Lots of fonts to manage

I've collected a large number of fonts over the years. I estimate over 30,000 of them. They are in serious need of something better than Finder to deal with.
Some of them are damaged (Finder/System crashes when I try to view them).
Many are duplicates.
Some have their names missing (internally).
You get the idea.
I'm looking for an application to help with both fixing them and cataloging them. What do you suggest?
Gary

I guess I'm confused as to how the name of the font could be missing internally, unless it was modified (and that's not easy when you don't know what you're looking for in those files). But it is possible that some of your fonts are damaged or corrupted.
Back in the OS 9 days, there was a program called FontAgent Pro that had the ability to "find, repair and organize all the fonts on your drive." It's obviously not sold anymore, but I do see a copy available on eBay for FontAgent 8 Network Edition of it (although you don't have to use it on a network):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120843151553?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m15 55.l2649
There was also Extensis Suitcase 8, which was for activating and manging your fonts in programs; it didn't have any feature to repair fonts. I've heard good things about FontAgent Pro for it's repair abilities, and varying things about it's actual font management abilities. Suitcase was the best-selling font manager back then, so maybe you'd want to get both and use FontAgent to try to repair your fonts, and Suitcase to manage them. I see a listing for Suitcase 8 on eBay, from the same seller as FontAgent:

  • Font Book: Managing Fonts, Duplicates, Warnings etc... Need Help!

    How this all started...
I have a lot of fonts. I use them for design purposes, and recently added a bunch of new ones.
As a result, I had a problem with an Adobe program and the font displayed in the workspace.
I figured out which one caused it and deleted it. (I've never used it before, and it wasn't a common font, so I didn't really care).
    Problem with that solved.
So I figured that I ought to go through Font Book and check everything else and started Validation (under User).
I had several Errors, Duplicates and Warnings.
I (maybe naively) allowed Font Book to "Resolve Duplicates".
QUESTION 1 (a) (b):  Could letting Font Book resolve duplicates create any problems? and how does it decide what to trash?
I also let Font Book move all the Error fonts to my empty Trash Folder.
    - I then moved all those to an empty folder on my desktop.
I then moved all the Warning Fonts to another empty folder on my desktop.
So now, in User fonts, there are currently no problem messages.
This is where it gets a little trickier...
In "All Fonts" or "Computer" there are no caution symbols adjacent to any fonts, but if I run Validation, I get a lot of duplicate fonts.
    For example... Arial exists in:
    Library/fonts
    User/Library/fonts
    Library/Fonts/Microsoft
QUESTION 2: Do I need to address these? and if so, will that have an effect on any programs that use those fonts?
    * I did some research on this, and found an article at Mac World, discussing this, but I don't feel any better/wiser after reading it or the comments...
"Problem" since resolving duplicates and/or moving warning and error fonts (from User):
Since I resolved duplicates, and moved the error and warning fonts, I've noticed some "minor" changes in appearance with websites.
Such as in Hotmail, and a website that I'm a member; the font displayed is now just slightly different.
Albeit, the difference is very subtle, (but as a designer, I noticed this right away) and my concern is how this may affect any design work I do, if somehow the change I'm seeing is more of an error.
    * I have to make an assumption that its a font used in scripts (like Arial, Helvetica, etc, etc) that use my fonts for display.
QUESTION 3: So the big question is, how the heck do I address that now???
    About the Warning Fonts:
For the most part, the fonts that came up as "minor warnings", showed the message 'kern' table structure and contents.
    - I know that "kern" is suppose to be the spacing between characters.
QUESTION 4: So, why does Font Book care and warn about the "table structure and contents" of font spacing between characters, for any font???
QUESTION 4b: If that's NOT what that means, then I'd appreciate a plain English definition (perferably a source from Apple directly).
    Caches:
I'm seeing changes on the fly with fonts (and the display on websites), if I try and move fonts that had warnings like Arial styles or Helvetica styles back to my User Directory, so I'm guessing that Font Caching isn't affected by this.
If anyone is going to suggest that I deal with the font cache (since I've read several questions on this topic already), I'd appreciate some explanation about WHY I would need to address font caches and HOW they might be affected in respect to your suggestion and the problems I'm having.
    Additional Information:
    I use a MacBook, Mac OS X 10.6
~ If there's some other information that you may need from me, then please ask away... I need to figure this out, and Font Book is driving me crazy!!!

