Low BB Speed/ Rural Area

Hi i live in a rural area, aprox 4.7 miles from my local village exchange (according to samknows.com).
We get a speed of 1.25 megs on adslmax according to bt wholesale which is pretty poor in this day and age.
My friend lives only half a mile closer to the exchange yet he is able to get 6megs speed which is a bit more respectable.
Anyway i recently noticed according to bt wholesale are local transfer is being upgraded next month to BT's 21CN product which i have been told is adsl2.
I was wondering if that will increase are speeds any or are we forever stuck with this painfully slow internet?
Im not here to complain or anything, i understand we live in a rural area, but i thought in this day and age there might be a possibility of slightly faster internet.
My bt exchange is :

Thanks for any info you can give me

Hi gkane05,
You have a very stable and good 1.53mbps sync rate for your 62.3dB (approx. 4.5Km+ long line).
As to the BTw 21cn network which allows ADSL2/2+ modulation (upto 12/20mbps), the ADSL2/2+ modulations are more aggressive to any noise on your line. It may also increase your line attenuation by 2/4dB, therefore on longer lines it can make the connection unstable if your line isn't able to cope with these higher frequencies.
Also when your exchange has been 21cn upgraded, the lines have to be migrated to the new 21cn hardware in the exchange in batches so it can take days/weeks/months for all the lines to be migrated over to the 21cn network. Also you may be kept on ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) modulation but on the 21cn network if your line isn't able to cope with ADSL2/2+.
In my experience, when we were moved to the 21cn network we were kept on ADSLMax (due to having a very long line), however the migration to the 21cn network did upset the line to start off with and then with the help of this forum, the Mods and Openreach we got it back to our usual 0.8mbps to 1.5mbps sync rate.
Your exchange is FTTC fibre enabled. Have you checked whether you're able to get FTTC fibre broadband such as BT Infinity.
If FTTC fibre broadband is available to you however your estimation for WBC FTTC is below 15mbps (due to your line being further than 1.5Km from your FTTC cabinet) then you maybe able to get BT Faster Unlimited Broadband which is an FTTC fibre broadband product for those with less than 15mbps WBC FTTC .
You can check by going to http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl
Cheers

I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed Internet?

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers

  • Low Broadband speed = line fault?

    Hi,
We have had a very slow download speed since the high winds started last week (live in a rural area about 1 mile from exchange).
I have run through the BT Broadband speed wizard & not improved the speed.
    ADSL Speedtest results are:
    Download speed achieved - 194Kbps
                               Acceptable = 50-250Kbps
                               DSL 3424Kbps (downstream)
                                          448Kbps (upstream)
                               IP Profile = 250Kbps
Now, I don't know what it was before - but this appears to me to be pretty slow!
If I understand the notes correctly? for 3424Kbps we should be getting 600 to 7150Kbps throughput speed?
All I know, is that pages are taking an age to load...
Any thoughts on what to do next please?

    Hi again,
As promised, we have left on 24/7 & not re-set etc. Although it seems to have re-set itself a few times.
I am amazed at the low 480 Kbps speed! It is usually around 5400 Kbps...

  • Verizon aircard a solution for desktops in rural area?

OK, to begin with, I am nearly totally in the dark as far as aircards and Internet service via Verizon is concerned. Having said that, here's my situation: We have moved to a rural area here in Kentucky in which the only Internet service available is dialup. There is no cable service in the area, and Windstream is the local landline phone provider.  Their DSL is a couple of miles from us, but they have NO plans to extend it to our area so it does us no good.  In the past I lived in a city where I had Time Warner cable Internet.  I'm obviously aware of HughesNet, but after researching it, I've gathered that it basically amounts to paying 80-120 a month after the trial period, but still having limitations on usage.  (Compared to 30 bucks a month for unlimited cable Internet back in town, those were the days!)  Anyway, I'd like some opinions from some of you who are knowledgeable.  Is there an option with Verizon that would work for me, and would be better than HughesNet?  I do know that 4G is not in this part of Kentucky yet.  However, my cell service is with Verizon and I always get full bars of service at home, so I wouldn't think signal strength would be an issue.  If it would be possible to use an aircard here, then my next question would be this:  We have two desktops.  Is there a way to network using a USB aircard, or would we be looking at having to unplug it and take it to the other PC every time?  Thanks in advance!

