LR2 hangs when I deselect "Write XMP automaticly..."
When I deselect in catalog settings dialog the "Write metadata changes automaticly in XMP files" (or whatever it is called in real life), the system seems to hang.
I had previously imported several tens (or even few hundreds) of photos in LR during couple hours, but the CPU usage by LR2 was low (0-20%) and there was very little harddisk load, when I made the (de)selection.
In the first couple cases I just killed LR2 after 5-10 minutes, but yesterday I let it run for perhaps one hour. After that LR2 was responsive again.
I believe this was caused by LR2 noticing: "oh no, the user will disable automatic XMP writing, I have to write everything I have in the queue (oh why didn't I do it earlier..., the user will get angry now)"
I'm just wondering:
A ) Why hadn't LR saved everything earlier (it surely had idle time).
B ) Or was LR doing something else, what?
V
And if anyone is interested, this was on an oldish Win XP SP2 PC, P4 2.26GHz, 1GB RAM. Catalog is on an internal drive, images on an external one which is not fast (perhaps half the speed of the other, newer drive I have).

I am having troubles deselecting calanders, When i deselect a calendar, it automatically gets selected again?
I skimmed through this very long post but from what I read, this sounds much more like a coverage issue with your network than a device issue. I have not seen or heard of this issue before and I do not have this issue personnally and & I use the music app quite frequently while working in the yard.
The DND feature should not be a factor at all if you're sure it's turned off. I always recommend restarting your phone by holding down the home button + the lock button for 10-12 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Once the phone reboots, do a test to see if this has helped to resolve the issue.
If not, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Then, test it out again. Post back if neither of these solutions solve your issue. -
I've noticed over the past week that people have been seeing subpar performance with auto-write XMP turned on while running Lightroom. I think this warrants a more detailed response from the team.
Most people using auto-write will experience a minor drop in performance. This should be expected, as Lightroom is doing more work to transit your edits to files on disk. Again, for most users, this should be relatively minor and should not impede your use of LR 1.1 in your workflow. However, there are a few things in the auto-write code that can cause LR to grind a processor pretty hard and that I would avoid if possible:
1) Making changes to a large number of images at once (thousands). It takes time to write to the files and LR 1.1. is not great about backing off.
2) Shutting off auto-write for a long period of time and turning it back on. When you do this LR tries to sync what is has in the library to disk. This can take some time.
3) Importing large catalogs. There appears to be a bug in 1.1 where importing from a catalog can cause the XMP writer to think it needs to update the file. Not all large catalogs exhibit this behavior, but it's something to watch for.
4) Upgrading a large legacy catalog with lots of XMP changes. LR will try to write out the metadata after upgrade and that can take some time.
Essentially, you should be able to run fine with this option as long as you're changing small batches of images. If you're having huge performance problems I recommend you 1) make sure you're using local storage or a fast network for your image files and 2) try building a new catalog instead of upgrading a large 1.0 catalog and see if that helps.
I understand that the performance on this can be improved and plan on working on this as soon as I can. In the interim, there's only a few situations out there that I'm aware of that can make the feature painful to use. As long as you avoid those you should be able to use this option in your workflow. Please let me know if you find new ones so I can add them to my list of things to fix in a later release.
Thanks,
Dustin Bruzenak
Lightroom EngineeringHello All -
I have been searching the issue of writing/updating .XMP data files trying to get an idea of it's merits vs potential problems. With more than one search leading me to this thread I hope I am in the correct thread. I'll be honest and say that since the V1.1 release, I'm scrambling for information and understanding. Watching the vid's and reading all the .pdf I can get continues to keep me unsure on what seem to be very basic settings and practices.
Would any consider it good practice with the new catalog system to break up one's existing V1.0 database (now large catalog file) into smaller catalog's? Or, keep an all inclusive catalog as we did with 1.0?
It seems most do not choose to autowrite .xmp in settings. I followed that path when setting up V1.1. Noting that I am still using the one large catalog file created on upgrade, should I have synchronized my metadata at some point? Most of my photos show "resolve conflict" in the right panel metadata field. Should I do one large "synch" and if so any advice from the experienced on how best to manage/update, if needed, this synchronization would be greatly appreciated.
I have not experienced many of the slow-downs or processor usage some have spoken of. I have approx 2500 pics (with 5000 to come) that where in one large v1.0 file. Now it seems I can break this file up and fully use both my XPSGen2 PIV 2.4ghz Centrino, 2gbRAM with approx 200gb of space between my HD and a Maxtor 3200 USB?
With the specs listed on the above post, it looks like Lightroom will need much more spec than what I have.?.?.? Comments welcome.
Again, I hope this is the correct thread for this post and have made myself as clear as a slightly confused can. ;-)
Thanks!

