Logical Database being obsolete, we migrate towards...?

Hello.
I have been asked to rewrite a program Z that is in a lack of performance lately. I have looked at it and saw that it was using a logical database. After fixing and changing a few performances things like the SELECT/ENDSELECT and that kind of usual perfomance stuff, I read in my research that I did that it was still maintainted and used on the old programs but it is now something obsolete.
After reading on what it is and how big is their impact, I was wondering what is now replacing them when you need something similar on a newer program.
For example, in the request I have, the DDF logical database is used and is huge too. Though, in the new version, where I will try to prevent myself of using a logical database due to the fact it is obsolete, I am wondering what I can use instead to make a similar job.
After all, a huge concept like Logical Databases /has/ to have something that took over to replace them, right?

I understand what you mean but the performance cost actually is too high to be neglected. The program is actually making a call of GET KNA1, GET KNB1 and GET BSID which means 3 loops blocks in each other, not counting the possible loops needed in internal tables. This is quite a problematic at the moment because this old program now uses those three GET and the massive amount of datas in those three tables makes it that the performance is leading mostly to a short dump than a good final result.
This is why I was looking for an alternate way, looking towards if the Logical Database who is still used but declared "obsolete" was now having a replacement nowadays.
As far as the datas are concerned, to answer your question, the archivages of them happened time after time after time and everyday. It is getting to a point that we are too close of the actual date to even think of more archivage. Believe me, the datas involved, since this problem started, has been verified over and over again. But I know it was an option and thank you for suggesting it.
So it is really a perfomance issue and since the Logical Database takes a lot of performance, like John Armytage confirmed, I am trying to find an alternative to all this. Any suggestions? I still have not found anything that is replacing Logical Database today.

I am newbie at EF. I am focusing on Code First. I have an idea that
DropCreateDatabaseIfModelChanges
and another DataBase initializer is not acutal for EF 6 but it was used in previous version.

I do not know why you think so, if the team decides to make the database initializer obsolete, I think they would make a markup as Deprecated, however, there is not such a markup on that method on MSDN document. And the Database initializer method is useful
when we play with automatic migration. In your case, the DropCreateDatabaseIfModelChanges database initialization strategy, would delete the original database and create new one according your new model. Of course, data would be missing. If you are under a
scenario need to make a test to recreate the database frequently, this one should be ok.
Currently, there are four database initialization strategies could be used:
CreateDatabaseIfNotExists<TContext> Class
DropCreateDatabaseAlways<TContext>
DropCreateDatabaseIfModelChanges<TContext>
MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion<TContext, TMigrationsConfiguration>
You could use one of them for a proper scenario.

Are the logical database obsolete?

I read that the logical database it's obsolete, and we should use the function module LDB_PROCESS. I was used to use the logical database pnp, if i want to implement my programs in the new way, what should i change? and how could this impact in the programs?.

New Logical database is PNPCE...but still you can use the PNP logical database.
if you use HR_READ_INFOTYPE function module..no need to worry which lbd u are using

Logical Database and Logical Thing

i want to access KONV which is cluster table and the field is KWERT.
The thing is that i want to access it by taking customers from KNVV and giving it to VBRK (SALES Table). Now in VBRK i want to have a selection on FKDAT to get a list of Customers stored in the field called KUNAG.
on VBRK-KUNAG basis i want to access the table KONV-KWERT.
If i am doing queries then the System stops responding cuz it has got alot of overhead. So i tried to use Logical Database called VFV.
If this is the best solution means using LDB then how to use it, can anyone help me with this. I tried it by Function module but it is showing all data without considering selection criteria.
If anyone can help me then plz do answer or refer me to any web site so that i can figure this thing out. If anyione has got a good book on that then plz feel free to mail me.

I used FREE_SELECTION_INIT, FREE_SELECTION_DIALOG and then FREE_SELECTIONS_RANGE_2_WHERE to get ther Selections in one table.

