Logic and Audio Desk

I have been using Motu traveler with PC for couple of years...just seen the light and got a mac with Logic Studio - it has just dawned on me that Motu Traveler came with Audio Desk software that I ignored coz I was on a PC......now Logic is probably fine but I was wonering whether Audio Desk has any use in my setup?? Is Logic better anyway or thare there certain aspects of Audio Desk that are great and should be used in conjunction with Logic or are there parts of project that could be better run with Audio desk etc.....I have no experience with Audio desk so any experiences would be good........ta

yes I have some time off work now so am going through the David Nahmani and David Dvorin books - definte learn Logic and use it first and foremost.
Just wondering whether there is anything that Audio Desk does a lot better?!?!
Should I do everything in Logic or is Audio Desk good for recrding audio and importing to logic or not worth it and record direct tologic...is audio desk better for mixing....probably not and I should ignore it but just wondering if it has a use or just redundant now that I have Logic Pro 8.

  • Logic and audio interface issues. help!

    Hey guys
I recently bought a small budget recording studio, My first one so bare with the newbie questions and I'm having diffucties with the setup I believe.
I connected my midi keyboard to my computer that had Midi in/out from the keyboard via USB Midi interface to the computer. That was all cool. The computer was seeing it and in Logic was telling me signals were coming into logic.
I then connected my Edirol audio interface ( FA-66 ) 6in/6out. to the computer via Firewire. Midi setup in utlilities sees the device. And that's good right?
I then used stereo jacks to connect the audio interface to my studio monitors. I played a song in itunes music is coming through the speakers, great!
Now off to the problem, finally. The reason I got the audio capture device is so that I can record Vocals and guitars, but the thing is when I connect my Mic and guitar to the device no sound in coming into logic, eventhough I can play the guitar clean through my monitor speakers. Very strange. I see 6 input/output channels in logic so it sees the edirol. So if i set Input 2 in logic and put the guitar in inputjack 2 the signal doesn't get through.
Am I supposed to intertwine the Midi keyboard and audio interface together? If so how is that done? Can anybody help?
Thanks for baring with the newbie!

Don't go beating yourself up... you'll rob the trolls of their only pleasure.
It's like you said: you're new. We were all new once.
Glad you're up and running... let's hear some music.

  • Does Logic support Audio Interface and MIDI simultaneously over USB?

    Hi -
I'm new to this so please bear with me :-). I have a MacBook running Logic. Also have a MIDI controller hooked up via USB.
I also have a USB Mixer that I'd like to hookup to the Mac's audio output. Currently, I have the MacBook's headphone output going into the mixer. I'd love to get the cleaner sound afforded by the USB connection. Is this possible while keeping the MIDI connection over USB?

Thanks, Fox. You're right - I just tried it out and it worked out very well (although I'm getting I high-pitched noise through my monitor speakers only when Logic is running. The noise stops when I exit out of Logic.)
I couldn't get myself to believe that the Mac/Logic could keep the USB data straight - MIDI on one, and audio on the other, but sure enough, it works just fine. :-)
    Thanks!

  • Record video into finalcut  and audio multitrack into logic in sync

    Hi,
I'm an experienced logic user but new to video.
What is the best way to record video and audio multitrack!! synchronously?
Can I record video direct to my harddisc and synchronously record audio into logic or soundtrack pro? We have two separate macs available.
-Can I connect finalcut with logic via rewire or do I need additional sync hardware?
-How can I start record simultaneously for finalcut and logic?
    -Do I need finalcut pro?
-Can I record video and audio directly and simultaneously into soundtrack pro or finalcut?
I currently work with a cutter who uses canopus but assign each video take to each audio take is so time consuming. There must be a better solution for video production.
    Any feedback appreciated,
    Thanks Eddie

I may be wrong about this, but AFAIK…
Can I record video direct to my harddisc and synchronously record audio into logic or soundtrack pro?
    No.
-Can I connect finalcut with logic via rewire or do I need additional sync hardware?
    FCP is not ReWire compatible.
-How can I start record simultaneously for finalcut and logic?
    You can not.
    -Do I need finalcut pro?
Maybe, but I can't say one way or the other. What is your goal with video?
-Can I record video and audio directly and simultaneously into soundtrack pro or finalcut?
You can record directly into FCP, either via FW or SDI (if you have supporting hardware)
I currently work with a cutter who uses canopus but assign each video take to each audio take is so time consuming. There must be a better solution for video production.
Not familiar with Canopus, so I can't comment.
    Any feedback appreciated,
Some editors find the term "cutter" to be an unfair characterization of what they do. We do waaaaay more than just cut out the bad takes!

