Lots of fonts messed up. /etc/fonts/ dissapeared :s

I started up arch today and went to open something in mousepad, i noticed that monospace was messed up so i ran "fc-cache -fv" as root and normal user again. Then rebooted now there are more fonts that have messed up like sans etc.
Anyone know how to fix this? Here's the output of fc-cache.
[ash@breakage ~]$ fc-cache -fv

I also noticed on starting up arch it gives an error something like "unable to load default font"
Edit: Also just noticed that the /etc/fonts/ folder has dissapeared.

  • Embedded fonts dissapear (a bit complicated, read on...)

    This is the actual case:
There is an SWF which contains just a font to be used by many other SWFs, it is here:
    ./SharedRessources/ComicFont.swf
Then there is one SWF which imports this font for runtime use:
    ./Selector/Selector.swf
And another one which also imports this font for runtime use:
    ./Menu/Menu.swf
They both import the font "for runtime use" and this, relative path: "../SharedRessources/ComicFont.swf".
This works for both Selector.swf and Menu.swf quite well. The font is displayed correctly.
BUT now there is this one:
    ./Everything/Everything.swf
This one loads Selector.swf and Menu.swf BOTH. The result is: The embedded font dissapears!
The funny thing: If I only load ONE of them, the font is visible.
So: Having 2 SWFs loaded simultaneously which make use of a font which is "shared for runtime use" destroys it for both.
Anyone encountered this problem yet? Any simple workarounds? The not-so-simple workaround would be to do it all directly via Actionscript and letting the Container hold all the ressources. But this would just be very comfortable.
OR could this even be filed as a bug?

After fiddeling around with the code, I actually found a solution:
The Font is embedded as a class, "ComicFont". So using the Loader class the usual way to load more than one module that uses this Font will cause the ComicFont class to be overwritten (and thus lost to the module loaded before)
I ran a test like this for every module loaded:
for each (li:LoaderInfo in loaderInfos) { // for simplicity: Imagine I have all LoaderInfos of all loaded submodules here
      trace ("Has class ComicFont? "+li.hasDefinition('ComicFont'));
Doing it the nomal, lazy way, this would output:
    Has class ComicFont? false
    Has class ComicFont? false
    Has class ComicFont? false
    Has class ComicFont? true
So it seems just the last module actually contained the ComicFont class. No wonder the font disappeared for all the other modules.
The "trick" was to set the applicationDomain inside the Loader:
    var ld:Loader = new Loader();
    var context:LoaderContext = new LoaderContext();
    context.applicationDomain = ApplicationDomain.currentDomain;
    ld.load(new URLRequest(swfName), context);
Now the fonts appear in every module and the output of the loop above is:
    Has class ComicFont? true
    Has class ComicFont? true
    Has class ComicFont? true
    Has class ComicFont? true
I hope this could help someone...

  • Installing a lot of fonts

Hopefully not to Off Topic - when installing a lot of fonts (2000+), would you [Install] or [Install a shortcut/copy]? Does either slow the system down more than the other? PC/Win7/CS6

None. CS3 will work with your basic system fonts. Those fonts are extras.
That said, they are great fonts, worth several hundred dollars. Use them instead of web freebies, which can cause problem due to poor construction. The only ones I don't load in are the Asian fonts.

  • Fonts dissapearing, or not displaying correctly?

So I have a 17 inch MB Pro and recently I have been having font issues. I don't really know what happened, it just sort of started. When looking at some fonts, such as the default Safari font, or the Subject: line in mail.app, appear like a bunch of numbers, and other random things. I thought that this was because I was somehow missing certain fonts. So, I checked http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301332, and found that I was missing a few fonts, mainly Comic Sans MS and some Asian characters. So I downloaded them, and installed them in the corect directories. But I still get the text garbled problem. I was wondering if anyone has a solution? Am I still missing a vital system font? Or is their something more serious wrong? Could one of my fonts be corrupt? And more importantly how do I fix this? I could not find a Apple sponsered font download package. Does it exist? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you would like me to provide more info, screen shots, etc, respond with request.
    THANKS!

You may have damaged fonts then. Follow the instructions at the bottom of my article, Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, to replace all of the fonts supplied by Apple with fresh copies from the OS X installation disks that came with your Mac. Then once again, clear the font cache files.
The link, or one of the links above directs you to my personal web site. While the information is free, it does ask for a contribution. As such, I am required by Apple's rules for these discussions to include the following disclaimer.

