To answer your original questions:
Misbah wrote:If the module is preloaded will it work that way?
Yes. What I do is compile my own kernel with just the modules I need built into the kernel itself. You'll need to do some research into what modules you need for certain tasks though.
Misbah wrote:if i didnt blacklist or remove anything, and just put them all under the modules= list, would it be any faster?
Test it and find out. It's not always consistant across everyone's hardware/system.
Misbah wrote:If i add a module into modules=, i dont have to add the modules it calls on right? It will load those automatically? ie) I just have to add rt2500pci and it will call on rt2x00pci and rt2x00lib itself right? And those in turn will call on other modules that it uses?
Dependencies are called automatically.
Misbah wrote:but I'm wondering if I can also gain any speed from simply having the same modules manually loaded as opposed to being autodetected and then loaded.
How long does module loading take at the moment? If it's not a completely unreasonable time, I would say you are going to gain a negligable boot speed increase comparable to the effort involved. If you are really wanting to pursue a quicker bootspeed, then compiling your own custom kernel is the way to go. Even then, if bootspeed from GRUB to login prompt is less than 30seconds, gains are pretty much negligable.

  • STOP 0x0000007B after IDE mode on SATA 1.5 HDD / Endless Boot Time

    Lenovo IdeaCentre K410
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    - ST31000524AS 1 TB
    Added by me:
    - Maxtor 6Y120M0 100 GB (Diamondmax Plus 9 SATA 1.5 Gb/s)
    Alternate boot methods attempted:
    - (DVD) Lenovo OneKey 7.0 Recovery
    - (DVD) Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (FPP)
    - (DVD) Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (FPP)
    - (DVD) Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (LiveCD)
    - (USB) Windows 10/Technical Preview
    - (1 TB HDD) Windows 10/Technical Preview
    === DESIRED RESULT
    I want to use OneKey 7.0 (the OEM's "system default" recovery/rescue system) to install its Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit onto the 6Y120M0.  I will then use a USB volume to install Windows 10/Technical Preview on the ST31000524AS.
    === PROBLEM
    Whenever the 6Y120M0 (Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 1.5 Gb/s) HDD is attached to a SATA controller, any boot method other than (DVD) Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (LiveCD) hangs endlessly at startup.
    Thus, the OneKey 7.0, Windows 7 FPP, and Windows 10 boot media would show an animated Windows logo at startup and animate endlessly.  The HDD light would remain solid.  No further progress was made even when the computer was left alone for 35 minutes.
    This issue occurred with or without the ST31000524AS 1 attached.  If the 6Y120M0 was disconnected, bootup using any of the alternate methods above proceeded successfully and the HDD light would not be solid, whether or not the ST31000524AS was attached.
    An interesting side note is that when the ST31000524AS was originally being used with the OEM-provided Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, I was able to attach the 6Y120M0 and it would be detected as an extra volume when booting directly to the ST31000524AS.
    === ACTION TAKEN
    Sometimes a solid or hyperactive HDD light can be indicative of HDD failure.  Thus, I sought diagnostic tools from the HDD's manufacturer since I couldn't even boot into a Windows recovery environment to run CHKDSK.
    Since Maxtor is now under the care of Seagate and my MaxBlast CD from the early new millenium doesn't seem to work anymore, I downloaded SeaTools for DOS onto a CD and attempted to use it.  No HDDs were found.  It is also interesting to note that
    the ST31000524AS could not be found by this software when it was attached.
    After searching around on Google, I found a resource that suggested changing a BIOS setting in order to make the HDDs visible to the diagnostic utility.  Apparently, this is a setting (which I've never used before) called "SATA Mode."
    My BIOS gives me one of three options for this setting:  "IDE" (which I recognize as the parallel ribbons I used to install on my HDDs as a teen), "AHCI," and "Disabled."  The setting was on "AHCI," and the
    resource recommended changing it to "IDE."  After doing this, SeaTools detected the HDDs.
    A long scan of the 6Y120M0 found no defects.  There were no SMART warnings.
    However, I noticed something curious after running the diagnostic.  With the BIOS still set to "IDE mode," all of the alternate boot methods mentioned above were now working with the 6Y120M0 attached and there was no longer a solid HDD light.
