Mac Genius messed up

The mac genius dragged my itunes folder from a shared folder into my music folder. The music appeared but none of my playlists and ratings. After some looking around he told me the old .xml file was gone and there was nothing he could do.
Backstory: we set up mbpro with two logins so my girfriend and I could use it. We setup a shared folder and directed itunes, iphoto et al to the shared folder. I went to the mac store b/c we never use the second login and I wanted to delete it. The mac genius said simple... obviously not.
The playlists and ratings took years to compile. You would think they would at least apoligize and maybe even offer me something for their mistake but they were rather indignant and blamed me for not having a backup and lectured me on why I should of had one.

Nope. That's the purpose of backups, especially for things that take "years to compile."
If you have a hard drive crash, the playlists and ratings are the least of your problems. +Everything that you purchased from the iTMS will need to be purchased again!+

  • My Meeting with a Mac Genius

So after many calls to techincal support about my whine issue, they finally told me to go to my local apple store and have a genius look at the machine.
So I made the long drive and finally found myself sitting at the bar with a Mac genius. He listen to my whine, played with his machine, read a few articles and came back. His basically told me that the whine is normal. I then told him that none of the cpu's in his store have the whine and that mine shouldnt be any different. He responded by saying that some whine, some don't. There was nothing they could do for me.
I was told I could return it and have them send me another one, but there was no guarantee it would be a whiner or not. However, since there is no real problem, I would have to pay the shipping fee. I was not all that impressed.
The Genius also told me that the bendy corners I had on my machine were normal. He said that all metal powerbooks do that when they are getting used to the new climate, but after a few months, it molds normally.
Does anybody besides me think this genius was on crack or not telling me the full truth? I'd appreciate your opinions...

I have a pretty general question. I don't know if this is the place to relay it, but, here it goes. What does a person look at when they go and look at the MBP? Or any other computer per se? I just got back from the Apple Store at Rosedale Mall in St Paul Minnesota. I was looking at the new MBP and was just wondering what I should do to really check out the machine. To start out, I asked the guru, what the manufacture date on these machines was..........duh, I don't know, he said. So I flipped the computer over and removed the battery and proceded to teach him the code for the mfg. date.(Which I learned on this forum) He was really taken aback when I told him where it was built, the year and the mfg week. I then asked him about the "whine" issue..........duh, I never heard of it, he said. What do these people do when not trying to pawn these computers? I thought that that was part of the sales requirement, to know something that was up to date with the equipment they are selling.
So I thought I'd vent here a little and use this post to do it in. Sorry, if I went out of line about this on this topic. I just didn't know how to check out the MBP, and thought that the people that sell them would know what to look for.
    Thanks:
    Lyle

  • Garage Band 4.1.2 on Power Mac G4 messed up

I had problems trying to change the tempo of the song, it always froze. So I tried to replace my Garage Band 4.1.2 with the same from my laptop that is an Intel one though. I guess that messed it up completely. Even if it doesn't show anything or doesn't tell that architectural thing it would start and freeze right up not loading the play button bar.
Is there any patch for it I can download from Apple or third party that would enable it to run on a G4 Power Mac/10.5.8 ?
    Thanks
    bafomet

It was hard trying to find anything on 4,1.2 for me. Everything was GB1 or 3 at best . There is a cd that's out there but no one carry's it in my town. One good way to go about it is watch all the tutorials & in apple seminars there are 3 videos totalling about 45 minutes of info. With that you will be able to get started & any Q's you have will be answered in this forum ,also check out http://www.bulletsandbones.com/index.html ---

  • My Mac completely messed up:(

Hi I wanted to install Skyrim but my Windows 7 partition was too small so I increased it but when I restarted my computer to start from Windows the only option was 'Macintosh HD' and no 'Windows' or 'Recovery HD' so I used the first one but I just get the Apple symbol with the moving circle and it stays like that for a long time and evenually the apple turns into a Ø kind of symbol
I decided to give up with the idea of Skyrim I think I give Windows a chance again and it messes my Mac up too so can someone please tell me how to basically make my macbook work like it did before I installed Windows

I tried pressing command+r to do the recovery mode and it says it cannot repair the disc:(

  • Apple genius messed me up.

I use my Macbook to work with video and audio constantly, and Imovie HD and garageband were really the only thing I did on it.
Recently I needed to reformat my hard drive and came across an error while doing so that required me to visit the Apple store. While I was there, the employee who was helping me basically assumed I was an idiot and it seemed like he wasn't paying a lot of attention to the things I was saying.
He didn't ask me anything, he just installed Leopard on my machine and sent me off.
Now, I don't have ANY FREAKING PROGRAMS. I can't even download Imovie because it doesn't recognize Ilife 08 on my machine, and I don't have any of my install disks.
I'm really upset to have lost all of the programs I work with and I'm wondering what I should do.
    Tl;dr- I'm whiny.
    <edited by host>

