LMS 3.1 backup

Hi
I'm running LMS 3.1 on a Windows platform. I've encountered an issue where the backup is failing due to insufficient disk space according to the dbbackup.log. It is stating that the required space is just over 26gb for the backup. That sounds quite large to me, can this be made smaller by including exclusions to the backup or is this a normal size ?
Also if i remove the last successful backup which is in the following location: C:\backup (about 1 week old), will this write a new backup within this directory or will it look for the previous backup. The current folder is labelled "89" within C:\backup and within backup we have Generations set to "1". I've attached the dbbackup.log for reference.
Many Thanks

Hi Joe
I've tried to run the dbspacereclaimer.class tool and have had a few problems. The following is what's been tried:
a)pdterm RMEDbEngine
b)pdexec RMEDbEngine
c)C:\Program Files\CSCOpx\lib\jre\bin>java -cp c:\tempo;C:\Progra~1\CSCOpx\lib\classpath;c:\Progra~1\CSCOpx\www\classpath;c:\Progra~1\CSCOpx\MDC\Tomcat\webapps\rme\WEB-INF\classes;c:\Progra~1\CSCOpx\MDC\Tomcat\webapps\rme\WEB-INF\lib\log4j.jar DBSpaceReclaimer
This returned with:
RMEDbEngine needs to be restarted before this tool is run.
SyslogSecond.db cannot be deleted.
SyslogThird.db cannot be deleted.
SyslogFirst.db cannot be deleted.
The same was tried but the SyslogAnalyzer and SyslogCollector before but still have the same issue after restarting the dameon manager and RMEDbEngine.
Tried to re-index the rme database and run the DbSpaceReclaimer tool as below:
a. Shut down daemon manager.
b. after the daemon manager is stopped there was no rmeng.log under CSCOpx/databases/rmeng directory.
c. cd to progra~1\CSCOpx\databases
d. Tried to reindex the databases as follow : dbsrv9 -f c:\progra~1\CSCOpx\databases\rmeng\rmeng.db and it was successful.
e. Start the daemon manager, run pdterm SyslogCollector, pdterm SyslogAnalyzer, pdterm/pdexec RMEDbEngine.
f. Retry the DbSpaceReclaimer.class command.
Same message.
4. a. Tried to change the startup for Damon manager service under Control Panel > Admin tools > Services to manual, and then reboot.
b. Start the RME NG Database service manually from Control Panel > Admin tools > Services.
c. Retry the DbSpaceReclaimer.class command.
I've been advised that the next step is to reinitialize the rme database and reclaim the Syslog*.db files. My only issue with this is that this will remove everything from software distribution and config management so all archives will dissapear I believe. I was wondering whether there may be some other steps that could be tried rather than re-initializing the database as this seems a bit final ?
Many Thanks

At this phase, the backup is trying to verify the database.  When that hangs, it typically means the database is corrut in some way.  It could also point to a very large ANI database, and this phase is just taking a long time.  It also looks like you're trying to backup to an NFS mount.  Can you try a backup to a local file system, and see if the verification completes?

  • Cisco Works LMS 3.2 backup takes too long time to finish

    Hello guys,
We have problem with scheduled LMS 3.2 backup. It  takes more than 12hours to finish. You can see in log that backup is  scheduled for 18:00h and it waits untill 22:07 to start doing anything.  We can't figure out why is there such a delay. It started to happen  after system reported lack of free space on disk. And we feed up the  space, but then faced this problem with long duration. Before this  problem occured backup used to last for 45 min od 1 hour.
Backup to 'C:/BACKUP' started at: [Mon Apr 11 18:01:26 2011]

Do you have any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Marija

This is a catch 22 , you need to apply a patch to fix a backup problem , yet you want to backup before applying a patch.  This is where you will have to assume some risk, and apply the patch w/o a backup.
Go to Common Services -> Device and Credentials -> Device Mgmt and export the entire DCR (All devices) to a CSV file.  Make sure you browse to someplace outside application space, I usually place the file at c:\.  Also make sure you check mark the include credentials box, so you also have all your device passwords.  This is your D/R plan, if things were to fail you will have your device list you can import in an emergency.
Or you can try the suggestion of clearing DFM to mitigate potential loss so you can get a good backup of the rest of LMS.  Just be sure to view your notifications and cut/paste into note pad so they can be rebuilt.  You will lose history and local customizations to Polling and Thresholds and DDV.