  • Lots of fonts to manage

I've collected a large number of fonts over the years. I estimate over 30,000 of them. They are in serious need of something better than Finder to deal with.
Some of them are damaged (Finder/System crashes when I try to view them).
    Many are duplicates.
Some have their names missing (internally).
    You get the idea.
I'm looking for an application to help with both fixing them and cataloging them. What do you suggest?
    Gary

I guess I'm confused as to how the name of the font could be missing internally, unless it was modified (and that's not easy when you don't know what you're looking for in those files). But it is possible that some of your fonts are damaged or corrupted.
Back in the OS 9 days, there was a program called FontAgent Pro that had the ability to "find, repair and organize all the fonts on your drive." It's obviously not sold anymore, but I do see a copy available on eBay for FontAgent 8 Network Edition of it (although you don't have to use it on a network):
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/120843151553?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m15 55.l2649
There was also Extensis Suitcase 8, which was for activating and manging your fonts in programs; it didn't have any feature to repair fonts. I've heard good things about FontAgent Pro for it's repair abilities, and varying things about it's actual font management abilities. Suitcase was the best-selling font manager back then, so maybe you'd want to get both and use FontAgent to try to repair your fonts, and Suitcase to manage them. I see a listing for Suitcase 8 on eBay, from the same seller as FontAgent:

  • Most fonts dissapear on Mac Chrome

    Here is my site
    http://www.crmbz.com
If i load on my mac using Chrome the majority of the fonts are not visible. If I hit refresh they then become visible. Im lost??? Works fine on safari on Mac. Just not chrome until i refresh. Also i removed my brief video that plays within the phone and fonts show up ok. So think it has something to do with video embedd. How can I fix this?

    Hi,
I'm having exactly the same problem on a couple of my sites. Chrome won't load fonts, whereas safari and firefox do it fine. I don't want to add a preloader widget as jermerqua did.
I've attached some screen shots of what it's showing and what it should be. It's affecting the bold on the Rosemary English site and all the (Montserrat font) text in the lightbox pop-up.
    How can I fix it?
    Thanks, James

  • I updated from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 and ever since Firefox has run somewhat strangely. In particular when on sites with a lot of images like Facebook, etc

Hello, I am writing as I am experiencing some issues with my favorite web browser after updating to Windows 8.1. Here are some details. I updated from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 and ever since Firefox has run somewhat strangely. In particular when on sites with a lot of images like Facebook. It is like there is some kind of Flikr effect between the desktop and the images and between the images and the browser (almost like old 16 bit video games flikering). It is not too bad but it is an issue. I have tried resetting firefox and restarting the computer. I haven't tried a repair, and I haven't done an uninstall yet.

thank you for helping, the issue seems to have been caused by the hardware accelerator

What a mess.   Ok so I ckecked out MacKeeper and supposedly ran a scan on my computer that came back with critical issues.  I used MacKeeper to clean but of course it won't really clean unless you purchase.  Now my browser is mess up so that FaceBook and YouTube won't display properly and on top of that it's still hanging.  Safari seems to be working but I use Firefox as my default.  Can I back up to where I was before I downloaded MacKeeper?

  • Font Book: Managing Fonts, Duplicates, Warnings etc... Need Help!

