Locking problem w/ INSERT..SELECT using sequences.

I have a scenario where an INSERT..SELECT statement that includes incrementing a sequence value is causing Exclusive DX locks on the SYS.I_SEQ1 index and the SYS.RESOURCE_COST$ table. When the statement is executing from within a COM+ application using distributed transactions the behavior is exhibited. If the same statement is executed from SQLPlus these locks are not acquired. The statement is similar to:
insert into table1 ( pkey, column2)
select pkey_seq.nextval, value2
from table2;
Anyone have any idea why this behavior is seen in a distributed transaction?
Thanks,
Sam

Hi Ari,
Thanks for the tip. I noticed that approach in earlier posts, but these people were using Oracle 9 and below. The feature I am trying to use is a JDBC 3.0 feature and I believe was introduced in recent JDBC drivers (10.1.0).
I suspect the driver inserts a RETURNING clause anyway. I got this impression from this post (mid-way down the first paragraph):
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-jdbc/2003-05/msg00040.php
Although this post is about to postgresql's JDBC driver, I guess the Oracle driver would probably do a similar thing? If so, then the problem I am having could be that the final SQL (my SQL + inserted RETURNING clause) is invalid.
Anyway, I don't have a problem with this anymore because I changed my design (for the better) and I don't have to do the insert select statement.
Regards,
Simon.

  • Problem with "Insert" and "Overwrite Sequence Content"

    I'm working with XDCAM footage. I like to take all the individual clips recorded on the XDCAM disc, and after getting them into FCP, taking them and putting them all in a sequence in FCP, then using that sequence as the source in the Viewer. This allows for quick scanning of all the clips, much as is it were a digitized tape.
    I recently found the "Insert Sequence Content" and "Overwrite Sequence Content" commands in FCP, and like them in that they actually put the individual clips into my project timeline, and not just the combined sequence (which looks more or less like a nest when dropped into my project sequence).
    Here's the problem: When I put IN and OUT points in the timeline, and "Insert or Overwrite Sequence Content" using the sequence containing all the clips, the video tends to be contained to between the IN and OUT points I set in the TIMELINE, but the audio tracks tend to expand past the OUT point I set in the TIMELINE, and I can't figure out why, or how to get around this.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    If you're inserting or overwriting, you're basically pasting the content that you've chosen. I wouldn't think the out point would be recognized, or even wanted. If you copied 5 minutes of clips and inserted it into a sequence with a 4 minute in/out point duration, do you want to only have the first 4 minutes inserted into the sequence? If you only place an in point, it will insert all the clips, starting at that point, and it will take up as much time as the clip content's duration.
    Am I missing something here?

  • Big problem with a select using remote database

    Hi Guy.
    I have a big problem with a simple query, but this is a scenario.
    Actuallly I'm in Alexandria - Egypt with a server with Oracle 10.2.0.4 database 32 bit on linux Red Hat as 4.8. the server can connect to another database oracle but 9.2.0.6 installed on Red Hat As 4.5 placed in Milano Italy . Ttwo networks are connected via two adsl cisco router with firewall and Vpn functions. In Egypt there isn't a very good adsl.
    In Alexandria, I'm trying to connect to database in Italy with sqlplus. The sqlplus connected I write.. select * from addetti and all work fine.
    My problem is that when I try to make the same select on a table with many columns oracle database kill me a session.
    My table (ic_lav) is long 174 colums 1924 byte for row. Well when I write a query with select * from ic_lav all oracle close my session.
    So I began to change my query I start to
    select field1 from ic_lav... and work
    select field1,field2,field3,..........field50 from ic_lav and work
    select field1,field2,field3,..........field70 from ic_lav and doesn't work
    the select work with 68 columns
    problem: the query with more then 1064 byte for row doesn't work.
    I've tryed with anoter big table with the same problem, but the select fwork with 65 columns...
    Iit is obvious that there is any problem with the limit of the query.
    The same query (select * from ic_lav) in localMilano)l work fine.
    The same query (select * from ic_lav) in vpn with a better adsl line and openvpn software (NO CISCO firewall) WORK FINE.
    The same query connectetd in Milano with a vpn make with analogic modem and remote access by windows work fine.
    the query (make on my laptop connectet with vpn by cisco doesn't work.
    In cisco firewall we haven't any error (cisco man tell me so)
    on database 9 I found :

    Current SQL statement for this session:

    but I don't understand why the lost connection problem (bug 3816595 A processstate dump is produced for a lost connection (12152) ) is caused by len of row
    Anybody have some idea ?
    Thank you

    My table (ic_lav) is long 174 colums 1924 byte for row. Well when I write a query with select * from ic_lav all oracle close my session.Do you get any error?
    If the query length is a problem, you could create a view and query the view instead to see if this problem is resolved.

