Lost Purchased Content

Through inexplicable pilot error, I lost my entire iTunes library. I managed to get most of it back, but all content purchased from iTunes (music, bonus videos, booklets etc) is missing. Well, it shows up, but with the little exclamation mark that tells me it's not really there. How can I get all my stuff back?
I back up to an external drive with Time Machine almost daily, so I know I still have everything. I tried rstoring using TM, but it didn't appear to work. Help, please, in plain English.

This should help.

  • Has any Coldplay fan lost purchased content within iTunes, I have recently noticed my Coldplay Live 2012 purchased on iTunes is gone from my iCloud library and no longer available for purchase ! A bit strange considering there new album just went on sale

Recently I have noticed my iTune purchased concert movies after being put back in the cloud are currently missing.
I have never had purchased content from iTunes vanish from my iCloud library and also not be available for purchase on iTunes.
When I had Apple personnel attempt to push the content back to me, they could not find Coldplay's Live 2012.
Even more strange considering their new album just went on sale and renewed interest must be prompting fans to review their collections.
A beautifully shot concert film is missing, a sad situation to be sure!
Thanks for any iCloud wisdom and other fans noticing the same thing.

  • Lost purchased music after restore

I had to do a restore. iTunes said it was backing up my iPhone and then I did the restore based on the backup, but neither my apps or purchased music had been restored. I had a load of music, that I paid for. Is there some where I can go to download all my lost music with out re-paying?

Why is it not in your itunes library? If you purchase any content on your phone, you MUST File>Transfer purchases to get the content into your itunes library. The itunes content sync is ONE WAY: computer to phone. You can re-download purchased apps for free. For the rest of your purchased content, contact itunes support, plead your case, beg...they "may" let you re-download it, but the decision is theirs:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
For future reference: the iphone should NOT be used as a storage device, things can & will happen. If you purchase content on your phone, ALWAYS File>Transfer Purchases as soon as possible. Likewise, your itunes library should be regularly backed up.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

  • I lost itunes on my computer and lost downloaded content that I payed for. How do I get it back?

I lost itunes on my computer and lost downloaded content that I payed for. How do I get it back?

When you say that you lost iTunes do you just mean the program or your content ? Have you checked to see if the content is still on your computer but not in iTunes ?
If not then do you not have a backup of your purchases on, for example, external drives or CDs or DVDs ? If you have then you can copy that onto your computer and add it back into iTunes. If you havn't then if they are still available in the iTunes store (and content is occasionally removed so you should make/maintain your own backups and not rely on re-downloading) and if you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to purchase them, then you should be able to re-download apps and ibooks, and if you are in the US music and TV shows, for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . If you are not in the US and you want to re-download music or tv shows then you can try contacting Apple and asking for a re-download, but they are under no obligation to let you : http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/contact/

  • How do I get new iPod to sync purchased content on existing library?

I recently bought a new iPod to replace an old one that was dying. I want to sync my existing library including my purchased content onto the new iPod and won't be using my old one anymore. Is there a way to do this? I got a message telling me some songs couldn't be sync'd because they were not authorized?

You should be able to dock the new iPod to iTunes & iTunes should do the rest. Since you are getting a "not authorized" message, have you simply tried to reauthorize any of the problem songs? iTunes seems to sporadically loose authorizations on random purchases for folks with no real explanation. Reauthorization should straighten things out. I know for me, I lost authorization on about 100 purchases on an iTunes upgrade & all I did was reauthorize one of the problem songs & the problem was resolved. Hope this helps.

  • Lost purchased music .

My wee mac mini had the so called 'spinning ball of death' and I lost a whole lot of my purchased music . I have since bought a new imac (the White one)and I was in the Apple store today asking how I could get my music back and onto my new mac . The store assistant said I just do it using the deauthorise computer from the drop down menu at the top of the computer but it wants me to click on the song / album and do it that way - but the songs are not on the computer . Does anyone know how I can get my lost music ? Thanks in advance .