Yes hindsight is 20/20. I realize now that I should not have allowed FB to do what it asked. (But that's a moot point now).
Having a large number of fonts is something I've always had for design purposes. I never had issues with fonts on a PC, and didn't expect these sorts of problems on a Mac. And how is someone suppose to know NOT to trust a pre-installed program that's suppose to MANAGE your fonts???
I don't touch the system fonts. I am well aware that they can't be deleted, nor do I add any fonts to that directory.
I agree... I need to narrow down the issue. That was the whole point of posting this!
I do keep backups of my system and files. I have considered just replacing the font folders with what I had before, but it just brings me back to where I had all the warnings, errors and duplicates... And I'm not entirely sure if and how that could affect the font caches, and if I would need to then address those. I've been researching this quite a bit, but so far, all I've found is complaints or questions from people with similar problems. For whatever reason, very few people seem to want to offer help with this kind of problem (but I thank you for at least trying)...
With Dreamweaver, its not quite that simple. If it was, then I wouldn't need the help. Even if we disregard the issue I have with Dreamweaver, the problem also exists on some websites, webmail, etc. Websites (and Dreamweaver) use standard font families and display their fonts from YOUR installed fonts. The font problems I'm have online are not missing fonts, they are just not the same font in size or appearance that they were before (and no, my webmail, and these websites didn't change. I had someone give me some screenshots to confirm). But I can't figure out exactly where the problem is, because it appears that I DO have the standard fonts. It could be that FB removed a version that was better than what was left behind, or it could be something else.... I have no idea anymore. I'm just getting more frustrated.

  • Office 2008 Fonts - Best Management Techniques

Hi, we manage our fonts extensively (using Suitcase Fusion), and only the bare minimum system fonts are left handled by the system. We use a lot of our own fonts to override system fonts, etc. We keep it real clean.
So we just got the new MS Office 2008 suite. It comes with about 130 fonts. A lot are fonts we already have. Some are .ttf versions of PostScript fonts we have. Some are upgraded versions of fonts shipped with previous versions of Office.
    - Anyone have a good handle and management strategy for all of these fonts?
    - How about preference to keeping our PostScript versions vs. the TT fonts that are included? I've heard the fonts included are Unicode. Any value?
We just do NOT want to have multiple versions of the same fonts. In the past our PostScript versions of fonts were usually more complete, having a greater range of weights, etc. But I don't know if the Office apps need the Unicode functionality of these new TT fonts.
We would prefer to use OpenType fonts exclusively going forward, but can't purchase yet a 3rd version of all these crazy fonts.
    Any ideas???

Office 2007/2008 (and Vista) come with some brand-new typefaces, all of which start with "C." The full set is Calibri, Candara, Constantia, Corbel, Cambria and Consolas. These are OpenType fonts with TrueType outlines (at least they are on Windows - I'm assuming MS shipped the same fonts for Mac OS.) Some of these are default fonts for Office and/or Vista.
I can't guarantee Office does not rely on any other fonts, but I don't think so.
For cases where the MS-supplied fonts conflict with ones you already have, I'd keep the ones you have for compatibility reasons, unless the MS-supplied ones have some obvious advantage (such as a bigger family).
TrueType and OpenType fonts use a Unicode encoding. This is a clearer and more reliable way for apps and OSes to associate characters with glyphs, but is not absolutely necessary. In particular, using a Unicode encoding does not mean the font has more glyphs (or encoded characters). TrueType and OpenType fonts *can* have more language coverage, but that doesn't mean that any given font necessarily does. OpenType fonts (with either kind of outlines) can also have added typographic features using alternate glyphs, but again they don't *necessarily* have them.
Note that the "C" fonts mentioned earlier have both added language coverage and some nice typographic features (such as oldstyle figures and true small caps).

    T

  • Installing a lot of fonts

Hopefully not to Off Topic - when installing a lot of fonts (2000+), would you [Install] or [Install a shortcut/copy]? Does either slow the system down more than the other? PC/Win7/CS6

None. CS3 will work with your basic system fonts. Those fonts are extras.
That said, they are great fonts, worth several hundred dollars. Use them instead of web freebies, which can cause problem due to poor construction. The only ones I don't load in are the Asian fonts.