  • Audio recording using Logic and Mbox

    Sirs,
I've to import vinyl using Logic and the Mbox (Digimedia) card. Does anyone have experience in such kind of operation?
Thanks in advance for your help.
titanium 1ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   Logic Platinum 7.1 - Mbox audio card

No MBox, but I just patch my turntable into a phono preamp I bought at Radio Shack about 25 years ago (in order to have RIAA equalization) and the preamp outs into your interface and you can record like normal.

  • Help! connections for the midi and audio cables for use with Apogee & Logic

Newbie to mac! A Basic question, I know.
    I have:
    Logic express 8
    1 x Apogee Duet
    1 x Midi in/out interface.
After my external sound module recieves the midi info stored in logic, it creats an audio signal.
    QUESTION!
How do I... monitor this output with my audio recoded files in logic. so audio and midi (final mix) is played together, using the Duet?
I understand that a seperate mixer would do the job, i have one, but i need to keep the music making and recoding process as simple as possible, otherwise i get annoyed with lots of settings and things and give up... for another year!
    All I wanna do is:
Record one real instrument at a time. these would be Guitar, Bass and Mic. (ok, simple connections with the duet.)
Record midi keyboard messages into logic, edit, quantise etc. rhave logic send the midi info out to my roland xv 5080, and route the audio out of the xv 5080 with the final mix.
(I dont know if this can be done with the Duet??)??
Whilst advoiding the use of a seperate hardwarwe mixer.
would i have been better going for the Ultralite or something?
Any help is much appreciated as i am struggling to get my head round the basics.

I understand that it can be done this way, but i will be continually swapping leads. Yes a mxer wuld solve this, bu would a cheapish mixer effect the sound quality of the duet?
could i use the digital output on roland and send to the imac's digital in? and at the same time record audio in logic. so basically this digital signal will go into imac into logic then be routed straight to the output that the duet is connected to? Would this work, is there a seting in logic where u can have more than 1 input and send this straight to the main outputs??
ooooo, maybe thats a possibility, just hought of that. dont know if it'll work though.
    Thanks clanwork

  • Logic i/o midi AND audio?

im trying to use the Logic i/o plug in , not sue if im doing it right?
I have a sound module thats going into my 828mk2 inputs (11&12) and midi set up.
I can play the module fine from Logic but i thought that when you used the i/o plug in you could set up ONE track to use (like a internal plug in) that became the midi and the audio in order to record the track?
Do i have to record on a MIDI track the part from the module and then use a different audio track to capture it?
Im sure once i used a instrument track with the i/o on it and it became a midi/audio track all in one for outside gear? so i could record/midi all within the one track?
    Am i being stupid?

so how do i use the external instrumnet and the i/o together?
External instrument on the instrument slot on a software instrument channel. This handles both MIDI and audio routing. What do you want to use the I/O plugin for? If you want to route to external hardware, then put the I/O plugin on one of the FX inserts on that software instrument channel.
Can i make my hardware become like a VST? and if using both utilities can i render a file to audio like i can a vst?
No, you have to record it in the conventional way.
or does it have to be real-time bounce only?
Yes, external instruments have to be played in real-time. Logic cannot yet speed up the universe to perform faster than realtime bounces - at least, not in Logic 8...

  • Logic Pro and Audio Recording

I just read the incredibly depressing post entitled "should emagic buy back logic?" and I'm more confused than ever about purchasing Logic.
I am primarily a guitar player and will be recording mostly real instruments. I would like to learn more MIDI, but this is not my priority. I am VERY torn between ProTools LE (Digi 002) and Logic with a MOTU.
My question is this: What exactly does everyone mean when they say ProTools does "audio" better than Logic?I mean, what is the MAJOR difference? And should this HEAVILY be taken into consideration when purchasing one or the other? I am really torn here and am going on my SECOND month of contempalation on this issue. I just want to make sure I make the right purchase because either way it is a lot of money and I am pretty much commited to one product or the other once I choose. Thanks for the help everyone.

