Lsmod and modules loaded on boot

Hi all, i hope i'm in the right section of the forum
this is my lsmod output, i'm seeing that some modules are used by nobody (i guess the 0 means that...) so i was wondering if you think it's better if i unload them and blacklist on rc.conf

lsmod | grep " 0 " would have given a cleaner output.
How do you expect it to help your situation if you're unloading those modules? In my experience neither power consumption nor boot time get reduced by doing so. All you'll have are a few less modules which will have to be loaded again in case they are needed by certain hardware.
So, imho blacklisting modules should only be done if there is a conflict between modules or if you just don't want a certain function. For instance if the module pcspkr get's in the way of snd-hda-intel like it is (was?) with some intel systems. Or if you have two ethernet cards and they get confused by your system.

    Thanks all for advices!

Please clarify what you mean. If the bluetooth service is started, then there is a bug or something very very odd. IF on the contrary you mean that the bluetooth-related modules are loaded by udev, this is perfectly normal: udev autoloads modules according to your hardware, not to your services. You need to blacklist the loaded bluetooth-related kernel modules (check them with 'lsmod') and to blacklist them in the MODULES array.

  • Could any one tell me what is the difference between swfloader and module loader?

    Hi  All,
Could any one tell me what is the difference between SWFLoader and Module Loader in Flex3 in detail?

    Hi,
ModuleLoader is a kind of strange API that is really just intended to look like SwfLoader for modules that contain a single visual component, and hides most of the module loading infrastructure, which is all about class factories.
What I mean by "only loaded once" is that if you have several places in the code that call the ModuleManager.getModule("url").load() call, it will only ever get loaded over the wire and interpreted once, subsequent "loads" will just re-dispatch pseudo-load events to the new client.  In other words, the class factory is a singleton for a given url. Unloading is a totally different story.  As you note, not everything is truly unloadable, because there may be lots of references to stuff in
the module that will keep it alive and un-GC'ed.
I suggest playing with the low-level API so that you understand the backing implementation, and this should help you understand the limits of ModuleLoader.
The main difference between modules and applications is that modules have lower overhead, and they only ever get loaded once, no matter how many times you load them. If you're using the ModuleLoader API, keep in mind that you're losing about half the functionality of the module system.  I will assume that you are, because otherwise it would be obvious where to expose methods.  You might want to play around with the lower level ModuleManager API just to get a hang of what's going on - ModuleLoader is a pretty thin veneer over the lower API.
Basically, what you want to do is to have your module implement an interface, say IModuleWhatever.
Also try and refer to this link which was previously discussed in this forum..

    Thanks,
    Bhasker

  • No module loaded when booting

I installed a new program and added its daemon to rc.conf. But after reboot, the kernel modules disappeared, none of them loaded. I hurried to delete the daemon from rc.conf, however, no change happened. How should I do?
    arch 0.7

aufgeist wrote: I hurried to delete the daemon from rc.conf, however, no change happened.
    You lost me on that.
When you add the daemons to rc.conf in the array() it tells the system to load that module during boot thats all.
To see if the module is running do:ls /var/run/daemons
But, you say it hasn't loaded. If the above yields no module, do: /etc/rc.d/nameofmodule start. The other options are stop and restart. Thats how you load daemons manually in arch.
If you get an error message doing the above it may just be a configuration file that needs attention.  To better help us, which daemon is it?

    To answer your original questions:
Misbah wrote:If the module is preloaded will it work that way?
Yes. What I do is compile my own kernel with just the modules I need built into the kernel itself. You'll need to do some research into what modules you need for certain tasks though.
Misbah wrote:if i didnt blacklist or remove anything, and just put them all under the modules= list, would it be any faster?
Test it and find out. It's not always consistant across everyone's hardware/system.
Misbah wrote:If i add a module into modules=, i dont have to add the modules it calls on right? It will load those automatically? ie) I just have to add rt2500pci and it will call on rt2x00pci and rt2x00lib itself right? And those in turn will call on other modules that it uses?
    Dependencies are called automatically.
Misbah wrote:but I'm wondering if I can also gain any speed from simply having the same modules manually loaded as opposed to being autodetected and then loaded.
How long does module loading take at the moment? If it's not a completely unreasonable time, I would say you are going to gain a negligable boot speed increase comparable to the effort involved. If you are really wanting to pursue a quicker bootspeed, then compiling your own custom kernel is the way to go. Even then, if bootspeed from GRUB to login prompt is less than 30seconds, gains are pretty much negligable.