  • Firefox does not start when I click, but consume a lot of resourcein task manager

    Hello,
Since a few days, when I click Firefox, it does not start anymore (browser Windows does not appear anymore).
Also, I noticed that after I click, my computer makes a lot of noise et becomes slow & gets almost blocked: I can see that in the task manager/processes, firefox is there and consume a lot of memory ressources.
    Can you help ?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Thanks for you reply. What you propose me is to create a new profile and transfer the files from the old profiles to the new.
I am not interested by this option as I want to keep my current profile as I am using programs working on this profile and also have Firefox working on this profile.
But I have a new information which might help. I did not see it during my last tentative but after a few minutes after Mozilla launch, there was like a bug report which were generated.

  • My Firefox continues to stall a lot and Window Task Manager shows that Firefox is using a lot of memory (600,000k +) What can I do to make this stop stalling?

I play Farmville or on Pogo and my computer keeps giving me the hour glass and when I look on my Windows Task Manager it shows that I am using over 600,000 k of memory. When it does that I can't do anything unless I just use the power button to shut the computer down or use the task manager to "End Process". I do not like to do either of these so I usually just sit and wait for it to fix itself then later it does it all over again.
Also when I was doing defrag on the file type tab it showed two Mozilla Firefox so I am wondering if this is the issue but I only see one in the control panel.

  • Lots of fonts messed up. /etc/fonts/ dissapeared :s

I started up arch today and went to open something in mousepad, i noticed that monospace was messed up so i ran "fc-cache -fv" as root and normal user again. Then rebooted now there are more fonts that have messed up like sans etc.
Anyone know how to fix this? Here's the output of fc-cache.

  • Font Book Management

Can someone tell me if I disable a font or fonts in Font Book, do they stay disabled until I enable them or do they become enabled when I log out and log back into the account? I want to disable a good number of fonts that I do not use that came with the OS. Are there some fonts that are required?

    quattro --
The font list has been updated for 10.6.
+OS X, 10.6 has changed font formats, though the main list of fonts is little different. Apple has done away with their proprietary .
format and has replaced them with standard TrueType OpenType fonts, which have a .ttf or .ttc extension. There are a handful of .dfonts left in the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, but for the most part, they're obsolete (see section 8 for additional fonts Snow Leopard installs). As in 10.5, the Multiple Master fonts are visible. The minimum font list for OS X, 10.6 is as follows:+
    AppleGothic.ttf
    Geneva.dfont
    HelveLTMM
    +Helvetica LT MM+
    Helvetica.dfont
    HelveticaNeue.ttc
    Keyboard.ttf
    LastResort.ttf
    LucidaGrande.ttc
+Menlo.ttc (the new default font for Terminal)+
    Monaco.dfont
    +Times LT MM+
    TimesLTMM
    Times.dfont
    Symbol.dfont

  • Controlling Fonts and Managing Table Layouts

    Hello iWeb community,
I'm helping a friend of mine who owns a neighborhood gym by creating his website. It a very occasional hobby, so I'm not up on all the tricks. iWeb does make it so easy to do most of what I need, but I'm having some issues. Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Here's the URL: http://web.mac.com/iamrobin/informa/Main.html
Please ignore the photos... they are mostly just snap shots I've taken (and I'm not much of a photographer!).
    1) on "The Team" page, when I look at the site on a PC, the names of the folks and the @ In Forma lines are in the proper font, but the rest of the bios are not. It looks as if they're in Helvetica, but the letters are mashing together. I've tried copying and pasting text styles and that doesn't seem to fix the problem.
    2) On the Memberships page, I have nested tables showing the membership fees. I saved the site to a folder then in BBEdit I created the tables. In BBEdit the fonts are correct and but I can't get the Yoga column to align at the top of the table. As you can see tho, that my HTML widget isn't acting the same way when I place it back into iWeb. What have I done wrong here? I really don't want to make the fees a PDF as it will take too long to load the page.
And if you have any general feedback, I'd love to hear that too.
    Thanks for your help!
    ~Robin

    Hi Robin.
Did you have any luck with the fonts. As I am having the same problem where the fonts change and no longer fit in the text box properly(so missing some tex at the bottom of page) and some overlapping. I also found that the text was different from page to page even though the font was the same throughout I-web.
So I have spent ages just tweaking and phoning up friends with PC's to ask if it looks OK...not figured it out yet.

