.mac mail checking problem

this is a very strange issue ... the Mail Program is not checking for new email automatically. this is happening for my .mac email only! i can manually check for new email (that works fine) but the automatic function (currently set to "check for new email: every minute") does not work. new .mac email does not automatically arrive in the Mail Program ...
the very odd thing is that the Mail Program works fine for my MIT email, which is also setup through the Mail Program.
i tried to resolve the issue through .mac, but they said there is nothing wrong on their end. so it appears to be something with the Mail Program
i've only noticed the problem on my MacBook, i haven't really looked for it on my iMac because it seems like when i leave Mail open on my iMac for a long time it completely freezes my apartment's internet connection! but that's a problem for another day i suppose.
anyway, how can i resolve the first issue? should i try deleting and resyncing my .mac account information within the Mail Program? or is there a way to delete and re-install the Mail Program? is there a place i can download the Mail Program? or an easy way to get it off the OSX install disks?
Intel iMac (and a new MacBook)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   yay mac

Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is Include when automatically checking for new mail ON or OFF?
Also, checking for mail so often is almost always unnecessary and can sometimes be a source of problems. I’d set Preferences > General > Check for new mail to Every 5 minutes instead.

  • I cannot send mail from 1 of my iCloud accounts using mac mail- smtp problem

Slightly strange problem today with smtp server.  For some reason timing out on po4 on one of my accounts.  Another account uses po2 and is working fine.  If I log in to icloud I can send messages so problem appears to be in configuration of mac mail.  I have not changed anything, I can receive mail.  When trying to change smtp I cannot edit the smtp box or if i do it reverts to what it was previously.  Any suggestions ?

  • Mac Mail Bluehost problem

    Macbook Pro
    OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
Processor  2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
My mail is hosted on Bluehost, I haven't changed any settings. We switched our website from Bluehost to Wix on Tuesday of this week, but the email is still hosted on a separate account with Bluehost. Since switching over there have been increasing amounts of time where the mail isn't downloading. The mail comes from a joint account, my business partner is using Outlook and has not had any problems, while my Mac Mail has completely stopped downloading, it's now offline all the time. I'm using POP I've tried changing to IMAP, tried different settings - ports - but so far no success. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Ernie,
Thank you for the suggestion. I'm not sure if there is a spam filter at work. I know that my Eudora setup doesn't do that. (It's Eudora Light, non-paid subscription.) But I do work at a college, and they may have a spam filter in their setup. I don't think they do, but it's possible. Your suggestion also gave me another idea. The college's setup is such that I can also get my mail via the internet. I will try to do that. If I can receive emails I send to myself through internet mail, then at least I would know that the issue is between Mac mail and Eudora. Does that sound reasonable? Also, do you think any of this could be related to a keychain problem? (Just a shot in the dark.)

  • Mac mail send problem

    hi
a problem with mac mail. while the laptop is at the office the mail program works fine, out of office it does not - it recives mail but does not send. we have our own mail server (leopard server) it's on the office network. We use IMAP. We connect via VPN to our office network so the SMTP is always the same. When the folder username-library-mail is deleted mail recreates it and sends mails for some time but then stops.
Thunderbird in the same macbook works fine using same SMTP port
    what causes this phenomena?

  • Mac Mail IMAP Problem: Actually Seems to Be an AOL Problem

For what it is worth, After much futile tweaking, it would appear that what I, and a number of other users thought was a Mac Mail problem, to wit, the need to Offline>OnLine to get mail, may actually be a problem with AOL (and possibly other e-mail services).
Apparently, AOL is manipulating its outbound mail port(s) to limit server demand. I've reached this conclusion after noticing how on weekends and nights, mail seems to work fine with AOL.
    Comments anyone?

  • Mac Mail: Check for new messages doesn't work

    Hi,
In Mac Mail the setting at  "Preferences -> Check For New Messages" I have set for manual and yet Mail still fetches emails when I haven't asked it too. I previously had this setting set to check for messages every hour but it ignored that setting too so I set it to manual but this setting is ignored. Ideally I'd like to check mail every four hours but there isn't a setting for that.
I'm running Lion and have IMAP email accounts.
Any idea how I can get Mac Mail not to ignore my Check For New Messages setting?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the link. Well I never would have found that out without some help. I saw the IDLE in the IMAP settings I didn't know it was a kind of PUSH / FETCH thing. Anyway I've got it on manual now and only seems to get emails when I send one or press the button. I've only changed it a little while ago so I hope this is actually fixed.
Thanks again it was driving me nuts!

  • Mac Mail has problems to display HTML embedded images

Well Im new here , but have a real problem.
I create  HTML pages with embedded images and send them off as MIME/multipart etc. mail through active server pages.
So far so good. All PC users see the mails with 2 embedded images at correct positions using windows e-mail .
However all Mac users receiving this mail have a problem,  then MAC mail show embedded images just as a box , the 2 images become attachements of the email.
If a PC user forwards such a  received HTML e-mail to a MAC user , the MAC Mail sees the 2 images are correctly displayed.
Thanks for hints and comments .