Write xmp sidecar files without need to export masters - script
I've written a script to write xmp sidecar files for referenced and online images (the 2 conditions in the script) of the selected images. I looked for a while at system events and other stuff to be able to write the xmp file, but i'm not a programmer, so in the end i chose the long and dirty way to do it.
This script will export all iptc expanded fields as aperture does (creating basically the same file). It can be easily adjusted to include other tags, even custom ones. I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so. Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.
Here it goes (thanks to Brett Gross for the database part to find the master filename):

Excellent stuff!
I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
They are stored as binary data in the Version XML files at the bottom level of the Library package. You can also have a look around in the ZRKIMAGEADJUSTMENT table, but again the actual settings for each adjustment are in binary form.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so.
As far as I can remember, Aperture uses the 'proper' IPTC tag names when accessing them via AppleScript, so you may be able to do a loop through all the IPTC tags for each image, rather than picking out each specific one. But that would need checking. The EXIFTools site is a good place to find out about the different ways that IPTC data can be described.
Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.
Don't rush unless you feel like it - I've already started planning out a free (as in beer and speech) XMP importer with a GUI so that you can choose how to map the XMP CORE tags that don't exist in Aperture. You've given me an extra idea, though - if we can decide on a set of custom tags, my importer could map the XMP CORE tags to them and your exporter could export those tags.
Thanks for the work!
Ian
P.S. I'll check through your script tomorrow, some of the database tables changed between 1.5.6 and 2.0, so you might need to add in a version check to be really thorough. -
Microsoft Word Hangs When Opening Document From SharePoint 2010 Document Library
I am running into an issue where Word hangs when opening certain files from a document library. When the issue occurs, Word opens and hangs at the Downloading <Doc URL> stage. I have tried disabling the SharePoint plugins in IE and that
makes no difference. I can download a local copy of the file and open in just fine. The file in questions exists in a separate document library where it can be opened just fine (The file was copied to the library where the issue is occurring by
a Workflow). The issue also has only occurred on .docx files and not .doc, however, not all docx files are having the issue.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this?
Thanks.Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that when you opened a certain files from a document library, it hanged at the downloading stage.
I tried to reproduce the issue, after coping by a workflow, the .docx files opened well in my environment.
Did the issue occur in other documents libraries? You can copy the files to a new documents library by workflow, then check whether it works.
For more details we also can check the SharePoint ULS logs.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS
Have you check your IE settings (Tools->options->connections->LAN settings->uncheck Automatically detect settings).
Please also use fidder tools to detect the process. You can download it by the following link.

Before diving into the JNI stack trace, what does "hang" mean? Are there other threads running in your program? Is this the main thread?
Looking at the stack -- and Googling libhpi.so didn't turn up much for me, other than similar complaints -- it looks like it's an output routine. What are you writing to? A local disk, or one that's remote mounted?
Edit: absolute speculation here, but I suspect that it's a routine that's called when an in-memory buffer's full, in order to physically write the data onto whatever medium you're writing too. So probably not worth looking for an actual "buffer overflow" that's damaging memory. -
On the advice of an article saying XMP sidecar files are a safer alternative to relying only on the catalog, I recently (June 16, 2014) turned on write XMP files. Now all my JPG and raw files have the same modified date of June 16, 2014, making it impossible to know which are the most recent files, etc.
Is it possible to change this behavior to only create these files for new images - or to stop this behavior?
I'm reverting to a backup of all my files and turning this option o ff for now.
ThxI assume your raws are in DNG format? If xmp is in sidecar, it won't change raw file date.
Anyway, saving xmp does not change any dates in Lightroom, so you should still be able to sort by edit time or capture time...
But if you want control, you have to save manually instead of automatically.
Two things that might help:
1. Filter based on metadata status.
2. robcole.com - DNGPreviewUpdater