  • Lots of channels to manage

    Hello Everyone,
I have written a VI that will allow me to collect data from 200 different channels across 25 different wireless sensor nodes.
I started a second vi that will access the files that I am writing the data to in order to generate graphs.
What I want this VI to do?
    - First, i would like to select the channels that i would like to view on my graph.
    - Next, i want to access the files and build a new array with the parameters that i have selected.
(my abilities are good to this point)
    - When it comes to putting these parameters to an XY Graph, I'm lost.  I'm not sure how to do it because the number of channels selected will vary each time i want to run a different graph.  I have attached the typical way that i generate a XY Graph just showing four channels and i'm not sure how to build a different sized array for the graph each time i select an additional parameter.

  • Safari showing Boxed A's

Since updating Snow Leopard to Lion, Safari has been displaying strings of boxed A's where readable text should be. I have not altered the fonts since the upgrade. Firefox behaves normally. Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks

I had this exact annoying issue for a long time with font display in Safari (Firefox was fine)... and I think I've finally fixed it.
I also use Suitcase Fusion 3 for my Adobe Creative Suite apps and initially I found that if I reboot in Safe Mode to clear the font cache OR use Suitcase to clear the font case it would provide a very temporary "cure".
I use a lot of fonts mostly managed by Suitcase Fusion 3 and on a hunch I went through the fonts I constantly use and cleared and deleted all the Postscript fonts. Where needed I substituted with OpenType or TrueType fonts.
PostScript is an older font format and I thought it might be an issue.
Happily I can report that while before many web pages, including my banking pages, displayed type as "Keyboard A's", now I have not had a single font issue with any Safari page.
In my case, at least, I believe that not using any PostScript type fonts solved the problem. Use OpenType or TrueType.

  • Best font management solution for CS6/InDesign?

I recently upgraded to CS6. (OS 10.6.8). I'm finding that InDesign is extremely slow and wondering if it might have to do with font management. I have a LOT of fonts on my machine. I was using Suitcase previously. Do I need to continue with that? I'd appreciate any advice about best practices for organizing fonts and/or suggestions for font management software.

Must say its Font Explorer Pro (FEP) for me! (MacPro OSX 10.6.8 Indesign Creative Suite 4, Indesign 5.5)
When I first started this job they had suitcase and I found that program really limiting. But I also had never used it before and knew very little about it.
FEP has many things that I like about it.
    1. Although most people lean away from font auto activation the one that comes with FEP has been working real smooth, a few second delay when opening files while it starts what font is required.
    2. Font Preview is amazing, select the fonts you want to compare with a typeface you have and you have transparent view and slide show.
    3. Font Groups: Where you can put all fonts for particular jobs into smart sets.
    4. Search files and discover which fonts where used inside that file and save that as a font set
    5. There is also a server version of the program.
    6. Application Sets: Really handy for auto activating fonts used only in certain programs.
    7. Good Conflict control.
The list could possibly go on and on, in other words, love FEP and highly recommend it.

  • How do YOU manage fonts in OSX?

I have not yet found the magic solution that lets me reliably manage large font libraries in OSX.
If anyone has got a solution, or is even merely coping, please pass on some tips.
    Thanks,
    P.

