Look of photos change when import from D40 into iPhoto 6

I'm using iPhoto 6 and have a Nikon D40. I'm having a problem when I import my photos -- the image quality changes when they go from the camera into iPhoto. The images look more contrast-y, more saturated. I mean, the reds and oranges are so intense it's crazy. They definitely did not look like that when I viewed them in the camera LCD.
I've tried checking in preferences, but can't seem to find anything that would alter the images during transfer. Would this be a camera problem? Anyone using iPhoto 6 have the same problem as I am with their D40?
Any help would be much appreciated!

I am having the same exact problem... iPhoto 6 and Nikon D40. If I import the photos to a folder first, then import from the folder to iPhoto, I can open the iPhoto version and then open the folder version using Preview, just by clicking on the original. I then compare the two side-by-side on the computer screen. The original always looks fine in Preview, so it is clearly a problem with iPhoto over-saturating the photos. I have no solution, but only this observation.

  • Will images be dupliated when imported from Photoshop into iphoto?

I have a simple question really, I use photoshop CS3 to edit and catalogue all my photos but I use iphoto to store images that I upload to .mac gallery and other websites.
What I need to know is, does iphoto duplicate my copy in photoshop when I import it into the app?. Or is there just one location where both apps access it??I don't really want two copies of an image if I can help it! Thanks.

I suggest you use iPhoto to manage your photos with a "managed" library and use Photoshop as your editor from within iPhoto. That way you get the best of both worlds.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • New Photos Won't import from iPhone into iPhoto

i have photos i can see on my iPhone 4
but when I plug into USB on my MacBook Pro it
    is not importing
    please help

I am experiencing exactly the same problem, my iPhoto used to detect my iPhone and proceed to the automatic transfer of new photos, and now it doesn't anymore.
I've done quite a bit of research on this issue, but I can't seem to have any luck in fixing it...
Here's some fixes that I found on other sites that you could try:
    1. Reset the iPhone and your Mac.
    2. Check (from memory) if you have any pictures in your camera roll that weren't taken with your iPhone camera (this includes screenshots, photos downloaded from the web, email, etc.), this may be the cause of the problem and it's what makes iPhoto not recognize the phone as a camera anymore.
As for my problem, I've tried everything: resetting the phone, resetting my MacBook Pro, first deleting all photos that might be causing the problem, now I've deleted ALL my photos, and my Mac still won't detect my iPhone as a camera.
iTunes can see it just fine, and I can sync with it perfectly, but I can't sync it with iPhoto for the life of me...
If anyone could help, that would be perfect...

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.

  • Can't import from 3GS into iPhoto

Now when I plug my iPhone in, iPhoto starts up, but no preview of pictures is displayed, and the import button remains grayed out. So I can't import photos.
I have the 3rd party app phoneview. It allowed me to import photos by dragging from it into iPhoto. However phoneview doesn't recognize videos, so they remain stuck on my iPhone.
I did previously upload one bunch of photos that even included some videos, but now it doesn't seem to work. I'm running the latest everything, including Mac OS, iTunes and iPhoto.

There are many video formats. iPhoto can't read all of them; in fact, it can't read most of them. Here's something that can:
VideoLAN - Download official VLC media player for Mac OS X
On the other hand, the videos are just files. You can copy them anywhere you want in the Finder.

  • How to import from PE10 into iPhoto

I am about to buy PE10 but I have seen a lot of discussions on the web about problems saving from PE into iPhoto. Is it achievable and how? I will be using PE for more complicated manipulation involving layers.

Afraid not. You will need something to convert those comments into standard photo metadata like Exif or IPTC.

  • "No photos found" when importing from Canon 7D via USB

Lightroom has no problem finding my Canon 7D. In the Import dialog, my camera shows up as "Canon 7D" under Source. Still, in the main window it's always that "No photos found" message. :-(
I have formatted the memory card (Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB and other cards as well) in the camera a several times, taken some pictures and retried importing. Always that "No photos found".
Using EOS Utility is never a problem when importing.
My OS is Windows 7. Firmware 2.0 in camera. EOS Utility version 2.11.4.0
    Always the latest Lightroom version.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    Ken –
I have Windows 7, PhotoShop Elements 10, and trying this in the organizer.  Basically, I open Photoshop, login to Adobe ID, and then the black screen comes up.  I went to:
File, then “get photos and video”, then “get from camera or card reader”
Elements Organizer – Photo downloader box opens up
There’s a pull down menu asking where to get photos from under the source box but it says “no device found” and doesn’t give me options
I have an older Canon EOS Rebel XT or 350D Digital camera (approx. from 2005).  Elements does mention that sometimes you have to download the software from the original camera to then be able to download the photos to photoshop.  I was trying to avoid this step and not download this really outdated software on my laptop but if that turns out to be the only way to import my photos, I may not have a choice.  If you can suggest where I am going wrong with trying to download the photos, please do so.  I have the cord plugged correctly from my camera to the USB port on my HP laptop.
    Thank you!

