Locking Video/audio tracks

I just purchased a new imac and am using imovie08 and am trying to edit (2) video clips together but only use the audio from (1) clip constant throughout my project. Is there a way of doing this?
Thanks,
Mike

Is there a way of doing this?
Yes, if the joining of files is not too complex. If they are sequential, simply add one file to the "Project" window after the other, extract ("Command-Shift-Drag") the audio you want to the "Project" window, adjust in/out points as needed and turn down the volume of the original embedded sound tracks. If one file is to be set within the other, then "cut out" the same number of frames from one movie as you intend to insert from the other and then extract, pin, and adjust audio as above.

Is there a template already written for a script?
    Thanks much,
    Chuck

Hi - welcome to the discussions.
You don't need to script it if all you want to do is repeat the track over and over. All you do is set the end jump of the track to go to the same track.
However, if you want to repeat just a short audio clip over and over whilst a longer video plays then what you do is add the audio repeatedly to the track until you get to the end of the video. You can't set the audio up differently to the video, you have to play both at the same time.

  • Stacking Video & Audio Tracks

In Premiere Elements 7 is it possible to stack all of the Video tracks together and all of the Audio track together. I know I can simply delete unused tracks however I would like to be able to stack the video and audio separately as you can with other edits applications.
    Reagrds,
    Stewie

    Stewie,
Steve taught me something with his reply. I did not know you could do even that. I also did not ever use PE3, but from the descriptions I've read, and images I've seen, its Timeline layout was a bit more like PrP's - the way I'm used to working.
With Steve's suggestion, I could approximate the PrP "look" a bit, and as I usually edit all of my visuals first, and then do my Audio work later, it would go along way towards getting me what I am used to, just not at the same time on the same Timeline view.
I must say that most of the users of PE4, and later, really appreciate the newer look, as did most reviewers, when PE4 came out. Most hated the "antiquated" look of the previous versions and also the look of PrP. You and I are in the minority.
As for your crashes with PrP, have you posted to the PrP fora yet? If you do, please list your equipment, describe your Project, especially your Assets (really go into detail on the Assets - G-Spot is good for giving all necessary info), and any error messages, plus a complete description of the crashes, i.e. do they lock the program, cause it to shut down or bring the whole system to its knees? The people on that forum will greatly appreciate all of the info that you can give. The link is for general PrP, but there are version-specific sub-fora. Choose the appropriate one:

  • Sync Lock for Audio Tracks

I usually have a lot of video and audio tracks going at the same time and run PP CS4.
I have read and watched many video tutorials and one thing I read gave me the impression that with CS4, if I had sync lock set for all my video AND audio tracks, it would keep all my audio tracks in sync with my video when I edit the video or add video transitions.
However I just performed an edit that moved a section of my original video and audio on the timline, and my second and third audio tracks just stayed right where they were and of course then were out of sync which I had to re-sync manually.
Did I miss something in the explanation or do I have a setting wrong?
For example if an edit on the original video and audio moved that timeline 30 seconds, I would want my audio track 2 and 3 move similarly which is what sync lock is supposed to do.
If I could get this to work, it would help my editing immensely.
    Thanks,
    BJBBJB1

I found this Adobe video that helped get sync lock and audio through my head that I thought I would post in case someone else runs into this thread needing help:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/digital-video/mapping-source-tracks-to-target-tracks
Near the very end is when they finally get to it.  So clearly sync lock would work for insert editing, etc.
However for my original issue of changing track lengths to say accomodate handles, or other "manual" clip length changes made once the clips are on the timeline, it appears that the group command is the way to go as Harm suggested.  Sync lock does nothing for me in regard to changing clip lengths once on the timeline.  Only when inserting clips.
Just like with Photoshop many years ago, and my last NLE, clearly learning a good workflow for PP will serve me well in the future.  Clearly you want to make sure any clips you put on the timeline already have "handles" and also, if extensive length changes are needed, do that before you have multiple video and audio tracks piled up!
Thanks to all for the help!

  • Keyboard shortcut for Video/Audio track destination?

Is there a keyboard short that will allow me to toggle the Video and audio track when adding clips to the sequence? versus having to mouse click on the icon to "link" or "unlink"?

    System Preferences>Keyboard.
Check F keys on for use in applications.

  • Video / audio tracks assigned to separate track # (PRE 7.0)

When dragging clips into the timeline video and audio is assigned to the same track #. During the project work (moving a clip to another track) it happended that video and audio got assigned to different track # (e.g. video track #4 and audio track #9), but still linked. Until now I did not find any way to get them back into track #.
    Any help is appreciated.

