Lion on MacMini server fails on mirrored drives

Hello
last year I bought an MacMini server (10.6). Which I installed with mirrored harddrives (2 partitions, one partition for OS and one for the ServiceData).
Everything worked fine.
Upgrading to Lion messed up the whole system so i decided to start from scratch.
I formated the mirrored boot volume and inserted a bootable Lion USB stick.
Then I selected the fresh formated volume.
The installation process then copies everything onto the named partition and reboots the machine.
After waiting in front of the machine for 20-30 mins a windows pops up telling me that it cannot install the ecovery partition.
So my questions are:
1) Does anyone know how to prevent the attempt to install a recovery partition
2) Is it possible to install immediatly Lion server insead of making 2 steps ?
3) Is it possible to have under lion again a seperate ServiceData partition from the beginning instead of having the time consuming task in moving everything by hand after installation ?
Thx

It was quite a while ago now, so maybe there has since been a software fix to either Windows or BootCamp to fix.
There has not.

    Scenario:
Server A is a Windows 2008 server with software mirrored drives running incremental backup to removable media
    Server A dies but I have a working backup - seed/incrementals.
I bring in Server B and want to recover from the server A's backup media.
We have done this for non-software-mirrored situations - what would we have to do when the source is software-mirrored? Create two VHD's in the VM to be recovered to?

How does Disk2VHD deal with software mirrored drives in the original physical computer?  I understand it creates a VHD but does that VHD have the mirrored drives in it? As far as I can tell it creates a single VHD file and then you attach that VHD
to a VM. However the fact is that the original was 'two drives - software mirrored' so the VM will need two VHD's won't it - one for each mirror. The process of doing this is unclear. Have you ever done this particular process?

  • How do I reinstall on MacMini server?

I've had an awful experience going from snow leopard server to lion server using the migration instructions and assistant.  So I am starting fresh again on a new Mac Mini server I've only had for a week.
How do I reinstall Lion Server on the MacMini server when it came with Lion server and it's not in my app store?
I noticed that COMMAND + R gives me the internet recovery, but no the built in recovery. Why is that?
After agreeing to run the Lion installer through the internet recovery, I am told that features such as FileVault and Recovery mode aren't supported on my System disk (which is a mirrored set from the installed 500 GB drives) and these features will not be available because I am installing Lion (client) on the drive (which is necessary first before installing Server.app). No Recovery mode.  What does this mean and why not.
Doesn't it seem that if you buy a MacMini Server that the installed OS and Server ap would be placed in my app store account for emergencies?
I need a non-online way to recover this serve should it fail or I need to start fresh again.  I already had a Lion USB recovery disk that I made which worked for my Mac Pro, but not my Mini Server.  When I tried to boot frmo it, I just got a grey circle crossed out.
Anyd advice would be much appreciated
This all started because the migration didn't make my mini server an open directory master like the snow leopard server was.  I decided to start over and do i manually.
    MacMini Server 2011

Reboot with Command + R. That will start your mini from the recovery partition. Once in recovery mode, use disk utility to erase your disk.
Now repartition it with 1 partition. Call it "Mini HD" or whatever you like. Format as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). Click the 'Options' button, GUID Partition Table should be the default. Choose it if it's not. Now click Partition. Boom, you have a properly formated HD ready for a fresh installation of Lion.
Next, quit Disk Utility and choose the option to reinstall Mac OS X. It will download from Apple servers and when it's done you can do a clean install.

  • Considering a Dell U2711 for MacMini Server

    Hi All,
I am planning to buy a MacMini Server to go with my Dell U2711 Display.
I am a bit confused regarding the means of connecting the Display to MacMini for running at 2560 x 1440 resolution.
Apple tells on MacMini specifications page, that output through HDMI is limited to 1920-by-1200.
That said, I am left with the "Thunderbolt" way to achive the native resolution of 2560 x 1440, right?
So, what cable should I use to connect the display through thunderbolt port?
Some articles suggest using the so called "Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI" Cable to do that, but then isn't is a misleading naming for a thunderbolt cable?
I would expect something like a "Thunderbolt to Dual Link DVI" cable.
    Thanks!

Iam buying this model, have tou tried 1080p videos external monitors anf full hd flash videos from vimeo?

Just though I should fill in a bit here, as I have now bought this laptop and running Arch 64bit on it. So if any other users are considering this laptop, here are a few lines about it:
I have it up and running with LUKS disk encryption, everything works fine so far. I'm running XFCE with just a minor problem that the bottom panel is kinda blinking 3 or 4 times right after boot. Havn't tested webcam nor bluetooth, but sound and everything else seems to work fine.
Two of my biggest problems were to get the wifi up and running and to get an acceptable performance when viewing videos in full screen. As for the wifi; just me not understanding that I needed a kernel module AND a firmware.. (If someone wants to fill me in on why we need a firmware AND a kernel module/ driver, I'd be glad.) I installed the iwlwifi-5000-ucode without knowing I also needed the iwlagn module too. After that was fixed, I am now using network manager with no problems.
I have also had some problem with the Radeon 3670. The performance was bad in full screen videos when I used the xf86-video-radeonhd. (I followed arch wiki). It didn't help to use vide-ati neither, and no settings in the xorg.conf did fix my problem. I also noticed that DRI was failing in xorg.log. After alot of trying I decided to try the git-versions which are found in the AUR. I'm happy to say that I can now watch 720 (the only video resolution I have tried yet) with acceptable quality
All in all, I'm quite happy with the computer so far. A bit warm maybe. Oh,  and the screen (full HD version) is SOO nice :-)

I just bought a MacMini Server.  I moved our company's website to it successfully.  However, I'm currently using GoLive 9 to edit the .html files on a separate computer running Snow Leopard currently.  Some of the images aren't coming through on the Lion MacMini Server now.  Before I hook the server up to the network replacing the old server, when I do this and the .html files on the server can see the computer where I do the editing of said .html files will the files' referencing Photoshop Smart Objects of GoLive fix this?  These .html files do keep looking for the .psd files that are on the external hard drive of the editing computer.  I would ask the Adobe Discussion Group but the login feature of that site is not working.  Thank you so much for your help in advance! :-)

  • MacMini server used as regular computer ?

I love the specs on the new MacMini server, and want to buy one. I see it comes with server software, and I know absolutely nothing about the Lion server software. I want to use this MacMini as a regular computer - I want to use it's first hard drive for Mac OSX, and the second hard drive to put Windows 7 on (running on bootcamp, directed from the first hard drive). However I know nothing of Lion server software. Can I disable the server part of Lion server, and use it as a regular computer, or do I have to wipe the server software off and put regular Lion or snow leopard OSX on it ? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

When you first start up the Mini Server, simply do not
enable any of the server services.  And if you do by
accident do that, you can simply open the Server App
    and disable it from there.
BTW, it does make a pretty nice workstation.  Using one
myself with a Thunderbolt display.  Also, if you decide to
get one, upgrade it to 8 gig right away.   I put the following
in mine and works just fine and is currently only $40.99.

  • Install Windows 7 on MacMini Server 0x80300024

I have a MacMini Server running Lion - latest updates.
It has two internal hard drives.
One hard drive will be formatted with Lion, the other with Windows Professional 7 SP1.
    (no partitioning)
I used Boot Camp to create a Windows Installer on an attached USB drive using a Windows 7 Pro with SP1 ISO image.
Boot Camp begins the Windows install process.
I am prompted to Select Disk 0 Partition 2 BOOTCAMP, and format it with NTFS.
After doing so, I get the "Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error: 0x80300024."
After Googling I see this is because Windows doesn't like additional drives attached.
Basically people are recommending either removing other drives or erasing other drives.
Neither of these options works, because the other drive is what has Lion and Boot Camp on it.
I wouldn't mind erasing it, as there is no end user data on it yet, but then how could I run Boot Camp to install Windows?
Is it possible to erase or remove the internal disk with Lion on it and boot from that USB drive without the aid of Lion/Boot Camp?
    Suggestions?

  • Iphoto lost all photos - request to server failed?

I have a 2011 intel iMac. It is the (supposedly) powerful 3.1ghz i5, and i upgraded the RAM to 12 Gig. Before buying this machine I had a 2008 iMac and LOVED it, it was superb. But this machine is SLOWER than that one was?! I am running OSX lion, iLife 09 and iWork 11. I am having a nightmare with this machine, it hands constantly, i only have a few apps open and still it can take 5-10 seconds (beachballing) for finder to draw my files when i open a folder. This can't be right. I have reloaded the entire machine from scratch twice by  cloning files off and then MANUALLY rebuilding it (not using Migrate Assistant to ensure to i was not bringing any bad data or bugs across from old installation or old machine).
It is slow as a dog, way slower than my old iMac which had a mere 2 Gig of Ram! If i open more than 10 browser tabs in Safari it goes so slow I can't use the internet. The machine crashes at least twice a week and just hands so I have to force shutdown, and my latest error is iPhoto just lost ALL my photos, 5 years worth and gives the error "Request to server failed" but says nothing else of any use. I am hoping to recover them with TimeMachine but wait and see on that score as nothing seems to be right with this machine so no doubt TM will play up as well.
I have VMWare Fusion installed, latest version. It does seem slower when running that, but it still crashed and plays up when that is not running so I am sure that is not the source of any problems, it just makes them a bit worse due to processor usage.
Is it possible to get an iMac diagnostically checked (hardware) at an Apple store? It is still under warranty this machine, but I can't drop it off at a store without wiping all my data (clone) to external drive, because I have confidential information stored on it which I can't leave on if the machine leaves my office.
Appreciate it if anyone with any similarly bad experiences of newer iMacs could chip in and suggest any ideas. I struggled to afford to buy this machine, and thought it would sky rocket my performance and speed after my old machine started to get slow due to age, but even at its worst it was never this bad. I am now a very very disappointed Apple lover, ex-lover?!
One final point I should mention, I upgraded the RAM myself, using proper stuff from Crucial. I read that it didn't matter what order the RAM cards were fitted in, is that true or should I try moving them around?
    Thanks

Thanks very much for such a quick reply, really appreciate any help I can get with this as I have basically had problems daily for months now and its really ruining my business now. I am not as techie savvy as many others on here, but will do my best.
I did everything you said and here are the results:
Activity Monitor shows top 3 (fluctuating) processes as:
shockwave flash (chrome Plug-In Host) 26% now but jumping between that and down to 8%
    Google Chrome renderer 3-7%
Safari Web Content this varies usually between 2% right up to well over 100% (i have seen 120%). When machine is playing up i often see this as being over 100%.
    Memory Tab:
    2.1MB Pageouts
Disk Usage - free space is, have a 1TB drive so plenty of free space. 289 GB free
I looked in Console. Have never looked at that before.
I clicked "All Messages" and notice something possibly a bit odd.
There are THOUSANDS of messages like this one:
"29/05/2012 18:41:54.292 1PasswordAgent: [HYBI] socketDidDisconnect: Error Domain=GCDAsyncSocketErrorDomain Code=7 "Socket closed by remote peer" UserInfo=0x1058098d0 {NSLocalizedDescription=Socket closed by remote peer}" - I use 1Passwd to manage my passwords for browsers. There are lines and lines of these in Console messages. Looking through them, they appear every single minute of every hour, sometimes two per minute. They all look identical to this one quoted here.
Another noteworthy message in Console is:
"29/05/2012 19:21:17.000 kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero". There was one in last few minutes, a few 20 mins ago, and some further up but not on any pattern of frequency.
Should I paste a long list in here so you can see what my console looks like?
    Thanks so much

If the port is already in use how to find which server is running on that port, how to find the process and kill it. I am using weblogic 8.1 sp4 in Solaris 8.

    Bruce:
It sounds like (as you already note) failed to shutdown WLS, that is why the
.loc file was held and why the port is in use, WLS process was still
running. To see why it failed to shut down, I would examine the
weblogic.log, aslo the servers std out and err. Additionally taking a
thread dump (if possible) on the "it wont shut down" wls java process should
show (maybe unless the VM is hosed), where/what is hanging on/around. Do
you happen to have native code running with wls, say a type 2 JDBC driver?
Otherwise it sounds like a VM bug. But more data is needed to be sure.

I was shutting down the WLS server using the console shutdown and itfailed to shutdown completely. I then attempted to use the kill command on
the process which usually works. This time I was unable to kill the process
without using the kill -9 command. When I attempted to bring the server
back up I got a failure to get a lock on the embedded ldap. I removed the
.loc file and came further up but was unable to get further than the
listener ports which were still locked to the old process. Do you know of
anything I can do the get the WLS server back up without rebooting my

netstat -an shows the port is in use but the only process that is alloweduse that port is WLS.

  • Very slow reads from Mirrored drives

    Hi all -
I'm running a Tiger G5 Xserve with mirrored 80Gig SATA drives as the primary HD, and a standalone 250Gig SATA drive in the third bay. At the end of each workday, SuperDuper does a smart update from the mirrored drive to the standalone drive as a backup, and it takes about 40 minutes to run through 40Gigs of data.
I also backup via SuperDuper directly from the mirrored drive to an external 2.5" 80Gig firewire drive once a day for offsite backup, and that takes 40 minutes.
That means I'm getting nearly identical performance to an onboard SATA 3.5" and an external Firewire 400 2.5" - strongly suggesting that it's something in the RAID mirror, rather than in the interface or SATA channel of the receiving drive.
Last week, for some reason, I selected the standalone drive as the source for the backup, and it took 8 minutes. After a bit testing, it seems clear that doing the same backup takes roughly 5x longer when the source is the mirrored drive. The server load is quite light at backup time - under 20% before the backup, under 50% during the backup, even though smart update has a LOT of files to sift.
My understanding is that mirrors are often slower to write than other configurations, as they have to sync, but this is almost entirely a reading transaction, and I've never seen anything about mirrors being so slow to read relative to a standalone.
It this normal? an artifact of the software RAID? Something misconfigured?
It's not a huge problem for me, but since I run this procedure twice a day, it'd sure be nice to have it be one that I come back to in 10 minutes, instead of an hour.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Dean Larue-
This may all be logical, but I would double-check the SuperDuper settings just to make sure that you aren't doing different backup types.
The two 80GB are doing a lot of other stuff whilst you are backing them up and the 250GB just had to read and push files.
I would also imagine that the 2X80GB drives are fuller percentage-wise than the 250GB drive as this too would impact performance.
As it has no files to compare while backing up, SuperDuper is often faster doing the initial backup. Comparing the files on the source drive to the many files on the backup drive takes time.
    Luck-

  • Can I input MacMini server thunderbolt video into IMac minidvi port?

I have a new MacMini server with Thunderbolt video output, and a mid 2010 27" IMac with minidvi external video input.
I have used the IMac as a monitor for my Mac Pro with good results for over a year.
My understanding from the Apple web site is that Thunderbolt video will drive a current model 27" LED Cinema display with minidvi input, so long as the monitor is the last item in the thunderbolt chain.
I have been unable to get the thunderbolt video from my Mac Mini to drive the minidvi external video input on my IMac.
Am I doing something wrong?  The monitor is the last (and only) item from the thunderbolt output on the MacMini server.
I continue to struggle with the disparate apple video standards, but need the ability to occasionally use the IMac in its external monitor mode, as opposed to remoting in to the MacMini server across the network.
    Any help appreciated.

    My Bad...
MiniDisplayPort is required, and this is what I have.
I believe that I finally solved the problem after getting through to a tier 2 Apple tech.
It does work, but there are several caveats:
    1.  Both machines are required to be on before connecting them.
    2.  This mode will support Windows 7 in boot camp, but you are required to connect the two devices in OSX, be certain the video is displayed on the monitor which is in Target Display mode, and then reboot the source machine to boot camp.
    3.  The MiniDisplayPort is the required cable, even though the source machine might use thunderbolt.
    Thanks....