Restore them from your backup. If you don't have a backup then you can restore them from the installer discs that came with the computer. If you don't have the discs call Applecare. You can purchase replacements for a nominal cost.
It's not the genius' fault that you lost your discs and don't keep backups. If it's your work files and you don't have backups then consider this a lesson learned - develop a backup strategy and don't lose your installer discs.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Mac Genius said i need to replace SCREEN due to faulty Bluetooth module

    I have a Aluminium Macbook.
It is under Apple care. I took it in today because the bluetooth kept loosing connection and then the Mac says no bluetooth hardware found.
The Genius at the Apple Store said they need to replace the screen because the Bluetooth module "may" be behind the screen as it is not on the airport card anymore.
Can anyone confirm, in the Aluminium Macbook (2008) where is the bluetooth receiver???
    Message was edited by: alborz82

    Hi alborz82,
Correct. The Bluetooth adapter is not mounted onto the display assembly clamshell. It actually sits behind where it says "MacBook" which use to be the location of the Inverter board on the polycarbonate units (plastic). The Bluetooth adapter on the plastic MacBooks were mounted in front of the right hinge (wedged in between the hinge barrel assembly and the optical drive).
It's not "behind" the screen, but the unit does have to be significantly disassembled in order to get at the Bluetooth module.

  • Heat, PC Fanboys, and the Mac Genius

Well, the Apple Genius was right. I was talking to him about my apparent heat issues, namely the processor going up to 100C and such. Well, he said don't try to fix it yourself, you'll just void the warranty. That unless it is actually impairing the function of the Macbook, that it really wasn't a big deal or something to be concerned about (since when we have it on our laps, we're not running it at 100% typically). The heat is just one of those things and some people seem to have more than others. However, he said that the Macbook Pro is ushering in lots of PC fanboys/DIY-ers who love to have god-like control over their computers by modding them and installing their own stuff, etc. etc. That when things get "too hot" for their taste, they feel they must do something. However, in voiding your warranty in order to lower CPU temperatures, you're screwing your self over in the long run, unless you can very well disguise your modding. If you have some form of lap protection, how is it relevant what temperature the machine runs at. If 100C is normal operating range for a Core Duo, which it is, then why would it lower the processor's lifespan? How is this relevant if most people buy Applecare, which will see them through 3 years of ownership? What does one really achieve by taking apart the Macbook, other than self-satisfaction?
Ok, so maybe the Genius was skirting the issue. But the heat people are making too big of a deal out of and getting personally offended, as if the heat makes the Mac unusable, or that they must use their Mac naked against their bare skin. Again this boils down to people wanting control, not liking their laptop to feel like it is spiraling out of their control. I was like this with my gaming PC - spent lots of money on fans and a very expensive heatsink to let me overclock it 20%. The enhancements did little to make the computer run any better than stock AMD cooling. It just goes to show that these mods may work but really achieve nothing.

No offense intended, but a cpu will fry itself @ 100* C. Multiply *C by 1.8 and add 32* F to it. What do you get ? I come up with 212* F, which happens to also be the boiling point for water. Tell you what, next time you make spaghetti, get the water to boil and stick your hand in the pot.
Then think about what the electronics are experiencing. My 867 when doing an upgrade to the latest update gets to 63-64* C, that's very hot. Posting this it's 47* C and that's warm, so 80,90, even 100* C is ridiculously hot. What good is a notebook that's in the shop for repairs all the time ? Anyone getting a loaner while their's is in for repairs ?
BTW, until recently, stock AMD cooling wasn't that great and buying a $40 and more hsf to get it down from idling at 50-60* C to low-mid 30's C was worth every penny, especially when under full load, it barely gets to 50* C. The rule of thumb used to be for electronics, drop the temp 10* C and you double the lifespan. Don't know if this holds true anymore, but I suspect it does. It's hardly PC fanboys need to control heat. Nobody likes to have computer downtime over a fried cpu, they aren't cheap to replace, they aren't fun to waste your time re-installing one every few months. I like my systems to get a dust bunny cleaning every quarter or 6 months and that's it. That's more work than I want to do on a computer I bought or built.

    The security bulletin

Adobe Reader users on Macintosh can find the appropriate update here:

  • OK all you MAC Geniuses...here's one for ya!

Home environment. Cable Internet. Linksys wireless router. 2 laptop Computers (PC and MAC).
Up until 2 months ago, everything fine. My wife's MAC Powerbook started slowing down, but my PC was working fine. Did speed tests, they both are DL at close to 3mps...do everything known to man (thanks to people around here). I sell the Powerbook and buy a NEW MacBook Pro, and it is still slow.
The DL's are still around 2.7 to 2.9mps on both, but the MAC takes forever to go to most every web page...go to msn, google, whatever, it takes close to a minute, sometimes more, to load the page. Meanwhile, the PC is loading within seconds...BOTH worked fine a while back and DL is perfect...what could this possibly be?