    I was able to boot into the OneKey 7.0 environment successfully and install a new image on the 6Y120M0.  However, upon attempting to boot into the new installation, I received a STOP 0x0000007B error.  Switching back to "AHCI" mode, I
    was able to boot into Windows 7 on the 6Y120M0; however, the problem previously experienced of hanging using any other boot method persisted.
    I followed instructions elsewhere on these forums to have dump files written to %SystemRoot%\MiniDump, but was not successful - even after making sure that certain services were off, creating the folder on my own, and ensuring the 'Everyone' had full access.
    === INFERENCES MADE
    I explored several resources - including this forum - to try to find others with similar issues and further understand the significance of the SATA mode setting.  The 6Y120M0's connection points look identical to those used by the ST31000524AS and the
    DVD drive, so I am certain it is SATA.  The posts I came across were from users who suspected that there was something wrong with AHCI and that it was necessary to use IDE, but I read other comments that stated that AHCI is supposed to work just fine
    with SATA devices.  Many of the issues remotely similar to my own did not seem to have a definitive solution.
    Further research into the specific STOP error in Microsoft's Knowledge Base helped me learn that Windows apparently only installs device drivers necessary for use at the time of installation.  Thus, if you're using SATA, it's not going to install IDE
    drivers, and switching modes will cause the STOP error as a result.
    (source:  knowledge base article # 922976)
    Unfortunately, almost all of the references I see to this issue on Microsoft's website, Microsoft's communities, and even non-Microsoft websites seem to refer to this problem in the context of switching from IDE mode to SATA.  In this case, I am trying
    to switch what my OEM probably intended to be SATA to an IDE.  This leads me to believe that installing the IDE controller drivers on the Windows 7 installation while in ACHI mode and then going back to IDE mode will resolve this issue, but I have not
    been able to find IDE drivers from Microsoft's website.
    I wonder if it would be possible to use my Windows 7 Home Premium FPP (full packaged product) to do either a repair or direct driver installation on the 6Y120M0 while running in IDE mode.  I am thinking about doing it, but haven't done it yet because
    I'm worried that installing drivers from a FPP may alter the licensing of the OEM provided product.  I want to fully utilize the OEM-provided operating system (since I paid for it!) without the need to bust out my FPP.  Since the licenses and activation
    processes are tied to motherboards, the HDD is the only change that is being made, and the OEM's recovery software is fully willing to install to a non-OEM HDD, I see no reason why this can't continue.
    (I'm saving the FPP for a special occasion.)
    === DESIRED ASSISTANCE
    I'm 26.  Back in "my day," we used IDE to connect to our storage, CD-RWs to back things up, Notepad to build our websites, computers that actually made a beep when you turned them on, and master boot records to get them going.  (another
    thing I just discovered - some acronym that sounds like "Yuffie?"  Isn't that a Final Fantasy VII character?  whatever it is, I guess it's now replacing BIOS as we know it.)
    My dry attempt at humor notwithstanding, I feel that this is a potential learning experience.  I need you to explain to me (and anyone else who comes across this search result in Google - OOPS! - I mean Bing) what is /specifically/ happening and why.
    Please try to resist the urge to tell me not to use hard drives from 13 years ago.
    Now, while I wait for a reply, I think I'll go play a little Age of Empires II.  At least that's SOMETHING from a familiar time that still wants to work for me. .. well, as long as you remember to kill the explorer.exe process first, at least.
    *snicker*
    Thank you very much in advance for any insight you are able to provide.  :-)

    Hi Shane,
    Thanks for your detailed description.
    Just as your inference, it caused by incompatible driver for different device.
    Let's try this:
    locate to the registry below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci
    change its value as "0", and then boot into computer, change SATA mode to AHCI mode.
    After that, check the result.

    Thanks all for advices!

    Please clarify what you mean. If the bluetooth service is started, then there is a bug or something very very odd. IF on the contrary you mean that the bluetooth-related modules are loaded by udev, this is perfectly normal: udev autoloads modules according to your hardware, not to your services. You need to blacklist the loaded bluetooth-related kernel modules (check them with 'lsmod') and to blacklist them in the MODULES array.

