Loss of Image Info on Cinema Display

I recently jumped to a 2 year old G5 and 20" cinema display combo and am getting screwed.
Basically, my screen is not showing me what's actually going on with the files. The screen seems too contrasty / punchy / hot... I'm a graphic designer, and since I need to be able to (at least marginally) view on screen what information is in a file, this has made image manipulation nearly IMPOSSIBLE. My epson printouts DO show me this "lost" information, but I certainly can't work off of printouts alone for the life of this machine.... In the meantime, areas of an image that are as dark as 10 or 20% grey are showing up on screen as PURE WHITE. And this is probably only the loss that glaring enough for me to notice... (Although, when I watched a movie the other day, the blacks also felt WAY too dense, and seemed to eat many of the scenes...)
I've tried every calibration option the ACD seems to offer, to no avail. I've checked to make sure my video card works with my monitor, as answered in the affirmative with the following thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1125196&tstart=0
At this point I don't know if the problem is in my G5, or the monitor, or what....
Can anyone help?
Some more information that may be helpful/relevant:
1) The "hotness" is not application specific. It occurs in Photoshop, Quark, in PDFs, everywhere....
2) The G5 was refurbished when originally purchased.
3) Before I jumped to this set-up a few weeks ago, I was on a very reliable emac running OS9 (no snickering please...) and what I saw on the screen there was pretty bang-on with what I was seeing in my print outs and final files.
4) I'm using the same printer and scanning devises that I was with my emac, so I don't think they're the problem... but JIC, they are Epson Perfection 1640SU Scanner, and Epson Stylus photo 1270 Photo Printer.
Let me know If I've left out any key, relevant info.... And Thanks!

Make sure the "Enhance contrast" slider in the "Seeing" tab of "Universal Access" system preference is all the way to the left.

  • Urgent help please. Can't get image on LED cinema display.

My husband has a traumatic brain injury. His existing monitor went kaput yesterday, & I've been trying desperately to set up a new LED cinema display with his Mac Pro that was purchased May 2007 for the past 4.5 hrs without success. Can't get any image on it & don't know what else to try. Any suggestions please?

Can we assume that the graphics card has been replaced with one that has a mini display port, such as the Radeon HD 5770 or the Geforce GT 120? The originally shipped graphics card options for the 2007 Mac Pro do NOT have the Mini Display Port.
Does my computer have a Mini DisplayPort connector?
If not, one will either need an Atlona AT-DP400 adapter to connect the LED Cinema Display to a dual link DVI port of the graphics card OR to replace the graphics card with one that is equipped with the Mini Display Port.
    Review of the Atlona AT-DP400.
Also, does the Mac Pro have OS X 10.6.4 or later?

  • Funky Weird image on 23" Cinema Display; where can I find a service manual?

    Hi all,
I bought a 23" Cinema HD Display 'as is' on eBay; the seller had reported that its power light was flashing several times. I found the support article pertaining to this. Unfortunately I had no way to test it at home because it did not come with the power brick, so I did the next best thing. I took it to my local Apple Store and one of the employees hooked it up with one of their demo machines to see what would happen. It powered on, all right, but displayed this funky weird image where it was mostly black with a striped green edge and this very thin jagged strip that looked like the outline of a mountain going from left to right across the screen.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here--bad inverter board, or what? Also, is there a service manual out there I could download for this display? I have experience working on a wide variety of Macs, from the SE/30 and Classic on up to the newer Powermacs--replacing motherboards, hard drives, floppy drives, video cards, etc., etc., but have never worked on an LCD display or ANY monitor for that matter....
    Many thanks for your help!
    Sally

    Hi-
Here is how to take it apart.
That's about as far as I can get you. Would look for the obvious loose connection, burnt component on board, burnt trace, etc.

  • Urgent problems with image viewing on my 20 inch Cinema display???

