Load Balancing in Portal

Hi,
We have IIS as our intermediate web server. We have implemented Clustering. However load balancing is not done and all the requests are going to one server only.
I am not clear about where and how to implement Load balancing.
Please let me know how to go about this.
Thanks,
Suparna

Hi Suparna,
to loadbalance between different SAP WebAS Instances (CI & DI) you would need a loadbalancing instance like the SAP WebDispatcher, Reverse Proxy or a hardware loadbalancer.
Check this <a href="https://forums.sdn.sap.com/thread.jspa?threadID=117847">thread</a> and the link mentioned there.
Hope it helps,
Robert

  • Question about load balancing between Portal and ABAP

    Hi,
I have the problem whit load balancing between Portal and ECC (ERC) ABAP
    Exist two system:
    1) ECC (ERP) ABAP = Backend     Module = HR
    2) EP (JAVA) = Frontend
The users (9000 users) logon in the EP and run query (data personal) in the ECC.  The problem to all user connect in Central Instance and not in the Dialog Instance.
How can balancing the conecction HTTP (EP) to ECC (ABAP)??
I need balancing in the ECC to Dialog Instance

Jco -> right. Another possibility is that you use iviews that point to the backend in this case you will need to use a load balanced entry for the backend system in the [system landscape|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/47/8c1e438d7017fce10000000a42189c/frameset.htm] -> SAP_R3_LoadBalancing
If you have ESS deployed on your portal, you will most probably need to do both.
    Cheers Michael

  • WebAS access via Portal: Web Dispatcher required for load balancing ABAP

    Hi Folks -
We have EP 6.0 SP18 (Java only, WebAS 6.40, Unix/Solaris).  The portal has a CI/SCS and one DI so we have a Web Dispatcher to load balance the portal servers. This works fine (and provides port 80 access).
This portal will provide access to HTTP services from an ABAP WebAS (6.20 with 6.40 kernel, Unix/Solaris). A landscape configuration entry has been added to the portal for this ABAP system. The ABAP system has a CI and multiple app servers, all capable of handling HTTP requests.  This will also require port 80 access.
    1. Will we need an additional Web Dispatcher to load balance HTTP requests to the 'backend' ABAP WebAS system, or will the portal be smart enough to handle the load balancing itself (perhaps based on the information in the landscape configuration)?
    2. If the portal itself handles the HTTP load balancing can you point me to documentation (so I can make sure I have proper configuration)?
    3. Are there any changes to this with NW2004s Portal (we plan to upgrade soon)?
    Thanks in advance!  Jeff

    Jeff,
    Regarding:
Q1. If you create a system object from the "SAP system with load balancing" template in portal and configure the object to point to your CI (msg server), the LB should be handled.
Q2. Portal load balancing is handled by the message server.  If you point a test URL to the port of your message server, you will notice that you are issued a redirect the URL of your dialog instance.  The web dispatcher is just a proxy (with some intelligence).  When a request is made to the WD, it makes a connection to the MSG server, the list of active instances is queried, a redirect is made to that instanct.  If you use WD, that connection can be proxied behind a standard URL.   If you connect directly to the MSG Server instead, you will notice your URL change, just as it does on the service marketplace.
WDs are good for providing services, masked (proxied) behind virtual names.  If you do not want the customer to see a physical URL of the server, use the WD.  There are lots of other solutions that can do this too though such as Apache, ISA, Juniper devices, Cisco LDs.  WDs have a very low performance threshold though, especially if you use SSL. WD is a performance bottleneck and should be benchmarked to see if it is right for your application.
Q3. No changes this architecture in 04s.

  • Oracle Portal Load Balancing question

Our customer wishes to have multiple Oracle Application Servers running Oracle Portal, with load balancing. They would like to have Web Cache collocated with one of these Portal servers, operating as a load balancer for the Portal servers (including the one collocated with Web Cache). Our understanding is that this is not supported, since Web Cache must use the same port number as the destination server it is load balancing, and this is a problem with collocation. The alternative of using mod_oc4j load balancing by OHS is we understand not supported for Portal. The customer does not wish to use external, hardware load balancers, or operating system load balancing. We understand that the solution is to use Web Cache on a dedicated separate server, to load balance the Portal servers. Can you please confirm that, or is collocation possible to avoid the cost of the dedicated Web Cache server.
    thanks,

You are right .. if the client does not want use load balancer you have no other choice.

  • Portal Drive not working with external load balancer

    Hi,
We have a portal cluster and we are using external Load balancer from
Juniper for load balancing the portal cluster. When given the direct
portal URL (Central instance URL or Dialog instance URL), Portal Drive
is able to connect to portal and shows the KM documents properly. But
when given the Load balancer URL, it gives error saying "Can
not connect to host using WebDAV protocol". Load balancer URL works
fine from the browser without any problems. Any help is highly appreciated.
    Helpful points will be rewarded.

    Hi Steve,
For Portal Drive, Windows integrated authentication, client certificates, basic authentication and Kerberos is supported.
(in the default delivery of com.sap.km.cm.docs iview the authentication Scheme is set to basicauthentication - switching that to form based authenticationis not being supportedbywebdav clients).
ALso now Integrated Windows Authentication (NTLM) has been made available with latest patch.
Also read through SAP NOTE 1084683 for further clarifications.