I have tried Font Book more than once. It is extremely slow, last shot a few days ago it sat hours without showing any signs of progress until I force quit it. This totally screwed my fonts, particularly in Safari.
This is consistent behavior for Font Book when you're trying to handle a lot of fonts. It just isn't very good at that task. Every single font you open with Font Book gets copied to the Fonts folder you chose in its preferences. Since both are considered "always on" folders by the underlying Unix system, Font Book also keeps a database of all installed fonts to determine which should be enabled and which are not. If this database gets damaged, fonts that Font Book says are enabled still don't show up in lists, causes long hangs at startup and other problems.
I did an archive and reinstall of OSX which introduced further problems, now some fonts are missing that were there before and others that aren't part of v10.5.6 seem to be installed.
You can reinstall just the fonts that came with OS X without having to resort to an Archive and Install. See my article which baltwo first linked to above. Any other fonts you've added should have remained where they were. They probably are still there, but a damaged Font Book database is likely keeping them from appearing. You can reset Font Book. Follow the steps in Undoing Font Book. Note that you will lose any font collections you have created. Doing this will also clear the font cache files for your user account. Since Font Book's database is reset, all fonts will in your Fonts folders will be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
I have also tried Suitcase (not for a while) it was also slow and somewhat unpredictable.
Versions X and X1 weren't the best, but Fusion is very stable.
Linotype Font Xchange looks nice but I can't figure out how it is interacting with fonts in Font Book and there seems to be issues with open fonts not showing up in applications.
I have to assume you mean FontExplorer X, since there is no such title as Font Xchange. Big mistake though that a lot of people make. Font Book is just another font manager. It has no special ties to the OS. If you do decide to use a different manager, delete the Font Book application from your hard drive. It's always best to have one, and ONLY one font manager on your system at a time.
Truth to tell I have never overcome the problems of font management in OSX. Is there no way of at minimum just coping with the problems of OSX fonts and at best getting back to the relatively smooth management of Mac Classic?
I find font management just as easy in OS X as OS 9 was. Well, once I learned why there were so many different folders all called Fonts, and why they are separated the way they are. Once you get that, it's a piece of cake.
I believe that is what we are supposed to have, which is the fonts linked (via a Font manager), but not open, and either opened as we need them manually or automatically as the application calls for them.
Agreed. Both Suitcase Fusion 2 and FontExplorer X work that way (actually, you need to tell FEX to use that method). While FEX is free, I still much prefer Suitcase. The biggest reason being that it ensures the same version of a font will be used the next time you open a document in an application that supports auto activation. That I know of, FEX can't do that. It has an auto activate feature, but if you use a different version of Bookman, it can't tell the difference. It sees Bookman and assumes all is okay.
Also there is no way of knowing in some apps whether you have just opened a TrueType .otf or PostScript .otf.
Almost all professional apps tell you the difference. TrueType fonts will be shown with a blue double T icon. OpenType with its green and black letter O. Type 1 PostScript with a red letter A. The only confusion comes from OpenType. Those can be created in TrueType or PostScript versions. The PostScript ones have .otf as their extension. TrueType versions have the same .ttf extensions as the original TrueType fonts of years ago. While you can of course see the difference between them by file name, programs don't differentiate them. They both get the same green/black letter O icon in font lists. There's no way to tell if it's a TrueType or PostScript OpenType font from there.
I can not do what I did in Classic which is have all the font variations in one suitcase and open and close them in one click.
Both Suitcase Fusion 2 and FontExplorer X will open complete sets in one click.
You can download FEX and play around with it as much as you want, being free. If you want it to open fonts in place, just make sure when you first launch it to choose the option "Don't manage fonts" (or something like that). It's kind of a strange way to state the option, but that's the one you want. Suitcase Fusion 2 can be downloaded and used as a fully functional demo for 30 days. It's only method is to open fonts in place. That or open in place and add the fonts to its Vault (the default). I personally see no use for the Vault and use only the open fonts in place option.

  • [SOLVED] dwm manager taskbar font howto

I'm trying to make my default dwm taskbar font bigger. After I installed dwm the default taskbar font looks small for me. How can I make it bigger?
I tried editing config.h file and edited default font to:
    static const char font[]            = "*-*-fixed-medium-r-normal--*-110-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1";
just the way it was set in my other distro.
But still no result, same small font.
Does anybody have a good font in mind, that will look good, like the one from terminus pack. I don't know the names of good fonts and googling doesn't give any good alternatives.
Maybe somebody has already have something in mind?
    1. why does my dwm font do not change, even when I edit config.h, compile and install (makepkg -efi)?
    2. could you provide any good font alternatives?
ps. also this default dwm font does not understand cyrillic or any other language, so when I try "Mod+p" in ru layout it screws my typing.

    no, that doesn't work.
    ls Public/dwmls Public/dwm_sync/dwm/_sync/dwm/
    config.h                       dwm-5.8.2.tar.gz  dwm.install  PKGBUILD
    dwm-5.8.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz  dwm.desktop       pkg          src
    1. What I did is, edited config.h line to:
    static const char font[]            = "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-17-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-*";
    2.makepkg -efi
    3.reboot
    Result: nothing changed in taskbar
ps. didn't find any of your fonts, I've installed lots of fonts via pacman.
    my config.h cat:
