Lower thirds during live capture?

Hi guys,
Is it possible to drop a lower third clip during live capture?
Our church have a Mac Pro with AJA Kona 3 and Final Cut Studio 2. A panasonic video mixer with 2 SDI cameras. Basically we capture our church services and edit the lower thirds later. Is there a way that we can do this on the fly with our setup? Someone told us that Velocity has something like that and they just drop the lower third clip on the timeline. Can FCP do this too?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick response Shane.
What CG hardware do you recommend?
Also question about the AJA, I found this info
Internal HD/SD Live Hardware Keyer
Available for the first time on any QuickTime capture card is a powerful hardware keyer that can place graphic files with an alpha channel over video input, a selectable matte or the contents of the card’s framebuffer (KONA TV/Final Cut Pro). Even more than that, you can also key video that has an alpha channel over video input or a matte. For example, you can load a QuickTime clip with an alpha-channel — a flying logo perhaps — into KONA TV, then place it over live video coming into the card.
Is this the same as the CG Hardware you are talking about?

  • Help!  Frames Dropped During Live Capture

I am trying to switch over to Adobe Premiere from Final Cut Pro, but am having a serious problem with frames being dropped during capture.  When I do have frames dropped, it doesn't even save the video that it was capturing.  All that I get is a corrupt file that won't open.
I'm using a Mac Pro with 3.0Ghz Dual Core Xeon Processor, 9GB 667MHz RAM, and a BlackMagic Decklink SDI card, and am trying to capture 720p 59.94fps video over SDI.  I am capturing to an interal 1TB 7200RPM dedicated scratch disk that is not used for ANTYHING but live capture.  The OS is 10.6.8.
I only have 3 capture options in Premiere using the Blackmagic card: 8-bit, 10-bit or DVCHDPRO.  I want to use 8-bit, because DVCHDPRO is 960x720 instead of 1280x720.  But, I have tried DVCHDPRO and it did not work either.  I can successfully capture video for 5-10 minutes, but then I always get the Warning that frames were dropped and Premiere fails to save the video properly so that it can be opened.
I have used BlackMagic's speed test app and determined that my internal hard drive's data rate is plenty sufficient for both 8-bit and DVCHDPRO.
Final Cut Pro 6 has always captured perfectly fine using this exact setup.  It even gives me a lot more capture options for the BlackMagic card - I'm not sure why I'm limited to only those 3 capture settings in Premiere.
I would really appreciate some help to point me in the right direction to get this resolve.  Thanks!

    Randal,
It might be a bit tough on a fast computer, especially if the BIOS are not set to show POST at boot-up, a common setting nowadays. As Steve says, the exact key will differ by your BIOS brand.
You may not actually see the particular logo screen, that Steve is talking about. I'd do a cold-boot and immediately tap the ESC key. If this does not get you into your BIOS Setup, then repeat, but tap the F1 key. When I say "immediately," I mean immediately upon hitting the Power On button.
With older computers, you had about 5 sec. to get into Setup, but not anymore. On my laptop, I still have trouble hitting the F8 key fast enough to boot Windows into Safe Mode. I miss it, more than I get it. Could also be that I've been away from gaming for too many decades, and my gunfighter reflexes ain't what they used to be, but I'll just blame it on faster computers. I have the same problem with trying to flush my Preferences in Adobe programs, gotta' hit the Shift-Ctrl-Alt key at precisely the right time. [Exact key combo does differ with some Adobe programs]
Also, if you can give us the name of your BIOS, say "Award," we might be able to give the exact key to hit for Setup. If you have the MoBo manual, it will be in there, plus the correct key. You still have to be quick, however.
    Good luck,

  • Capturing Timecode during Live Recording

Ok, I am recording a live show.. to a DSR-45 and simultaneously want to digitize the footage with timecode.
I've been avoiding headaches by recording in "non-controllable" device mode, but now would like to figure this out.
If i put the Record mode into FirewireNTSC i can see the footage and see the timecode in my FCP Record Window Pane but when i hit the "Record Now" button i get about 2 seconds of footage then an alert message... "End of Tape reached".
I am using my Laptop for this process. Not sure if a full blown Desktop Mac with a Kona 3 would work in this "pass through" mode of recording.
Is there a way for this to work on a Laptop?