  • Hp dv7 intel, windows 10 extremely slow boot times and lagging and glicthy

    I did the free upgrade and the boot time was really really slow. once it came up it was really laggy for a little bit too.i figured might of been an issue with the upgrade instead of a clean boot. so i erased and did a clean boot as well and still had the forever boot time with black screen.. i went back to windows 7 and no issues. has anyone else had this issue with the pavalilion dv7? if so what did you do to fix it?

    Hi there  & ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I have looked into the issue you are having with the boot time being slow on your Notebook with Windows 10.  I did some research and found a way to make the boot time faster. Although this site is not affiliated with HP, it has some great step by step instructions. The topic is called Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10.  Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. Updated Windows 10 drivers will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product. They will be released as they become available to HP. Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post and let me know how everything went. Thank you! Have a great day!

  • How to get a lower boot time in eee?

    I've managed to lower my boot time to 14 seconds on the asus eee, but I know it can get lower that that... Apart from recompiling the kernel (which I intend to do last), can you suggest anything else might help?

    I see that you mention milliseconds again, how exactly do you count these milliseconds? Since my last message, I've tried other I/O schedulers and three out of four get the same result. I believe that there IS a difference among schedulers but since bootchart displays the results in seconds, I can't compare them. If you could just tell me how you count in ms I could compare them and see which one is faster at booting the eee. In case you're wondering, noop is the slowest, requiring 16sec to boot the eee while cfq, anticipatory and deadline require 14sec according to bootchart.
    I'm talking about "loading" modules, not the full-boot time..
    After turning on the PC, there will be shown on the virtual terminal the time taken by Udev to load all modules.
    as you can see

  • Understanding the system log (boot time 2 minutes)

    Dear Apple Discussion,
    I am trying to read the system.log correctly - mainly because my boot time is 2 minutes.
    I have read that the beginning of the boot up is indicated by the line:
    localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
    is this correct?
    Next, does the line:
    loginwindow[165]: Login Window Started Security Agent
    indicate that the login window has come up?
    If both of these are correct then my boot time should be 18s (according to the time stamps in the log) - it defefinitely is not that.
    Does the boot process start instead at this line:
    shutdown: reboot by root:
    If this were the case, the boot time would be closer to 2 minutes according to the log (which is what it actually is).
    This then brings up the next problem: the two minutes basically come from the following line:
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt shutdown: reboot by root:
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt SystemStarter[177]: authentication service (194) did not complete successfully
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : unloading cisco ipsec kernel module.
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : detaching from interface: en1.
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : interface en1, filter has been safely detached.
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : detaching from interface: en0.
    Nov 29 17:30:24 Purrfekt kernel[0]: CiscoVPN : interface en0, filter has been safely detached.
    Nov 29 17:32:12 localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
    ending line of the boot process occurs at (if my above assumption is correct):
    Nov 29 17:32:31 Purrfekt loginwindow[165]: Login Window Started Security Agent
    So why does it hang for so long at this one process? Am I reading the log incorrectly? I have searched around here and also on google ("slow boot time", "cisco vpn tiger", etc..) but haven't found anything relating to my problem.
    Thanks for any help.

    v.1 PowerBook G4 15''   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    I am trying to read the system.log correctly - mainly because my boot time is 2 minutes.
    It appears to be that a restart or shutdown process delays nearly 2 minutes rather than a startup process, presumably due to one of WindowServer children or a bug stays in Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update-- Mine delays approximately 30 - 40 minutes on PowerMac G5 2.7 Ghz on every shutdown or restart process. Your computer is PowerMac G4 so that make sense. I found a suspect application which is a security related. Although I am still investigating further because the issue does not occur on the lower drive bay where I install another Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update (but no third-party software) as a test facility.
    localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us
    This is correct and the first line to display sequential events in a boot process.
    loginwindow[165]: Login Window Started Security Agent
    This is also a normal behavior.
    SystemStarter[xxx]: authentication service (xxx) did not complete successfully
    This can be displayed depending on a computer configuration.
    A sequential event from CiscoVPN: unloading cisco ipsec kernel module to CiscoVPN: interface en0, filter has been safely detached seems to be all right if you PROPERLY configure VPN policy and IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) authenticate, etc for your Cisco device. IPsec is a framework for a set of protocols for security at the network or packet processing layer of network communication.
    I suggest to check all related settings with Netwrok/Sharing panes and the router configurations for VPN (IPsec), IPv6, security, etc. Also check routing table and all socket connections after you launch Network Utility or via Terminal commands.
    FYI: interface en0 is a wired connection and interface en1 is a wireless connection such as AirPort. IPsec kernel module is a unit of kernel program or componet for IPsec.
    Hope this helps.

