Losing gesture ability on wake-up!

Hi,
I keep losing the ability to use 4-finger gestures after waking my MB Retina up from standby or the screen-saver. Not all the time, but some times. All other gestures work and it all goes normal again after a reboot, any ideas or someone with similar issues?? Starts to get really annoying.

Too bad no one has answered this yet. I'm having the same issue. It only happens if I have screen saver set to kick in. I thought I read soemwhere that 10.8.1 would address the issue, but, guess what, it doesn't. It does get tiresome always having to sign out and sign back in to get the gestures working again. I'm going to quit the screen save in power adaptor mode and live with it until someone answers this question.

  • Losing the ability to drag objects after 30 minutes. What's going on?

    Hi,
I'm having a very strange problem. In InDesign, I'm losing the ability to drag objects around with the mouse after about 30 minutes of using the program. Everything else works fine, but I simply cannot perform this function. The box highlights, but simply will not drag. I can use the arrow keys to nudge the boxes over, I can resize and do other things with no issue except this. Additionally, other Adobe applications start to crash when I want to drag things, such as Illustrator.
If I log out and log back in, it's fine again for another half hour. I tried trashing the preferences, updating Creative Cloud, and nothing has worked.
This is seriously damaging my workflow and hindering my ability to complete my work. I have a hard deadline coming up, and I need this solved fast. I'm not on an SSD so logging out and back in takes 5-7 minutes for things to get up and running again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running OSX Mavericks on a 2013 iMac with the full Adobe CC suite installed.
A few things that may be clues:
I first noticed this problem with an out of date InDesign: everything worked fine, BUT when I started to drag an object, InDesign would hard crash, just close completely. After I updated Creative Cloud, now I simply cannot drag, but the program stays functional (other than this essential action).
When this problem is in effect, Illustrator hard crashes, only when I try to drag an object (the problem seems to be uniquely associated with dragging)
Nothing 'triggers' this issue, I'm simply working on a file and then I no longer can drag things around with the mouse. I log out, log back in, and everything is fine for a bit.

Ah! Unfortunately, I'm on a company computer and can't just try these things myself. If that's the issue, I can ask our admins and they'll do it, but I want to make sure I've exhausted anything that could be a small fix.
Is that a shot in the dark, or are you thinking there's a reason a clean install is the solution? Thanks for the help.

My new Mac Mail is losing the ability to send emails periodically. It's running on 10.6.7 /new iMac. I can reset the account by going into Prefs, then first deleting the account and then adding a new SMTP account back. Then sending emails works for a while, until the next time. What's happening?

I keep losing the ability to use the microphone When creating or adding to existing NOTES App that came with my iPhone five how can I turn the microphone back on? It reactivated for a while after the new iOS 6.1 update but only for a couple days.

  • I am using Outlook with Icloud and it is changing the contact email order and in calandar is losing the ability to access a web address by directly clicking on it

I just intstalled iCloud on my PC which uses Outlook.
As a result I have to select iCloud everytime I open Outlook to see both my contacts and Calandars
when i go to send an email, iCloud reverses the order of the email address for a particular contact.  For example, within the contact in outlook the husband address is in the first email and the wife's address in the second spot.  However when I try to send an email in some cases it presents the email address's in the reverse order
When booking southwest airline flights, i save the flight info to outlook calandar.  this flight info contains active links to Southwest which allow me to check in without having to enter name, etc.  once the calandar event goes to iCloud and comes back to my PC it strips out the ability to have an active link and shows the web address in a text form.
I hope someone has some ideas about this

First make sure Settings > Facebook > Contacts is turned off. Tis might be different from what you described in your question.
Then open your Contacts app and check carefully what is there for your son and grand daughter's contact info. Correct if necessary.

  • Users losing the ability to access mapped drives or browse to file shares

I have Server 2008 with Service Pack 2....32bit.  I have about 75 - 100 users that connect to it for file access and print.  For some reason during random parts of the day users will lose the ability to access their drive mappings.  They
are also unable to browse to any of the volumes.  This starts out with just a few users then affects everyone within minutes.  Although you can ping and access the server through RDP just fine.  After a reboot of the server everything is fine.
This is happening 2 to 3 times per week.  There is nothing in the event logs that explain this.  ANY suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Hi,
such behavior can be caused by inresponsible disks or by issues with the network connection.
Is Windows Explorer locally on the server still capable to access the physical volume hosting the shares?
Are there processes like volume snapshots or DFS replication causing high load?
How current are the network interface drivers on both the clients and the server?
If upgraded drivers do not help, you can try to disable the various TCP Offloads in the network adapter properties as well as TCP Chimney.
Also the network switch could play a role.
    Best greetings

  • Airport Losing Wireless Ability

    Hardware
    Airport Extreme
    iBook G4
    PC
    D-Link 5 Port Switch
    Setup
    - The iBook was connectimg Wirelessly.
    - PC is connected into the Switch via Ethernet.
    - Switch is connected to the LAN Port to the Airport.
    - Cable Modem is connected directly to the Airport to the WAN Port.
    Problem
The PC has internet as well did the iBook. It was working for about... 4 months since I bought it but recently has given out.
The only thing though that has given out is the Wireless. The PC still has internet via Ethernet and the iBook also has internet only when I plug it into the Switch via Ethernet, wireless is out.
So I am guessing the Airport's Wireless has died or something. For the Laptop's Bluetooth Wireless is working perfectly.(Proven). Now though I can't even connect to the Airport using the Admin Utility even after resetting.
    Troubleshoot
    - Have reset the modem / Airport
    - Have Power-Surged (Think thats the right terminology) the modem and Airport. (Only fixed it for a day)
Any light on this matter would be great.
    Sincerely,
    David

  • Accidental wake ups and freezes

    Hello,
I have a weird problem with my Macbook sometimes. When I put my laptop to sleep and close the lid sometimes it can wake up in the middle of the night and keep running till morning without any reason, causing high enclosure temperature. Reseting PRAM/SMS does not help. I don't have any devices connected to my machine except USB Bluetooth mouse, but I switched off in the preference pane ability to wake up my computer using Bluetooth device.         Hi, powderday-
I'm sorry to learn of the strange issues! I have the Nexus too, and I love it. While I have not seen this on my device, I can recommend a few tricks. The basic one is to enable safe mode (http://bit.ly/vW58PM) to see if these issues continue while in the mode. Do you recall an update to the weather widget recently? If this fails, I suggest a hard reset (http://bit.ly/swCYZF) to correct these. Backing up the devices information via Google for your contacts, and a computer for your media files is best! Keep me posted so I can continue to help.
    Thank you,

  • Don't want random keyboard & mouse events to wake from sleep

is there any way to prevent a random keyboard press or mouse movement from waking up the computer? a terminal setting or something? ideally, i'd just like to use the power button to do this--or at the very least to completely disable the mouse's ability to wake the machine, and specify a certain key or something.
seems like an obvious setting that's missing...or that i'm overlooking...?

  • If I upgrade my iMac G4 from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5 will Firefox work properly as it will not allow me to upgrade and so I am losing out on much of what Firefox does?

The message is That I am using an older version of Firefox but I can't upgrade to the most recent version (within the last year) and I am losing the ability to do things. For example, I can't send out emails from Gmail now, the type on the screens of many web sites is squeezed small and some web pages are "scrambled" in appearance. Before I purchase an upgrade to the Leopard OSX 10.5 I would like to know if Firefox works properly with it?

Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

  • Remotely wake up Mac

I am currently using my MBP and my Mac Pro. I have a second monitor connected to my MBP (along with a keyboard and a mouse), and a TV & another monitor connected to my Mac Pro (also with a keyboard and a mouse).
In an effort to clean up my desk, I have setup VNC so that I can share 1 set of keyboard and mouse and a monitor, while the Pro is still hooked up to my TV. MBP is setup as client and Pro as the server.
My problem is that I am unable to wake up my Pro from my MBP using VNC? does anyone know how to achieve this?

as rack0 tack0 says, if the computers are connnected by wired ethernet you can easily do it using wakeOnLan
    http://www.readpixel.com/wakeonlan/
Snow leopard also introduced the ability (called wake on demand) to do it wirelessly if you have a Time Capsule or an Airport Extreme base Station
however, that only works on new computers and mac pro early 2008 doesn't support this feature.

  • Alarm to wake up my powerbook

    Hey hello,
    can some-one help me.
i've been looking for an alarm clock thingy that'll wake me up every weekday at 8.
it should take my closed powerbook out of sleep and start playing a smooth and slow playlist out of itunes (or something like that.)
does anyone know how to do this?
i've tried aurora, iAlarm tried creating an automator app, but i couldn't make it run automatically at 8 let alone let it wake up my mac.
does any one know? how to does
    1. wake up my sleeping pb automatically each day at a certain hour
    2. make it start playing music at that moment.
    thanks for your help

This is what the developer of Alarm Clock has to say on the subject:
    9. Will my laptop wake from sleep if the lid is shut?
    Unfortunately No.
I'm actually a powerbook user, and I've been looking for a solution for this for some time.
To date, I don't know if one exists.
    Here is some more detail:
When you authenticate you give the application (actually a small 'helper' application) permission to tell the OS to wake from sleep at a particular time. This is necessary because only the OS has the ability to wake the computer from sleep. So right before the computer goes to sleep, the alarm clock program informs the OS that it must wake up at a certain time. The OS (I'm assuming) writes this info to the firmware and then moves the applications out of memory and goes to sleep. If the computer isn't a laptop, or the lid isn't shut, everything works just fine. The problem is, if it is a laptop and the lid is shut, the OS completely ignores the request to wake from sleep. I have no idea how to get around this problem at this point since I can't change the operating system.
The workaround is to simply not shut the lid to the laptop. Just manually put it to sleep, or let it go to sleep itself.
If you have any idea on how to fix this problem, or you know of any software that can get around this problem, I'd love to hear about it.

  • Help- losing sound on some DVDs--long post

    Hi,
I have been successfully creating DVDs using iDVD4 for years. Every DVD that has completed its burn, which are most, has played well- with some minor exceptions a few might freeze for a second, but other than that they are fine. The majority of them are family videos. They have been played by my children, over and over and over again. Sometimes left in them machine running for hours on the menu screen when the TV has been turned off, but not the DVD player.
A few months ago I had a new hard drive installed on my G3 700 iMac. I needed to reinstall a lot of software and some of it that had been burned on Yamaha CDs is not more. All my Yamaha CDs that had been burned to back up software, updates, etc. was completely empty. [For the record, I had reinstalled software from these CDs before, so at one time the DATA did exist. All of my other CDs seem to be intact- CDs and CDRW from other suppliers.
Since the DVDs that I make are for the most part being watch a lot, I figured they were fine, although I have wondering if maybe, after seeing what happended to the Yamaha CDs, things are fine. By the way, I called Yamaha and told them what had happened, I wasn't looking for anything, just wanted to tell them, they said that it had been a long time since Yamaha had made branded CDs and also they he had never heard of what I was saying.
Well, today I went to play one of the DVDs that I had burned, and it did not play all of the sound. The sound has 3 parts, the beginning which is the sound that plays on the Apple created menu, it played fine, also the sound at the end played fine, I put a short musical sound bite at the end using SmartSound(I think that is the name of the Company). The video is of my mother baking pies. She has since passed away so this is a partial documentary of her. Her voice does not play on one machine at all (This is the machine that has been used the most and works fine with the other DVDs. On another it is barely discernable that there is audio on. On a portable car player it works fine. On my eMac it plays fine.
Another DVD made around the same time is having the same problem. It is also of my mother and I put a music soundtrack on the entire DVD in addition to my mother talking throughout the video. Now, only the background music plays.
The videos were originally shot on Hi8 and transferred to MiniDV and then edited and burned using iDVD4. Until recently, they played fine.
I have Toast Titanium 6. I burned a copy and got the same results. I see that their are the Audio_TS and Video_TS files. I tried to burn a DVD from the files and I think I ended up with a DATA file DVD. Is it possible that their is something wrong with part of the audio file that might be fixed by burning a Video DVD from the Audio and Video files. I have never done this. I don't even know if it can be done.
I am thinking that I better back up my other DVDs before the same thing happens. I now use Verbatim exclusively. Some of my older DVDs were Apple brand, and and some other brands.
Anyway, thank you for reading this, and I would sure appreciate any help. Thankfully I do have DVDs of the unedited footage that could always be reedited and burned. I am also thinking that I need to copy my MiniDV tapes to new tapes.
    Thank you again.

I am not sure why this is happening other than aging/playing the DVD disks. I do have one question and then some lengthy comments/suggestions. You stated that you used Toast and 'burned a copy.' You burned another DVD? From what?
You have several options it seems. If you have the original miniDV tapes, they should be fine. You should not have to make copies of them. They are already digital and will not degrade easily. You should be storing them in a cool place. Rewinding each one every year is recommended, but I have to say I have many miniDV tapes some from 10 years ago and many I made from old VHS and Hi8 tapes beginning 6 years ago, and I have not rewound any of them since importing or exporting them. If yours are still good, you can reimport and recreate your iMovie that is missing its sound. Takes work, though.
A recommendation for future projects: I always export my finished edited iMovies back to miniDV tape to preserve my edited movies in a format other than DVD. (One of the reasons I have continued to use iMovie HD6, not 8/9).
    My recommendations:
I know that DVD disks can become damaged: scratched, warped, cracked, broken, melted or even have 'stuff' spilled on them! I did not want to risk losing my movies to a ruined DVD disk. So, I make disk image files for each of my iDVD projects. I cannot remember, but I THINK iDVD 4 was the first version where this was an option, so I would definitely recommend that you do this for future projects.
You just finish your iDVD project, and instead of burning to a DVD disk, you select 'Save as disk image' from the File menu. The process looks just like the burn process, and the encoding takes just as long, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned disk. You can then use this disk image file to burn the actual DVD disks, using Disk Utility.
There are several advantages to having a disk image file of your projects. First, you can get more consistent burning. Second, a disk image file is self-contained, so all the information for any media used in the project is encoded into the file itself. This is not the case with the iDVD project, which should be thought of as a container that does not have the media files in it, but just references them and then pulls them together for the burning process. An iDVD project does not move the files into it the way iMovie does.
So, another advantage of the disk image file is that you can safely delete the original iDVD project and also the original iMovie project without worrying about losing the ability to reburn the DVD in the future.
Also, a disk image file is not over 4.6 GB (for single0layer DVDs), so you can save drive space by deleting the larger iDVD and iMovie files.
You can also move the disk image files to another drive. The data remains intact in the file. If you try to move an iDVD project, you will be moving the container only, and iDVD will have to relocate the media files. If you delete, rename, change or move anything used in the iDVD project, iDVD will not be able to find it.
You can drag a disk image file from one computer or drive to another.
And, importantly for you, you can always burn another DVD disk from its disk image file, even years after the original iDVD project was made.
I keep disk images of all my projects on an external drive. Now that I have 123 of them, they do take up quite a bit of space, but it is worth it to be able to reburn any of them easily.
Sorry for the lengthy explanation, but now to how to retrieve your current DVDs. If your have a DVD that you can get to play on one of your computers, you can use Disk Utility to create a disk image file from that DVD. You can use Disk Utility to create disk image files of any DVD that you have created using iDVD. Then, you can burn more copies of the DVD from the disk image.
    See these for instructions:
To create a disk image from iDVD:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6733.html
To copy a previously burned DVD:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2059?viewlocale=en_US
To burn a disk image using Disk Utility:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2087?viewlocale=en_US
You should be using a good brand of DVD disk, such as Verbatim, Maxell, or Taio Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not recommended because their layers are thinner. You should also burn at a slow speed, 4x or less. I always use Verbatim DVD-R, burn at 4x most of the time, sometimes 2x if the movie is long or complicated. I have never had a burn issue.
Make more than one copy of each of your projects! I always make several of each of mine: one for each kid, one for my husband and me, an 'extra' one to have here at home, and I put one copy in a safe deposit box. Yes, very paranoid about losing my movies!
And NEVER put a stick-on label on your DVD disks. If you write on them, use the special CD/DVD markers and write only the briefest notation. If you want fancy labels, use the pre-labeled DVD disks that you can print to with a printer capable of printing to disks.
Hope this is helpful. Post back if anything is not clear, or does not help.

No, you can't turn the nic off!! How are you going to wake it when it's turned off?
Unfortunately if "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked,
then "Allow this device to wake the computer" will be greyed out.
I have another PC that WOL works (DELL) and it has all 3 mentioned checked!!!!!
I dont think "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" means turn off the NIC!!! I think it means enable power management. Maybe a real expert can chime in here.
    Hmm....what do I do next????

  • Cannot wake 'offline' clients

I'm trying to figure out why I can't awaken clients on my subnet whose ARD status changes from 'sleeping' to 'offline'. I have the correct ports open on my 10.4 Server firewall and my router's firewall. I also have Energy Saver on the clients set to awake for admin access. The best guess I can come up with is that I need to enable 'directed broadcast' on my router - but I don't how to do that. (My router is a 3Com OfficeConnect.)
Alternatively, is there a way to prevent 'sleeping' clients from switching to 'offline'?

An alternative to the WakeOnLan app is to download and install the ARD Activator app that is distributed silently by Apple.
You can find out more here: http://macenterprise.org/content/view/113/118/
It performs similar functions to WakeOnLan by activating a latent KickStart app that is buried in the ARD client. The KickStart app has been in the ARD client since ARD 2.2.
Another issue to look out for is - Mac portables have 2 sleep phases. When it initially falls asleep, it still registers as "Online". After about 10mins of snoozing Mac portables tend to go into a state of 'deep sleep' and for some reason the hardware WakeOnLan is disabled (even over Ethernet).
Until Apple comes up with a hardware solution, the ability to wake up Mac portables, depends largely on configuring them never to sleep. Although, to preserve the screen's longevity, its strongly advised to set the display to sleep.
