[LiveCD/USB] CTKArch Live 0.7 release

Hi there !
I haven't posted there since the beginning of my live system project, since it was only available in French.
But lilsirecho was so enthusiastic about it that I finally released it in English/French !
[EDIT] the new site is http://ctkarch.org
So, after two intensive weeks of coding, there it is :
http://calimeroteknik.free.fr/ctkarchlive/index-en.html
CTKArch 0.6 (live screenshot) :
The documentation will be more precise, but the main ideas and features are :
1/ Lightweight :
That means nothing is launched without you requesting it, and that I always try to launch as few processes as possible.
It doesn't use much RAM, here is a screenshot with desktop/web browser/filemanager using 43MiB RAM.
So when I say lightweight I really mean it.
2/ Functional :
All included apps (see documentation for details) are indispensable.
Everything you can't live without should be there : web, ftp, email, chat filemanager&archiver, office, image, audio/video reading and editing and CD burning.
3/ Hardware support, technical novelties and Arch compliance
In the 0.5 version, an experimental GIT version of nouveau was included, which allowed me tu run smooth 3D on most nVidia cards !
All possible drivers for video are included (with scripts to set them up if needed) ; the goal is to support the most possible machines out of the box. As it is for sound.
Now, I use nouveau from the repos, as I do for the rest of the system : I want to keep in touch with Arch, using the best possible the repos, for updates to go the best possible when the system is installed.
The last bleeding-edge function is the clean BTRFS support, for the persistent home, and at installation and after.
4/ Modular :
The home folder can be put on a read/write partition (the comon case is to dd the iso on a flash drive and create this partition in the remaining space)
Then, to be able to modify the whole system as much as you want, there is the "add-on" support.
They are squashfs archives you can simply copy to the "addons" subfolder of the persistent home partition, or since 0.6, in the addons folder of the CD. (this allows to very simply remaster the CD)
And of course you can install it on a PC at any time, with any combination of the base-system/addons/personal-home !
I'll add I'm very fond of fancy boots and desktops, so I think this live system (and resulting installation) give a good example of how I think an Arch install should look like.
Hope you like it !
I'm open to suggestions by the way, if they can get along with my idea. Otherwise, make an addon and everyone will be happy !
[EDIT] You can join #ctkarch on freenode to ask questions, share any idea or possible improvement ! ☺

This coming paragraph is not an  distro-error but just a login screen I missed due to a slow starting monitor and auto choice french language settins:
A little  hiccup in the 64 bits livecd;
When I choose Clavier Anglais (not in English) I still get a French menu. Both from the bottom bar and the Openbox context menu.
The language setting still is French in short(when installing, edit the etc/locale.gen file and use locale-gen to change that).
There is no conky on the desktop; what  a brave guy you are, Calimero, to leave that out.
I think it is a good idea for old pc to use Arora, but to make it the default browser is aiming/limiting  this distro at a certain segment, which I would say, no; but of course choices like that are to the dev. Midori has crashed so much in the past that I don't even want to try it anymore.
In Arora the default search engine is Yahoo; didn't even know it existed anymore. I think in any browser that is in the spirit of FSF Duckduckgo should be the default; and it gives much better search results.
In Openbox configuration I miss the themes I like the most, but that is of course also very personal. The icon theme is Azenis. The default look is a bit like modern black scheme a few years ago.
This is totally unimportant of course  but in this field, the look and feel the distro can make major improvements, look for instance at ADComp wonderful openbox configurations in Madbox 9.04 or 10.04.
LxAppearance and Obconfig for configuration  of openbox but not Obmenu. I also miss the wonderful Adeskbar, a beauty of a little, lightweight dock. Then you can leave out fbpanel.
Similarly the rc.xml file is totally basic; no keybindings to programs at all. So in the openbox department there are a lot ofconfiguration choices left open. A bit too much to my liking.
The fact you have to start wicd by hand at each live session, is understandable as a theoretical point of view, but just not practical; I think you should compromise here.
Testing my webcam with mplayer tv://  worked well with a Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX.
In the application choice apart from webbrowser I find little problems; I like pcmanfm.
Other Reseau/network programs pidgin, sylpheed, xchat, gftp.
Terminal app rxvt unicode
Gpicview (not listed in the ob contextmenu) wouldn't be my first choice. I prefer Ristretto which is also very lightweight.
Gtkam to get pic from you camera and Gimp.
Audacious, Avidemux, smplayer, brasero, mhWaveEdit for video and music.
Gnumeric, Abiword and ePDFviewer