There are some known issues with certain third party routers which are covered by my FAQ here:
    http://www.macmaps.com/WIFI1048.html
Try seeing if the issue exists connecting directly to the modem.
If you migrated data from the PowerPC Mac to the Intel Mac, you could have transferred some non-native plugins or drivers using the migration assistant which would thus cause certain things that normally are fast to be slow because they are running in Rosetta rather than Universal code. Did you use the migration assistant to move from the PowerPC Mac to the Intel Mac?

  • Permissions help. Need a Mac genius...

    Hi everyone,
I hope there's some kind of genius here that can help me with this:
I recently got a new iMac G5 and used the migration assistant to copy all my files and settings from my iMac G4. I choose to create a new account and copy the settings from my old account onto the new machine. The problem is, any time I point any program to save onto the desktop, I get a permission denied and it shows the path to my OLD account on the old machine. To explain what I mean, if the old account on the G4 was called OldUser and the new G5 account is called NewUser, if I point Firefox (for example) to save to the desktop in the NewUser account, I get a permission denied saying I don't have permission to write to Users\OldUser\Desktop.
I thought the migration thing would take care of this for me, but it doesn't seem to. Even trashing the preferences for each app, and then point to my current desktop, it still tries to write to the desktop of the old account.
Can anyone help with this at all? Where is this preference stored and how do I change it?
I'd love help with this and appreciate any info or help that can be offered.
    Thanks to anyone in advance

Thanks for the post. The solution over there wouldn't help me. I have created a new account with the name of the old account and I can change the privilages so I can write to the folder. The problem I have is I don't want it to write to the old desktop, I want it to write to the currently logger on user desktop. I don't know where preferences are stored that points to my default desktop location. If I could find and change that, Id be all set.
    Still having troubles though.

Why would my text disappear from my older blog archives while my photos still show up?
The text is still there, because if you bring up the html and view it in source mode you can see it...
but just not on the blog page... like if you used white font on a white background. Any ideas?
Even the genius's at the apple store couldn't figure this one out.
    thanks, mark.

thank you cyclosaurs... I've been AWOL lately and am tardy with this response. *I should be able to just republish from my backup files, right?*
    Mark,
    Not just yet.
What you should do is to publish your site to a folder in your local machine, then look for these xml files.
If these xml files are published and exist in you local machine then you can force apple to correct the problem - otherwise, you may/will face the same problem in the future, when they screw up again.
I will try to repost if I learn anything from the MME techs
    Jessica,
I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but I would leave your blog as it is for now... *it's a long shot, perhaps* apple can recover those xml files.

  • Mac genius turned on MacBook after spill

    Hi everyone,
This afternoon I spilled coffee (with cream & sugar) on my desk and it splashed onto my MacBook Air spacebar, command, option, control keys and trackpad. I immediately tried to wipe it off and then turned my MacBook off. Had an appointment a the Genius Bar about 3 hours later, told them what happened and handed it over. They took it to their back room to have a look and returned and told me that the trackpad was malfunctioning, that the warranty doesnt cover liquid, etc... and then turned the MacBook on to show me. At that point, the trackpad was working, but then the keyboard wasn't working right. I asked him what I should do, and he said my choices are either to send it off for a $755 flat rate fix, or to try and let it dry for a while longer and see what happens.
After reading these forums all night, I'm confused about why the Apple Genius would turn on my MacBook. From everything I've read, it should've not been turned on for a few more days. I definitely was too afraid to turn it on myself, but when the Apple Genius turned it on, he seemed like he knew what he was doing. Did that do a lot more harm to it? Should I even bother letting it dry for another day, or assume that since it was turned on (at least twice...), that it's a lost cause?

letting it dry out will help next to nothing, the "dry it out and turn it on" method everyone seemingly likes to do never accomplishes anything.
sticky sugary residue is left behind to bridge electrical solder points which causes short outs.  (hence sugar being an electrically conductive nastiness).
turning anything WET on is a bad idea yes.
You said "it splashed onto my MacBook Air spacebar, command, option, control keys and trackpad."
Damage was done. If it was very little liquid, then only your trackpad and keyboard are damaged and it will not make (assuming this by guessing from your statement) it to your important logic board.
thankfully there extremely few parts in a macbook Air.
as long as your monitor, IO board, logic board, and SSD are safe.......
but yes, spills migrate, and damage A leads to B....etc.
check your home owners policy to see if youre covered.
Laptop repairmen that are VERY skilled (worked with some and I was one) get frustrated over fixing spills, because dry residue is invisible.....
they fix things they know are bad, inspect for other, but when it works, they give back the repair.......unfortunately the only way to fix problems like this are fix and test......fix and test.....
people sometimes get laptops back as fixed but it crashes and the repairman is made to look like the dufus, but the fact is short of replacing EVERYTHING in the laptop, the dry residue in cracks and crevices is invisible, and sometime you have to just "wait for it to fail" before you can fix it again.
cant fix what you cant see...... Spills in such cases are ALWAYS creeping nightmares to fix,,.....because they often have to be fixed AGAIN.
