Lost in translation?

Hello
In order to burn VHS (C) tapes to a DVD, I play the tape in my VCR which is connected via a USB cable supplied by OXX (I can't find their
homepage, but it's called DVD Maker). Then, using freeware called ShowBiz, the tape being installed is played on that software's monitor. Then I save my imported file. Different file formats are available (.MOV, MPEG, AVI, etc), but they all only install according to the NTSC format. I imagine the reason for that is that it is US-produced freeware.
This means that the PAL tapes I need to burn to DVD are converted not only from analogue to digital, but from PAL to NTSC. There are three
different quality settings, low, standard, and high. I select 'high' partly to compensate for the analogue-digital and PAL-NTSC 'translations' and
the loss of quality which would seem inevitable following these 'translations'.
'High quality' (MPEG) has the following settings: 1280 x 720, and 29fps. The quality of the final movie after burning to a DVD is reasonable - but not anything to write home about - given that it is the product of a VHS (c) tape that undergoes a couple of transitions before I have even placed it on the Elements 11 Timeline.
Consequently, I am considering buying either a Canopus ADVC-55 Analogue to Digital Converter, or a Canopus ADVC-110 Analogue to Digital Converter. I have also seen the Canopus AVDC-100 Analogue to Digital Convertor advertised somewhere. What I would like to ask is this: are either of the above converters likely to make a significant difference to the quality of the final product compared to the laborious process I now engage in? The converters are not cheap (at least, not here) and if the qualitative difference were minimal - for instance, if I can still detect running colours, a shaky clip, etc, that would deter me from buying one.
Thanks for any advice.
Steve

SteveH,
One of the beauties of going with an A-D bridge, like the Canopus, is that you will then be doing the Capture in PrE, so you should get the PAL version, with no conversion.
Also, as you are starting with VHS, the DV PAL Standard 4:3 is probably the best starting point for the Capture. Any of the HD Project Presets will not be adding anything to the Capture - you are best going with what you have to start, and especially when going to DVD-Video.
Good luck, and please update us on your success.

  • Just changed to Firefox and lost my translation Icon. Is there a translation that can be included in the tool bar

    With my other browser I had a google toolbar. On this bar was a translation and it gave me the option to translate my web pages. I deal with a Cuban company and require some things translated. When I go into the web site it is good but when I bring up Google search, which has a translate option, it bumps me off the web site. When I go in to the Web site it bumps the google tool bar out. Help..I have been using it for a long time with the Big E. is there anyway to add the google tool bar to firefox? I am enjoying Firefox but will have to return to the Big E to have access to this option.

  • Lost globalization translations on application change

    I've made a change to my application, by a process of taking a copy of the application, and making the changes to it (all I did was an export/import, nothing clever). However, when I import the updated application back over the existing application ID, I find that the language translations no longer work.
    The original application has translations for French, German and Spanish (I believe) but I have not done anything specific with them. My changes are explicitly defined as being English-only - the new fields and pages do not have to be translated.
    I know nothing about language translations - that feature was part of the application before I took over support of it, and the fact that I have no knowledge is one of the reasons the new code is English-only.
    Can anyone tell me what I might have done wrong, and how I should deploy my changes to preserve the existing translations? Once I have deployed the changes to this environment, I will need to further deploy them into production, from the (hopefully, now working!) test environment. A pointer to relevant documentation would help, although I have read the globalization chapters of the manual and they don't make much sense to me (I'm not sure how seeding translations figures in the case of a modification, and I've no idea how to deal with XLIFF files).
    Thanks,
    Paul.
    PS This is HTML DB 1.6 :-( I'm hoping there are no major differences in this area...

    Hello Paul,
    >> I've made a change to my application, by a process of taking a copy of the application, and making the changes to it
    By “taking a copy” I’m assuming you exported the original application, and then imported it under different ID. This is your basic mistake. As Scott pointed out, in order to maintain translations, you must import the application using the same ID.
    >> when I import the updated application back over the existing application ID, I find that the language translations no longer work.
    Your copy didn’t include any translation information in the first place, so importing it back, didn’t make any difference.
    >> if the translations are separate applications
    They are not exactly separate applications. You’ll not see the translated applications, and their application id, in the Application Builder application list.
    >> what does that mean for my new pages?
    As Scott mentioned in his post, if you are editing an existing pages, and don’t change any translated items, the changes will be reflected, in the primary language, in all the translated application.
    However, if you are adding new pages, they will be available only in the primary language application. If a translated application will try to call them, you’ll receive an error message, similar to the one you encountered - Error ERR-1016 Application "103" Page "1" not found (requested language="fr") .
    In order to fix that you’ll have to seed the primary language application and export the XLIFF file. As you are saying you don’t need to translate the new pages, just import back the XLIFF file – untouched – apply it and publish the translated application. The new pages, in the primary language, will be added to the translated application.
    Hope this helps,
    Arie.