kentucky77: I was in your same shoes about 6 months ago--no DSL/cable, not even a phone line; previously with a local WISP (long-range WiFi) that was massively oversubscribed.  I was considering satellite. When Verizon 4G came to town, I decided to try it, and I'm glad I did. 3G/4G has its quirks, but it sounds like your best option. It certainly was mine.
As the previous poster suggested, the first thing you need to do is check the coverage maps. If you have 3G coverage, then the next step is to stop by a local Verizon store and check again (they claim to have more detailed coverage maps).  Based on your phone coverage, it sounds like you should be OK.
Next, you'll need to decide which modem or hotspot to get. I don't know if 3G-only devices are still available, and none of the 4G devices are perfect, so I don't really know which one to recommend. I purchased the Pantech UML290, and I'm generally pleased with it now that I have it plugged into a 4G router and now that I'm using an external antenna. (For me, connecting the modem directly into a computer's USB port was a nightmare in random disconnections and random Windows and Verizon Access Manager software errors.) Also, I'd suggest getting a device with an external antenna port, just in case you need a better signal.
If you can get a signal at home with the modem, you should check your signal strength--or at least the download and upload speeds--to make sure you have a decent connection. If not, there are numerous 3G antennas and boosters available. (For example, http://3gstore.com/category/443_412_antennas.html.) Note that poor 3G speeds may be due to an overloaded tower, so check your signal strength if you can; many here can advise on how to do this in VZ Access Manager.
If the signal strength and speeds are good, there are several ways to share the connection:
    (1) The easiest option is to purchase a 3G/4G router. With such a router, you plug the modem into the router, and then your computers connect to the router via either WiFi or ethernet. A Google search should yield many results. I have the Nexaira BC2 router.  Make sure whatever you get supports your model modem.
    (2) If you have a machine that has Windows 7, you can download and use the freeware program Connectify. This program will turn a computer with a WiFi card into a hotspot (WiFi router). So, with this option, one computer would have the Verizon modem plugged into it, and then all other computers would connect via WiFi to this "hotspot" computer. I used this option at an RV park once; it worked quite well, but required that the "hotspot" computer always be on.
    (3) Another option is to use Windows' Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) software or a Mac box with equivalent sharing software. I initially did this with an XP computer. I plugged the Verizon modem into the computer, plugged the computer into a WiFi router, and then all other computers connected to the router. I didn't like this option because it was difficult to set up, and sometimes ICS failed to assign an IP address to the WiFi router; it was a pain.
Options (2) and (3) both require that you run Verizon Access Manager, which I dislike. As I said, using VZAM was a nightmare in random disconnections and random software errors. Some have avoided this by using a dialup script to connect to the Verizon network.
My biggest hurdle throughout this whole process was getting a decent signal, which required mounting an antenna in my attic.
Good luck, and let us know what you decide.
    Cheers,

  • Home Hub 3 with low sync speed

Excuse a newbie who's somewhat jealous of people complaining how they only get 8Mbps!
A combination of factors means that for months I have been getting a sync of 2624-3040, which equates to a profile of 2000-2500 and resultant download speeds of 1650-2250 using my old Voyager 2091. Then about a year ago, after fitting an I-plate etc. etc. I was achieving fairly consistent downloads at 2200 - so I asked for BT Vision. I can't comment on it, because almost immediately my download speed dropped and my profile was set back to 2000 so Vision was a waste of space. This didn't correct over time, so at the end of September I called up and an engineer came to test my line, swapped me to a new pair due to earthing issues and said I might want to replace my trusty old voyager. All this disruption still had negligible effect, so around Xmas I obtained a Home Hub 3.
Bad to worse - in the last week I have had to reboot the HH3 at least 5 times (so I'll never get to the end of my BRAS training period) and whereas before I could watch Iplayer etc. 95% of the time, now it seems incapable of streaming for more than half an hour, before the speed drops below an acceptable limit. I'm close to junking the HH3 and going back to the Voyager.
Is this normal? I've read about the HH3 dropping speeds on contention - am I seeing the issue because this makes my speed unusable? (A drop of 1Mb on an 8Mb speed might be annoying, but for me it's fatal!) or do I have a rogue hub .... in which case, what do I do?