    Jack Q,
I am in the same boat as you. I did buy Logic pro. I also have a digi001 and thought very much about the decision. I record straight audio and found more midi people working with Logic than protools. My questions before getting Logic about how many people were using it for straight audio did not ellicit an overwhelming response. Here is my opinion based on owning Logic for almost 6months.
The manual (for me) is almost useless. I am a hands on kinda guy and needed to be shown how to do many functions in person.I paid someone to help and it still was and is a huge learning curve. I came from protools which in my opinion is much more user friendly.
I bought logic pro because I have a nice apogee interface and Protools (002)does not support 92 sample rate that my appogee is capable of and higher. I also bought logic because the PLUG INs that come with it are a great value. The plugs that come with the 002 are NO comparison and very costly. I f you do get a protools rig DO NOT GET AN 002. Move up to the HD world because in the long run you will kick yourself.
This forum has helped me so much and I have begun to learn alot!!!!! The people here will really help you...and you CAN COUNT ON THEM.
Certain things about Logic really frustrate me such as there are SO MANY OPTIONS. It is a bit overwhelming. IMO. the editing is cumbersome and confusing with LOGIC.
Some people talk about LOGIC being a creative tool as opposed to protools being more of a simpler recorder and editor.I believe this to be true and ideally it would be great to have both. I am starting to enjoy Logic more and more...but if I had it my way and had the money...I would have PT HD3 and alot of even more money for plug ins.
Logic is a great value. It has lots of fun stuff to play with like loops etc. Depending on what kind of music you make it might also influence your decision. I still love my 001 and have made some good recordings that have been used on TV. I heard some cool things about Logic and wanted to upgrade the QUALITY of my recordings with the Appogee interface which as I've said before was my main reason for getting Logic.
I am a guitar player and also record live drums, bass and keys with Logic. I am still having some trouble adjusting to the nuances of how to keep it simple as a recorder and editor/mixer/master. It is slowly coming together and I can hear that the quality is very good. I personally don't like messing around with key commands as that makes me even more confused. I just lik to point my mouse and go. It seems that no matter how I slice it Logic takes a few more steps than protools does. for expample punching in etc.
ALL AND ALL..I am glad to have 2 systems. Logic familiarity is growing on me and even though I get bothered sometimes...in the long run...with the help of this forum...everything will be smooth and I'll have more time to actually make music. If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me.
Good luck with your decision..read alot..asl questions an go look at logic in an APPLE STORE or firend house before buyiong

  • Yamaha MO8 and Korg Volcas with Logic Pro X- recommendations for mixer and audio interface

I plan to use Logic Pro X to access and configure the patch list for my Yamaha MO8 workstation. The Steinberg software I downloaded previously didn't work and never allowed me to configure the sounds. From what I've heard, I was told to use a cheap mixer or a Audio/MIDI interface (like the Scarlett 2i2 or 4i4). The Yamaha MO8 will be used as a master and has MIDI IN, OUT, and THRU. I also have the Korg Volca synths to use as slaves (they only have the MIDI IN port), and plan to connect them to the MIDI THRU on the keyboard. I already have the Yamaha USB driver installed, and the Mac recognizes the device. I also have the Portmidi app and wonder if that will allow me to see the patch list (with the actual names, not numbers).
What mixer and audio/MIDI interface do you recommend to use the Yamaha MO8 and the Korg Volcas? Just to be clear, I don't want to use software synths, but would like to use the external instruments to get the audio (which I know can be selected through the Environment Panel on Logic Pro X).

Anything with 2 audio inputs and 2 MIDI outs.
-Out HP jack of Volca-1/8 to 1/4 adapter into Audio interface 1 (For any that are stereo use both 1 and 2 and use a Y splitter in addition to 1/8 to 1/4 adapters.
-Midi out from interface to Midi in of volca (Or buy a USB to MIDI interface for about $35)
-When starting up the volcas hold down the "Memory button" the LED will tell you what MIDI channel it is set to, you can change it if you wish)
-Create external MIDI track and set it to the same channel as the Volca (Only if you want to do sequencing in the DAW, if thee Volca sequencer is handling it then not necessary)
-Patch together the Volcas via the "synch out/Synch in" jacks to insure they are synched
-Record them all together or one at a time, depending on how many simultaneous tracks your interface can handle.