  • Colour changes when importing Illustrator graphics into Flash CS3

    Hi there!
I'm creating a Flash site, and all the graphics are imported
    from Illustrator.
Also, in the Illustrator file, there are some Phtoshop
graphics with shadow effects on it.
The problem is, that when I import the .ai into Flash, a
pretty strong colour change occurs: everything becomes lighter. And
the shadow, wich is black in Photoshop, turns white in Flash!
Is there a way to solve this problem? I searched the net, and
some people say it's an OSX thing, wich is pretty strange, because
Mac is an obvious choice for loads of designers.
    I've attached an image preview.
    Preview
    Thanks in advance!
    Alex

    Thanks for the anwsers!
However, the weird thing is, when I pick one of the photoshop
graphics, asign the profile to it, and import it into Flash, the
colors look fairly good. BUT when I import the complete Illustrator
file with alle the graphics in it, I still get the color shift. I
can now put all the graphics in the flash file, one at a time, but
I think thats not the most easy way to do it..

  • Poor photo quality when importing slide show into Elements 10

    Hello,
I'm using Elements and Photoshop Elements 10 on Vista.
What I'm trying to do is import a slide show I made in Photoshop in to a movie I'm making so that the slide show appears as a menu item and I don't have to include a separate disk for the pictures. I've sucessfully imported it, added the menu marker and the disc works, but the photo quality is really crappy. When I play the slide show on its own, the pictures are fine. What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum.
    They work on several levels:
A subscriber comes with a problem/question, and then, hopefully, someone will have an answer
A subscriber comes with a problem/question in mind, and then finds other threads, very similar, and hopefully gets the answer
A subscriber comes to read, to pick up ideas, etc.
In your case, it appears that # 2 worked, just as it should.
As for your question, PrE can produce SlideShows for display from DVD-Video, as good as it gets. Where commercial DVD-Videos enter a different realm, is with Video footage, with motion. There, Hollywood uses special Transcoding software, that allows for many, many more passes to identify the areas of motion, to Transcode at just the right Bit-Rate, for best results. PrE does that with but two passes, unlike the US $ 500,000 programs, staffed by highly-trained experts, who do nothing but Transcoding, all day long. PrE is limited in that respect, but with SlideShows, it will be able to apply the highest Bit-Rate (the DVD-specs. are strict here, so, though higher Bit-Rate = higher quality, DVD-Video can ONLY go so far.) Also, Hollywood uses DVD-9's (DL) so that more Duration can be authored to disc, at the highest-allowed Bit-Rate, for each segment of the Video. With a SlideShow, the Bit-Rate will be as high as the DVD-specs. allow, and per the Duration of the SlideShow vs the capacity of the disc.
Now, there are some other considerations, such as the limited Color Gamut (and Gamma) of DVD-Video vs display on a calibrated computer monitor, or a calibrated Broadcast monitor. One needs to study that limited and different Color Gamut, and perhaps adjust the colors first, in Photoshop. PrE is not designed for Broadcast output, so lacks many of the Tools, that PrPro has. Also, very few PrE users have a calibrated Broadcast monitor hooked up for Color Grading. Last, even if one has produced the ultimate output, with full understanding of the Color Gamut, and used a perfectly calibrated Broadcast monitor, there is no telling what the calibration of the client's monitor (computer, or TV) will be. What is perfect on a calibrated Broadcast monitor might look great on the client's setup, or perhaps not. A Broadcast Engineer can only adjust to standards, and hope for the best, when the disc hits the public. Same for Audio. Who knows what "Aunt Marge" has to play back the DVD-Video?
For ultimate results, I would create a Timeline with a few Still Images, but with each adjusted in slightly different ways in Photoshop. Add a Title, like a Lower-Third, with the Color and Gamma settings over each version, maybe 5 variations, that are slightly different. PS allows one to adjust Colors and Gamma in many ways, so explore. Then, author that Timeline to DVD-Video, using high-quality media, and test on their DVD player/TV setup. See which version looks best, and note the specifics from that Title. Use that to process the actual Still Images for the DVD SlideShow.
Also remember, if one has set things up ideally, they will have calibrated their system and Photoshop. As Photoshop is a Color Managed Workspace, things will be, as good as it gets. DVD-Video, and TV's are NOT Color Managed Workspaces, and most consumer TV's are out of general calibration, having just the generic setting from the factory. Nothing can be done about that.
As mentioned above, if the playback is for a computer (not a DVD player and TV), then better Color and Gamma might be achieved by doing an AV file, and then burning that to a DVD-Data disc, for delivery. However, one still has the variables of the client's computer, its monitor and even the software player used. All play a big role in how that AV file will play for them.
Good luck, and I wish there was an "iron-clad" answer, as to how to achieve the ultimate results, but there are so very many variables involved.

