Loadbalancing ldaps on ACE module

Is it possible to configure loadbalancing of ldaps with end-to-end mode (encryption from end to end) on ACE module ?
And if yes, do i have to use a special script for health checking ?

Please correct me if this is wrong or bad design: I have ldaps running just by permitting the port in the ACLs and VIP class. Customer says it works fine.
I'm sure you're aware of the health probe scripts you can get from Cisco (attached). This script defaults to ldap port (386) if none is specified. So you can specify the port under the "probe scripted LDAP_PROBE" config to use ldaps (636). Perhaps you should use both scripted probes together so that if one port is unavailable the server will be taken out of service.

  • Loadbalancing LDAP in ACE?

    Hi there!
Does anyone have experience in loadbalancing ldap services in ACE? Both port 389 and 636.
And do you have a working config that you can provide?
    Regards
    Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
There is no specific configuration required for LDAP on the ACE. The only thing that needs to be taken into account is that no L7 processing is supported for LDAP, so, you will only be able to load-balance at L4
The main effect of this is that, in case you need stickiness, you will be limited to the src-ip option.
For the health-monitoring, as part of the default probe scripts, there is one for LDAP which will check that the server is really able to serve requests. I would suggest you to have a look at it.

  • Cisco ACE Module with Bluecoat Cache Proxy, Transparent and spoofing client IP

    Hello Dears,
I'm trying to implement Cache loadbalancing through Cisco ACE Module.
I have 2 Bluecoat cache proxies, when i do configure transparent proxy without spoofing client IP, everything work properly, but when I enable spoofing client IP (reflect client IP address), clients are not able to access internet, although they are going to cache servers, I can see their sessions.
I'm afraid that I have a problem in the returned traffic PBR.
    can anyone help please.
    Thanks

    Hi Ibrahim
I ahve reviewed the config. The ACE config is all god but I do see some issue with the switch side. If you are doing ip spoofing, then "match ip address" in pbr should be the client ip address. However, what you did is ip address between the ACE and MSFC. Try to configure the test client ip address into the below access-list.
    msfc---vlan 265---ACE--vlan 264----CE farm

I have a simple Serverfarm with two Servers.
But there seems to be some Problems with the Loadbalancing i not understand:
    1) I use Round Robin, but the ACE seems to put me serval times to the same server. I notice this, because i have different content on both servers, also different URLs.
    2) withz the show serverfarm statement the total connects do not increment.

Any Idea what is going on?

what version do you have ?
I would recommend to run the very recent A1.4.
This is something that really should work.

  • Bizarre ACE module behavior

    Hi,
I configured a new serverfarm with leastconns predictor for two servers on our ACE module Version A2(2.3). Probes (show probes XX detail) to the servers are successful and both servers are operational (show serverfarm APPLI detail) but connections are directed only to one server.
When I deactived the server which is receiving the connections (no inservice), the ACE start to direct connection to the second server.
There are several serverfarm, configured the same way, that are Loadbalancing traffic as correctly.
Here is a sample of my config

        nat dynamic 1 vlan 202
        appl-parameter http advanced-options PERSIST
        ssl-proxy server TEST_SSL_PROXY_SERVER
PS : ACE uptime is 291days, could that impact ACE behavior ?
    Thanks for any troubleshooting hints

Looking at this on my phone but it looks like you L7 policy is referencing a sticky server farm that does not exist.
ie TEST_443_STKY_SF is incorrect name for sticky
If that's not it. Then check that the first server actually has a number of conns on it when a new connection is established. Sometimes when both servers have 0 conns - new incoming conns will always go to the first server

  • ACE Module support loadbalance rmi, ajp, jms, etc?

    Hello,
Do you know if ACE Module support balance the follow protocols:
    1. rmis
    2. ajp
    3. jms
    4. IIOP
    5. CORBA
    6. IIOPS
I know that ACE module support http, https and tcp/udp port.
    Best Regards

    Hi Alvaro,
There are no specific handlers in ACE for the protocols listed. RMI over IIOP and majority of CORBA implementations are TCP socket based and typically require persistent (Sticky) assignments to real servers if load-balanced, so generic ACE loadbalancing predictors, probes and sticky features should suffice. If you need to do a deeper inspection you can use the Generic Protocol Parsing, and custom Probe (TCL) capabilities to track content of interest. Same applies for JMS and AJP, although there are different transports for these prototocls (i.e. JMS over HTTP) which may change configuration requirements.
In general, since these protocols are used for stateful application integration, long running transactions, messaging, and data access...and they are very sensitive to object namespace/target references you should detail individual use case requirements and applicability of external application delivery controller based load balancing (i.e. using ACE).
Let me know if this helps or if you need more detail. Thanks. -George

  • Per-ServerFarm SNAT on ACE Module.

    Dear all,
I hace an ACE Module configured in Multiple Routed Contexts.
My cust wants to configure some NAT Feature that prevents the real server IP Address appear outside the ACE. They want that the only IP address outside the ACE will be the Virtual IP Adress (VIP) that represents the serverfarm.
Also, the cust wants that different serverfarms comunicate each other within the same VLAN.
I was reading and the option that acomplish both tasks is Dynamic (PAT) Per-ServerFarm SNAT using the VIP address.
    Is this correct?
    The software version is A2(3,5).
    Thanks a lot!
    David

    Hi David
Could you please calrify and maybe separate tasks you have ?
As I understand you have such tasks for now :
    1) Don't show rserver IPs anywere outside ACE
    2) Servers in the same VLAN should be able to communicate with serverfarm which is located in the same VLAN via VIP
First task is a little bit unclear. I mean - actually you have VIP outiside of ACE and all outiside clients communicate to serverfarm via VIP and don't need to know rserers IPs (e.g. they can even be private and VIP is public, if we're talking about Internet)
Or do you mean that rservers need to communicate with outside world through ACE but you want to NAT these flows too ?
    2) Yes, it's possible. For such configuration you need to create a service policy, with the same VIP and configuration as you have for outside interface and put it on inside interface. The only one key difference is that you need to add NAT statement , because return traffic should go to ACE and as rservers and clients in this case are in the same VLAN, you need to use NAT.
    E.g.
    policy-map multi-match VIP_IN
    class MY-CLASS
    loadb vip ins
    loadb policy MY-L7Policy
    nat 1 dynamic vlan X << - inside interface
    and then on inside interface
    inter vlan X
    nat-pool 1Y.Y.Y.Y netmask 255.255.255.255 pat
In this case it will work in this way : say you have servers in vlan 10. Servers #1 and #2 are rservers in your serverfarms and server #3 wants to connect to serverfarm through VIP. Let's say that vlan 10 has subnet 10.0.0.0/24 and VIP for this serverfarm is 8.8.8.8. When you confiure like I wrote above this will happen :
Server #3 connects to 8.8.8.8, traffic goes to ACE as a gateway, as you have a policy map on inside interface which catches traffic to 8.8.8.8 , ACE will catch it an proceed it. You have a SNAT statement there, so ACE will perform standard loadblanacing and replace source IP with NAT IP (say 10.0.0.100) , thus when server #1 which gets this loadbalanced traffic receives it , it will send return traffic to 10.0.0.100 , thus to ACE.

  • ACE Module not supporting

    Hi,
We have migrated CSM to ACE Module recentlym all the applications are working fine. But one of our real server , Hosting team did NIC Teaming (Active-Active) which was working fine but not with ACE Module (Briding Mode).
My assumtion is because of ACE in Bridge mode all the non-loadbalancing traffic has to go through ACE Module, So we couldnt access the server directly. If ACE is in One-armed mode i think it should be fine.
But with bridge mode do we have any option to make it working.

there is a restriction regarding NIC teaming in active/active mode.
The ACE uses an hardcoded mac-to-IP mapping with ARP. As with active active nic teaming you'll have 2 different mac addresses, the one which is not present in the ARP cache of the ACE is considered as a security violation.

  • ACE Module vs ACE Appliance

    Hello,
What is the difference between ACE Module and ACE Appliance? why the ACE Module is better? or ACE Appliance, what is the advantage between Module and Appliance.
    anyone can explain me?
    Best Regards