  • Hi need help! 2.2 or 2.4? Logic and maybe some video, I like GLOSSY!

First off, I like the glossy and for video, crucial stuff, I could always get a 30" or whatever MATTE display for that down the road, but right now I can not seem to find any BENCHMARKS on 2.2 vs 2.4 for say LOGIC and how many more plug-ins you would get or not get.
Right now on a Mac Pro (work) and was wondering if anyone knew where I could find such an article that compared the two for audio and or video use and how much of a gain would you get with the extra 200 which is really equal in old school to about 350 more megahertz and the extra 128MB of VIDEO.
If someone could please explain as I plan on ordering one sometime next week.
    Thanks.
P.S. Is it really a desk top replacement? Can it do the job with or without the added 7200 RPM drive? Is the USB or FIREWIRE 800 HD's fast enough to stream say orchestral samples without choking?
    In order of priority:
    a) Rock and Roll (Analog, Vocals, guitar (but plug in), bass, then plug ins for drum machines, still not sure on whether to go LOGIC or LE (I know, its a huge rip off (LE from Digi), but I like their Digi Strike - am hoping that Logic 8 and Groove Agent 3 will solve some of this.
Lastly, how many displays can you drive from a MBP? Can you drive two? Do you think that will be a feature to come, or should I just get a Mac Pro and say the heck with it at home!
    Thanks!

You will likely not find benchmarks for Logic as the HD and other internal components will play a huge roll in the performance you get from the applications and various plug-ins. Plug-ins put different strains on your processor, depending on the level of processing each plug-in requires.
No, the MacBook Pro isn't a desktop replacement when it's being used for audio recording and mixing, especially when you compare it to a Mac Pro. No way will it beat out a maxed out eight-core Mac Pro. You'll get night and day performance differences in these two machines.
It sounds like you'll be working with 4 tracks of stereo .. or possibly 10 mono tracks? If you state specifics about your method of recording and play-back and what audio interface you intend to use, we'll have a better idea of exactly how many tracks and plug-ins you actually intend/need to use simultaneously. Also, which plug-ins are you intending on using per channel? Are you going to utilize sends for global FX or rather, assigning fx to each and every channel separately?
As to the external displays you intend on using, will one not be enough? You can attach up to a 30" cinema display if you buy the 256mb upgrade option (NVidia 8600m GT) using dual display mode to assign separate windows to each display.
As to the difference you'll see by utilizing that upgrade, check this link out: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/graphics.html
My purchase advice is this if you MUST purchase a MacBook:
    2.4 MacBook Pro
    2GB of RAM
    7200rpm Internal 160GB HD Option
Logic Express 7 (if you haven't used logic, there is a big, not huge learning curve - be warned) It's incredibly powerful.
You said LE is a rip off? Of what? Pro Tools HD - yes, Logic 7? No. These two applications couldn't be more different. Logic is a sequencer/audio recorder and mixer/midi recorder with a fully customizable mixing environment and Pro Tools is the industry standard for audio editing, recording and mixing digital audio. Logic allows you to use stereo tracks and Pro Tools uses mono (split-stereo) tracks like you'll see in every professional recording studio.
Go with Pro Tools LE if you think you'll be using mostly audio recordings versus utilizing midi-styled sequencing of audio units instruments. The MIDI and virtual instrument implementation within Logic is far superior to Pro Tools in my opinion.
If you're looking for a great virtual rock-n-roll drummer plug-in, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by overlooking Quantum Leap Ministry of Rock. This plug-in also features guitar and bass instruments sure to please any rocker. For orchestral samples, try Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra plug-ins.
What's your budget for this recording rig you're planning on putting together? Also, what are you planning on monitoring your output with? ADAM S2.5A studio monitors? Genelec 8050A monitors? Mackie HR824 mk2s?
What are you using for a DAC? The Benchmark DAC-1?
    More details please...

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • How can I match sound quality between video clips and audio clips?