    How this all started...
I have a lot of fonts. I use them for design purposes, and recently added a bunch of new ones.
As a result, I had a problem with an Adobe program and the font displayed in the workspace.
I figured out which one caused it and deleted it. (I've never used it before, and it wasn't a common font, so I didn't really care).
    Problem with that solved.
So I figured that I ought to go through Font Book and check everything else and started Validation (under User).
I had several Errors, Duplicates and Warnings.
I (maybe naively) allowed Font Book to "Resolve Duplicates".
QUESTION 1 (a) (b):  Could letting Font Book resolve duplicates create any problems? and how does it decide what to trash?
I also let Font Book move all the Error fonts to my empty Trash Folder.
    - I then moved all those to an empty folder on my desktop.
I then moved all the Warning Fonts to another empty folder on my desktop.
So now, in User fonts, there are currently no problem messages.
This is where it gets a little trickier...
In "All Fonts" or "Computer" there are no caution symbols adjacent to any fonts, but if I run Validation, I get a lot of duplicate fonts.
    For example... Arial exists in:
    Library/fonts
    User/Library/fonts
    Library/Fonts/Microsoft
QUESTION 2: Do I need to address these? and if so, will that have an effect on any programs that use those fonts?
    * I did some research on this, and found an article at Mac World, discussing this, but I don't feel any better/wiser after reading it or the comments...
"Problem" since resolving duplicates and/or moving warning and error fonts (from User):
Since I resolved duplicates, and moved the error and warning fonts, I've noticed some "minor" changes in appearance with websites.
Such as in Hotmail, and a website that I'm a member; the font displayed is now just slightly different.
Albeit, the difference is very subtle, (but as a designer, I noticed this right away) and my concern is how this may affect any design work I do, if somehow the change I'm seeing is more of an error.
    * I have to make an assumption that its a font used in scripts (like Arial, Helvetica, etc, etc) that use my fonts for display.
QUESTION 3: So the big question is, how the heck do I address that now???
    About the Warning Fonts:
For the most part, the fonts that came up as "minor warnings", showed the message 'kern' table structure and contents.
    - I know that "kern" is suppose to be the spacing between characters.
QUESTION 4: So, why does Font Book care and warn about the "table structure and contents" of font spacing between characters, for any font???
QUESTION 4b: If that's NOT what that means, then I'd appreciate a plain English definition (perferably a source from Apple directly).
    Caches:
I'm seeing changes on the fly with fonts (and the display on websites), if I try and move fonts that had warnings like Arial styles or Helvetica styles back to my User Directory, so I'm guessing that Font Caching isn't affected by this.
If anyone is going to suggest that I deal with the font cache (since I've read several questions on this topic already), I'd appreciate some explanation about WHY I would need to address font caches and HOW they might be affected in respect to your suggestion and the problems I'm having.
    Additional Information:
    I use a MacBook, Mac OS X 10.6
~ If there's some other information that you may need from me, then please ask away... I need to figure this out, and Font Book is driving me crazy!!!

Yes hindsight is 20/20. I realize now that I should not have allowed FB to do what it asked. (But that's a moot point now).
Having a large number of fonts is something I've always had for design purposes. I never had issues with fonts on a PC, and didn't expect these sorts of problems on a Mac. And how is someone suppose to know NOT to trust a pre-installed program that's suppose to MANAGE your fonts???
I don't touch the system fonts. I am well aware that they can't be deleted, nor do I add any fonts to that directory.
I agree... I need to narrow down the issue. That was the whole point of posting this!
I do keep backups of my system and files. I have considered just replacing the font folders with what I had before, but it just brings me back to where I had all the warnings, errors and duplicates... And I'm not entirely sure if and how that could affect the font caches, and if I would need to then address those. I've been researching this quite a bit, but so far, all I've found is complaints or questions from people with similar problems. For whatever reason, very few people seem to want to offer help with this kind of problem (but I thank you for at least trying)...
With Dreamweaver, its not quite that simple. If it was, then I wouldn't need the help. Even if we disregard the issue I have with Dreamweaver, the problem also exists on some websites, webmail, etc. Websites (and Dreamweaver) use standard font families and display their fonts from YOUR installed fonts. The font problems I'm have online are not missing fonts, they are just not the same font in size or appearance that they were before (and no, my webmail, and these websites didn't change. I had someone give me some screenshots to confirm). But I can't figure out exactly where the problem is, because it appears that I DO have the standard fonts. It could be that FB removed a version that was better than what was left behind, or it could be something else.... I have no idea anymore. I'm just getting more frustrated.