    I am just updating my catalogs to LR3 and every time I do a couple of photos out of hundreds suddenly find themselves labeled "offline or missing."  I can see the photos on the hardrive in the correct spot but when I try to reimport them LR3 says that they are already in the catalog. I managed to switch the status of one by just messing around but I can't seem to duplicate the process. I tried synchronize but its telling me everything is allright. Mac pro, OS 10.6.4

    I will give it a shot but how do you do that. I searched rebuild previews in the help and got zip....Thanks for your advice!

  • 'Lost in Translation' to FCP

    Hi Guys-
    This problem has happened to me in two different projects. I had a Motion clip in FCP, right clicked, opened in editor, and made a few changes. When I went back to FCP, one of the objects was mysteriously gone. Everything else in the graphic played fine, except a certain thing was missing. The element appears in Motion and isn't locked, grayed, or unchecked. Any ideas? Thanks.
    -Jack

    Hi jack,
    what is the object that disappears. Sometimes I can get problems with imported jpegs or psd files. I have to open them up in psd and resave them, sometimes even cutting and pasting into a new document. Re-import into motion and then its all fine.
    Hope that helps

  • MX to CS5 Lost text with CMS

    Hello
    I am trying to edit a flash file that was done in MX. I only have CS5.
    When i open the file, save and export there is a slight problem. Once published and uploaded, a dynamic text box which is meant to load text from the CMS appears blank.
    Is there something which can be lost in translation when saving from MX to CS5?
    Any advice or clues would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Michelle

    I finally worked it out.
    I had to open it in CS5 and 'save as'  a CS4 and then save it as a CS5. This fixed my problems.

  • BPM 7.2, process translation guide

    Good day!
    I'm creating a process in BPM 7.2 and as I can see there is a feature to translate processes by using xlf files. But I was failed to find any documents elaborates the procedure of translation... If anybody have done that task I would be really appreciate the help.

    Hi Kirill,
    The official documentation about this feature will be avaialbale on the help portal with the SP02 release of 7.20, in the beginnig of March.
    In the meantime, you can follow this procedure to be able to translate language specific attributes (the formatting is lost, unfortunately):
    Translating Language-Specific Attributes in BPM
    When you model a process, language-specific content is automatically stored in a resource file. For different types of elements containing text, a corresponding resource file is created. These files are of S2X format and use the XLF file extension. To edit XLF files, you use the S2X editor in the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio.
    In SAP NetWeaver Business Process Management (BPM) translation is supported for the following elements:
    Element
    XLF File
    Located in Node
    Process
    <process name>.bpmn.xlf
    bpmn
    Task
    <task name>.task.xlf
    tasks
    Function
    <function name>.function.xlf
    functions
    Ruleset/Flow Ruleset
    <ruleset/flow ruleset name>.function.xlf
    functions
    Event Trigger
    <event trigger name>.eventdef.xlf
    triggers
    Reporting Data Source
    <reporting data source name>.eventdef.xlf
    reporting
    You have to translate only attributes that are flagged with yes in the Translate column of the S2X editor.
    The XLF files contain the texts in the language that you determined when you created the Process Composer project. For every language version other than this original language, you create a copy of the XLF file and enter the language-specific translations. Languages other than the original language are referred to as source languages.
    Translated texts are included in the build when you build your project and are displayed at runtime after you deploy the project to the application server. For example, you can see translated task attributes when you log into the Universal Worklist (UWL) to execute a task. Displaying the translated text depends on the language defined for the user with which you log into the UWL.
    If no translation is available, the task is displayed in the original language.
    Prerequisites
    You have created a Process Composer project and elements containing language-specific attributes.
    You have opened the Process Development perspective in the Developer Studio and have expanded your project in the Project Explorer view.
    Procedure
    Expand the src node and then expand the corresponding node containing the XLF file you want to translate.
    Copy the XLF file within its node.
    Number of copies depends on the number of languages you want to translate to.
    Add an underscore (_) and the corresponding two-character language code according to ISO standard to the name of a copied XLF file before the XLF extension.
    Example
    The name of the original process attributes XLF file is MyProcess.bpmn.xlf and you want to translate the attributes to German. You add an underscore (_) and de, which is the language code for German. The result is a file named MyProcess.bpmn_de.xlf.
    End of the example.
    In the context menu of the language-specific file, choose  Open With  S2X Document Editor .
    On the Header tab page, select a source language from the Source Language dropdown list.
    On the Resource Text tab page, select an entry relevant for translation and choose the Edit pushbutton.
    Enter the required translation and choose the OK pushbutton.
    Save, build, and deploy your project.