If you are capturing a live feed, you need to use 'non-controllable device' and 'capture now'. In this situation - there is no external timecode .
The file will generate it's own TC based on 0:00:00:00 as the beginning of the file.
If you need to correlate the live capture to the tape (if you ran one) later, auxiliary TC can be used.

  • Video layer under lower third dropping out during share from Final Cut X

I am having a problem when I "Share" an H264 video file or when I upload directly to Youtube.  The Video that is under my lower thirds sometimes does not get output.  The video is there and plays fine when I hit the spacebar but when I "share" the project in some of the places where I have a lower 3rd the video is missing with on the the lower third being visible over black.  Any audio in the video is also missing.  Re-rendering often fixes the problem but it a real pain in an half hour show when I am crunched for time.
Is anyone else having a problem like this and what is the solution?

This really seems to be a problem with some corrupt render files.
Delete render files, turn off background render and do not rerender before export.
Also, export to your hard drive first, then use the browser to upload. That way you have a chance to make sure it is all ok, rather than wait for the upload and conversion on youtube and then realize it came up wrong.

  • Live Capture with a camera via firewire and usb audio interface

I am trying to do a live capture through Final Cut 7.
I want the video feed through the firewire from my HVX200 and the audio feed from a 4 channel usb audio interface (Alesis iO4).
When I have both audio and video input coming in from the HVX200, the live capture works fine.
However, when I change the audio input so that it is coming from the usb audio interface, final cut has an error message saying "Video is not available."
During the preview, I see the video clearly and am getting levels from the iO4.
But when I try to capture, I get the error message.
Is it a processor issue (I've attached my specs below) with problems handling 2 separate inputs?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi MtD,
Yes I am changing the Capture preset to iO4.  Once that happens, it lets me run both the camera and the iO4 into the laptop but then an error message pops up the moment I try to capture it.
I was only trying to use 3 out of the 4 channels of the iO4.
    Thanks!

  • When I export to AME (cc) my lower thirds keep shifting position.

It looks fine on Premiere CC in my time line.  Its all in place even in the export window its aligned with my logo and text. But the as soon as I send it to AME and start rendering it shifts to the side and its no longer aligned with the text and logo.  Its driving me nuts! I've had to shift the lower third a few spaces for it to match on the render but its off on my timeline now.  its Please help!

Can you provide some more details? Are you patched to 7.0.2? What version of Windows?
I think this has been reported previously. What font(s) are involved? Does it continue to happen if the font is changed, or if the text is removed from the frame (give it some color so you can see the frame position)?
It would be great if you could show us a screen capture from the ID file (show non-printing characters) and the same area from the PDF. You can use the camera icon to embed the screen caps in a post:

  • How to make a lower third with an opacity gradient?

There is a lower third (name title) I saw while watching a YouTube video that I'd like to replicate in Premiere, in which it features what I would call an opacity gradient, rather than a linear gradient, radial gradient, or 4-color gradient. Here's a link to the very lower third I'm referring to:
    http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/h426/btpayne13/1AE07C32-91AB-4D3B-8A42-2D588B8BB83D-14 72-000000B4B5AD1359_zpsd04cb202.jpg
It appears to have a color stop opacity to it as well, but how can I get the lower third title itself to operate under an opacity gradient?