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service
If you have an iPod that has the songs on it, the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

  • HT204406 Lost purchased music after update

    Hi,
I updated my iphone just last week after 11 months of not updating. I have just noticed that since the update I have lost music that I have purchased from itunes. I don't know how much music is missing, however it seems to be quite  a bit of recently purchased music. How can I retrieve this music? When I go onto iTunes and look at songs I know I have purchased it says "buy now" not "install" or "download" so it looks like it will charge me again of I try. I won't be impressed at all if I have to purchase all the music I'm missing again. Not only that, I don't know how much music  is missing.
Please tell me there is a way to get it all back!

  • HT201272 Trying to download lost purchases and it is not working...

I am trying to download my previous music purchases from iTunes.  Some of my music was backed up on an old drive and a lot of the newer purchases were lost.  It says that those files were "downloaded" and I am unable to re-download them. Is there some other way I am able to redownload the purchases that were lost?  Thanks!

If you have the files or partial files somewhere on your device the iTunes store will tell you that they have already been downloaded.  You can try to delete them from your library by holding Option and delete keys.  Then if the store does not detect them,  I think you can fool it into downloading them again.  They say that your purchases are always available even if you delete them.
IF YOU DON'T SEE THE FILES-
    HERE'S WHAT APPLE SAYS:
Note: Downloading of previously purchased movies is available in the United States only.
Open iTunes 10.6 or later on your computer. (You can download the latest version of iTunes here.)
If you're not already signed in, click Sign In, and enter your Apple ID and password.
After you've signed in, click Purchased on the right side in the iTunes Store under the QUICK LINKS section.
From your Purchased page, click the tab for the content type you're looking for (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Apps, or Books).
Click Songs or Albums to change the page view and All or "Not in My Library" to view your purchased content that currently is not downloaded on your computer.
Click the download icon to the right of each item to download that item.
    Notes:
To download previous purchases on a computer, your computer must be authorized for the Apple ID that was used for the original purchase. For more information about iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization see, this article.
If they are offered for purchase in 1080p, you can download previously purchased 720p HD TV shows and movies in 1080p. Learn more about downloading in 1080p.
Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer on the iTunes Store. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.

I lost purchased music on my computer that was purchased in the last 4 to 5 months because of virus. I did not back up the few songs I purchased on cd. I also lost all data on my Ipod nano and had to restore it. How do I download these purchases I lost?

Go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the Purchases link under the Quick Links. From there you should be able to re-download some or all of your purchased content. Note that not all content has been licensed for re-downloading in all countries at this time; you can see what content you can download here:

You can also re-download content using an iOS device.
    For more information, see:

This if course will not apply to songs you did not buy through the iTunes Store.

  • Play iTunes purchased content without internet connection on Apple TV

I have this issue, If I am not connected to the internet, I can play my purchased content into iTunes on my Mac, but I cannot play it on my apple TV. as soon as I try that it attempts to connect to the internet and eventually it tells me the device is not authorized to play content. Now the apple TV is authorized to play the content just fine when I have internet, but for some reason it doesn't when I am not connected to the internet. Again this is content shared through Home sharing from my iTunes library.
As well I have only tried it with movies and music that I have purchased, not with rented content. So It would only make sense for me to be able to play my purchased content from my iTunes library regardless wether or not I am connected to the internet.
    Any ideas?

