I have a problem opening a .pdf file hyperlinked in Excel 2011 file.
The message is: "No program is registered to open this file".

  • Is there a way to open old Excel 2004 files in Excel 2011?

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion, and installed the latest version of Office 2011 for Mac. THEN I discovered that some of my older Excel workbooks, created on my ancient PowerBook G4 back in 2007, WON'T OPEN. I get a message saying that there is an error, and then Excel crashes. I really need to get access to this workbook on my new computer! It opens just fine in older versions of Excel, no corruption issues at all. It's just when I try to open it with my new laptop and Excel 2011. Does anybody out there have a workaround for me? I have loads of data in this spreadsheet and now no way to access it! Help!

Make sure Office 2011 is fully updated. It shouldn't have a problem opening those documents.
When I open a 97 - 2004 workbook, it states that it needs to be converted. That may be what is crashing on your copy of Office.
Have you tried creating a new account and see if you can open them there.

  • Excel 2011 can't open old Excel 98 and Excel X files

I have lots of old Excel workbooks that were created on my Mac that go back at least as far as 1999. They were created in 1998 Excel 8.0 (from Office 98), 2000 Excel 9.0 (from Office 2001), and 2001 Excel 10.0 (from Office v.X) (I'm assuming these were the versions I used way back then because I have always used Office since the beginning of time.) Excel 2011 will not open these files. When I try to open these files, I get the message:
Excel could not open [filename] because some content is unreadable. Do you want to open and repair this workbook? If excel cannot repair the file, some data may be lost.
If I click Open and Repair, Excel hangs.
Of course, being a Mac user since 1983, these files do not have those ugly extensions hanging on the file name, but that really isn't the problem. I can add extensions (like .xls) to the file name, which changes the appearance of the icon, but Excel still hangs when trying to Open and Repair these files.
Can someone explain what the problem is?

Some of those are pretty ancient!
Did you ever install the converter?
Mac users using Word 2004 who receive a Word 2008 for Mac, (or Word 2007 for Windows) document, will not be able to read this without having the Open XML Converter installed, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.
    Go to this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
and click on the right under Most Popular, 'Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0.2'
This opens a window at the bottom of the page. Scroll that to the bottom and click on English.dmg, and it will download for you as a disk image, which can be installed in the usual way.
After installation you can open and read .xml formatted Word 2008 documents in Word 2004.
Update: This link  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976831  takes you to a newer version 1.1.3 (released Nov 10, 2009).

How to Recover an Excel File for Free
Check the Recycle Bin--if you've accidentally deleted the file, it should still be there unless you've emptied the bin, and you can click on the file and
    recover it.
Use the Auto Recovery Pane when you open Excel. Review the document recovery pane. If Excel has managed to recover your file, it will show in a separate
pane on the left-hand side. Identify your document in the pane, then click on it and choose "Open" to open the recovered file.
Try manually repairing the file. Click on "File" in Excel 2003 or the "Office" button in
Excel 2007, then select "Open" and click on the arrow next to the "Open" button. Click on
"Open and Repair" and choose from two options: click on "Repair" if you want to try to completely recover the file, or click on "Extract
Data" if you previously tried Step 1 and it did not work.
Search for the file manually on your computer. When performing a system search (click "Start" and select "Search" in Windows XP and
Windows 2000, or press the "Windows" button and "F" key in Windows 7 and Vista), make sure you choose "Advanced Search Options" and then check the "System and hidden files" check box. You may be able to find your missing
or corrupted file using this search: double-click on the file name in the search results to open it.

  • Excel 2011 VBA library question

    Hi
I've been asked to consider modifications to a series of Excel 2007/2010
workbooks in order to have them run on a Mac in Excel 2011.  The workbooks
have been developed on Windows over a number of years, and today run on
Win7, either 32 or 64 bit, using either Excel 2007 or Excel 2010.
The particulars are that the workbooks have a significant amount of VBA
code that that is much more complex that recorded macros. The thing that
has me stumped is that the code uses DOMDOC60 and XMLHTTP60 classes from
the "Microsoft XML, 6.0" library as it is shown in the References dialog,
aka  C:\Windows\Sustem32\msxml6.dll. The code is used to access webDAV servers
to retrieve and process XML files. All the other reference libraries used are
the same names on both platforms, so I expect that there might be some IFDEF
code to get the paths and the calls right, Mac v. Windows.
The big issue is that I can't find any libraries or documentation that
shows what to do on the Mac to get the equivalent classes. I'm new to
developing anything on a Mac, but I beleive that the functionality that the
code performs, i.e. GETs and PUTs, as well as XML parsing (nodes, nodeslists,
etc.) must be done in other apps on Mac.
The question is, what do I need to do to replace the lost functionality so
that I can make the workbooks functional on the Mac?
Your advice and help is appreciated.

    Hi Roger,
I've just landed in pretty much the same spot you were in last November.  I've written some VBA macros for Office 2010/Windows and am now trying to figure out how to make them work on Mac Offie 2011.  I'm using XMLHTTP and ADODB.stream to encode a file in base64 and post it to a server.  ALL the stuff I used to make this happen on Windows seems to be missing.  Did you ever figure out a solution for your problem?  Thanks.

  • How to open a lost file in Microsoft Office Autorecovery

Excel crashed and when it autorecovered my file upon restart it opened the original file with none of the data I had added.
To find the autorecovered file I followed the instructions here: How to find a lost file in Microsoft Office Autorecovery
But now I cannot open the file without seeing the following error code. This happens even if I change the file type listed in the previously mentioned tutorial.
Help!! How do I open the file!?