  • Font problemo

    Hi guys,
i've had a problem with Arial in the text generator for some time.. it is only available as italic, even though every other program on my machine can access the plain version.
It shows options of plain, bold etc, but will only ever give me italic.
Not a huge prob as I prefer Helvetica to Arial, but now I've imported a client's supplied font and bingo same issue..
I'm on FCS 2 fully updated to whatever the last version is.. I've had the Arial problem for over a year, at least..
Oh, the client's font is an otf... most of my fonts are ttf.. Also I have a lot of fonts - so many that I had to disable a bunch because there were too many for photoshop to access (CS1)..
    Any ideas?
    Pete

Pete, FCP is famously limited in the number of fonts it's simple text generators can access, however that limitation does not extend to Boris Title 3D and some third party test generators. Your simplest option (and best option if quality is an issue) to meet your client request is just to use one of those generators instead. Boris Title 3D is far far superior to the basic Text generator (and it does 2D text just fine by the way, you don't have to start messing about).
Regarding the font issue itself. The Font Book application that is included with OS X can be used to scan your installed fonts for possible corruption or font duplication which may cause issues, thats what I meant by verifying with Font Book.
You might also want to try trashing your font caches to see if that fixes the issue... instructions on that can be found here:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071026081555971
Lastly, I have to say, a fresh clean install is awesome.
    Best
    Andy

  • [SOLVED] xelatex weird font display issue

    Hello all
I was playing around with fonts on my system today, and noticed that, all of a sudden, the fonts were being garbled by xelatex whenever I compiled a document. Backtracking to what I'd done, it turns out that xelatex will get confused by multiple occurrences of the same font in a fc-cache path (for want of a better term). Earlier on this afternoon, I'd recently followed a guide in the wiki (or thereabouts) to make some TeX fonts available to fc-cache. However, xelatex looks in the system font path when it loads them, and appears to discover two or more versions of the same font, and doesn't know which to substitute. Hence the output text gets a whole lot of characters messed up.
The solution is simple: remove the LaTeX fonts from the system search path. In my case, I'd symlinked `/etc/fonts/conf.avail/09-texlive-fonts.conf` to `/etc/fonts/conf.d/09-texlive-fonts.conf` (as you do to enable fontconfig rules), and run fc-cache to update them. Removing this link and updating the cache fixes the issue, after recompiling the affected documents.
Does anyone think I should edit the wiki to point this out for future reference? It had me confused for a bit (right when I need to compose a job application due Monday), and Google didn't say anything. It might be useful for other tinkerers.
Douglas Adams wrote:A learning experience is something that tells you, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
    Appropriate? Perhaps.

I've had similar problems with XeLaTeX in the past. I hope they figure out a way to fix it.
I think perhaps the wiki should be edited to give a warning that this might happen, and maybe water down the suggestion for making TeX fonts available and/or suggest alternatives.
Personally, I quickly regretted the decision to make all the TeX fonts available to fontconfig, merely because the huge number of them (at least for a full TeXlive install) made using any font selection dialogue overwhelming. I've switched to fc-caching them manually if and when I need them.

  • FontBook font corruptions [?] - but not in all apps.

I'm scratching my head on this one!
I'm using a new G5 Quad with all the usual design applications... and Office 2004. The fonts work fine in InDesign/Illustrator/Acrobat/Photoshop/FCP, etc... except Office 2004. I use Font Book exclusively now - Suitcase X1 being the mess it is.
Everytime I launch either Word/Powerpoint/Excel I get an error message during the splash screen start up, namely: "... this font is corrupt and should be replaced...". I'm a designer and art editor and have a lot of fonts... simply hitting 'OK' at the message a countless number of times is not a viable option. So....
.... I tried to repair it by doing the following:
Firstly, I logged on as a 'new user' and at first attempt, Word opened fine.
This is what I did next:
    1. Assuming a font problem - while in 'new user', I copied all the fonts in both library folders onto an external FireWire HD.
    2. I then logged back into my (administrator) account to copy them to my library/fonts folders.
    3. Verified ALL fonts using FontBook. Everyone passed as OK.
    4. Deleted the font cache in Office preferences.
    5. Ran permissions and logged back into the 'new user' account.
    6. Did nothing but start up Word. This time I got the exact same error
message as on my administrator account ["... this font is corrupt..."].
Now, I'm stumped. I also tried Powerpoint and Excel... both came up with the same error message.
Does anyone have a solution for this frustrating problem, or has experienced similar and know of a work around? This problem is driving me nuts...!

  • Weird font bug in CS4 with 321impact

    Hi,
Being using the font 321Impact for a lot of work in Photoshop etc. works fine. Just come to use the font in InDesign (cs4) but

fi and fl - this is driving me nuts! The font works perfectly well in everything else and the characters don't disppear. I thought it