  • Making a bootable USB Drive for Windows 8 Release Candidate; How To?

    Hello everyone,
I am in the process of building a Windows PC and I need to make a bootable USB Thumb Drive to Install the Windows 8 Release Candidate on. The only problem is when I go into the restore section of Disk Utility it always comes up with either of these errors:
    Thanks in advance,

I have created PC bootable USB's on Mac OS X before but I am having trouble finding the instructions to duplicate that.  It's been a while.  It's not impossible though.

  • Arch-live beta 1 released

    Hey, this is godane.
Me and Tatzi came up with some scripts for a zenwalk live distro we were making. Tatzi did most of the scripting where i add alot of the stuff from zenwalk's build scripts to his build scripts to it make neater. Tatzi told me about MeoW linux live cd he made a while back and that it was base on arch linux.
I decide one day to try to make are build scripts work for arch linux. I needed to know if it was possible to make a modular live cd/usb system like slax/zenlive with arch linux. I found out it was hard at first because i didn't know much about the pacman system you guys made.
Anyway i figure out how to use it. For my modules i use a file with a list of package that will be installed in a aufs union. When one module is completed it will change the read-write folder then go on to the next package list for the next module. Its done this way so you have control of what package goes where. This is not like archie or faunOS or even MeoW linux. This a true modular system like slax or zenlive. This has not been done for arch linux yet.
I know you would say faunOS is a modular live system. No its not. Its just a mirror of a hard drive using linux-live scripts. I say this cause parts of a package is in all modules. You can't really take out a package with out having to change the whole system.
    here are my goals:
    1. To make a modular live cd/usb system like zenlive for arch linux.
    2. To make it easier to make update modules for the system to stay up to date.
    3. To make a desktop like zenwalk with xfce for default desktop.
Here is a link to may project page for now:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/chrisx/
NOTE: I know the project page says chrisx. I don't have the arch-live page yet. This is just for now.
The iso is update to 20060206 core+extra+community.
Here are some of the module scripts:
update2lzm name: This is to copy the current /var/lib/pacman/local and to do a pacman -Syu in a tmp folder.
    arch2lzm package_name:     Copy's the current /varlib/pacman/local and makes a package with deps.
You can also make modules from folders in thunar by right-clicking and click on the build module option.
    I hope this helps.

    Hi godane,
Glad to see you working on this. The more live distros the better
I am trying to figure out what exactly you mean by "modular". Do you mean something like morphix, where the OS is comprised of a set of modules, like a module for scientific apps, a module for X apps, etc?
    Here are some points:
    - You can uninstall any package you like in FaunOS and save your session at reboot/shutdown and that package is gone. This is done normally through pacman.
    - FaunOS is a lot more than just a mirror of a hard drive with linux live scripts. We actually use larch to produce FaunOS not linux live scripts. There is the session saving feature of larch that we use which I think you have missed. Session saving allows you to save changes back to the boot device as overlays that are unioned with previous images. Also this allows us to have not write back anything to the USB at runtime, elongating the life of the USB drive. You only write once, if you chose to save your session to you boot device.
I am currently downloading your system.
I will let you know my thoughts.
Thanks and keep up the good work,

    Hallo all,
I was eager to buy the aforementioned SB model (USB SB Li've! 24-bit External) as my laptop doesn't seem to get any input from my guitar through the embedded sound card.
I was wondering, as this is the primary and only reason for me to buy this model, if I could plug my guitar in the input jack and record from there, or if a little amp is needed (as for other cards).
    Any idea?
Thanks in advance for any kind response,

    Hi
When you use LineIn for guitar you propably need a preamp (Guitar amp with LineOut, DI
    box, POD, Mixer, ...).
If you use MicLine then you propably get a weak sound (set mic boosting +20dB, if there
is this setting on Li've! software).
Check also settings on Creative Mixer (input source, rec source, and levels).
(I do not have this card/software so I'm not sure 'bout what mixer settings you have.)

Help please! I have connected LP turntable (I am assured which has preamp inbuilt) to line-in port on S/Blaster external using lead inbuilt from?turntable with white/red RCA plugs with a line -in plug converter. Then connected external soundcard?to the notebook USB-USB as per manual. I have tried Creative's Smart Recorder but it shows no sound coming through on Analysis (same with Audiograbber software too). Sound card diagnostics show sound card OK and I can plug in headphones and get output. I am thinking hardware connection issue as I connected direct from turntable to microphone input &?got loud mike low quality recording but I ustand this is not recommended as can blow sound card (and poor receording anyway)? Is there another device I can easily plug into line in to test - or any other ideas gratefully received.

  • Driver for USB SB live! 24 bit exter

I left my CD at home in Hong Kong and now I'm in the USA, so would any body tell me where could I get the driver for USB SB li've! 24 bit external?
Thank you very much, I'm really sad as I just bought something new and can't use it.

    jkiang,
The driver is not available for download at the moment. You could check with Direct Sales Department if they have the CD for order. Their phone number is -800-998-000 and it is option #. They are open from 9:00AM to 6:00PM (CST) Monday to Friday.

  • Managing Live fonts to release HD space

Hello again..i seem to be asking a lot of questions and i hope i can help as i learn more...
Ive got issues with hard disk space and i notice Live Type and DVDSP taking a massive 19GB between templates and live fonts. In Livetype i notice the live fonts have a preview but they are not checked as installed. Each 'type' is something like 600MB so they are in my system. Can i just drag live types and templates into the trash and still retain the previews.
For what i am doing i dont really want motion anyway...i can control from FCP
    With thanks..
    Dave

If you'll scroll down a few months of posts, you'll see several folks have asked similar questions. I can save you the time; I do not believe any of the threads have been satisfactorily answered or closed.
When you install, you have an option to ignore the massive collections of movies, objects, presets and textures. You can choose to only load the previews. These are sufficient to do most composing and then, as you are prepared to render, you are asked by the app to insert the appropriate resource disk and only the fonts or textures that you need will be loaded. (This preview-only workflow is ridiculously frustrating, though, I do not recommend it.)
You could, I suppose, carefully hunt down and trash everything associated with LT and then reinstall by loading only the preview elements.
Sorry not to offer more concrete information. You'll do us all a favor by telling us what you try and how it works out.

  • External USB SB-Live! 24-bit: won't "enable monitoring&qu

I'm trying to plug a personal audio device into the Line In jack on my external SB, and it doesn't work. When I UN-mute that source in the Sound Mixer, I get a message saying I have to "enable monitoring." Clicking OK to enable makes no difference. I finally found where that setting is (advanced for that source). When i check the box to enable and then close that window, the check doesn't stick. Next time I open the advanced controls for that source, the box is unchecked again. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. THANKS.Message Edited by mikewillnot on -05-200706:33 AM

I have the same problem. Anyone knows how to fix it's I can't use line-in/mic function at all.

  • Arch Linux Live USB - On a Macbook

    Hey guys, here's my idea:
I have a semi-old Macbook (2yrs) and I have a USB Stick (Corsair 32GB Voyager) that I want to put Arch with Awesome WM onto. Once I have this setup I want to be able to just semi occasionally boot off my Macbook into Arch. I don't want to touch the partitioning of the internal HDD.
I have some ideas, but I figured I might as well get input and see if anyone has personal experience in the matter.
    Thanks!