  • Logic "Pro" 8 - Loading / Boot Times

    I use both PT and Logic. They have about the same amount of plugs. App. 200.
    Logic's boot time is soooooo slow compared to that of PT's. after taking a long time to load the plugs then Logic needs for ever to scan the EXS Lib - Every time:
    As logic launched this morning I thought I'd make test. During Logic's launch I tried launching PT and quit and launch etc. until Logic was finally done booting...
    4.5 times - boys - that is how many I could load and quit PT while Logic was booting.
    Am I overlooking something obvious here or is Logic just getting slower with each version.
    BTW - Logic was of course booted without DAE... thus - natively.
    BTW2 - does ANYONE know if Apple plan to update Logic 8?
    Thanks

    Running L8 on a G5dual, opening my basic default template takes between 20-30 seconds.
    10.4.11 is my everyday boot partition.
    Experimenting with 10.5.2 and -not- noticing any longer boot time with Logic.
    Processor spikes and uneven CPU use in 10.5.2 (at least compared to Tiger)
    Only complaints right now are minor but annoying...
    Small d@mn fonts!
    L8 has noticably less visual appeal (aesthetics), too grey, too bland.
    Would like the old defaults of opening a full matrix (cough) piano roll when clicking on a region. Am I missing a setting?
    A few more similar nits & nats.

    How do you expect it to help your situation if you're unloading those modules? In my experience neither power consumption nor boot time get reduced by doing so. All you'll have are a few less modules which will have to be loaded again in case they are needed by certain hardware.
    So, imho blacklisting modules should only be done if there is a conflict between modules or if you just don't want a certain function. For instance if the module pcspkr get's in the way of snd-hda-intel like it is (was?) with some intel systems. Or if you have two ethernet cards and they get confused by your system.

  • Screen resolution at boot time and in single user mode?

    Hello!
    I remember back in 10.3.8 or earlier my Mac booted right away in 1280 by 1024 pixels screen resolution, thus avoiding the video mode change when showing the progress bar.
    I didn't manage to get it back to work this way.
    Reset NVRAM ( a zillion times!) didn't help, nor did setting the screen mode from the admin or root account.
    I'd really like to have it back!
    It's no fun working in single user mode on 640 by 480.
    I know this has been working with the original ATI Rage 128 and with the Radeon 7000 PCI I built in 3 years ago.
    Any ideas?

    Not sure if this is related enough, but I just wrestled trying to restore from time machine too, trying to reinstall 10.5.8 after putting a new HD in my MBP, 2006 vintage.
    That took sooooo long to get back to where I was before swapping disks; what did the trick was ordering a free copy of Snow Leopard install disk (free due to Apple trying to push people from idisk to icloud) which was rushed FedEx (yay) and which allowed me to access Time Machine where my ancient original OSX install disk had not.
    And all it took was 2 weeks of cursing!

    Do you have a Time Machine backup or clone?  If not,
    all is lost if you have in fact deleted your OSX partition
    and you will have to do a reinstall from Recovery HD
    and install all else.

  • When i open programs as NetBeans my mac shuts down, and then i can't boot it

    Okay so to be more precise, about 1-2 months ago my mac started to do weird things. Whenever i opened webcam or some other programs my mac shuts down, and then i would not be able to boot it up again, so i had to try to boot it in safe mode, resest NVRAM and all of that.
    If i try to boot it up normally it starts fine with the apple logo, then its changing into a clean white/grey screen, and if i try to boot it up in safe mode it becomes blue.
    The funny thing is if i keep to try to boot it, then it will eventually boot up, but still i can't use my programs for school (For an example NetBeans for my programming)
    At first i thought it was my harddrive, so i bought a 120GB SSD Samsung EVO and installed Snow Leopard. But it still ****** up (Tried to update it to Maverick, still didn't do anything)
    So i'm out of ideas of what to do.. Please help
    (I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010)
    Sincerely,
    Frederik Bang