  • Excel 2011 version 14.4.8 running on an iMac gets "out of memory" messages.

HELP!!!   Excel 2011 running on an iMac with OS 10.10.2 and 16GB Ram gets "out of memory" messages.  When I monitor processes with "Activity Monitor", I am using less than half of my RAM.  The Excel workbook has many sheets and also some macros.  The basic workbook has been running for about two and half years starting in August 2012 without any problems until I upgraded to Yosemite in early December 2014.  Now I often have to restore the entire file content because it gets corrupted after not being able to save the file because of the "out of memory" message.  I can take a file and its content that ran fine a year ago and run it today and it will eventually get corrupted and get the "Out of memory" message after saving/quitting/re-opening the file any where from 6 to 15 to 25 times.  I think I need to have more memory allocated to Excel, but Yosemite doesn't provide any way for the user to interact with the memory management process.  I have also experienced the very same problem on my MacBook Pro that runs Yosemite.  I have worked file/path name length issues, closely inspected the macros that normally don't run except when activated with a user pressed button, and made sure I don't have any weird links within the workbook or even links to another file outside the workbook.  This problem seems to get worse as a continue to fill up the spread sheet with more financial data.  This Excel workbook is used to manage my club's finances; I am the club treasurer.  I have searched the internet for clues about similar problems and have found none!
My iMac is a 27-inch, Late 2009 with a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 Processor.  It includes 16GB of 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM.  The hard drive is a fussed 1TB rotating HD with 128 GB SSD.  This hardware has been running for about 27 months.  I am a very advanced Mac user that programs Excel and Filemaker and repairs Macs for others.

Given the caveat, have you tried reinstall of Office? Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted.  After upgrading to Yosemite I had to reinstall my Office 2011.  No crashes.
The current version of Office 2011 is 14.4.8.
First - find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768
Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011:
    http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/
    Then Reinstall from DVD
    Then enter your Product #
After successfully reinstalling Office 2011,  update your Office product using the Software update within Office called Microsoft Update or going to the Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.
It may take a few times before you get to final upgrade to current Office version.
It should be 14.4.8 as of current date.

  • How to run Excel 2011 from applescript for batch

Every night at 2:00am, I want to convert an Excel spreadsheet to CSV.  I'm doing this on a Mac, with Excel 2011.  The following Applescript works sometimes:
    tell application "Microsoft Excel"
              open "/Users/siemsen/PetesLookup/BPO.inventory.current.xls"
save active workbook in "BPO.inventory.current.csv" as CSV file format
      close workbook 1 saving no
      quit
    end tell
With the above script saved in a file named convert.scpt, I can execute it from a bash script using the command "osascript convert.scpt".  The bash script runs in a launchd job at 2:00am every day.
It works if Excel is already running on the Mac at the time the cron job runs.  If not, it starts Excel, which insists on displaynig a "Excel Workbook Gallery" dialog box.  No one is present on the Mac at the time, so no one clicks on the "Cancel" in the dialog box, so the Applescript times out and the cron job fails.
How do I get around this?  Can I somehow start Excel without the **** "Excel Workbook Gallery" dialog?  Is there some other trick that will allow the job to run unattended?

In Excel preferences (general tab) uncheck the checkbox that says "Open Project Gallery when application opens".  that should remove the startup dialog.

  • Opens as a copy in Excel 2011

There are a few files that are floating around my company that open as a copy when opened in Excel 2011 on a Mac.
These are old files and the original creator can not be contacted to find out if something special was done to it.
If opened on a Windows machine it does not open as a copy.
It does not appear to contain any macros or special VB code.

  • HT201250 Problem with recent Excel 2011 update

I installed an update to Mac Excel 2011 yesterday.  It complete sucessfully but the VBA component is now missing.  All Exel files with VBA code now cannot be opened.  The following message is shown for each:
Excel could not open xxxx.xlsm because some content is unreadable.  Do you want to open and repair this workbook?
I attempted to use the Time Machine to restore the Excel applicatiion but it will not run because it says Excel is open when it is not.
Has anyone had a similar problem with the latest update to Excel?

I bought a refurb ipad 32gb. I have noticed when itunes via wifi fails to do an app update, it screws the whole ios; thereby forcing ipad to go into recovery mode. I thought Apple learned the hard way not to allow one app to bring down the whole os!! This is the 5th time an app caused this. last time Apple forced me to reinstall Itunes, wasted 2 hrs.
I worked hard saving up enough funds to get an iPad. Yes, i even paid Applecare too. If this can be fixed, I want a replacement or a full refund.

  • MS Excel 2011 pivot tables and Lion

    Hi,
I run quite a lot of spreadsheets with pivot tables in MS Excel 2011. With the most recent version of Snow Leopard and all the patches from Microsoft it seemed to be working quite well. The minute after the upgrade to Lion, when I tried to refresh a pivot table Excel crashed, and it is crashing on every single file that I have. I also created new files from scratch, ran a new pivot table, and the second time I open the file it would crash upon refresh.
Apart from being extremely annoying, there seems to be no way around it for the time being; I really hope that with the next release of Office 2011 they fix it. Anyone has similar experiences or ideas?
    Thanks,
    Claudio

This is absolutely a problem after insalling Lion!  Office 11 was a great improvement over office 08 to handle pivot tables and now pivot tables are basically useless on Office 11, running Lion.  I confirm that munipulating pivot tables in Excel 11 causes excel to crash every time.