  • Any way to rename files when importing from camera with iPhoto?

I have a naming scheme that I've used when importing photos from my camera (e.g. 2008-09-12-Event ). I can't create a custom folder (in Pictures but outside iPhoto Library) or rename things when importing with iPhoto - is that right? I can't find any advanced options to import ...
If I want this (and don't want to use Adobe Bridge CS3), do I have to get Aperture?
    Thanks -
    Alexa
p.s. I haven't really figured out WHERE my photos go with iPhoto? I've been editing in Photoshop Elements 6 but then have to "Save As" to replace the file - saving it doesn't do it (I think that sends it to the iPhoto library somewhere?) Eek...

    Alexa:
    You might consider this workflow:
1 - using either Image Capture or a card reader upload the images to a folder on the desktop.
2 - name the folder with a brief description of the shoot. I use a short date and description: 08/01/08-Dinner at Toad Hall
3 - use a file renaming application like Resize! to batch rename the files to your specification. I use the international date (for the capture date) and a brief description: 2008-08-01-Dinner at TH-001.jpg.
This allows for good chronological searching and sorting as well as text searching on the description. It also avoids duplicate file name issues in the future. Granted a few extra steps up front but saves me a lot of time later on.
It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Easy import from Photbooth into iPhoto?

Is there an easier way to import my Photobooth images into iPhoto without clicking on the iPhoto icon for each individual picture in Photobooth?
I used to use Picasa, and I could set-up Picasa to "monitor" a folder for new images, and once it detects any new images, it automatically added it into the Picasa library.
Does iPhoto have a similar feature?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Go to your Pictures Folder and Right Click on the iPhoto Package File. From the resulting menu choose 'Open Package Contents'.
Now you're inside the iPhoto Library, so be careful.
You'll see a folder called 'Auto Import'. Right click on it and choose 'Make Alias'
Drag that Alias to the desktop.
Next time you download pics, put them into that Alias. iPhoto will automatically import the pics next time you launch it, and move the files (not copy) into the Originals folder.
Remember, it's a hack. It's not supported by Apple. Operate with care.

  • Calendar Dates: Color Changes When Importing From iCal Not Consistent

Okay. So I wanted to make a family calendar that contained all the birthdays of my extended family. Using "import birthdays from address book" is not an option since I've got lots of friends' birthday included. So I went through the painstaking process of creating a new calendar in iCal and named it "Family Birthdays" and added the birthdays of all my family members. I selected "all day" and made them recurring "every year" and "forever".
To my suprise I noticed these birthdays were indicated on the iPhoto Calendar with a red date and red text. I made no changes to fonts and simply selected
"add iCal calendar" to my iPhoto calendar.
But here's where it gets funny. Approximately half-way through the calendar the dates and titles were black. The calendar was 12 months and began in May of 2006.
I actually like the red dates.
By the way the calendar style/theme used is "large type".
    Questions:
    (1) why did it change to black?
    (2) how can I consistently see these dates in red?

    Allan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. See my last post in Calendar won't print black directional triangles. You can get any color you want but it requires some work.
    Do you Twango?

  • Contrast changes when import from FC to Color

Hi, I have a sequence in Apple Intermediate codec which looks O.K. in FC, but in Color the blacks are crushed and highlights blown...
I usually work with XDCam footage and don't have this problem with it. Any ideas? Thanks.

That's what I thought when I saw the values above and below the cutoff points -- either that or BS is set incorrectly or malfunctioning. At this point, I'm seeing a bigger difference between the FCP and COLOR displays, and I'm wondering what the scaling factor is between the two applications dealing with the media. There used to be a problem like this when "Force RGB" was invoked, but I thought that had been dealt with -- and I mean years ago.
The short and simple is that COLOR is usually right. Personally I grade with Safe ON, and adjust the levels so that I know what I'm going to get, no surprises. To a certain extent, I don't even care how the media translates, as long as I can get it back, and make it what I want it to be. In other words, it all starts out wrong, anyway, right?
When you pull the levels, do you recover any of the "blown-out" areas that can be shown to contain detail as displayed by FCP? We aren't talking about media that has just simply been over-exposed and clipped out, never to return, correct? And, on the other hand, is COLOR remapping the media up into a region that can't be recovered?
Just as a small side caveat, these software "legalizers".... aren't.

    Hi!
I imported a sequence from a Premiere Pro project using File -> Import -> Adobe Premiere Project...
The video in the sequence showed up in the After Effects project as a composition.  However, the composition did not include the sound from the sequence!  Is there a way to keep the sound from the sequence upon import into After Effects?

Nevertheless it seems that you saved my day. looks like it was all about the scale to framesize thing.