  • Windows 8.1 having problems with pinter selection using Elements 13.

    I am running Windows 8.1 with Elements 13 and am having problems with PRINT. If I select a printer from the PRINTER menu, Elements recognizes the change of selection, allows me to modify the printer's specific setting and, then, when I PRINT seems to not recognize the selected printer and print of whatever was set as the original printer. Then, I delete the "original" printer in Windows 8.1 and attempt to print again with the same general result except I receive a Printer Not Found error from Windows.
    How do I modify the "original" printer setting (seems to be associated with the file)? Note the "original" printer is not the default printer.

    Hatstead,
    Thank you.
    Yes, all of the print drivers are up to date (re-verified last evening).
    Yes, I can print and select the printer as normal for all of the standard applications I use (Visio, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, direct print from file (Explorer)).
    I shortened the printer names from the standard Microsoft convention (based on some of the BOG comments). There was no change.  In fact after the test sequence noted in #5, I re-implemented the "name shortening" yet again (shorter yet). I launched Elements and ran into the same messages noted in #5 (obviously, the "stored" printer did not exist). Yet after I went through the printer selection process (again as in #5) and, after a lag time, Elements redirected the print job what was the "stored" printer which was renamed....I do not know how Elements associated the deleted "Stored" printer with its old name with the newly named printer since no other application could (I checked).
    I have closed and restarted the PC numerous times.
    I have deleted all of the printers except the one I wanted to use for the specific print job. In this case, Elements came back with a message it could not access the "stored" printer. I then selected the correct printer, Elements acted like it was allowing to set up the selected printer with the specifics of the print job, and, then when I went to print, Elements again tried to redirect the print job to the "stored" printer (even though it did not exist).
    The target printer is a "local" printer (USB connected). The apparent "Stored" printer is a network printer. So, I deleted the PC which has the "Stored" printer from the network (actually not only deleted it from the devices on my PC but literally shut the PC down and disconnected it from the network (two different test)) to no avail (still got the test results in #5).
    Yes, I have attempted to print from the Editor (my normal mode) and from Organizer.
    I have copied, open a new file and, then, pasted the image I wanted to print to no avail.
    Is the a "stored" printer associated with the file or with Elements? If so, how to I modify (or dis-associate)?
    Again, thank you.

    Odi Procedures are mainly meant for DML execution..A SELECT query there holds little or no value in my opinion..
    Select queries are only usable in Command on Source and there the general application of that is to use those values returned by the SELECT query on Command Source as a input to the Command/Query/Statement/Java or Jython block at the Command on Target Tab in a one by one iterative manner.
    Lets say your command on source returns 5 rows..So your command on target is executed 5 times and you can use the attributes of these rows as inputs to your command on target in each iteration .. It works like an Internal Cursor

  • Problem With Insert statement using field symbols with unicode enabled

    I was writng a function module for dyanamic operations on the table. We are using the field symbols, function module is unicode enabled.
    Assign statements are working fine, with which we created work are <fs_wa_header> and internal table <fs_tb_item> dynamically based on the table name (IM_TB_HENAME) which we get as import parameter.
    we have query which is giving us dump.
    INSERT  (IM_TB_HENAME)  FROM <FS_WA_HEADER>.

    Hi
    INSERT (IM_TB_HENAME) FROM <FS_WA_HEADER> is good for inserting a line in the database, so IM_TB_HENAME has to have the name of dictionary table.
    U should write:
    INSERT  <FS_WA_HEADER> INTO (IM_TB_HENAME).
    But I believe you can't use the variable IM_TB_HENAME, you should use another field-symbols:
    ASSIGN (IM_TB_HNAME) TO <FS_TB_ITEM>.
    INSERT  <FS_WA_HEADER> INTO <FS_TB_ITEM>.

    total        2      0.00       0.10         10         27        136          25So I'm struggling to understand why the performance on the 10.2.0.4 RAC system is so much worse for this query, and why it's doing so many gets. Suggestions, thoughts, ideas welcomed.
    I've verified system level things - CPUs weren't/aren't max'd out, no significant paging/swapping activity, run queue not long. AWR report for the time period shows nothing unusual.
    further info on the objects concerned:
    query source table :
    WF_Item_Attributes_PK : unique index on Item_Type, Name. Index has 144 blocks, non-partitioned
    WF_Item_Attributes tbl : non-partitioned, 160 blocks
    insert destination table:
    WF_Item_Attribute_Values:
    range partitioned on Item_Type, and hash sub-partitioned on Item_Key
    both executions of the insert hit the partition with the most data : 127,691 blocks total ; 8 sub-partitions with 15,896 to 16,055 blocks per sub-partition.
    WF_Item_Attribute_Values_PK : unique index on columns Item_Type, Item_Key, Name. Range/hash partitioned as per table.
    Bind values:
    exe #1 : Item_Type (:B1) = OEOH, Item_Key (:B2) = 1048671
    exe #2 : Item_Type (:B1) = OEOL, Item_Key (:B2) = 4253168
    number of rows in WF_Item_Attribute_Values for Item_Type = OEOH : 1132587
    number of rows in WF_Item_Attribute_Values for Item_Type = OEOL : 18763670
    The non-RAC 10.2.0.3 test system (clone of Production from last night) has higher row counts for these 2.
    thanks and regards