    This is from step 2
    In step 2 i can't find anything like .crash
    I did it under Diagnostic and Usage Information --> System Diagnostic Reports.
    There's a lot of PluginProcess and powerstats.
    I even tried to filter with .crash and crash, but only 2 lines of something showed up when i tried "crash"

  • Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

    A few weeks ago updated and saw that on reboot I was getting messages from systemd that it was waiting for all my LVM partitions, and then finally that:
    'A start job is running for udev Wait for Complete Device Initialization'
    This has never happened before and I can't find any information about it in dmesg.
    Here is my fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # UUID=f9f12b36-2333-4c46-949a-0bd86e1ab254

    I've been digging around for a few weeks and I can't find anything and my boot time is really slow.

  • XP Mode Hibernates and Does Not Start

    I am running into an issue with XP Mode for Windows 7. I had it installed on my system previously and it worked with no problems. I uninstalled it becasue I didn't need it at the time but now I do need to have it on my system. I have downloaded the XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC from the Windows XP Mode download page. After installing both of the downloads XP Mode acts like it is starting and then goes into hibernation. The event log on my system shows:

    I have installed the XP Mode Update and still get the same error. Also, a co-worker of mine had a laptop with a fresh install of Windows 7 Enterprise and he is having the same issue as I am. Both of our laptops have virtualization enabled in the BIOS.
    Does anyone know what the issue is and how to fix this? As I said before I had this working previosuly on my laptop but now it will not work.

    I do have the latest BIOS installed.
    I reinstalled from the link and rebooted with a Clean Boot. I get the same exact error message in the Application log. I also got an Event ID 1001.

    It seems stuff from systemd-binfmt.service and systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service is not able to play with my nss_ldap config. With the default nsswitch.conf booting is as fast as expected.
    $ cat /etc/nsswitch.conf
    # Begin /etc/nsswitch.conf

    I think those "services" do some uid / guid lookups which ends with NOT reaching the LDAP server due to no network at this stage. I tried to put the netconfig earlier in the boot but i went into troubles like
    systemd[1]: Walked on cycle path to [email protected]/start
    Any idea how to fix this issue ?

    I found a workaround
    I get Network early available with the following steps
    Installed mkinitcpio-nfs-utils
    Modified the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    Added the module for the networkcard
    MODULES="atl1c"
    Added "net" to the HOOKS
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems usbinput fsck net"
    Run  mkinitcpio -p linux
    Added kernel parameter ip
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux ip=:::::eth0:dhcp root=/dev/sda1 ro init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd

  • Laptop-mode-tools and hdparm -B settings

    Since the change to systemd (I think so), I have a problem with laptop-mode-tools and hdparm. The hdparm -B settings (settings to park the hard drive) are most of the times not applied on startup of my laptop. But: sometimes the setting in the config file of laptop-mode-tools is applied.
    These configs I have in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf:
    # Power management for HD (hdparm -B values)
    BATT_HD_POWERMGMT=254
    LM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT=254
    NOLM_AC_HD_POWERMGMT=254
    If I check the settings of hdparm after starting my laptop (sudo hdparm -B /dev/sda), most of the times the setting is 128. Because I am afraid that my hard drive will damage with this setting, every time I have to do 'sudo systemctl restart laptop-mode.service'. After that, the setting of hdparm -B is 254.
    Does anybody know something to solve this annoying problem? Thanks in advance!

    You could write an udev rule. That's what I did, although laptop-mode-tools was giving me the same result - I just wanted to reduce the list of services for the sake of boot speed.
    Mine looks like this:
    /etc/udev/rules.d/75-hdparm.rules
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sda", ATTR{queue/rotational}=="1", RUN+="/sbin/hdparm -B 254 /dev/$kernel"
    You might have to change "sda" according to your system.
    Disclaimer (and friendly hint): I didn't come up with this by myself, I had to borrow it from somewhere on this forum.
    Edit: from here, but you can also find it there.