Results fresh in as you'll see - internet froze again 20 minutes ago and forced ANOTHER reboot.
With regards to your standard questions - as you'll see from my earlier post, I had a BT engineer in with me for over 4 hours in September, so all the "normal" tests were done, internal wiring checked, quiet line test was done from the master socket, he even swapped me to a new pair with better earth. There are 3 extension and the NTE5, all filtered. .... oh and neighbours with another provider achieve 2K+ constantly.
I am not now connected to the NTE5, but the engineer cut the bell wire and it has an I-Plate anyway (belt & braces!). During tests with him and for 3 weeks after (without a reboot) the router was connected directly to the master socket and it made no difference, except weakening the wireless signal to my office. So I am again connected to my office extension socket, as before, and the move had no discernable effect on sync since October.
So I'm not really expecting much on sync,  live in a rural area, 2.5 clicks from the exchange (ADSL/POTS) but have a line length of over 4Km using the normal calcuation, probably with lovely aluminium along the way.
I'm just gobsmacked that the new Hub appears to be unfit for purpose, drops the download speed at the drop of a hat and freezes up on a regular basis .... so this is my final fling before jacking it and probably joining my neighbours with a provider who CAN offer an improvement.

The only thing you can do is pause the download. There is no way to divide it into pieces.

  • What is the best way to increase signal strength to my 5510L Hotspot in a rural area with bad coverage?  Inexpensive methods?

Living in a rural area with "spotty coverage".  No cable here.   Didn't want to go the DSL route because we will probably only be here 6 months.  Verizon rep said you'll have no problems with the Hotspot when he sold us on it.   Said we should get 4G.   Well, it turns out we only get 3G AT BEST, usually 1X whatever that means.   12-36% signal.  1-2 bars.  Very slow internet speed.  Frustrating.
I need a solution to increase my signal strength.  Do the extenders/boosters work?   Is there an inexpensive way?   Maybe I should have gone with the DSL with all the fees.
    Help please.

    Check into amplifiers and antennas:
    http://3gstore.com/page/13_will_an_antenna_help_me.html
Perform what is called a Site Survey to collect statistics about your wireless environment.  Compare those stats against the Interpret the Results tab of that site to see if anything can be done or not.
Most of this equipment comes with a return policy.  There shouldn't be too much harm in running a site survey, deciding what product to invest into, test it out and return if it doesn't work as expected.
Be forewarned, you cannot amplify a signal that is not already there.  If you are out in the boonies with no 4G LTE coverage then an amplifier may not have anything to work with.  Most booster kits are more effective with 3G signals anyways.

  • I have been a loyal customer for years and have a hot spot because internet options are very limited in our rural area.  I have stayed with 10G since the beginning.  Most months I don't use the 10G.  Verizon has no problem with me paying for Data I don't

I have been a loyal customer for years and have a hot spot because internet options are very limited in our rural area.  I have stayed with 10G since the beginning.  Most months I don't use the 10G.  Verizon has no problem with me paying for Data I don't use.  This month my daughter comes home from College and she accidentally uses 24G.....14 over get blind sided with $140.00 in overages.  I called Verizon today......stopped in to the store today......My neighbor told me they waved charges for her one time.  Lots of charges.....But I'm am getting no help.  Not even an offer of a payment plan to help me out.  I went back just 6 months and I have over paid for 19G.....Seems like they would like to help out their loyal customers!!!!     Does anybody have any suggestions on how to deal with them?   We are not wealthy....or I would just pay this and walk away......

There is a big misconception in what customers believe a cell carrier is obligated to do.
You pay a set price to use up to that amount of xx data. It makes no difference if you use it to the paid limit or way under. Its like peace of mind when you don't have to worry about a data counter.
Your daughter used the data, your plan is quite clear of what overage charges are. Why should or would Verizon wireless just forgive the charges because you are a customer? Your daughter used the data, get the money from her. That is the responsible thing to do.
There is no "I have been a loyal customer so please remove the $120, or $250, or $2,000.00 since I did not mean to use it"
Your electric company, or gas company or any other company does not remove valid charges. Why should Verizon wireless?
Just pay the invoice and don't think you are being mistreated because Verizon is a business and not a charity.
    Good Luck