Taking another look at the opacity gradient lower third I referred to, it looks like the gradient doesn't begin to take affect until about 3/4ths of the way down. Up until this point, the opacity remains constant. It's as if they keyframed the opacity gradient to begin only at this point, but I doubt you can keyframe lower-thirds.
However, I just realized there is a way you can achieve this. It may not be the most efficient way, but it's the only method I could muster up and it appears to get the job done. Here's how: because Premiere does not feature a 6-color gradient (which would be ideal for this scenario), instead create two separate 4-color gradients under fill type. First, create one 4-color gradient, then specify each quadrant's color stop opacity all under the same percentage to ensure uniformity, say 60% for all quadrants. (I guess you wouldn't have to use a 4-color gradient for this first uniform lower third, but it may help to use it to visualize what I'm talking about.) Next, create another 4-color gradient and line it up flush with the first gradient. It is with this gradient that you will begin to level off the opacity. Set the color stop opacity of the two quadrants on the side that is flush with the previously created gradient to match the opacity of this first gradient (in this case, it would be 60%). Finally, move on over to the opposite side of this second gradient and pull down the color stop opacity to 0%. Voila.
I'd like to upload a YouTube tutorial to more clearly illustrate step-by-step how to achieve this, as you did, but I've never created screen-capture tutorials before. If I pick up some screen-capture software and post this tutorial, I'll share it on here.

  • Working with AE lower third creates master clip. How do I turn this off?

I've imported an AE lower third and I see in the bin instance that it has an asterisks next to it's name with the word Master.  Each instance of the lower third throughout my timeline is to be different but if I change one instance it replaces the text of them all. How can I avoid this?

Are you trying to use a Live Text template?

  • Professional Animated Lower Thirds, Transitions, and effect presets.

I shoot and edit a lot of video and would like to know of some professional template HD animations I could get to spice these projects up a bit. Some are business projects, some personal like weddings and parties, some are live bands or music videos.
Is there a company/site out there that has a great selection of these sorts of templates and/or even presets for fast/great effects? mostly I need animated templates for lower thirds, transitions, and intros...
Also, if anyone would like to share what they do in premiere for professional effects that would be sweet. Like what effects you use that I should consider to make the videos more interesting while staying professional...

I make graphic sequences from scratch for lwer 3rds in Premiere. Main tool being the title maker.
I start with HD sequence I'll call Lwr_3rdBking. On this I'll compose motion and layering of solid graphic clips created with Premiere's title maker, photoshop, AE, In camera FX shots, whatever works. I use the Blend option in the opacity controls to create some neat looks.
Then I'll nest the Lwr_3rdBking sequence, and use a 4 point garbage matt to draw a shape the size of a lower 3rd bar. Basically cropping the nested  Lwr_3rdBking sequence.
Then I'll use the title maker to draw a lwer 3rd box over the cropped and matted Lwr_3rdBking. I take care to match the size neatly. I turn off the fill color of the box I just  made, the turn on inner stroke, set it to bevel and adjust the bevel gradient. Shadow could also be added.
When I'm happy with the lower 3rd frame that I created with Title maker, I will lay it on top of the nested & cropped  Lwr_3rdBking sequence, The gives me a lower 3rd graphic that has motion within and is framed nicely.
If I use it repeatedly, I just duplicated the original Lwr_3rdBking sequence in the project window, rename it for it's purpose. Then add whatever text to the each new Lwr_3rd sequence.
It may seem laborious, but really once you settle on an initial design, the creation of subsequent title sequences is very speedy.
    Hope that helps.

  • Presenter View During Live Events In Show and Share

    Hi,
I am a bit confused about the user authorisation during live events of Show and Share. There is a user who is creating the event and publishing it. I think this user should be the moderator. He can see the questions tab and check the questions coming from the other participants and send them to the presenter view tab.
I have found some information about the moderator and presenter in the user guide for show and share but I could not find out which user can be a presenter, or are the presenter and the moderator the same user or not.
    Below is from user guide:
The live event moderator pre-screens these incoming questions and comments as they arrive. Moderators can:
    • Move any high-priority questions to the Presenter’s View tab. • Move any low-priority questions to the Removed Questions tab, either manually or automatically by keyword. • Use keyword filters to see and manage only the messages that match those keywords.
. The presenter then responds to any number of these pre-screened questions and comments. (These are messages that the moderator moved to the Presenter’s View tab.)
From the above information, it seems that there are seperate presenter and moderator, but is there a way to assign a user other than moderator only the presenter rights?