  • Tarnslation ist lost when updating application

    hello there,
    whenever i update my app at customers site, any translation of my app is lost. the translation of teh apex frameworks stays ok.
    i have to apply & publish the translation files again.
    the application is installed on a customers server,
    i do all the developing stuff at a different server.
    the whole application is translated in a seceond language; lets say french. language is determined by browser language.
    whever i finish a new release i transport the whole application, using the build in export/import features.
    after deployment of the upgraded app, i want the pages/items to be lokalized.
    so i start the translation process from the scratch:
    seeding the translatable text => at this point apex says that all items have to be translated. to me it seems that aplex has lost the old information about translation durung the update proces of my application.
    i can come around this problem by applying & publishing the the formerly uploaded translation files.
    but i think i'm doing somethung wrong during the deleivering process of a new version of the application.
    but what am i doung wrong?
    any help is welcome
    peter

    Please let me comment more since no attachment can be uploaded. Following are key steps I do:
    1) Build selection screen of two select options with this:
      lr_range = lr_selopt->create_range_table( i_typename = 'CRMT_PROCESS_TYPE' ).
      lr_selopt->add_selection_field(
        i_id                       = 'ACT_PROCTYPE'
        it_result                  = lr_range
        i_description              = 'Transaction Type'
      lr_range = lr_selopt->create_range_table( i_typename = 'CRMT_ACTIVITY_CATEGORY' ).
      lr_selopt->add_selection_field(
        i_id                          = 'ACT_CAT'
        it_result                     = lr_range
        i_value_help_structure_field  = 'CATEGORY'
    2) At method WDDOMODIFYVIEW, I update the description for example:
      lr_range = lr_selopt->create_range_table( i_typename = 'CRMT_PROCESS_TYPE' ).
      lr_selopt->upd_selection_field(
        i_id                       = 'ACT_PROCTYPE'
        it_result                  = lr_range
        i_description              = 'New Transaction Type'
    Then, if I click the sign button before select option and choose a sign, it gets dump.
    I know the calling of upd_selection_field interferes something, but I have to update screen in order to complying with user input.

  • Import translations

    Hello!
    I created page group (default language Polish) which is quite complex. I had exported and imported it many times and everything was ok. Then I added English translations and exported page group. After import on clients portal there wasn't any translated elements. In log, in "Modify system tables" section I found warnings:
    [Warning: ] context = wwutl_api_import_pronto.import_nls_strings user = PORTAL Unable to insert NLS string 10029911
    Of course on both portals (10.1.0.4) Polish and English languages are installed.
    What should I do or what am I doing wrong?
    Piotr

    Piotr,
    It looks as you lost the translation... eventually. To better know what has happened I'd suggest you to contact the Oracle Support.
    [Warning: ] context = wwutl_api_import_pronto.import_nls_strings user = PORTAL Unable to insert NLS string 10029911
    The ID should be exactly what you've lost. It is a warning, 'cause you haven't lost the default functionality.
    Maybe... as a wild guess... have you enabled the language polish on the Shared Objects Page Group? You might have created some things/objects in the Shared Objects Page Group and enabled the polish language (in the Source Portal) and in the Target Portal you haven't done the same. As I've said... the best would be to contact the Oracle Support... for further diagnostics.
    I hope it helps...
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • No thumbnails or playback of MOV files in Adobe Bridge CC

    Hi
    I recently downloaded and installed the latest version of Bridge from the Creative Cloud and I am unable to view thumbnails of .MOV files taken with an Apple iPhone5. I am able to open the file but there is no audio or video in the playback. Anyone else have similar issues? I am able to view these same files in Lightroom CC fine. I am using Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    Only thing I can think of is there must have been some kind of mixup in
    the transfer process. Here's what I did: I plugged her phone into our
    Macbook Air at home and transferred her stills and movies off from her
    camera (using iPhoto) to a connected portable hard drive. From there I
    copied and pasted the files onto a removable thumb drive. From there I
    brought them to work on my PC and copied them off to a portable hard drive
    there. Seems to me the MOV files got lost in translation somehow. It's
    possible I didn't do this correctly? I know with MY iPhone images and
    movies I copied them directly from my phone onto my computer (PC) when it
    showed up as a device in my device listing. It wanted to use iTunes for
    this but I bypassed iTunes and did it the old fashioned way. These are the
    files that I am able to view correctly on my PC at work in Bridge. So I
    guess I need to recheck my workflow here.