    hi Sven,
    Thanks for your input.
    1) I guess so, but I haven't lifted the lid to delve inside the form as to which one. I don't think it's the cause though, as I got poor performance running the insert statement with my own value (same statement, using my own bind value).
    2) In every execution plan I've seen, checked, re-checked, it uses a range scan on the primary key. It is the most efficient I think, but the source table is small in any case - table 160 blocks, PK index 144 blocks. So I think it's the partitioned destination table that's the problem - but we only see this issue on the 10.2.0.4 pre-production (RAC) system. The 10.2.0.3 (RAC) Production system doesn't have it. This is why it's so puzzling to me - the source table read is fast, and does few gets.
    3) table storage details below - the Item_Types being used were 'OEOH' (fast execution) and 'OEOL' (slow execution). Both hit partition WF_ITEM49, hence I've only expanded the subpartition info for that one (there are over 600 sub-partitions).

  • Toplink 11.1.1.1.0 Locking problem during update using ServerSession

    Hi,
    I m using toplink as ORM tool in my project. I have a scenario wherein I m using ServerSession and acquiring UnitOfWork. I do locking on the orm entity using following code.
    ExpressionBuilder builder = new ExpressionBuilder();
         Expression expr = builder.get("id").equal(id);
         Employee employee = (Employee )uow.readObject(Employee .class, expr);
    try {
              uow.refreshAndLockObject(employee, ObjectLevelReadQuery.LOCK_NOWAIT);
         } catch (Exception e){
              throw new LockedException(); //Custom exception
    The execution fails with the following error details.

    Hi Chris,
    Yes you are right, databasePlatform is set in the sessions.xml. However I have created two sessions.xml one for database session and the other for server session. In both the cases the file content is same except for session name.

  • Locking problem in BPS solution not getting solved  using RSPLSE. SEM_BPS_S

    Can anyone tell me exactly what "rsplse" offers to solve locking in BPS?
    We have made correct selection of characteristics (in our case "costcentre" infoobject) in tab "Lock characteristics" , but still when two people are trying to access (write) data in the same transactional cube against the different cost centres, the system is throwing an error message Cube “zIC_ccp” is locked by username.  (Or if a single person is using the two packages simultaneously using  two web sessions , he is getting the same error. )
    Our assessment is that he should not be facing this locking problem because cost centres here are acting as a “key” to different selection as configured in “rsplse”.
    Can anyone tell me how to use parameter SEM_BPS_SAVE_UNLOCK. I want to know t. code and other t . code and other details to execute SEM_BPS_SAVE_UNLOCK.

    Hi,
    Please check the OSS note 635244.
      From the OSS note :
    <b> Notes on SET/GET parameters SEM_BPS_NO_LOCK, SEM_BPS_SAVE_UNLOCK :</b>
    These two parameters have nothing to do with the problem described above. They are only designed to facilitate the Customizing process, if users carry out Customizing in t ransaction BPS0 within a project.
    <b>SEM_BPS_NO_LOCK:</b> This parameter has the effect that transaction data is not locked at all. Never use this parameter in a production system. As of Support Package 14 for Release 3.1B, parameter SEM_BPS_NO_LOCK is released by an additional switch in table upc_dark2: For this purpose you have to maintain a record with param = ENABLE_NO_LOCK and value = X in table upc_dark2. Only then the system includes parameter SEM_BPS_NO_LOCK. The parameter can then be useful if you want to test functions or the manual planning with 'test data' in Customizing.
    <b>SEM_BPS_SAVE_UNLOCK</b>: This parameter only works in transaction BPS0; it has the effect that the system unlocks data (if possible) after it has been saved. Therefore, the system only simulates an exit and reentry in transaction BPS0 with the last active detail application. Therefore, the above parameter can be helpful if many people work on Customizing in transaction BPS0, because objects can be unlocked earlier.
    Regards,
    Siva.