The problem is with tar'ing HUM-Reports in /opt/CSCOpx/MDC/tomcat/webapps/upm/reports, and with reaching

    Hi Joe,
    thanks for your feedback.
These files to be tarred aren't there directly after backup stops with error.
It seems that some process stores data about reports in that file and when trying to
pack these reports via tar they are delete by any cleanup method.
    Does this help.
P.S. Backup usually takes about more than 1hour

  • LMS 3.1 Backup job Failing

    Hello,
We have LMS 3.1 installed and the backup is failing with the following message
    [Tue Feb  8 09:20:26 2011]  ERROR(247): E:/Backup_3/backup.LOCK file exists
Most probably another backup process is running
    [Tue Feb  8 09:20:26 2011]  Backup failed: 2011/02/08 09:20:26
I tried to do the following, but it didn't work:
1- Run again the backup job, but specify a new backup directory folder (ex: E:/Backup_4/). --> Did not work
2- - Stop the Deamon Manager service using: net stop crmdmgtd --> Did not work
         - Delete the backup.LOCK file from the E:/Backup_3/ folder
         - Restart the Deamon manager service using: net start crmdmgtd
         - Run the backup job again using the new Folder destination.
    Please Advise,
    Regards,

    I am currently working on a same issue with LMS 3.1 on windows;
After stopping dmgtd have you been able to delete the backup.lock or have you restarted the server?
In my case I was not able to delete the file and it turned out dbvalid.exe blocked this. The backup seems to run without any problems. When the backup is done dbvalid.exe trys to verify the backup database files. This validation fails and dbvalid starts dbsupport.exe to get some detail information on the failure and trys to send them to Sybase support. You should find (several ?) crash files here: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\SQL Anywhere 12\diagnostics. dbsupport.exe seems to be started interactively and thus hangs up waiting for some user input...
In the crash file I see dfmInv mentioned as the database which did not pass dbvalid. I assume I will end up reinitializing the dfm databases to recover - but let's wait and see. I found some hints that there could be a bug with dbvalid.exe form Sybase- not sure if this is the culprit or a real DB error. What I found really strange is the cli of dbsupport.exe (see the option -gui at the end... )
    D:\PROGRA~1\CSCOpx\objects\db\win32\dbsupport.exe" -crash "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SQL Anywhere 10\diagnostics\SA10_20110215_040218_4348.crash_log" -crashpn "dbeng10" -crashsn "dbvdfmInvEng" -gui
Also, I would quickly backout the last know good backup from the backup directory - just in case... (the one before the failure raised the first time)

  • LMS 4.2 backup and restore

    Hi Everyone,
Will the backup funciton in LMS backup the archived config, syslog messages from network device, fault history, scheduled job config, report job, etc, or it just backup the device list and credential?
If I need to restore everything of LMS to a new machine what is the best strategy?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Backup/Restore of entire application will do it for all the devices in LMS DB.
When LMS is operational, there are two ways to keep the device configurations :
    > Shadow Directory
The configuration archive Shadow directory is an image of the most recent configurations gathered by the configuration archive. The Shadow directory contains subdirectories that represent each device class and the latest configurations supported by the configuration archive. Each file name is DeviceName.cfg, as defined in the Device and Credential Repository. Each time the archive is updated, the Shadow directory is updated with the corresponding information. The Shadow directory can be used as an alternative method to derive the latest configuration information programmatically by using scripts or other means. For more details check :
Enabling and Disabling the Shadow Directory
    > Using Config Editor
The Config Editor provides easy access to configuration files. Config Editor allows a network administrator with the appropriate security privileges to edit a configuration file that exists in the configuration archive. The Configuration Management application stores the current and a user-specified number of previous versions of the configuration files for all supported Cisco devices maintained in the Inventory. It automatically tracks changes to configuration files and updates the database if a change is made. For more details, check document :
Editing and Deploying Configurations Using Config Editor
You can use any of the ways to save config and re-use when required.