The Scenario here is that we want to take BILLED Customers and VKORG as Industrial Billing Customer and then taking VBRK and giving all these Customers and then taking selection on FKDAT range.
Now after that the data should be collected from KONV-KWERT and i want to perform some calculation over it. I am using VFV (Logical Database) to perform this thing because i know that it would be very fast then applying my own queries.

I am providing some more details:
While I was testing the MRP BADI the MDTB table is not being updated with any data . OSS note 440016 says that there is a customizing setting by which you can still update the MDTB table but this would lead to performance issues (easier to query though).
In standard SAP, MRP data is stored as an aggregated list (table is stored as a data cluster and I need an ABAP extract to get something meaningful from it) in table MDTC for improved performance.
Does any body having an ideas on this?

Logical database HR

Dear Gurus,
I m trying to debug a report which is done using logical database programig.
Report is rnning for all employees and checking whetere for thsi employee contract is expring in 30 days or not.if expring iys just displaying data.
Report is running using statement Get Pernr.
I m new to abap..i jsut want to execute an ddebug teh prograom for 1 emplyee,...but when i started debugging its reading employeess 1 by 1 through get pernr...and looping..
but i just want to debug for 1 employee...and see hoe its working...
I diont have option to select on selection screen..
Is this possible as otherwise its taking a long time to debug...

Put a break point on GET PERNR statement.
So when you execute the report the program will stop on this statement.
You can look at the field PERNR-PERNR to find out for which employee the code is being run.
remember from GET PERNR event till END OF SELECTION event its like a loop. So after END OF SELECTION the employee number will get changed at GET PERNR event.

How to make use of logical database in reports?

I am working on a Cash Flow Forecast report, which requires the usage of 'PSJ' Logical Database for the selection screen with Profit Center(PRCTR) as one field and the other field being Period ( in MM/YYYY format).
I have not worked on Logical Database before. Since, its for the first time I am working on LDB, I require help on it.
How to proceed for this, can someone help me with it?
On receiving further inputs, I will proceed and might come up with some more queries.

Logical Database for MD04

I have been using Logical Database DBM to get the MRP Lists for materials (MD05). Is there a similar Logical database for the MD04 counterpart?
Problem with MRP lists, the data is static until I run MRP, with MD04, I see the realtime result every time.

You are very fortunate to be able to use DBM. The last system I worked on in which MDTB table was being populated was a 3.1H R/3 system in 2002, MDTB table is by default not populated in recent SAP releases, although as you have seen, this behavior can be changed through configuration, at the expense of MRP performance, .
I am not aware of any single LDB that contains all the elements of MD04. As you mention, most of the data in MD04 is extracted or calculated dynamically at run time, and is not stored in any tables in the same way that MRP stores data in MDKP and MDTB. If you need to see 'current' information, then just use MD04, or create a custom report.

Logical database PNP not retrieving data for custom infotypes.

Hi all,
I am using logical database PNP in a program. I have declared infotypes as follows:
INFOTYPES: 0001, 0002, 0041, 9801, 9840.
The problem is that the logical database is retrieving data for the standard infotypes but not for the custom infotypes. Any explanation as to why data for custom infotypes is not being retireved and how this can be solved will be greatly appreciated.

What is the logical database for vendor cleared items. KDF is giving me only open items.
Actually I am preparing a report which uses vendor cleared items and trying to get the list from BSAK table. Which would be the better way (faster process for better performance)
a) directly fetching data from database table like BSAK or
b) by using logical database

If just display of all cleared items in a report, then i would suggest you to go for Query development instead of a z report and use BSAK. Being Index table and query, we can reduce several errors in logic/easy to develop/less time.
If you need Z report only, then also, you can go for BSAK. Where as BASK is secondary index table which helps to fetch data fast.
In one way, BSEG - BSIK = BSAK for your case!

Logical database PNP (Suppress message)

Hi,
      we are having 1 report which is using logical database PNP
      this is being shown in ALV
      when the user runs the report the output is shown and after pressing BACK button the below lines are being shown
Personnel numbers skipped by the database driver
Reason 1: insufficient authorization, no. skipped personnel nos.:
this is being done by logical databse program SAPDBPNP
is there any way to supress this mesasge

Problem in KDF Logical Database !!

Hii Friends,
We need to modify Tcode F.42 and add a field Business Place(BUPLA) on Selection Screen. This is the main requirement.
So i make a copy of this program and KDF logical database.
I am adding a field BUPLA in ZKDF custom logical database. But this Business Place is not working, if i need to debug this logical database, I am unable to debug the logical database.

Problem in Using Logical Database PNP

Hi Guru's,
I am using PNP logical database and rp_provide_from_last
macros statements to fetch data from PA Tables.
When i am doing extended syntax check it is showing more
than 60 error's in ECC 6.0 for below statements:
      1) Tables: Pernr
      2) Infotypes: 0001,0002. and
      3) RP_PROVIDE_FROM_LAST statements.
Could any please provide soloution how to clear all these.

Hi,
Logical databases are special ABAP programs that retrieve data and make it available to application programs. The most common use of logical databases is still to read data from database tables by linking them to executable ABAP programs.
However, from Release 4.5A, it has also been possible to call logical databases using the function module LDB_PROCESS. This allows you to call several logical databases from any ABAP program, nested in any way. It is also possible to call a logical database more than once in a program, if it has been programmed to allow this. This is particularly useful for programs with type 1.
Logical databases contain Open SQL statements that read data from the database. You do not therefore need to use SQL in your own programs. The logical database reads the program, stores them in the program if necessary, and then passes them line by line to the application program or the function module LDB_PROCESS using an interface work area.
Logical Databases - Views of Data
A logical database provides a particular view of database tables in the R/3 System. It is always worth using logical databases if the structure of the data that you want to read corresponds to a view available through a logical database.
The data structure in a logical database is hierarchical. Many tables in the R/3 System are linked to each other using foreign key relationships. Some of these dependencies form tree-like hierarchical structures. Logical databases read data from database tables that are part of these structures.
The diagram illustrates how the R/3 System might represent the structure of a company. A logical database can read the lines of these tables one after the other into an executable program in a sequence which is normally defined by the hierarchical structure. The term logical database is sometimes used to mean not only the program itself, but also the data that it can procure.
Tasks of Logical Databases
As well as allowing you to read data from the database, logical databases also allow you to program other tasks centrally, making your application programs less complicated. They can be used for the following tasks:
Reading the same data for several programs.
The individual programs do not then need to know the exact structure of the relevant database tables (and especially not their foreign key relationships). Instead, they can rely on the logical database to read the database entries in the right order during the GET event.
Defining the same user interface for several programs.
Logical databases have a built-in selection screen. Therefore, all of the programs that use the logical database have the same user interface.
Central authorization checks
Authorization checks for central and sensitive data can be programmed centrally in the database to prevent them from being bypassed by simple application programs.
Improving performance
If you want to improve response times, logical databases permit you to take a number of measures to achieve this (for example, using joins instead of nested SELECT statements). These become immediately effective in all of the application programs concerned and save you from having to modify their source code

Query using logical database

Hi,
There is one query which is using logical database PNM. I have got one requirement to add one field in selection screen to filter the output. The field which is required to be displayed in selection screen to filter the data is from table mkal which is not present in logical database. Hence my question is, is it possible to add field from table which is not present in logical database? IF yes, please specify the procedure.

Thanks for your inputs.
But my question is, how can I filter the data which is being fetched by standard logical database. I cannot go inside the std. LDB and change internal tables of it. I tried coding in extras, but I think it works only if we want to add additional fields in output.
At present, we are considering the option of creating a z LDB where we copy. std. LDB and also add the reqd. table which is not present in LDB.
Is there any other option?
