differences with others, we mention Arch64 and Archie as they had some good reasons to be on the article, the first being for those with 64bit procesors and want the best out of them, and the second for those who didnt want to risk to install Arch without trying it out first.
Congrats to Judd and all the developers, and i hope this gets us some more Spanish Talking users!
You can find a scan of each page here:
    http://www.archlinux.com.ar/blog/2006/0 … ers-linux/
    edit:
Changed the URL as the site changed hosting and I moved the whole system.

    Hi,
im going to start translating the articles, but i will go slow unless there is a bit more interest, either way, sooner or later it will be translated.
    brain0:
Yes, your are right, i missed that. I will write them so they can print an "errata" on the next issue, there is also a typo, they printed CRUZ instead of CRUX.
On the other hand, although it has been talked to death, no-one actually tried Arch on a K6-2, so we dont know for sure if it works or not. According to several posts here and some sites found via google, AMDs K6-2 are missing a couple of functions necesary to be fully i686 compliant. They are pretty common in this latitudes, so maybe someone gives it a shot and we will know for sure once and for all!

  • Linux History Through Magazines

So I was going through my magazines looking for bathroom reading and I found the first Linux magazine I ever bought way back in January of 2000.
It made me think somebody else must have also have the first Linux magazine they ever bought. So take a pic, post it up and reminisce.
    Here's the pick of mine.
    http://i.imgur.com/idaED.jpg
I remember I actually bought my first distro. It was Caldera Linux. I then tried Slackware and failed miserably. Since then I've tried a lot of distros, Mandrake, Fedora, Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, etc., etc.. Now I run all my machines as minimal as possible while still providing the functionality I require, and all are on Arch.
Pls post your first or earliest magazine you still have and what distro you first tried if you can remember.
-- mod edit: please read the Forum Etiquette re. image size http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … s_and_Code [jwr] --

I remember the day way back in 1999 when I spotted the APCmag Linux Pocketbook at the local store. Without hesitation I forked out $20 and it was mine. It came with 3 cd's containing Red Hat 6.0 and Caldera 2.2. I chose to run Red Hat, so that was my first distro. The great thing  was that the pocketbook explained everything in detail and made setting up a system easy. For a long time it was my goto reference for anything linux. I still have the cd's and the old Gateway 2000 I used back then so when I have some free time I might just revisit Red Hat for a bit of nostalgia.

  • Arch Linux Newsletter December 2009?

For those of you who didn't see my email on the Arch General mailing list, here's the situation with the Arch Linux Newsletter/Arch Linux Magazine. As many of you know, Kensai recently moved and got married and I recently moved and have been trying to find a job. My situation led to me having difficulty finding the time to dedicate to the Newsletter/Magazine that I have in the past. Combined with Kensai's absence (and as such, our inability to post anything even if we had a completed issue), this caused the lack of our great publication for the last few months. Thankfully, the situation has been rectified and we are now preparing for our next issue. Unfortunately, this solution has come at a cost. Our fearless leader has decided to step down from his position in order to dedicate more time to his new-found family and I can't say I blame him. As such, we wish Kensai the best and hope that once his life calms down him start contributing again, even if in just a small way.
After much deliberation (alright, so maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit), the Arch Linux development team has graciously decided that they want to keep me on as editor of our official publication. As such, I am preparing for the release of our next issue! I would like to see us make a comeback to where we left off and then some. I want to see more community contributions and writers, and I want to get the Schwag report back. I want more sections and special features and I even have a few surprises in store for you all down the road a bit.
This improvement is going to be a big project and I can't do it alone. If any of you, our loyal readers, are willing to contribute please step up and say so. Leave a message here, join me in #archlinux-magazine on freenode, or send me an email at [email protected]. You don't have to have a mass media background or immense technical knowledge, I can find a way for anyone to contribute. Help us make the new Arch Linux Newsletter/Arch Linux Magazine the best one yet!

kensai wrote:Is so hard to say good bye, guys thanks for all the support you have given me all this time, without this wonderful community I would have never done all I did. I hope one day I will come back, when things get more stable, cause you know, when starting something new the start is a mess most of the time until things settle down.
Don't think of it as a "good bye", but as a "See you soon".  I'll bet you'll be back once you're settled in (which may or may not happen faster than you expect).  Either way, best of luck for now and the future, and don't sweat the small things, chances are time will fix most of the small messes.
and to ghost: Do you have a rough estimate of when we might be getting started on the newsletter and such?