  • Load balancing in EP

    Hi ,
I wanted to know if there are any guides availble which tell me how to do load balancing in portal.
We will be having more than 1400 users logging in simultaneously.
It would be geat if i can get some guidance
SAP R3, BW, SAP SRM will be made available through EP .
    Regards
    Jayesh

    Hi,
you can load balance on multiple levels. The first level is of course everything that is backend related and comes 'after' the portal access.
The portal application itself can be load balanced by setting up multiple dialog instances. This can be done on a single hardware or spread across different boxes.
If you have more than one portal server in your landscape you need a loadbalancing device in front of it to dispatch to the J2EE. You could use SAP web dispatcher for that (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/EN/42/5cfd3b0e59774ee10000000a114084/frameset.htm) or any other loadbalancing device (hard- or software).
Hope that gives some first insights.

Here are few bits of info:
For load balancing for Analytics, that isn't officially supported yet for the UI and Administration components. It might work with sticky sessions from portal-to-analytics but that doesn't get you much. Improving the options there would be a good enhancement request.
For the collector, I think there are two important things to remember. Use broadcast mode. I've never actually seen it in unicast mode, but broadcast definitely works. Also, remember that this is all managed by Portal and Analytics - you don't use your own load balancer between Portal instances and the Analytics Collector instances.
Finally, ALUI Directory is not certified to be load balanced yet. On a separate note, ALUI Directory has a socket leak on Windows due to a bug in the version of Jrockit that ships with it. Upgrading the embedded application server for the ALUI/WCI installation to jrockit-R27.5.0-jdk1.5.0_14 will resolve it.

  • How to load balance serving MP4 files via AMS

    Hey gurus,
We have one centralized storage server that stores videos, Lets call this Server A, we have 4 more servers that we want to use to load the files from Server A to load balance and location balance the loading of files.
Servers B-E are on a private VLAN with Server A; so what we're doing now is mounting Server A on to Servers B-E and serving the files via AMS; this has proved to be quite inefficient.
For Live Streams; we use multi-point publishing to achieve this; is there a way to do this with recorded files?
    Please advise!
    Thanks

  • Web Dispatcher not doing the load balancing on the portal

    Hi Experts
I am having a production issue where the SAP web dispatcher is not doing the load balancing on the portal.
We have ESS/MSS portal with 1 Message server and 2 Application servers. The Web dispatcher is installed on the message server itself. Here is my Web disp profile file
    Profile generated by sapwebdisp bootstrap
    unique instance number
    SAPSYSTEM = 16

    wdisp/enable_j2ee_groups = TRUE
    wdisp/HTTPS/sticky_mask = 255.255.255.255
In my Web dispatcher Admin page, I see all the three application servers, however the requests are going to only 1 App server. We are using ENd to End SSL configuration for the web dispatcher.
We also have a reverse proxy in the landscape and reverse proxy is forwarding all the requests to the Web dispatcher. In Web disp Admin page>Dispatching Module>SSL End to END dispatching, I see only ONE table entry in the dispatching table and it is our Reverse Proxy.
As all the requests are coming from only one source (Reverse proxy), it seems to me that the sap web dispatcher  is forwarding those to the same Application server every time.
    Can anyone please advise ?
I also tried to configure logon group in NWA, the web dispatcher is detecting the logon group and all the app servers in the logon group. It still not doing the load balancing.
I would greatly appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Viny

Vincent, can you please elaborate more ?  Is the web dispatcher not able to recognize stateful and stateless application requests ?
I saw that the procedure for configuring SSL Termination on Web dispatcher is long and complicated and looks like SAP web dispatcher needs to have SSL certificate of its own. As we have no ABAP servers and only Java servers, I can not even create the PSEs using STRUST (as described in SAP help -http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/48/99c388d7c46bb9e10000000a42189d/frameset.htm
We already have SSL certificates for Java App servers.
I suppose there should be a way for web dispatcher to identify the incoming requests and forward to appropriate application servers.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • SSL Setup in a load balanced portal

    Hi,
We are implementing a portal landscape and also we are using a hardware based (Cisco ACE) load balancer for load balancing purposes.
    So the configuration would be:
Portal requests --> Load Balancer --> Portal --> Backend
We are trying to implement SSL until the portal server and I have a question regarding the SSL certificate installation process.
The URL on the load balancer would be for example https://portaltest.mycompany.com which would load balance the requests between the application servers of the portal (https://sapeptest1.mycompany.com:50001/irj/portal and https://sapeptest2.mycompany.com:50001/irj/portal).
So, first thing we will have to do would be to install an SSL certificate (signed by a Trusted CA) on the load balancer with a CN=portaltest.mycompany.com.
I understand that for https to function properly, the host name in the URL we are using to get to the server should match the CN of the SSL certificate installed on the server.
Now, can we install the same certificate (that we put on the LB) on the portal as well?
(This might not work because the server type will be different)
    (or)
Do we need to buy 2 certificates with the same CN and install one each on the LB and portal ?
Can some one please suggest on how to proceed with the SSL setup and certificate installation process ?
    Thank You ,
    Raj