  • Can you print from an iPad 2 using 3G in a home with no computer or wifi by using an iPhone 5 hot spot connection if the printer has been set up in another place with live wifi? I know this question is loaded but my dad lives in a rural area

Can you print from an iPad 2 using 3G in a home with no other computer or wifi by using an iPhone 5 hot spot connection if the printer has been set up in another place with live wifi? I know this question is loaded but my dad lives in a rural area and is wanting a printer to use occasionally. He doesn't want to deal with a computer and I keep his iPad updated for him at my home.  Please shed some light on this for us PLEASE. Thanks

In that case, it should be possible. I haven't tried this directly, but I believe it should work.
You'll need to get an actual AirPrint compatible Printer.
Check here for a list of Printers you can choose from.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
Once you have the compatible printer, using the Hotspot feature from the iPhone he'll have to create the Wifi bubble form the iPhone, and connect the Printer to that Wifi network.
Then connect the iPad to that same Wifi network provided by the iPhone. When all that is done, the printer should appear in any of the Apps that can Print under the Action Arrow button.
For instance in email, pressing the action arrow should show a Print option. In there the printer should appear.
Alternatively you can simply buy a wireless router and setup the network through there even if there is no internet attached.  Connect the wireless printer to the router network, and connect the iPad or iPhone to that same wifi network to print.

  • Using Creative Cloud on a desktop in a rural area with no Internet access

I have a Creative Cloud subscription for my home desktop. I will soon be participating in a photography workshop in a rural area with NO INTERNET ACCESS. I don't own a laptop and will be hauling my desktop to the place we're staying. I know the software is installed on the machine and I should be fine with using it without online access, correct? Am I also correct in thinking it won't be "seen" as being used on a second computer because while I use it on this trip I won't have Internet access and therefore no IP address?

    Hi there
The only thing that might cause you trouble is if your workshop is over a month long. While using applications downloaded from Creative Cloud, internet access is required once a month for a routine license check. Here's a snipet from the Creative Cloud FAQ:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html
Do I need ongoing Internet access to use my Creative Suite applications?
Because your Creative Suite applications are installed directly on your computer, you will not need an ongoing Internet connection to use them on a daily basis. However, you will need to be online when you install and license your software, and at least once every 30 days thereafter. The software will alert you when you need to connect to the Internet for a license status check.
A quick note: if the product is unable to verify your license at the 30 day mark, a 7-day grace period will begin. However, if you are not able to access internet within those 7 days, your applications will be blocked (Soucre: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4513667#4513667)
Regarding your second question - as long as you are using the same device you already have your applications installed on, you'll still only have one device registered to your account.
If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to post here again.
    Cheers!

  • I live in a rural area where I need to get Mountain Lion on CD/DVD.  Will Apple do that?

I live in a rural area where Mobile Broadband is my only internet access.  Since I have to pay $10/GB, downloads can get really expensive.  Mountain Lion is 4GB and that's not even the largest thing I've had to download.  Why can't Apple make a DVD available for those of us who are loyal customers and live in disadvantaged areas?  I have an iMac 24 and don't feel like lugging it to the next town so I can download my operating system in a coffee bar.  I realize that this gives apple much more control against piracy, but not all of their loyal customers (and we're talking about over 30-years in my case) are going to do that.

Get an USB thumbdrive large enough for the installer, go to town, download the installer, and copy it to the thumbdrive.

  • I don't know what to do in this situation.. I'm in the rural area

currently I own 2 iphones, iphone 4 and iphone 5 and both are destroyed unexpectedly.
our family is not a rich family but my father tried his best to give those phones to me as a present,
so those are really precious and I really took care of it.
my iphone 4 had a battery problem and the button problems as well, idk why this is always happening...
however, sad things happend for both phones. there was sudden lcd problems like there was a line in the bottom part of the phone and it got bigger.
and one day, it just shut down unexpectedly. I was just holding a phone, but the screen got blurred and it shut down. and I can't even open it until now.
I tried my best to repair the phone, that since I'm living in a rural area, I asked my friend who goes to urbane area for the repair, and they said
it can't be repair cause this phone is from hongkong. (it happened in the philippines and I was disappointed much ) and they just sent it back.
but I had to fix this phone. maybe for others it's just an Iphone, but because this is such a meaningful gift from my father from his hard working.
I asked my another friend who goes to korea to give this phone to apple center again cause I thought they are way better than the philippines center.
however, their answer was shocking. apple center in korea said that, some part of the phone is removed so they can't repair it anymore.
definitely, it had to be gotten from the philippines apple center. I was so terrified who could they do that to the customer..
and I wanted to send an email to apple about this situation, and sadly it has to be approved to send an email I guess form the phone, but how can I do that with the destroyed phone? so I really have no idea what to do with this situation. It has been so long already living without phone... I really need help from apple..

iPhones do not have international warranties. The only place in which you can get Apple service on your phones would be Hong Kong. Unless you have AppleCare, neither of these phones is under warranty. It is likely that the best Apple could offer you is an out-of-warranty replacement.

If you are intending using your hot spot to download movies for the Apple TV, you'll very quickly eat through your data allowance.

  • Poor service in a rural area

I live about 2 miles out side the largest town in Cornwall in a little place called Coombe. It shouldn't feel like the end of the world but as far as any sort of service from BT it does.
3 years ago I got in contact with BT to connect me up a phone line and get me onto broadband. No problem they said and if I was willing to sign up for the 18 months they would cut me a deal. I was only interested in the broadband but you can't have one without the other.
The order was messed up a couple of times as the house is divided into two flats and one of the flats allready had a line installed, but I didn't use that flat and I wanted my own line. Anyway after a couple of canceled orders and very very plain instructions and engineer was sent out to install my new line and broadband.
    Now the real trouble started.
    1) The new line was screwed into my neighbours house, which is a completely different colour to mine
    2) The broadband didn't work. The engineer pointed out that to save money BT had installed a wireless connection from the main exchange at Grampound rd and that would never be able to contain enough bandwidth for broadband.
I was peeved as I only wanted broadband in the first place and I was now locked into a 18 month contract for a landline. I tried everything I could and spent 6 months and 3 hubs trying to get the connection working. There is no sharing of information between openreach and BT sales. BT sales were insisting that I could get broadband as their PC say so.
To cut a long story short, I was offered some compensation to say sorry for the months and months of poor service. And no I still did not have any broadband, in fact after the antiquated equipment I was using with dial up gave up on me I was out of the internet for good.
Now skip 3 years forward, the tennants in flat A have spoke to BT and they say.. Of course we can get you a phone line and of course we can geive you broadband. They signed up to the contract (they even spent 1000 pounds on a nice fancy laptop). The engineer came out to visit and found that they dont have a line, as the new line I paid for 3 years ago was never installed, the guy just screwed on a dummy connection to look like a new line on my neighbours place, and then just re-used flat-A's line. Also we dont have any lines left in the green box for a new phone line and even if there was space, there just isn't the bandwidth to provide any broadband service in my village of coombe.
Now a sorry tale, and I feel sorry for my neighbours who now can't even get a telephone (and this is in the middle of a village not the middle of a moor).
The 72 hours emergency deadline has come and gone, with no reply from BT. The telephone conversations I have had with BT i keep getting fobbed off between customer services and faults department in bombay. All you do is talk to someone and then no action is taken, its like going to some BT therapy session.
The fact that you can right now go to the BT website plug in my phone number and they promise to get me on broadband is just not on. Its also illegal as its against the 1982 provision of goods act. There is no way that BT can say they didn't know that they can't provide this service.
Why should you be able to get away with selling my neighbours a service you can't provide ?, why should your engineers not do the work I paid them for 3 years ago with my new line, and where is the person who takes this sort of complaint and sorts it out.
I have writen to BT, Consumer Direct, the local Trading Standards, Ofcom, and even put a note into watchdog. So far I have received a generic, we think we can fix this from BT which I presume is just generated when you send a mail to them.
BT are currently investing millions and millions in my county upgrading the system to superfast broadband which is why it smarts so much to see that we are getting further and further behind. Kids are falling behind at school, my work is suffering and its a joke that in this day and age that my neighbour can not even get a phone line installed, let alone use 20 year old technology "dial up" to check some E mail. And before you ask ? we can't get a mobile signal as we are in a valley so mobile broadband doesn't work either.
Anyway thats my and my fellow villagers story..