Great question, Ken!  I too would like to know if there is a way to transfer video content management to an other author.  In the case that a user publishes content and later leaves the company, retaining control of the published material is a requirement.

  • Lower Thirds from LiveType to imovie09

I am making lower thirds from the LiveType templates and would like to use in previously made projects in imovie09. When I import the template as a mov file, I can't get it to work like the titles in imovie - it simply covers up the whole clip. If I import as a jpeg, iphoto does not recognize it at all. Can you please advise?

When you build your LiveType effects, save the project file (it has a .ipr ending) and import it into FCE.
Place it on a higher track than your live action video. It will composite automatically. The .ipr can be treated exactly as if it were a video clip -it can be cut, transitioned etc
You can then got to the File > Export dialog and make a self contained movie that can be used in iMovie -this means you would export to either DV or Apple Intermediate for use with HDV or AVCHD material.

  • Lower Third changes brightness of image when played on TV

Hi, I'm a FCP novice editing my 1st short film. It's a documentary and I'm using the Lower Third effect in clips where I interviewed people. I noticed that when I play back the movie from DVD on my home TV, when the Lower Third bar goes away, the brightness of the rest of the image changes. Specifically, it gets darker. Is this normal? Is there something I should do to prevent it?
Unfortunately, I only have an LCD for monitoring during editing, so I don't know if this is a general CRT thing or if it's something weird about my TV. But I don't see this sudden change in brightness on the LCD monitor.

On many TV sets—not monitors, receivers—the video decoder creates luma error (technical term is distortion) from high chroma or high luma values.
Have ever heard a TV set buzz when a bright white or yellow super comes on? That's the luma bleeding over into the audio chassis. Similar distortion issue, one parameter influencing another. You need to check using scopes and not just rely on the safe filter.

  • Scrolling text - lower third -across

I need some suggestions on creating lower third text that scrolls across the screen.
I have FCX ( including Livetype ) and of course iMovie.
Everything there scrolls up and down. ( I think...lol...at least I can't find the answer )
I have searched for applications that would duplicate what I did on my title maker direct
to video and have been unable to find any answers.
Going back to square on and recording direct to film and then capturing and editing is of course possible but that would a long route for what seems to be doable on my computer.
    Any suggestions??

What you are talking about is called a 'crawl' you can do this in FCP, It's under text>Title Crawl. you can just create it in the viewer and BAM, there you go.

Try this. At the lower right of the viewer window there's an "A" in what looks like a film frame. Click than, the choose "text" -> crawl. Then click the "control" tab at the top of the viewer window to enter your text. Use the other controls to specify, the size, spacing, crawl direction, and location of your text.

  • Why is AE Pro CC not exporting my lower thirds properly?

Hello! I'm having a very strange issue today with AE Pro CC. Before I start in, let me explain a couple things:
    1. I have updated my Mac Pro to Mavericks; and
    2. I have downloaded and applied the patch that was released.
I can open, edit, and export my files just like pre-Mavericks; however, when I go to import them into Premiere via Import, I get an import error:
"The importer encountered a generic error."
Oddly, when I look at the exported files in Finder (which, by the way, do not throw an error during the export process -- I have clean logs), I don't have a preview thumbnail like I did before. Now, it's a placeholder Quicktime logo. Hitting space bar to preview them only offers the information window, which show "Zero KB" as the file size... but in Finder, it clearly shows the correct file size.
Opening the files in Quicktime gives me a "converting" message before opening (these are .MOV files that shouldn't need converting at all), and exporting them from QT won't allow for an Alpha channel, ruining the transparency of the lower third.
Anybody have a clue what's happening here, or having the same issue? It seems there's some new problem with Mavericks, or QT, or After Effects rendering out in RGB+Alpha .MOV ~
    Thanks for the help.

Sure -- it's actually all over the Quicktime forums right now. Lots of people having TONS of issues. Mine just happened to cross over into After Effects, because I use Alpha Channels in my .mov