    Hello BDAqua
Thanks for the dump hint - I could use it.
Well I have not been able to track down the exact cause of the problem, but at the end I have succeeded to see the pictures even on the Mac. Initially , because I tested the HTML code against Safari/Foxpro/IE9 with success and the PC's received it as a mail  perfect with the pictures , I ruled out the code.
After sending it with various different parameters for 7-bit coding , multipart/alternative; multipart/mixed, with and without alternative ascii-text body, etc. and having no change of the problem (in one instance Mac stuck the pictures at the end of the mail instead of having it as attachement - but never displayed inside the page) I thought about the HTMLcode again (the mail small but was consisting of a cluster of multi nested tables, where in the pictures where placed). I started from scratch with one simple table and one picture - and saw it also on the Mac, so repeated reconstruction every table layer and picture with testing each step again - and at the end - it worked all. So my conclusion is that the mentioned browsers and windows mail are made more HTML fault tolerant for little code mistakes than mac mail.  It seems that when forwarding the page from windows-mail to Mac mail , windows even corrects and thats why then it was seen ok on the Mac.
I think that a number of people had similiar experiences. I contacted one advertising company (all Mac freaks and only Mac's there, they do a lot of Internet/Intranet design and develeopments for large companies) and asked them wether they know of any hints or problems - they simply said forget it it's not possible - which is not true - but seeing the HTML correct in all browsers doesn't mean it might ok for the mac mail.
Well any way I now know where I am and know where to look if suddenly a picture is not shown anymore...
Thanks for the help and all the best.
    Rgds

  • Bizarre Mac Mail Identity Problem

I have a most bizarre problem and I'm dearly hopeful someone out there might help me understand what is happening.
We have an email account that runs through Google Apps.  I'll call it "sender@mydomain"  This email account + a regular gmail account + other email accounts are set up on my macbook pro running Yosemite.
    Here is what happens:
    1. An email is sent from the regular gmail address, which I'll call "sender@gmail"
    2. On the receiving end, the sender email doesn't show as "sender@gmail" but "sender@mydomain"
In other words, some how the "sender@mydomain" email identity is OVERRIDING the email indicated as the sent email.
At first I thought this was limited to only the regular gmail, BUT the "[email protected]" also overrides all other accounts sent from this computer, including the iCloud account!
I hope all of that makes sense. Has anyone ever had this kind of problem before? Any idea what might be causing this problem and how I can fix it?
Many thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
    Cheers,
    Tim

Open Mail Preferences, and go to Accounts tab. Check you gmail account and that the correct SMTP server is selected for this account.
Do the same for other accounts selecting them one-by-one.

  • Mac Mail Sync Problems

I'm trying to get OS X Mail to sync with my hotmail and gmail accounts.  I can get it to fetch, but it won't sync the other way.  When I open those accounts on other devices/computers, all the mail I read on my Mac still show as unread. It works fine on my iPhone iOS and I want it to work the same on my Mac.  Attempts at googling this mostly come up with "it's a pop problem, talk to hotmail" which sounds good, but why does it work on my iPhone?  I hope I explained this enough and any help would be appreciated.

    Hello harald16,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If I were you, I'd start with troubleshooting the Mail application by following the steps in the following article:

  • Question! Mac Mail font problem

    Q. I'm getting small numbers instead of text when recieving mail. They also appear prefixing sender details. I have changed type style in preferences but doesn't help???

Try deleting the font 'Helvetica Fractions' and see if this sorts it for you. You will need to quit Mail and relaunch it after you delete the font.
Hopefully this is helpful or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • Mac Mail turn off grammer check

I want my Mac Mail to check spelling before I send a message.   However, I want to turn off the check grammer option because, quite frankly, it is not very good at it.
Is there any way to have Mac Mail check spelling and not check grammer?
I have looked under Preferences and there is an option to "Check Spelling when I click send" but nothing about checking grammer.

I had tried that, but it was always greyed out.  I found that I had to have a message being composed in order to change that selection.
Sort of weird that some of these 'preferences' are under preferences, and others are not.
Now if Apple can just get spelling and grammer to be a bit smarter, I will be thrilled.

  • Mac mail 4.5 and yahoo mail

Anyone else having problems with mac mail 4.5 and sending mail with yahoo.mail server.  Mine is so erratic It's driving me crazy.  It works fine for a while then all of sudden it will just stop working for days at a time.  This happens without me changing any settings whatsoever.  I have other mail programs using the same servers AND THEY WORK FINE.  So this is total crap.  When I try getting help from my ISP they said it is a mac mail problem.  When I try to get help from APPLE (which is pretty much non existant) they say its an ISP problem.  The only thing I know is that its' my problem and I've given both these companies tons of money and they've left me hanging out in the breeze with arguably the most basic and important funciton of having a computer and an internet connection.  Screw them all I say.
Anyone out there to help with this quandry.  By the way I've used mail connection doctor.  It has problem connecting to the outgoing server, but then it does and says all is fine.  But I still cant send mail.  I go back to connecton doctor and do a "check again" and now it CANT connect.  Jeez this is just awful

  • Gmail on Mac Mail on 2 Computers?