  • System boot occasionally hangs at module loading

Since I installed Arch, about 43% of the time that I have attempted to boot my computer the boot process hangs at module loading. I assumed that the problem may have been that I was autoloading my modules. I tried turning autoloading off and manually loading them instead but that did not help. Then (as a shot in the dark) I tried having autoloading on, with my modules still defined in rc.conf, but that only made things worse (understandably, I did not think that this would help, but I figured that it couldn't hurt to try).

I have the same problem on my thinkpad T500 after I upgrade the wireless card (intel wifi link 5300).
For a long time I didn't understand the why of this behavior, but some weeks ago I realise that the problem can solve it hard-locking the wireless card and unlocking after the step: "loading modules".
For more information this is the complete thread on thinkpad forum that I wrote when I try to solve this issue: http://lnv.lithium.com/t5/T400-T500-and … 870#M26238
I apologize if you do not understand what I mean, the problem is that I have some difficulties to express myself in English

    Hi,
I am having problem with modules loading. I haven't updated my netbook for a month or so (my motherboard was broken and it took me that long to finally repair it). After updating, which took ages and the installation size was about 2,2 GBs I have come across two problems.
First one is modules loading being failed. On boot, everything is said to be DONE in green but with modules I get red FAIL. I am not an advanced user, so I don't really know what to paste, so I'll paste errors.log

Months ago I have had problem with my SD card and did what it was said in this topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115386. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it is worth saying. The problem from that topic still exists, when I put my /home into fstab, I am still getting error, that's why I have my mount in rc.local.

    Hi,
I am having problem with modules loading.

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox module "vboxdrv" - loading at boot

I can manualy boot the "vboxdrv" module using
    sudo modprobe vboxdrv
and this works every time - I can use Virtual box withouth problems. I would really like to load this module at boot time using the "/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg" file and then recompile the image using mkinitcpio -p. I edited the file like this, but the module doesn't get loaded.
    LABEL arch
    MENU LABEL Linux (Arch)
    LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
    APPEND root=/dev/sda3 rw init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd vboxdrv
    INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
I have seen that people useing "modeprobe.****=*****" command or something similar in this file to load modules. How should I use this to load vboxdrv module?

I don't see the problem in adding vboxdrv to the initramfs, when he clearly wants to have it loaded anytime he boots.
For the graphics drivers it's supposed in the wiki, too.
So I don't see a problem in adding the driver for virtualbox. but that's just me, i see.
When i follow your argumentation, there is no reason to add graphics drivers in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf because the drivers are not needed to mount the initial filesystem.
It's not only about mounting the real root it's about ensuring a succesfull bootup of the whole system and having graphics modules loaded early helps to do that. On my laptop for example there is a race condition with X11, which wants to start before udev figured out the appropriate graphics driver module to load. So it would boot into terminal and the display manager service would report "failed" as status otherwise.

  • Mac OSX will not boot, when I log in, it shuts down after grey screen and grey loading bar show up: PLEASE HELP (:

So here is a lowdown on my problem.
I start my mac OSX, I hold down the alt/option key and load my MAC osx drive (which is the only drive available; however, when i do not hold down the alt/option key it will go to a black screen that says "no bootable device, press a key when device inserted").  Continuing, it then goes to my login screen where I have my username, and I can enter my password like usual.  I enter my password, hit the enter button (like I always do), and this is where my problem begins.
After I enter my login and hit enter, the screen goes grey, with a little apple symbol in the middle and a different shade of grey loading bar underneath.  This grey loading bar shows up for about 10 seconds, fills up about 10-20 percent, and then shuts my computer down.
No matter what I do, this process repeats over and over, and heres where the problem gets worse, and this part is VERY IMPORTANT and is the most depressing, stressful part of the process.
NONE of the startup/boot commands work except holding the alt/option key.  I can't hold: Command plus r; command pr  to reset PRAM; shift to enter safe mode.
I really dont know what to do here :/.  I have files that I want on the hard drive, that are pretty important but not critical.  I gave up on wanting the files back but now I want to simply WIPE my computer and re-install a clean version of OSX onto the computer, but I CANNOT GET TO THE REINSTALLER :(.
More information that may be helpful:
I do have a partition on the HDD that I was going to use for Bootcamp, but it does not have anything installed on it (thus causing the "no bootable device" screen to load, and probably causing the boot commands not to work).
My version of Mac OSX is 10.8.4. "MBP 15.4/2.8/16GB/768 flash"
The last time I restarted my computer, my mac OSX RAM was down to 1.75 GB, with nothing open.  Usually when nothing is open the free RAM is around 10-13 GB (I know this because I have the activity monitor always open, and I use my computer a lot).
Again, boot commands will not work, except for holding the alt/option key.
So if anyone can help me fix my problem(s), which are:
1: using boot commands; 2: reinstalling mac OSX; or 3: getting my files,
I would love you forever.  I would really prefer 1 or 2.  Thanks for reading this.

Oh and one more thing, I do not have a disc drive in the mac osx.  The version I have comes without one.
I am very puzzled about what to do right now.

  • How can I find what apple ID I used to register my iMac when I first booted up? I am being told that by using this ID I will be able to go on to the App store and down load iPhoto at no cost. Is this true? My iMac does not have iPhoto resident on it now

    Thanks....

Launch Keychain Access and click on Login in the left hand pane and then on Passwords.  Next do search for Apple in the search field at the top and click on Apple ID Authenicication in the list that comes up.  That will give you the ID no. and password.

I am running OS X Yosemite on my four year old MacBook Pro which has become progressively slower and is loaded with applications I no longer use. I plan to start afresh by formatting a new 1TB SSD as a boot disk and reinstalling Lightroom 5 and PhotoShop CC.
Is there a list of the files and/or folders that contain Settings and Preferences which can be copied from the old system to the new?

with your cc apps you should try to use the sync feature.  that's never worked consistently for me, but when it does work, it's helpful.
there are preference folders and presets and settings that you could copy but you're better off installing fresh because a common problem for people with adobe program issues is a settings issue.

  • Boot-time module-loading trouble

Recently, I've noticed a fair bit of documentation discouraging the use of /etc/modules-load.d/ , as most modules are auto-loaded by udev. While that's true, I'm still seeing some need to force-load some modules that surprises me, and I was wondering if others see these problems as well.
    - "alsactl restore" is sometimes run (from alsactl-restore.service) before my sound drivers are loaded, causing it to fail with 'load_state:1696: No soundcards found...'
    - netcfg tries to start my network before my ethernet driver is loaded, causing it to fail with 'Cannot find device "eth0"'
I've worked around these race conditions by listing these modules in /etc/modules-load.d/ , which makes them load earlier than udev would do it, making me win the race. It doesn't feel like a good answer, though.
    - udev doesn't autoload powernow-k8 for me, which is surprising since CPU autoscaling driver are supposed to be autoloaded since kernel 3.4

    alsactl -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state store
no, rc.local{,.shutdown} should not be used anymore.
btw, there is also a udev rule for "alsactl restore" ( /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/90-alsa-restore.rules ). That makes me wonder why there even is a service file for this as well.
Are the alsa settings actually not restored or are they restored by the udev rule and it is just the service that is failing?
A good question. I never noticed that udev rule, and I never checked if the settings were right after I saw the service fail - I always just restored manually before using the sound.

  • Imac wont boot - i get a white screen with apple logo, and it loads to about 10%, then screen goes black

imac wont boot - i get a white screen with apple logo, and it loads to about 10%, then screen goes black

    Hey there mtriest,
It sounds like you are unable to boot the iMac successfully as it keeps shutting down when you try to boot. I suggest the troubleshooting from the following article named:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Perform a Safe BootSimply performing a Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.
If the Safe Boot does not work, or the restart after a successful Safe Boot does not work, go to the next section.
There is additional information in the article with further troubleshooting if needed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