  • Problem with opening "Photoshop tools" in Bridge

    hello, when I use Bridge and I tried to use the photoshop's tools after selecting an image, photoshop doesn't open. could it be a problem of permissions? I use windows 7.

    If both Bridge and Photoshop scripts are checked, and computer rebooted since selections were made, then perhaps you need to reset preferences for Bridge.  Hold down the crtl key and start bridge.  You should get a reset window with 3 options.
    By a tool I am assuming something like Image Processor.  Sorry if I ask stupid questions, but believe me many times concepts get lost in translation to the screen.

  • Unable to open event

    i have an event with lots of projects on an external drive which fcpx 10.0.4 refuses to open.
    the size of the event is about 800 gb, digitalized vhs-tapes, the work of the last weeks…
    when i doubleclick it, fcpx opens it at first, but when the startup window comes to "loading compressor support" i can watch the spinning wheel of death and fcpx hangs up, i have to shut it down.
    when i open fcpx via the program-icon, it opens but doesn't show the external drive with my project. it is still on my desktop, when i try to open the event by doubleklicking it - with fcpx open - fcpx says "event cannot be opened". the same with the event in the backup-folder and in the "old versions"-folder.
    i made a copy of the external drive (1 tb) and tried the same with the new one, same issue, cannot open event.
    one external drive is fw 800, the other usb.
    i made a few restarts, i repaired permissions, i deleted preferences (both fcpx and compressor), i used onyx, i reset the power manager, i deleted the last project i made in the event as this may have caused the trobles, still the same.
    the work of the last weeks is in danger, i'm worried to lose the projec, any idea is appreciated.
    thank you,
    wolfgang

    hi,
    maybe its getting lost in translation, but I'm not understanding quite what you are saying. You say uyou have Projects in an Event? Projects and Events will always be in separate folders and shoukdnt be together.
    You cannot open an event or project by double clicking its icon. Rather you boot fcpx by clicking the applicaiton icon. When its opening the application then looks at all your hard drives and looks for the folders 'Final Cut Events" and for Final Cut Projects'. These must be at the root level of your drives ( or in your Movies Folder on the drive where your User account is) or it wont find them.
    There have been some other reports here of events and projects not loading on drives that have folders called "video". There might be some other things that cuase it to hang. If you can move all other folders on your external drive into something else just temporarily, and make sure Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects are visible. Then boot fcpx and see what happens

  • File window not updating modif. dates – and mysterious parallel universe discovered

    The day started innocently enough when I tried to edit some <meta> content on a site I'm building and then saved my work. Little did I know...
    DW's "File" window refused to update the "Modified" column of the files I worked on.  Open and closing the files shows that my changes have been recognized and incorporated into the HTML, and the files show up with correct modification dates in Finder (I'm on a Mac). They just won't change date in DW.
    When I upload the modified-but-not-redated-in-DreamWeaver files to my remote site, they appear with the incorrect dates on the server, but a text comparison in DW shows that my local and remote files are synched.
    Now for the truly weird part: when I run the site in Safari (after flushing its cache), a Source check shows the old code is still operational.  (I also changed the titles of the pages in question to quickly confirm which version was being displayed. This check shows the old title displayed.)
    Here's the site address:  http://www.bearriverbooks.com/index.html
    Now for the truly, truly wierd part.  I have a parallel site ( http://www.queen-of-the-northern-mines.com/index.html ) which contains copies of the bearriverbooks.com files. These files, too, show the wrong modification dates in DW's "Files" window and on the remote server – but they display correctly. Anyone who wants to check can compare page titles, which are longer in the later pages with correct code.
    I checked the remote site addresses in the "Manage Sites..." center.  I have not crossed my wires there (though I can smell a few arcing badly in my brain.).

    I am having the same issue on a Mac 3.4Ghz i7 running Mac OS 10.7.  I have Dreamweaver CS 5.5 v.11.5 Build 5344.
    I have a linux webserver, running ProFTPD v.1.3.1
    Both my mac and my linux server are set to the correct date and time.
    And ls on the linux servers tells me the files have the correct modified date and time, but this is getting lost in translation to dreamweaver when I view the remove server in the File tab.
    Any help appreciated.