I have a very urgent problem concerning my Apple Cinema 20 inch Display and my SpyderPro2 on my Mac Pro Intel Dual Core Xeon 2x 2.66GHz.
I have been using the Spyder for some years now, but recently I have been having big problems with the results.
I have a major contract with a jewellery company in London, where I clean up digital photos. Images that I have lightened up to look great on my Cinema Display have been reported by my client to look pretty dark on their PC's in their offices.
Some of these images show lines and grubby patches??? To check this I opened files in Photoshop and moved the levels 'black' slider down quite some way, and did see evidence of what the client could see at their end? It seems that when I have used a faded eraser brush it leaves a light patch in between the shadows of the jewellery. This shouldn't be visible to the naked eye though?
I must point out that when I use the eyedropper tool on images, to read the amount of grey or colour in the white areas around the peices, I am shown values of 1,2 or 4 maximum in the CMYK values. 4 percent out of 100 is nothing and should not be visible to the naked eye?
How is it that my clients PC's can see dark shadows and where my eraser brush has rubbed out???
I have tried many re-calibrations and also tested all of my older calibrations dating back a few years. I have also tested the same faulty images on Intel iMac's, an eMac, and a few PC's. On the iMac's I can just about make out the artefacts that my client can see, but nothing that I would deem as unacceptable.
I am at a loss as to the fault, but It may be the Spyder2 Pro's inability to calibrate my Apple Cinema display properly? I may lose my contract which I cannot afford to do, and I simply have to find the cause ASAP.
I have my Mac's in my office apartment next to two bay windows. I have vertical blinds there. When calibrating I have always turned off all the lights and pulled the blinds right back so that only the light from the two large window doors is coming in.
For graphic design the calibrations seemed to be okay for quite some time, but recently it is getting harder to achieve good results with the Spyder? This could affect all of my workflow which is very serious. But I must stress that overall the Spyder results are not terrible. I can see good colours and dark levels and in general across all of my calibrated profiles, the jewellery looks acceptable on my Cinema Display?
I did say to my clients that they should calibrate their PC screen properly but their offices have many Screens and they all show the same artefacts (some much worse than others)? I know that PC Screens are darker than Mac's but a 4% grey should not be visible????
As these are a web company the images will be seen by PC users around the world and most of these will have no calibration on their screens. What can be done to prevent this and what is the cause of this? I can't possible please everyone, but as a creative professional I have to be 100% certain that my workflow is at its best.
I need urgent help to solve this or loose valuable business? I hope that you are able to help solve this mystery.
I have just purchased the new Spyder3 Pro which I hope will give perfect results but I have to find out what the cause of this is. If some of the fault lies with the client, I can charge these for all the testing and calibrating I have done.
    Kind regards,
    Jason Conway

One thing you might want to try adjusting is the gamma setting in Displays Preferences color calibration area. Macs typically are set at 1.8 but PCs will often use 2.2. That could account for the difference.

  • Retina MacBook Pro + Cinema Display = Only 25% of images visible when opened

Every single time I open an image, I can only see 25% of it. I have to hit Cmd+, Cmd- to zoom in & out every single time. It's ridiculous. I think the problem might have something to do with the fact that the retina display has twice the pixel density. This is just a theory, but I'd bet money that it's the culprit. I just realized that the problem doesn't exist when I don't have my external monitor plugged in.
Here's what I see on the external 27" monitor:
Then after hitting Cmd+, Cmd-, this is what I see (this web form has scaled this image down, but you get the gist):
Can someone please tell me how to avoid this maddening annoyance? I've contacted Adobe Tech Support, and they can't help me with this problem. They have given up; they simply ignore my emails at this point.
I'm using the latest version of Photoshop CC on a fairly new 15" retina MacBook Pro with a 27" non-Thunderbolt Apple Cinema Display.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Ah, it's nice to have a friendly and knowledgeable person replying to my question for a change.
Here are my display settings from Mac systems prefs:
The problem exists regardless of the Application Frame setting or the zoom tool's Resize Windows to Fit setting. I'm using windows, not tabs. Here's another example of what I see when I open an image:
And here's what I see after hitting Cmd+ followed by Cmd-
It's really just an incredibly annoying inconvenience.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Image persistence on New 24" LED Cinema Display - Quick Reply needed please

    Hi
I have a new 24" LED Cinema display - delivered 14 days ago today (hence needing a quick reply!).
Yesterday I noticed image persistence down the entire left hand-side of the screen - should this happen on such a new display?
Should I return it / take it back?
    Thanks for any advice.
For what it is worth the image persistence is the left-hand column of the iTunes window - I can read the entire column from the top where it says "Music" down to the "Selected item" that appears above the album artwork window.
I do use iTunes a lot but certainly nothing out of the ordinary and often in reduced size mode or behind other windows. (i.e it does not sit in the same place all the time).
Since I took the screen out of the box the screen-saver has been set to turn on after 15 mins and the Energy Saver is set to turn the screen off after 20 mins (i.e I have taken screen saving measures).
Finally, I have done the "display an all-white image on the entire display" as per here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807) and after six hours of this the problem has improved, but certainly not gone away.
So, to return, or not to return, that is the question.
    Many thanks.
    Rob
PS - I bought this online at Apple Store - if I do return it, could I do this in person at physical Apple Store, or do I have to do it online?

I've had this same problem on my 24" iMac for some time (it's still under my AppleCare warranty, but it began doing this long ago). I searched these forums a year ago and never found anything about this, so I'm glad I found these posts here today.
I guess it's time to haul mine back into the store. Also I note that my screen has developed some dark areas, as if the fluorescent backlight has become irregular.

  • I have an old 30" apple cinema display (2005) I want to use as a 2nd monitor to a new iMac (2012).  I don't just want mirror image of iMac; what's the best way to do this?

I have not bought the iMac yet but will do so very soon and just want to make sure I have what I need to get everything setup including adding the old faithful 2005 30" cinema display.  Currently I am driving the old 30" cinema display with a macbook pro also purchased 2005 and happy to say I got a lot of good miles out of this rig.  What's the best way to connect the old 30" monitor as a second display for the new generation iMacs?
    Other Questions
I can find online new in unopened box a 2012 iMac 27" i7 with 1T Fusion Drive for $1899 no sales tax.  This seems like a pretty good deal since I notice the same is available from Apple refurbished for $100 more plus sales tax.  I know that they say the Fusion drive is a lot faster on 2013 models but some of the speed tests I reviewed online showed the 2012 i7 and 2013 i7 very close on speed for both storage and processing.  Any thoughts?
I don't like changing batteries so I would buy a separate Apple keyboard with numeric pad since it only comes with wireless keyboard.  I'm a trackpad enthusiast having been using my macbook pro trackpad with current set up; and I am prepared to buy the Apple trackpad and replace batteries every 2 months but I would greatly prefer USB connection and rechargeable trackpact.  I know Logitech makes one so if anyone is using and knows how it compares to Apple's I'm all ears.

You can use USB for the Apple trackpad.

  • LED Cinema Display 27 Random Loss of USB

I have a brand new 27" LED Cinema display connected via Mini Display Port to my 2006 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card.  The display's USB cable is connected to a USB port on the back of the Mac Pro.  My keyboard is the newest Apple extended keyboard (wired) that is plugged into the back of the monitor.
The problem is that randomly (about one out every 8 boots but with no pattern or rhyme-or-reason), I have no USB connectivity from the keyboard.  I am unable to enter my user name and password to log in.  While it is in this state I have pulled the monitor's USB cable from the back of the Mac Pro, waited 15 seconds or so and then plugged it back in.  This does not fix the problem.  The only solution so far is to force shut down the computer using the power button on the front of the Mac Pro, then disconnect the monitor's power cable, plug the monitor's power cable back in and re-boot.  So far 100% success with this process.  Somehow removing power from the monitor resets its USB bus.  I just don't think I should have to do this once or twice a week... or more.
So I have a solution but it is a pain in the rear and involves crawling under my desk.  I could try plugging the keyboard directly into the Mac Pro and abandon all use of the USB ports on the back of the monitor but would hate to give up functionality that I paid for.
This only occurs on boot... I have never lost USB connectivity while the computer is running if it boots and works properly... even after sleep.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Norby

I installed Mountain Lion last night. Playing around a bit before going to bed I noticed that my keyboard seemed to fade in and out, sometimes what I typed showed up, sometimes not. This morning I was using Messages, tried the camera. First I got a warning saying no camera was attached to Mac (built in iSight?!?!?!). The unplug/plug method didn't address this. Restarted Mac Pro, camera showed up but there was major lag, like it was someone's video sent to me from a bad connection not locally streaming video! Also, graphical anomalies kept popping up in the video. (a note: none of this was happening with my MBP with FaceTime camera after ML install)
    And then it hit me.
Due to the short span of the mini display cable on the LED Display, I have to use an extension cord for the MiniDisplay and USB. Removing the MiniDisplay extension cured my video issues. I removed the USB extension and put in place another USB hub testing my previous post. So far, with keyboard and Wacom plugged into the Displays USB, no issues. It's early though so who knows. I wouldn't mind trying a straight connection to a Mac Pro USB but Apple has made the cable far too short and working with my head next to the tower just isn't desired.

  • Extending Ddsplay image onto 2 x 20inch Cinema Displays.

    Hi,
I have two 20inch Cinema Displays, and a 15inch G4 Laptop. Is there a device available that would allow me to extend my desktop onto both monitors (not as a mirror of my desktop, but as a true extension).
    Example: Display (1) = Safari
    Display (2) = iPhoto
I hope I am communicating my question clearly. In a nutshell, one monitor would be used for one application, and the other running whatever else. In this config, my mouse would "float" from 1 display to the other, as if both displays were joined together, seamlessly.

If your laptop has a CardBus slot you can use it with a VTBook
<http://www.villagetronic.com/vtbook/index.html> for a second external display. The other display uses the laptop's DVI port.

  • Cinema Display not detected

I got my 20" Cinema Display back from repair today (backlight problem) and now I can't get my MacBook Pro to detect that it's attached. While it was at the repair center, I used a CRT as a second monitor. So today, I just closed the MBP (didn't shut it off, which I think is what cause the problem), disconnected the CRT, connected the ACD and opened the MPB back up. Completely black screen, with the little LED on all the time.
    So, troubleshooting:
    - The MBP still detects the CRT
    - ACD is detected by both a G4 and G5
    - A different 20" ACD is ALSO not detected by my MBP
    - Reset NVRAM and SMC
    - Booted MBP in safe mode
    - Booted MBP from startup CD
    - Tried various resolutions while the CRT was connected, thinking maybe it was stuck on one that's not compatible with the ACD
    - Moved and recreated the com.apple.windowserver.* files
I'm running 10.4.9 and here's what the graphics/displays info says, WITH the Cinema Display connected:

Been messing with this for four hours, and I still have a blank display. Any other ideas? From one thread someone mentioned replacing the logic board fixed a similar problem.

    UPDATE:
I just got back from my visit to a mac genius. Of course Murphy's law was in full effect! With my MBP connected to the cinema display in the Mac store, everything worked as it is supposed to.
Well, I rush home thinking that maybe mine would now work - - no luck! He did suggest that I try connecting analog with the provided dvi-to-vga adapter. This suggestion DID work! BUT, I want my video digital! That is why even though I was happy with the iBook G4 that I bought last year, I wanted digital video + expanded desktop!
I think I will make another reservation with the Mac Genius, but this time, bring my monitor. Will keep you posted...

  • Macbook Pro and 30" Cinema display for gaming?

Does anyone know if a Macbook Pro (17" i7 2010) would be powerful enough to drive the 30" Cinema display (or a Dell 30") specifically for gaming to a reasonable performance FPS with a game such as Call of Duty 4?
Would I have to knock down the resolution from the native 2560x1600 and if so is the image quality still acceptable or blurry? I realize I need either the dual link adaptor or the display port to achieve the max resolution but just wondering if it is asking too much of the graphics card?
Thanks in advance, any info much appreciated.
    Rick.

Hi. The graphics card will be able to handle it. I would suggest using a Min Display Port to HDMI adapter. Most new adapters will even transfer the sound too so you can use the speakers built speakers on the TV.
I often use my 2008 model MacBook Pro with a Mini Display Port to HDMI on my 62'' Samsung DLP. Perfect 1080p quality.

  • Calibrated, but too much contrast? Cinema Display 30"

    Hello,
I have a 30" Cinema Display at work an love it, but things have started to go a bit strange and I'm afraid something is off.
When I calibrate it (using apples built in tool) I have to peg the first two steps almost all the way to the bottom to get the apple logo to vanish, and after completing the calibration everything is VERY high contrast.
The logos in the doc are so contrasty and dark they are practically screaming!
I am using the monitor for processing images for print, so I'm really afraid I'm going to make some real mistakes here. I normally use apple's standard gamma, but switched to native because the image is a little lighter.
I'm hoping for some suggestions or advice, I'm at a loss!
    Thanks for your help!

Go into System Preferences/Universal Access and, under the Seeing tab, check that the Contrast slider is all the way to the left (Normal).

  • Give MacBook iSight priority over LED Cinema Display iSight?

    Hi all,
I have a new MacBook purchased in January 2010, which I hook up to a new Apple LED Cinema Display purchased a couple of weeks ago. Both the MacBook and display have iSight cameras built in.
I seem to be able to have both cameras working independently of each other within iChat and Photo Booth, but when I try and use a webcam on a website chatroom, no matter what I try, the camera in the display takes priority over the MacBook. I want the display camera to be disabled, and for the MacBook camera to work instead.
I have tried setting up the displays both as mirrored and extended, and tried moving the menu bar from display to MacBook and vice versa, but as soon as I enter a chatroom, the display camera is used.
I have tried altering the Flash settings in the chatrooms, but because both cameras are integrated and so have the same input settings, that doesn't work.
I have a feeling I am trying to achieve the impossible, but any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

    Hi,
    An Interesting one.
I am not sure there are any setting on the Mac to change this.
System Profiler is not "Dragable" to re-order the USB list.
Although it may be possible to use Terminal to re-order any list or priority that would be beyond my knowledge.
I would tend to go for the work around of using Photo Booth or iChat to make the unwanted camera Busy.

Are you sure it's a 30" display?  The 30" has a DVI plug.  They never made a dual-link ADC.
If it is a smaller display with ADC

  • Apple Cinema Display Dimming On Bootcamp Startup (found a fix!)

Hey guys I recently bought an Apple 27 inch Cinema Display to go along with my 15 inch Macbook Pro. Prior to purchasing the display I had installed Windows 7 Professional on my Macbook and used bootcamp to play games etc. I recently had to delete my bootcamp partition and reinstall it (ran out of space and didn't want to deal with winclone/making an image of my system). Everything went perfectly fine except the cinema display would always dim on startup and there was no way to adjust the brightness.
I talked to Applecare multiple times and they came up with zero solutions, but I found a fix myself. If you go into MSCONFIG, while in Windows 7, and turn off bootcamp services from starting at the launch of Windows 7 it doesn't dim the screen and everything works completely fine. I'm making this post to show people how to easily fix this problem and so Apple can fix whatever is making the bootcamp services dim the brightness of the cinema displays.
The problem is indeed 100% caused by the bootcamp services. If I start the computer without bootcamp services running there are no brightness issues. As soon as you open bootcamp services it instantly dims the screen and have to go back to MacOSX to fix the brightness.
Anyone have a clue why bootcamp services wouild do such a thing?
Thanks for your time, I hope this helps some people and I really hope apple looks into this problem.
P.S. Please discuss this topic and add any other ideas on hotfixing this problem.
ADDITIONAL INFO: I am using Windows 7 Professional 64x.

I traced the problem to hardware - I'm running an older Apple ADC 23" Digital Cinema display, so use and ADC to DVI adapter  - because of this there is a USB "pigtail"  which carries the USB from the rear ports on the monitor into the PC. This works fine in MacOS, but boot into Windows (and I tried XP running NOT in BootCamp and Windows 7 running IN BootCamp) and it seems to hunt and search for this "generic hub" (the USBs in the monitor) and upon not finding them appears to send some kind of signal to that hub, disengaging it or whatever, and dimming the screen. In Windows XP this happens right after the login screen appears, but in Windows 7 it won't happen until AFTER you log in (always thinking "Gee! Maybe this.... time....  ah.... ^%$#@!").
I tested my theory by using WinADC (the add on software that adds brightness controls for Apple ADC monitors to Windows XP - only 32 bit btw) on the XP machine - every time I started up WITHOUT that extra USB connection I was fine. When I started up with it... DIM happened. Then I tried starting it up without it plugged in.... FINE... then plugged it in AFTER full startup and loing... DIM happened. Plugging and unplugging it in in Windows would sometimes re-reveal the added extension for brightness (WinADC) so you could see how the USB was being searched not just for simple connections but for the brightness CONTROLS that are built into the monitors hub it seems.
So, I'm going to try your suggestion here, turning off Boot Camp services, but, for others if that doesn't work: Start up in mac OS, set your brightness, then UNPLUG any additional USB that is being run into the monitor and startup in PC - should be good to go.