    Hi guys,
First of all let me say that I enjoy using the latest Media Encoder. However, as a novice, I have two related problems.
1.I am recording video to use with PowerPoint slides in Adobe Captivate. I am encoding the video with best quality FLV. This produces very good video,
but with a degraded audio track, even though I had filtered the audio in soundbooth. The post encoding sounds like it did before Soundbooth corrections.
    2. Some of the video recording has been set cut into audio clips to be used as background narration behind PowerPoint. The logic behind this is: that if both are
recorded at the same time, the voice quality should match.
This is far from the outcome. I have tried MP3 for the audio which of course produced the best sound- but is entirely unlike the rest of the video. I have also encoded the audio with Windows Waveform preset figuring that since the soundbooth edit was a .wav file, that there should be a reasonable match. Wrong again!
So, the audio quality of all clips is poor, and the difference between the encoded video clips, and the audio encoded clips spoils the otherwise professional result in Captivate.
Please help, all of you experts.

    Thank you.
    OS Windows 7 x 64; 3.2 MHz; 2 TB; 12 GB Ram-9GB ram allocated to Adobe.
    My process is this:
    1. The whole video and audio narration material is shot in one continuous video sesseion.
    2. The microphone is only mono, but the camera is set to stereo. Noone can work out how to change the camera to mono.
    3. In Premiere Pro 5, I select render and replace in SoundBooth.
    4. In Soundbooth, I choose Add Multichannels.
    5. In Multichannels, I delete the unwanted noisy channel, and any other unused channels.
    6. With the remaining mono channel, I then select Export and Save As option, then Stereo.
    7. Next I edit the stereo channels as needed.
    8. The imported stereo won't automatically update in Premiere Pro, so in PPR I import the new edited stereo track.
    9. I test this track in PPR, to check that it is playing R & L channels. It is. OK.
10 On the timeline, I proceed to cut apart this single stereo wavelength .
11.These clips are saved as Video, or Audio subclips.
12 From the video subclips, I export to Media Encoder, and choose either FLV4 match attributes (High Q). This I modify to custom 2 pass (Custom save).
The summary says that this is saved to MP3 Stereo.
    13. I import this into Captivate 5, but the Video outcome is Left channel only. I have tested this on Media Player/Real Player where it is also L channel only.
    14. I export my Audio subclips to Media player, and select MP3 option and this summary also reports stereo. The Audio outcome is stereo, when played in any player and in Captivate 5.
I cannot understand how a single, continuous track edited uniformly in Soundbooth to stereo, can produce different outcomes in Media player.
I would so appreciate a solution to this problem, because, in the Captivate 5 e-learning production, the switch between stereo audio (behind PowerPoints), and l. channel video is distracting. Naturally, the l. channel only is a thin sound. It is as if it had never been edited in SoundBooth at all.

  • Logic Pro X - Record in time - Logic moves audio automatically out of time

I have a mac book pro
    OSX Version 10.8.4
2.3 Ghz intel core i5 processor
    8 GB memory 1333 MHz DDR3
Latest version of Logic Pro x
When I record an audio track using the mac book pros built in microphone, I sing or play an acoustic part in time (yes in time, I'm not dodgy time-wise!)
But when I play back the audio, Logic has shifted the audio file to be out of time by some way, from the click
    - it also does this when I connect up my mbox 2
    any ideas anyone?

Sounds like you are not monitoring through your soundcard or logic and the latency of your audiobox/soundcard is placing the recording too late. Try to reduce the buffer to 256 or 128 in your mbox mix display, and use software monitoring if you can.

  • Airplay - Video to TV and audio to wireless speakers.

My house is Apple House...  MAC Pros, iPads, iPods, Iphones, Apple TV, etc...for every member of our family.  I have a choice between moving away from Apple to Sonos for audio or make Airplay work logically.  Which is streaming audio to speakers when needed.  Practically, video to TV and audio to speakers.  Therefore, is there anyone at Apple or in the user community who would know how to get this done.  Isn't this only common sense?  Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks Vazandrew.  I have already tried without success.  As soon as video streams from the Macpro to the AppleTV to the TV, the Airplay compatible speakers go silent.  There must be a small setup detail I'm missing.  I'll keep on trying.  Thanks for your reply.