This key happen if you press the wrong key as you move your tracks around.
Without knowing any real details about the clip -- what format it is, what format your project is set up for, etc. -- it's hard to give specific advice. But the easiest thing might be to delete the clip and re-add it to your timeline.
The audio and video for a clip won't separate unless you select the option for them to do so.

  • Video/Audio Tracks -

I imported 2 videos files with audio files - I want to put each video on its own track, that's no problem but the audio tracks want to share the same track.   Does anyone have a solution to this problem.   Thanks,

Are you in the right forum? This is for OnLocation and your question gives the impression that it may be best answered in the Premiere forum.

  • Video & Audio Tracks are not connected

For some reason my video and audio tracks are no longer conneted. It used to be when I would click on the video track that the 2 audio tracks that match it would also be highlighted so I could move them together, trim them together, etc. but for some reason now all my video clips that I put on the timeline are seperate (1 video and 2 audio) so I have to highlight all 3 lines to have them stay together, and it will not let me trim or apply transitions to all 3 at the same time. Is there a setting for this?

Make sure the "Link" button is on-- it's the small chain at the top right of the timeline, next to snapping. Once turned on, though, your clips already on the timeline may still lack cohesion; if so, select a video clip and the audio clip(s) that you want to link, and go Modify>Link.

  • Video clip goes to different Timeline Video/Audio tracks

    Premiere Pro CS5
When I move a clip to Timeline Video Track 1 the audio goes to Audio Track 4.
    What might be happening?
I recorded the clip with Sony HDR CX560V
And I chose sequence preset AVCHD 1080i30 (60i)  (I did this because Sony PMB shows the clip with a frame rate of 60i)

    Thank you guys!!!
One other question.  If I add background music to my clip does it matter if it's stereo and falls into a lower track?  That is:
clip video = video track 1
clip audio = audio track 4
    music = audio track 1
(By the way Ann, the guy on the link you sent me is awesome.  Very clear explanation and right to the point.)

  • Change video audio tracks in the n900 standard pla...

Anybody knows if It's possible to change into the two audio tracks of a divx video using the standard video player of the n900?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You'll need to register an account on bugs.maemo.org first, but after that you can search and create bug reports. Give a much information as possible. Remember to log the bug under the right application (in this case, the media player would probably do)
After that someone will pick it up and you should get some feed back. Other people with the same problem can follow your bug too..
I recently logged a bug about firmware availability in the UK and it has been solved/fixed.. so some bugs do get attention!

  • Losing audio when merging separate video & audio tracks. (fcp 5.14)

I am merging separate audio and video tracks. When I go to Modify >Merge, the resultant merged clip is missing the last 25% of the audio track. So it plays correctly and is synched correctly, but the audio just disappears 75% into the video. This shouldn't be the case as the audio takes are all longer than the video takes.
When I pull the audio track into the sequence and sync it up to the video track in the sequence editor, it plays fine. I'm not sure what could be causing this problem, as it has only cropped recently. I've had no problems merging clips by using Modify > Merge before. I tried changing the audio from 44.1 khz to 48.0 khz and back again, but i run into the same problem in both.

Try this ridiculous workaround. I don't know why it works this way.
These "---" are the extra steps.
To get a good merged subclip.
Open the audio file and add the 'in point' to the slate.
---Drag audio clip to the timeline.
---Drag the audio clip from the timeline to the browser window.
    Merge with video.
Viola. Audio won't drop out. But the waveforms are completely off with the sound.
Next step is to open the merged clips and Make Subclip so you don't have that extra media in the beginning and end. And the waveform seem normal.

  • Selecting Target Video/Audio track

I apologize if there is already a forum for this question but I was wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut function to change which video track is the target track. I know all the shortcuts for 'arming' the target, or sequence tracks and/or the source video, I'm curious though if there is a way (something like shift+alt+7 (or whatever your track hotkey is)) so that you can select the track that source video will overlay or insert onto without having to use the mouse to select it the track (either by dragging or right-clicking)
Perhaps if not directly selecting a track there is a command that is 'select next track' or 'select previous track'? I've tried looking for it in the keyboard shortcuts menu and can't quite seem to figure it out.
I use a custom layout that is a bit of a mix between the Avid standard and Premiere 5.0 standard. It would be awesome if someone could direct me to the shortcut menu and/or command(s) I'm looking for so that I can set it myself. Or else just let me know that I'm trying to bark up a tree that doesn't actually exist.
    Thanks!