  • ACR locking up i7 processor when using selective adjustments brush

    I hit a strange problem last night that I've not previoulsy encountered with ACR, which is normally fast and responsive on my PC.
    I'm running CS5 on an i7 860 with 8GB RAM and a Radeon 5850 graphics card on Windows 7 64-bit.
    I'd previoulsy made a pretty large mask using the adjustment brush with an 8.5MB raw file. I say large as it was intended to significantly darken the background of the photo; it covered perhaps as much as two thirds of the image (not something I'd normally need to do) and the adjustment was set to darken by around -2 stops of exposure. I'd set up the mask a couple of days ago, but went back in last night to tweak it as some of the edges were a bit too abrupt in the way they transitioned from the black background to the subject of the photo. When I first set it up, it didn't seem to cause any issues other than slower loading of the file (but I expected this as it will of course be having to make a lot of ajustments to the image preview due to my heavy adjustment brush use).
    Working on it last night, ACR slowed to an absolute crawl. Even zooming in could take say 30 seconds to move from 50% view to 100%. Likewise, panning around the image when zoomed in was exceptionally slow. I have that standard Windows gadget running on the desktop that gives an indication of memory and processor use, and I was astounded to see that it was running the processor at 100% (I could also hear the fan kicking in to overdrive)! In all my time using CS4 and CS5 on this PC, it's never got to that level before, including when carrying out activities such stitching around 40 images together in Photoshop, working with 3GB PSB files, etc. This was after all a single raw file. I perceviered and managed to complete the edit. When I closed the file down I went back to Bridge and tried to open another file, and again the PC locked up at 100% processor use. I noticed that Bridge was still trying to generate a preview for the troublesome image I'd completed, and when it finally managed to finish this things went back to normal speed - I could for example open multiple raw files into ACR without any issues.
    I wonder if anyone else has experienced this kind of issue? Perhaps the adjustment brush can really push a PC if used heavily? Maybe I need to tweak some settings somewhere? I was using the 64-bit ACR launched from PS rather than from Bridge, and the only other application running was Bridge (as I would normally work). I'd have thought an i7 with a decent amount of memory could handle a single raw file, even with extensive modifications being applied.
    Be very interested to hear what others think.
    M

    Many thanks for your reply.
    I have previoulsy spent quite some time looking at the various recommendations Adobe give for performance and I think I've got my PC set up pretty well in respect of this. Having said that, I haven't adjusted any of the Windows virtual memory settings, so I might take a look at that later on. However, I'm not convinved this is the root cause of the problem: my memory use wasn't at 100% (just the processor), and as it was just one raw file on an 8GB system, I can't see how it could max out in the way it did... But then I'm not a computer expert either...
    (Oh, you linked to the Mac performance page! Threw me for a minute there! )

  • Is there a way to select multiple sequences and batch export them using the same settings in CS6?

    I am a current Final Cut Pro7 user and looking to switch over to Premiere Pro CS6.  We edit approx. 100 short (15 sec.) videos daily, and then select them all at the end of the day and batch export them over night using the same export recipe for all. I have having trouble finding an easy way to do this in Premiere pro CS6, as command +E is grayed out if i select more than one sequence at a time.
    so far, it appears that i have to select each video individually and manually set encoding recipe and export location for each....  Not only would this be terribly time consuming, but it leaves a lot of room for error and missed videos.  I thought i would be able to send all of the sequences to Adobe Media Encoder,  but i dont see that option either.
    Any suggestions/
    thanks!

    Open Media Encoder and add your Sequences:
    File > Add Premiere Pro Sequence
    Navigate to your Premiere Project and select it in the list.
    You can then select multiple Sequences from the Project (Ctrl+Click)
    and load them all at once into Media Encoder and apply
    the same encoding preset to all Sequences at the same time.

    Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
    and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
    If those don't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of compressed air. Chances are that your drive has failed, join the club it's not all that uncommon. You can either have it replaced or purchase an inexpensive external drive. Don't buy the cute little Apple USB Superdrive, it won't work on macs with internal drives working or not.

    Hi Andy,
    Sorry, forgot to post the Source that's use by both AL1.1.4 and AL2.0.1.

    end;
    it's failing during the insert?
    Yes, it failed during insert using AL2.0.1.
    So the above statement produces the following error message:
    The symbol "" was ignored.
    ORA-06550: line 2, column 74:
    PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "" when expecting one of the following:

    <an identifier> <a double-quoted delimited-idThis suggests to me that an unprintable character (notice how there is nothing between the double quotes - "") has worked its way into your PL/SQL Handler. Note how the error is reported to be a column 74 on line 2, yet line 2 of the above block should only have 58 characters, so at a pure guess somehow there's extra whitespace on line 2, that is confusing the PL/SQL compiler, I suggest re-typing the PL/SQL handler manually and seeing if that cures the problem.