In the past Cisco has been shipping two line of Loadbalancing products
First line ( modules dedicated for 6500/7600 chassis ) includes CSM & CSM-S & SSLSM (for ssl offloading)
The other line comprises of appliance based CSS series products.
ACE module is a next generation module replacing CSM modules that fits into 6500/7600 chassis.
It gives you upto 16Gbps throughput (versus CSM's 4Gbps throughput).
ACE appliance is a next gen replacement of CSS line of appliance based products.
CSS appliances were used to come in different Hardware models with varied
performance capacities. ACE appliance is a single hardware with various licenses
used to scale the performance/features.Ace appliance supports upto 4Gbps of throughput.
Previously CSS & CSM code terminologies & command set was different. For example a real server
was termed as "service" in CSS & was called "real" in CSM . Similarly "probe" in CSM was "keepalive"
    in CSS.
With ACE line of products you get the same terminologies & command sets for both
    modules & Appliances.
ACE Appliance & ACE modules are functionality vise coming closer with every new release but
    still there are some differences.
For example following ACE appliance features are not available in ACE module:
Appl optimization (flash forward, Delta Encoding)
    Embedded Device manager
    Http compression
Which one is better than the other really depends on your requirement
From Performance perspective Module give you much higher performance then Appliance.
SO if performance is your criteria the ACE module is better than ACE appliance.(Some performance metrics at the end of the post).
If you are looking for Application optimization & HTTP compression along with Loadbalancing
then it can only be achieved with ACE appliance.
If you are not using 6500/7600 series chassis in your environment then you can only use ACE appliance
(unless you are open to buy module+chassis due to performance requirement).
    Some performance metrics
Ace Appliance supports 1 Million concurrent connections where as Ace Module supports 4 Million.
    Ace Appliance supports 120K L4 conn/sec where as Ace Module supports 380K L4 conn/sec.
    Ace Appliance supports 40K L7 conn/sec where as Ace Module supports 133K L7 conn/sec.
Ace Appliance supports upto 4Gbps throughput where as Ace Module supports 16Gbps throughput .

  • Can ACE module and 4710 appliance work redundant together

    Hi.
I am setting up a testlab for ACE loadbalancing and need to test functionality on both the ACE module and the 4710 appliance.
Can one of each of these two be set up redundant together with full functionality? Or do I have to test redundancy for 2x ACE modules and 2x 4710 appliances seperate?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    It won't work.
The code checks if the devices are the same during the HA negotiation.
If you do a 'show ft peer detail' you should see at the end :
    SRG Compatibility            : WARM_COMPATIBLE
    License Compatibility        : INCOMPATIBLE
These 2 entries indicate if the box are compatible to run HA between each other.
The version is checked and the license.
Both would be different between an ACE module and ACE appliance.

  • ACE module, TLS and smtp

    Hello,
On a ACE module running software version ACE2(1.0), I have defined a virtual smtp server that is load-balanced to a serverfarm containing 2 SMTP servers. Normal SMTP connexions on port 25 work fine. SMTPS connexions to port 465 of a second vserver also work fine: SSL termination occurs at the ACE module and SMTP connexions to the real servers are in clear text on port 25. But I am having problems with TLS.
If a client connecting to port 25 of the first vserver tries to negotiate TLS, it works but it's the real server that handles TLS encryption. This is normal behavior - but the certificate has to be installed on each of the real servers. I would like the ACE module to handle TLS (it's supported according to the documentation). That way the certificate would only have to be installed on the ACE module.
So I tried to setup a third vserver on port 587 with the same "proxy-service" as the second vserver used for SSL. If a client connects to port 587 of the vserver via TLS, we only see the 3-way handshake between the client and the vserver, then a pause of a few seconds, then a FIN from the client and finally an ACK and a RESET from the vserver.
There are absolutely no lines in the log that could help me find out what's happening.
I found the "debug ssl" command in the documentation but I don't know how to use it - I entered the command and nothing happened; I don't know where the debugging information goes. This is probably why there's a warning that says that "The ACE debug commands are intended for use by trained Cisco personnel only."...
So my questions are: why is TLS not working? How can I find out why it's not working? Where does the "debug" information go when we use the "debug" commands?
Thanks a lot for any help you can give me!
    Regards,
    Marc.

SMTP over TLS is not supported in ACE currently.
SMTP doesnt use SSL/TLS simply as a secure transport like LDAP, IMAP, POP, HTTP.
In case of SMTP client needs to open a new conn.
So ACE or for that matter any other SMTP relay device needs to terminate conn, look in to the SMTP pkts and punch hole according to the new client conns.

  • A problem with ACL in the class-map on the ACE module

                      Hi all,
I configured the following on the ACE module:
    object-group network test
      host 192.168.1.21
      host 192.168.1.22
      host 192.168.1.23
    object-group service port
      tcp eq www
      tcp eq 8080
    access-list T line 8 extended permit object-group port object-group test any
I tried to configure a class-map for matching this ACL:
    ACE-4710-2/Lab-OPT-11(config)# class-map match-any TEST_C
    ACE-4710-2/Lab-OPT-11(config-cmap)# match access-list T
Error: Cannot associate acl having object-group ACEs in class-map.
So couldn't I  configure the class-map by using ACL with object-groups involved? Is it the bug or the normal behaviour? Because the customer uses object-groups in ACLs and he has to configure ACL without object-groups for the traffic classification. It is horrible.
    Thank you
    Roman

    Hi Roman,
I'm afraid it's the expected behavior. You cannot use an ACL with object-groups inside a class-map.