    Raj Kumar wrote:
My question is about how to go about installing the certificates on the LB and on the portal.
If you aren't using web dispatcher, then the details of the installation on the LB will depend on your LB (Cisco? Radware? etc?). I suggest contacting your LB vendor for that.
Sen's link is for SSO, you want the [SSL procedure|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/f1/2de3be0382df45a398d3f9fb86a36a/frameset.htm].
You probably don't need a signed cert on the portal server itself (depending on whether your LB validates the cert). You could just use the default self-signed cert, since users won't be connecting to it directly and so won't be troubled by warnings about untrusted certs: the traffic from the AS would still be encrypted, you would only lose out on the server authentication feature (which you don't need, since again users won't see it).
On the other hand, do you really need SSL on portal server? That adds overhead at both the LB and portal. It's usually sufficient to use HTTP from the LB to the back-end, as long as the servers only allow connections from the LB. I realize you aren't using web dispatcher, but this looks like scenario #3 in [this diagram|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/d8/a922d7f45f11d5996e00508b5d5211/frameset.htm]

  • LOAD BALANCE (CSS) and Portal Port Number based on Instance Number

    Hi,
My doubt is about LOAD BALANCE (CSS) and Portal Port Number based on Instance Number.
I have to install 3 servers machines and 2 servers databases cluster. There will be a HIGH AVAILABILITY environment. There will be a MIGRATION and UPGRADE.
Today there are 2 servers machines in Windows NLB. Today my production Portal is 6 6.20.
Once, I did something for LABORATORY TEST. Migration (6 6.40) and Upgrade (7.0)in two other machines. But they were with Windows NLB. When I did the installation, for each server machine and during the instalation I had to give one Instance Number for each and in result there was a different Port Number for each.
But I accessed both machines throught a virtual url(dns) with a specific port number. And it works!
NOW, with a HARDWARE LOAD BALANCE _ CSS I don't know how to do.
A guy who works with it  tell us that couldn't redirect one Port Number for different port numbers. He couldn't configure the CSS like this.
My question is: Is he write? And if he is, there is a  way to give the same instance number for my 3 new Portal servers machines? Example: 5(02)00.
    Could you understand?
    I need help.
    Regards,
    cheers,
    Nivia

    Nivia,
I have used F5 for load balancing, I am sure you can do the same with CSS. Yes, you can configure a virtual IP on the load balancer with standard ports (80 or 443) and load balancing the traffic to multiple servers with different ports. You can have different ports for each instance.

  • Web Dispatcher - Portal & Backend systems load balancing

    Good Day,
I am currently in the process of setting up a web dispatcher for the Backend systems via the Portal.
I have already installed a web dispatcher to handle the Portal load balancing and this works perfect.
The SAP system landscape will be created using load balancing, currently it is set to Dedicated.
    Question:
Do i change the ITS and WAS settings to point to the web dispatcher or leave them currently pointing to the backend systems?
    ITS = hostname :8000
    WAS = hostname : 8000
    Many thanks,
    Morgan Moodley

    Hi Morgan,
You point them at the web dispatcher.

  • Load Balancing Portal that uses JPDK portlets

We are having the following Portal architecture :
    -Browser
    -Firewall
    -Load Balancers
    -Multiple 9iAS middle-tiers (2)
    -DB Server
We are using Web Providers registered with Portal which calls JPDK portlets.
We have registered the Web Provider url's, but of course had to
enter a URL to point to the location of the provider.xml. If we enter the URL specifying a particular 9iAS middle-tier hostname, all requests for the provider from any of the middle-tiers are routed through the one 9iAS server, which places a heavy load on this server.
Requirement : We want to specify the location of the provider.xml as local to the particular 9iAS server and so call the portlet from the same server, which will spread the load.
What would be the best way to achieve this ?

    Hi,
You can very well provide the URL of 'Load balancer' while registering the WebProvider, provided it meets the following condition :
Condition : For example, your middle-tiers are named 'machineA' & 'machineB'. Your loadbalancer's name being 'loadbalancer'. Say, a user wants to access a file by name 'test.html' which exists in both machineA & machineB and is identical. Let http://machineA/test.html & http://machineB/test.html be the URLS for accessing it.
The user should get the output after specifying the loadbalancer's name in the place of the 'serverA' or serverB.
    Something like, http://loadbalancer/test.html
If the condition is satisified, you can register the webprovider with Loadbalancer's URL.

  • Load balancing from the BI portal

    Hi everybody,
We have a BW system with two application servers.
When we use BEx, the load balancing leads the user to the application server that is used less.
When we use the portal, everything goes over the central server.
Does anybody know how we can set up load balancing from the BI portal ?
    Kind regards,
    Marc van Eijndt

The web dispatcher for your portal should do the load balancing... usually the scenario is the other way round - BEX tends to use the server irrespective of its load and Portal will hit the load balancer and hence lead to better performance ....