You're absolutely right, I do the same thing. But for it to actually go on Video 2 and Audio 3, not only do those Sequence tracks need to be toggled they also have to be set as Source Video and Source Audio 3 (or whichever source Audio you want) on the far left area of the timeline panel. If the Source Video is set on Sequence Video 1, your video will not appear, but rather an erase occurs on Sequence Video 2 the length of video set by your In and Out in the Source monitor and, if Sequence Video 1 is toggled that is where the video will appear. This is how you can both delete video on one track and place video on another at the same time.
If however you have dragged the Source Video 'icon' up to Sequence Video 2 (or right clicked on Sequence video 2 on the far right and selected 'Set as Source Video) your Video will now appear on the track you desire.
Similarly, whichever Source Audio track is assigned to Sequence Audio Track 3 is the Source Audio which will be placed on Sequence Audio Track 3.
Pretend that you have a  LAV Mic in Audio 1 of your Source Footage and a Shoe Mic on Audio 3 of your source footage, which sounds bad. For whatever reason, you want that Lav mic to be placed on Sequence Audio Track 3. You must set the Source Audio 1 to Sequence Audio 3 on your timeline.
So my question is: Is there a way to move which Sequence Video Track is assigned as the Source Video with keystrokes.
If this still isn't clear I might just make a video when I get home of what I mean. I apologize for any lack of clarity in my querry

    Hi,
Error 7 is when a router or the connection to the router is broken in some way.
Some devices have features such as Denial Of Service protection (DoS) that cut a particular Internet Port when it thinks too much data is coming (Presuming it is an attack.)
iChat 5 in Leopard is not capped by the System Preferences > Quicktime Streaming speed (which we used to suggest was set at 1.5Mbps)
It now sees your whole Connection speed and your Upload may be much faster than this.
Your Download is likely to be much faster. However iChat will tend to operate at the lower figure of your Upload.
    DoS features are threshold based.
You may now be bumping in to this Threshold where you were not before.
SPI (Stateful packet Inspection) does a different job but has the same effect when it is overloaded by the speed of the data.
If you have either of these features, turn them Off (Disable them)

  • Is it possible to lock an audio track in "record enabled" mode?

Here's how i write... i set up a drum loop to play for around 20 minutes, then I rec-enable one audio track to record vocals, and then finally, I skip around among hundreds of different midi tracks.
I just hit the down arrow button, and scroll through dozens and dozens of midi tracks. I quickly hit the keyboard to listen to the sounds. If i like a particular sound, i just want to hit record, and instantly record my vocals along with the midi performance.
Unfortunately, when i hit record, the vocal/audio track doesn't record. Right at the moment when i find an inspiring sound and hit record, the vocals just don't record.
I'm forced to scroll miles up the arrange window, to find
the vocal audio track. It's still blinking the red "rec" button, but this is misleading. It's not actually record enabled. I have to hold down shift, hit it once to turn it off, then hit it again to re-activate record function.
Only then can i record the midi AND vocals.
What I want and need is sooooooo simple to offer as a function, yet totally ruinous to my creative flow if it's not possible. (I used to do this easily on the far inferior
    Cubase VST 5.1, OS 9)
Is there a way to record enable an audio track, so that,
until I specifically disable the record function, it's
ALWAYS ready to record the second I hit the record button?
Even after I've been hitting the down arrow to audition
    various midi channels?
    MacPro 3ghz, 8 gig RAM, 3 raptor drives   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Logic 7.2.3, Kontakt 2 soft-sampler, RME 400

I tried to build screensets like you suggested. If I could
get this to work, I think it would be a great solution, but
    I'm having serious problems.
I opened a separate mixer, with just the single vocal/audio
    track showing.
Then I opened the main mixer, which has all the faders.
If I record-enable a midi track, and then hit the record-enable button on the audio track, the midi track becomes un-enabled. Incredibly frustrating.
The only way I've been able to do it has been to record-enable the vocal track, and then start recording.
Only if Logic is actually recording, can i then record-enable the midi track without deactivating the audio
    track.
A big problem is, that when i click to record enable the
vocal track, the arrange window jumps all the way up to the
top, where the audio track is. THen i'm forced to travel
down, to re-find the midi track.
You mentioned in your post that the mixer needs to be
"unlinked". HOw is this done? Will it be possible for
me to click on the record-enable button on the mixer's audio track without the arrange window jumping to that track?

  • Although Video & Audio tracks the same length, Video slowly drifts faster than audio, progressively

What's Up With That?  I have other projects from same source that don't behave like this.
Source video is from Livestream HD-500 Recording of an Awards Show last weekend.
    Type: AVI Movie
    File Size: 107.9 GB
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 30.00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 16 bit - Mono
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Mono
    Total Duration: 02:29:40:22
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0

I'd wager that either the clip's frame rate is variable, which spells trouble, or you need to use Interpret Footage to tweak the frame rate, possibly to 29.97.
To check whether the frame rate is constant or variable, drop the clip into MediaInfo and in the Tree view look under Video. I think the operative property is called Frame Rate Type.
Do you see this problem in Source Monitor or only in the Program Monitor?