  • What's the group used for when doing auth with LDAP?

I thought searching by user is enough, just as ldapsearch does, defining Base DN, user entry's object class, etc.
I saw in some examples, besides users, seems like something about group is also defined, such as group filter etc.
How are these parameters are used? Is search of groups preceding users?
    Thank you!

I hear the Arch Linux Magazine could always use some contributions, if you're inclined towards that sort of thing. I've been wanting to write an article for a while, but I've not run into anything in my Arch experience so far that's really inspired an article out of me.

  • Arch related webpages

In an effort to keep all the main Arch Linux-related webpages in one thread, to make it easier for the community to find interesting/fun links related to arch exclusively, I will be maintaining a list here.  Some of these are strewn in the Arch Linux homepage, or in the forums (as sigs), or elsewhere.  I'd like to have the community have a page where they can find most/all of them, for ease of access, or to provide newer members a look into the "Arch Linux world"
If you have any archlinux related webpages you'd like to see added, or any particular idea on how these should be displayed, please post on this thread.
    Arch Linux in General
Beginners' Guide- The Arch Linux Beginners' Guide - Read it!
Arch Linux start page - A quick and easy homepage for Arch users, with forum, wiki, aur and bug search built-in, as well as new package lists

    Dusty
    if you mean http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Community_Projects
yes, but as i said, there are links in the homepage, in the wikis', in the forums, and there's no one place where we can find all the pages (i'm not talking individual blogs/websites for users, i mean more generalized arch related things).  What the wiki lacks can be found here, and so on.  Also i just noticed that page is more project-related than general usage related.  I'd like this thread to be a place for community members (i'm thinking primarily new members, but all members in general) to get a quick fix on different online resources for Arch users.
In a way this thread is meant to expand the wiki, as most people seem to come to the forums first for answers.  The wiki is also not very visible, but if I can get a sticky on this post, or keep updating it regularly, it'll provide more visibility to arch-supporting sites.
[edit] and some of the pages, like the Arch linux magazine, listed in the wiki, are no longer valid (that particular one goes to Severalls Mental Hospital)   - try it yourself http://archuser.com

  • Re: Satellite won't start up due to virus

One of my computers got a virus and it was passed onto my Satellite Toshiba Notebook by a USB stick.
Now when i turn my laptop on, the Screen lights up, but remains blank (except for the mouse).
I tried System Restore- it didn't work; I had three restrore points- and each of them said that the system restore did not work successfully due to a system error.
I also checked the memory and everything- but I'm avoiding the System Recovery (the one where all files will be deleted) as i desperately need to keep my files.
What can i do to solve my problem??

Probably too lat now but here's hoping. If you were able to try a system restore then the computer is working but Windows is broken. Get along to WHSmith or your favourite newsagent and find a Linux magazine with a free distribution of Linux that can be run from the cd/dvd. Change the BIOS setting on your laptop to boot from CD/dvd (optical drive) and re-boot with the Linux disc in the cdrom drive. You should then be able to access your data on the hard drive and write it to a memory stick or 3 (or more), Remember it is only the data you want but do not forget your email address book.
VERY IMPORTANT. When you put the memory stick in another computer, get it scanned by you anti-virus software before doing anything else. Do not even "open folder to view files" until you have run the virus scan.
If you have only one memory stick and too much data, save the first batch to another computer AFTER the virus check then note what has been transferred, clear the memory stick and go back to the laptop for the next instalment. Repeat process as often as necessary until all data is retrieved, remembering to virus scan the stick each time before dumpinng its content to another computer.
When all your data is safe, run the Toshiba system restore.
Sorry this response is so long after the event but this is the first time I have looked at the forums.
As you might guess, I am a retired computer support professional. Do not be afraid of Linux. A free "distro" that runs from the cd/dvd will not need to install anything on your Hard Disk Drive and is not complicated to run.
My own solution would be to remove the hdd and install it in a usb portable drive enclosure but that would probably invalidate your warranty.