Premiere Pro CC v7.0 - MP3s corrupted during import with "Write XMP ID to Files on Import"
Premiere Pro CC v7.0 - original MP3s corrupted during import with default "Write XMP ID to Files on Import" option
I have just started using a Trial version of Premiere.
I have a folder full of corrupted MP3 files after attempting to import them into Premiere.
After searching these forums I found that some other people have had corruption issues during import of media and it was related to the Preferences->Media->"Write XMP ID to Files on Import" option.
I attempted to import additional MP3s (this time making backups first) with and without the Write XMP ID option, and have found that this is where the issue is.
While the MP3 files still fail to be imported, the files are not corrupted in the process when the Write XMP ID option is unchecked.
Writing to files that are being imported seems to me like unexpected behaviour for any software.
Adobe please advise!
Is there any way to recover my original MP3 collection? What exactly is wrong with them?

Preview hangs when attempting to print documents....
Since upgrading to Lion. Preview hangs when attempting to print documents....
Will not even open the print dialog window and results in having to use Force Quit to Exit. Anyone experiencing the same? Any ideas?Just notices the other threads actually. Interesting about the Canon print drivers, as I do have UFRII Canon drivers loaded. I have a number of different Printers, including Lexmark, HP Plotters and Canon.
The hang log doesn't come up after the crash. But I think this the Entry in Console relating to the last time it went down:

Write XMP Data into Adobe Illustrator
Hallo Forum, an XMP question.
I generate a String-Chain of words in an EXCEL VBA MACRO
At the moment I copy paste them on the Keyword field because I'm not able to write them automatic in the keyword field.
Somebody know's how I can transfer via VBA from EXCEL this Strings to Illustrator ?
Thank youUnfortunately I'm on windows. What I was looking for is adding timecode xmp start code to *.mov files from Canon 7d or 5d so I have timecode to use throughout Premiere which would make my editing much easier as we shoot approximately 100 video clips in the wedding ceremony and need to edit that in multicam w/ 2 other cameras running the entire time.
I did some more research and was able to add this metadata using xmp to the MOV files however unfortunately premiere completely ignores this data. Seems like premiere only accepts using timecode data for DV or MXF files and no others (tested CS5 and CS5.5). What a shame! It seems like this should be much easier thing to do. I know it's pretty easy using FCP and if Adobe is really trying to lure away FCP users, they should get something this basic running smoothly. -
I need to write xmp files. These files will I then be imported in other applications like PhaseOne's Media Pro. The rest of my application is writen in C# so I need something that works with C#. Are there any libraries to do this? Ideally, there is some xmp object that can be serialized.
The only way that I could get Lightroom to write the xmp files for these specific files was to make a change to all of them AND I had to turn on Automatically write changes to xmp files in the catalog preferences section. If this option was not set, even after making a change to the files, Lightroom would not create the xmp files.
So I finally got the program to create the xmp files, I just can't understand what's different about these 93 files that insisted on having xmp writes turned on globally before any xmp files could be created. I turned off this global setting after creating the needed files.
The whole purpose of this exercise was to change the Lense Description to a Sigma 10-20mm F4 from a Tamron lense. I found a shareware program that allowed me to select a directory of files and make a global edit to all 93 xmp files at once. I then read the XMP files back into Lightroom and everything is right with the world.
Is the option of NOT changing the lense designation within Lightroom a XMP limitation or is this a design decision of the LR engineering team? It sure would be nice to have the option to PAINT the changes (in this case lense description) from one image to the rest of the group, if one chose to do this. -
Labview OI executable hangs when started.
Hello,
Specs:
2 Systems running:
Dell Precision workstations 670
Windows 2000
Labview 6.1
TestStand 2.0.1
I have compiled the Labview custom Operator Interface (slightly modified) into an executable file (SPR_TSM.EXE) which I installed on each machine. However, on one of the machines when running the executable, the application just hangs at the initial "loading" screen without even displaying the window (just a white square). Then I need to end the process from the task manager. The only way I have found to run the application is to open the SeqEdit.exe (sequence editor) which in turns opens my application because of using the TestStandLVGUIRTS server (!?). The same application runs OK in the other system. I have tried in several user accounts and the problem persists even for users belonging to the ADMIN group. All permissions in the C: driver were set to FULL CONTROL for EVERYONE.
Please let me know what can else I do to solve this problem. Thanks for your help. Thanks very much for the info. It seems to be working, however not as I expected. For this machine I have the application (spr_tsm) running from a batch file that does:
spr_tsm /RegServer
spr_tsm
I tried just registering the application in the command prompt and then running the executable, but it still "hangs" when called from the shortcut. On all occasions I have confirmed that the TestStandLVGUIRTS is listed in the dcomcnfg screen.Another interesting note is that when uninstalling the application there is always an error "Write permission to the Registry denied, LABVIEW Server not unregistered" but it removes TesStandLVGUIRTS from the dcom list. Again, thanks a lot for the info! -
Hi Nokians,
A moment ago, when I click "green" key to answer a call, my E71 hangs (No backgroud application is running)
E71 is a great device but as days go by, more and more issue happened (refer below).
I cannot accept a phone that hangs when answering a call. It does not improve my productivity at all. My previous Treo 680 had the same problem, that is why I switched to E61i, and now E71.
To Nokia: you better improve! Cause E71 may be my last phone from Nokia.
List of bugs
1. Active Notes does not appear when call is make to the linked contact
2. GPS not able to lock to satellite, and display current location on map (solved by changing the positioning server to supl.nokia.com)
3. I connect to the email account and retrieve emails, the application shut down and returns to the home screen.
4. I have 2 e-mail mailboxes, the 2nd mailbox disappeared when auto-retrieval is turned on, all e-mails are lost!
5. Unable to terminate/hang-up when called number is busy (partially solved if automatic redial is diabled) or when an incoming call ends.
6. When set powersaver to "None", when the screen goes to power save mode, it display a time. The time stops at that moment. And will no tick at all.
7. Automatic Retrieval > E-Mail notifications > only in home network . When I open an incoming SMS, a warning message appeared, "Messaging: Memeory Full. Close some applications and try again." . I checked my phone's memory, it has 95MB free memory. I need to disable E-mail notifications, then only I am able to open an incoming SMS.
8. The recent call list (in, out and missed) shows all icons as "mobile" despite the number is a telephone number.
9. I am not able to enable both
- Automatic retrieval > E-mail notifications
- Automatic retrieval > E-mail retrieval
E71 only allows either one of the above to be enabled
10. Sometimes, E71 will hang when answering a call.

Message Edited by mecool2008 on 11-Feb-2009 10:16 PMHi,
I am also facing some of the problems you have listed.
My frined has Nokia E71 but with older FM 100..... He do not have much problems.
Nokia has to fix these problems at the earliest.

RH 11 hangs when trying to compile parallel projects.
I'm using RH11, HTML Help. Help is compiled in automatic build environment using command prompt. RH hangs when trying to compile parallel projects in different sessions.
Hi Peter,
Thanks for the quick response. Here are a few more information:
We are using RH in a build server environment, not the UI, but the RHCL compiler directly. When RH is invoked, each compiler runs in its own process.
I would assume that command prompt compilation in a build server environment is fairly common in SW engineering.
I should also mention that this process worked perfectly fine with RH9. Since we upgraded to RH11 recently, the build generation process hangs directly after issuing the RH command prompt. The strange thing is that the hang-up occurs frequently, but not all the time. There are no error messages whatsoever that could give us a hint about the reason for this error.
We suspect that Adobe has changed their sign-in process because the process stops at such an early stage.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Can't click back button in Safari on Iphone