    I have a ARCH testing with squashfs 4.0 Slax-like LiveCD/USB
and also a slightly older build using squashfs 3.4
    see here
    http://multidistro.com/
this is the newest and best
    http://multidistro.com/NFLUXNEW/SQ4/arch4.html
have no idea if it will run on Macbook
though the ZEN kernel has Mac drivers, etc
    kernel 2.6.34-ZENa32
Right now I only have a semi-working script hdd installer
and a manual-install method thats easy
it also can run as persistent usb like Slax

  • Go live with Release

    Hello friends,
what does this question mean, "when will you go live with your Release?" and why would someone on the other team who shares the same instance ask this to me.
    thanks.

    Hi Ronit,
Sounds like you are going live in different phases. So, Phase 1 would be release 1 so on and so forth. This might clarify your first question. If the other person is in R/3 and you are in BI, this makes total sense but, you are a better person to analyze why they asked you this question.
    Thanks and Regards

The install package there is dated April 2007.
Why did you include USB models in your post about new driver releases? Are they somewhere else?
Hmm... maybe you didn't look close enogh behind the link given for drivers for USB models in my post ... though, those are not new final drivers but as the previous USB driver expired 17 or 18 January, E-MU refreshed them 18 January. Also, I have not informed anything 'bout new drivers for USB but only new driver releases as the subject says.

  • Install on SDCard/USB stick, toggle read-only filesystem - possible?

This is something I thought about while installing Arch on an SD card earlier. You know these small switches on some SD cards that make them read-only, right?
Would it be possible to have a setup where Archlinux is installed on a rewritable storage device like an USB Stick or an SD card, where one mode of operation would be to use it like a regular, persisting Arch install (with writeable filesystem). The second mode would be to use it similar to a Live CD, not persisting any data on the storage device and using RAM instead (mounting the root filesystem as read-only).
Basically, you could boot into regular mode (perhaps by choosing a seperate entry in GRUB), change configurations, update packages, etc. Then you reboot into read-only mode and use it as a Live CD with any changes to the filesystem stored only in RAM. This could be combined with system encryption to provide a secure and portable Arch installation that can be kept up-to date and simply by rebooting, you have a protected, volatile environment similar to a Live CD.
Is something like that possible? Has it been done already?

Comment on the "why" for Flash Device....quiet operation, less power required, faster performance and reduced size.
Faster boot time is also possible with raid applied.
As previously stated, running all in ram doesn't provide any performance improvement if the system has at least 2GB of ram.  Thus the use of swap is not required with that much ram.
This principle also applies to Flash Devices which have algortithms controlling the writes across the entire card capacity such that larger capacity increases lifetime expectancy.
Copy- on- write is also proposed for flash devices which reduces the process steps for writing to flash.
In my experience with running-in-ram with CTKArch "live" system, I found not much to endorse using that mode.  A negative of good proportion is the copy-to-ram loading time , which cannot be avoided.
Basically, faster ram is the best approach for performance enhancement in all systems.
Thus, there are herein some reasons for using flash in an arch booting system whether "live" or conventional or raid based.
My raid0 bootable system was outlined in previous post and am using it now.  It is not a USB connected bus arrangement which inherently limits performance.
I find Compact Flash in UDMA or true IDE mode to provide good performance speed of 90mb/s read and 25mb/s write to be a fine alternative to hard drives.  In raid0 read speed is doubled.  Good reason for flash devices but not in usb mode.

I Love the OS, but hate that I can't scan.
I want scanning programme and driver. Any suggestions?

Until Windows 8 releases the only driver for your printer will be an in-OS driver.  In most cases you can scan but it must be usb only.  So if want to scan connect via usb until the Windows 8 releases.