Sep 11 2014: No one replied to this (or posted a response to any of the similar queries) and I would like to have had this information earlier this week so I am posting for all future inquiries.
History: Internet not available for two days (switching providers). I tried to stream from my MacBook Pro through appleTV to my home television; and I received a "not authorized" error message for any iTunes PURCHASED content.  Also tried to AirPlay from the laptop to the TV and content is not viewable.  Spoke with the always helpful and amenable apple support tech and...
You CANNOT stream from/through appleTV or airplay from your computer to a home TV (or any unauthorizable device) without an internet connection.  Period.
Apple has determined that it's okay to view iTunes-purchased content on your 17" laptop or 21.5" iMac or iPad or iPhone or any device not connected to the internet (e.g. on a plane, etc.) BUT viewing on a 21.5" 3rd party television would be a problem.  It does not make sense of course.  And is especially vexing since the old appleTV also STORED content which meant you could watch without an internet connection.  And I trust that apple will quickly resolve this software/programming "problem" since some day the internet will crash for long enough for apple to be bombarded with a LOT of very angry customers who will not understand why they cannot play the movies they purchased on their home televisions.  apple, what are you trying to prevent?  I can take my laptop to a local bar and screen RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK on the bar's 105" monitor (as long as I can connect to the internet) but I cannot watch the film at home?

  • Lost purchased items when adding another apple tv to our network

We have had an apple tv working perfectly in a downstairs bedroom for about a year. I just bought another apple tv for our upstairs living room for xmas, and was told at the apple store that all i had to do to have them view videos from each other was to add them to our home network and sync it to our itunes on our home computer. i added the upstairs ATV to our network, and synced them both to my laptop, which i had never done for the downstairs ATV. now my downstairs ATV is completely empty, except for a couple of videos i had on our laptop. I can see all of our content that we had purchased for our downstairs ATV, over 100GB worth, on our iTunes but they're showing up in grey. i don't think they are sitting on our laptop or on the downstairs ATV. how do i recover those programs? they don't see to be available for re-downloading on iTunes. i'm bummed because we had a ton of programs on there. help!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
There wasn't really anything wrong with the advice you were given from the store, unfortunately you chose to replace your primary library with the library on your laptop, whereas what you should have done is add it as a secondary library.
    (Please excuse my unsupported nomenclature)
I suspect if you remove the laptop library as a primary library and re-link your original library as a primary and then add the laptop as a secondary library, you will once again have access to your purchased content.
    See This
Additionally, may I suggest doing something about only having your purchased content on the tv, it's not a good idea and can easily be lost, you may want to let it transfer to your primary library.

  • Lost purchases- redownload?

Last night, I opened up itunes and on the left side bar there was an icon for 'home sync'. I clicked it out of curiousity and it ended up deleteding my entire library and playlists. So, all the songs and apps I've purchased in the past few months are gone, I have searched for them on my computer and can't find them. Is there any way to re-download the things I purchased? HELP!!

If you didn't make a back-up of your music/movie purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do when you make your purchase) then I'm sorry to say that I'm sorry to say that the policy on music/media purchases is that you only get one download: iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
The licensing of Purchased applications allows for them be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
If you have an iPod that still has any of your purchases on it you'll find details in this article on how to transfer them to the computer: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Failing this, you could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. • Purchased content spontaneously dissapeared

I just purchased my first iPod touch along with my first iTunes application download (Spore Origins) this weekend. The game seemed to download fine and was transferred to by iPod the next time I sync'd. This morning, when I sync'd again, it removed the game from my iPod, and no longer lists it under the applications.
I'm using iTunes 8 under Vista. I've searched for *.ipa files (and found the others that show up under my Applications), but my purchased content wasn't one of them. I haven't emptied my trash for a while, but it's not in there either. I have absolutely no idea how or why the content was deleted - the only thing I did was sync my iPod.
I reported the issue, but from what I've seen, I don't have high hopes from Customer Support. Is there anything else I should do to try to recover my app? I realize now that I should have immediately backed it up, but I never would have expected iTunes to spontaneously delete paid content like that.

Just purchase the app again. It will ask you if you want to buy...say yes. Then it will say that you've already purchased it, would you like to do so again "for free". Say yes. It will reinstall it. I've done this numerous times with the crashing app fiasco thanks to one of the previous wonderful apple upgrades.
I don't know why you lost it though.