  • LMS 4.1 Backup

What exactly does the Backup under Admin>>Backup do?.
i want it to backup my config archive (C:\Program Files (x86)\CSCOpx\files\rme\dcma)
but in the directory i choose for backup i dont see the config files
does it only backup the server settings and databases?
    thanks

The Backup feature will take an entire backup of ciscowork data and its db, which includes users and credentials, Topology information, device and credentials, configuration archive, settings, jobs, fault management data and history, custom settings, etc, almost everything.
A backup is useful when the LMS goes through complete crash and need to be rebuilt, or if in case needs to be migrated from one platform/server to another.
You must always have backup saved to recover form such conditions. The backup of perticular information, like configurations are saved in perticular databses inside the xxx.tar files in backup.
You cannot manually restore the selective information from backup, it has to be completly restored using a restore utility script : NMSROOT/bin/restorebackup.pl.
    For mroe detals check :

  • LMS 4.2 Soft Appliance - No Remote Backups?

    Hi All,
I have a new installation of LMS 4.2 on the Soft Appliance and seem ot be only able to configure backups to the local disk?
There is no option to select any of the configured repositories like there is in ACS.
I can backup to /localdisk, after change to filesystem as below:
    chgrp casusers -R /localdisk
    chmod 0775 /localdisk
but the issue is, how to I get this off the box in an automated fashion so it can be part of our corporate backup schedule?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

To backup LMS you need to use the built-in backup utility. The target for your backup can be on a different partition / mount point. See this section of the admin guide.
Almost any database server or server which relies heavily on a database (such as LMS) requires that backup solutions be tightly integrated so as to preserve the data integrity.

  • Problem restoring LMS 2.6 data to LMS 4.0

    Hello,
I'm trying to migrate from LMS 2.6 on a Windows 2003 server to LMS 4.0 on Windows 2008 R2.
Two things I'll note here which might help future people attempting to use the LMS 4.0 backup/restore scripts as detailed in the migration document:
    1) Make sure nobody has installed cygwin on the server before you run the backup scripts. If they have, remove it and the reg keys.
    2) On the target server make sure to run the restore script CMD session using runas or disable UAC on Windows 2008 or the restore scripts will fail
My next problem I can't get past. I've been running the restore since yesterday morning and it still hasn't finished. It hasn't moved from 40% complete migrating the IPM data but in the last 24 hours it has eaten up 6Gb more RAM.

Should I just wait? Is this something that might take days if I've got a lot of IPM data or is it broken? I don't really care about keeping IPM data so could I do something to complete the data migration for everything else? Any advice appreciated.
    regards,
    Aaron

The restore can take a long time if you have a lot of data.  The problem is the database needs to be completely unloaded and reloaded to convert from ASA 9 to ASA 10.  However, if you do not care about IPM data, and you still have LMS 2.6 running, you can take a new LMS backup not using the wrapper.pl script (this will keep IPM from being backed up).

    Rahul,
I think you have issues with your LMS 3.1 server which has been advsied in some other threads to upgrade to atleast LMS 3.2.1 which is free upgrade for you.
Using a End of support product will have consequenses of lack of support mostly. Let us know the challenges you have in upgrade.
People here in CSC can help and suggest solutions.
    -Thanks

  • LMS 3.2 Data transfer

    HI all,
We have created LMS 3.2 in our server and works fine for a while. Now, we have decided to change the server, so we installed LMS 3.2 in our new server once again. my question would be is there any way to export data( all configuration) from privous LMS server to new one ? your help would be appreciated.
    Regards,

Yes there is a way, and its not too complicated.
LMS has a backup utility, which can be restored to another LMS install to migrate previous server data.
    Steps are :
Take Backup --> Install LMS on new Server --> do backup restore.