So I set up Gmail accounts for my wife and for me through Mac Mail no problem. We got and sent Emails just fine. This was done on my Macbook. I wanted to set up her iMac to do the same. So I punched in all the same numbers and configurations, but it doesn't quite seem to be working right. The Gmail messages that were in the inboxes on the Macbook are not in the Inbox on the iMac.
I thought this would work since it does with .Mac mail. Whatever I do on my Macbook shows up on my iMac with that.
    Solutions or Suggestions?
    Thanks!

I thought this would work since it does with .Mac mail.
But .Mac uses IMAP, which is a protocol that was invented precisely to allow this. You access Gmail in Mail through POP, which is an entirely different protocol and doesn’t work the same way. Moreover, Gmail POP access in particular doesn’t even work as a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded Gmail messages available for POP access again, you must log into your Gmail account with a web browser and re-enable POP downloading for all your messages, which will cause everything (and I mean everything) still there to be downloaded again.
    3. Any Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. The reason is that, after being downloaded, those messages are no longer available to any mail client, not even to the same client that has just downloaded them, not even for deleting them or checking whether they are still there.
    4. Messages created and sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were incoming messages. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent -- as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is.
    5. Messages created and sent using a POP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in 4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. They would, however, be downloaded if Gmail settings were changed as described in 2 above.
    6. As a particular case of 5, messages sent to yourself will appear in your Inbox on the web, but cannot be downloaded by either the same or any other POP mail client.

  • Mac Mail Smart Folder to organize HR applications?

    hi all.
i am looking at purchasing filemaker for our business and am wondering if this might not be more easily solved WITHIN Mac Mail.
one problem we have is with incoming resumes and portfolios via email. normally this is an EMAIL and a COVER LETTER (doc or pdf) and a PORTFOLIO (in pdf format). i am wondering if there is some step by step instructions or perhaps some help or ideas that we should look at on how we might organize this info in Mac Mail or if it makes more sense to try to do this in FileMaker or even something else like one of the Devon products.
right now we are printing these out and it is really inconvenient.
a couple items i am noticing is that the FILENAMES of the attachments do not always have the applicants name in it and the cover letter is not always a separate file but is sometimes in the /body/ of the email (we currently use Mac Mail and Sparrow). also, while in the past we have tried to organize pdf's on the HARD DRIVE after we have downloaded it, /most/ of the incoming emails do in fact have a HEADER in the email that associates the applicant with the JOB POSITION. this would help a great deal in the sense that if we could use this it would "pre-sort" the applicants and we could then SORT FURTHER by adding tags or information after the information was already in a database.
    any help would be appreciated.
    TIA

    hi. thanks.
i have two problems with this.
the first is that the emails that came in do not have any particular identifying information in them and there are emails for at least a year but probably going back three years. i don't want to have to search through all my emails in order to find these. i want to organize them in my computer instead of having them organized in paper as they are now.
so if i could get into an attachments folder i could take them out and cross reference them against the paper versions once i grab them. this would be much easier than searching for them one by one i think. i mean, i should start a new thread for this question but i also have .doc files and likely other files and Mail Search does not seem so robust.
so. once thing i was wondering with the post was whether there was a way to sort these as they COME IN and moving forward have filters set up to catch them. this way if someone does not put the correct header on the mail (i.e. they are not paying attention) their email does not go into the folder but if they do their email does go into this folder and this way i have an /automated/ way of keeping up moving forward.
so #1 would be to figure out a way to get caught up (finding where Mail stores attachments if i can access them would be of help) and #2 would be to find a way to sort these automagically. i have posted to FileMaker to see if FileMaker can find these emails and portfolios as they come into Mail but the more i think about it the more helpful it would be to sort them when they come in as email attachments.
it is sort of a nightmare to find these and sort them even moving forward in "real time".
    THANKS

  • Mac Mail Alias

Hi all. I've just switched over from PC to Mac and am getting there, but still not quite there.
I've set up Mac Mail to work with my Hotmail account - ***@hotmail.com and it works great. No problems there. I'm now trying to set up an alias for ***@Rockfax.com. The Rockfax servers bounce any emails sent to ***@hotmail.com to my ***@hotmail.com account. This currently works fine with Mac Mail, no problems there.
However I can't currently send emails from ***@Rockfax.com. In a perfect world I'd get all the emails sent to both accounts to arrive in one Inbox where I can sort them (as is currently happening) but when I sent mail I'd get an option to either send it from ***@Rockfax.com or ***@hotmail.com.
Is that possible using Mac mail? I've tried following the apple alias help page and have gone into - Mail - Preferences - Email address and added in the line '***@hotmail.com, ***@Rockfax.com' . This gives me the option when sending mail to use '***@hotmail.com' - which is exactly what I'm after. However when the person recieves the mail it still says it has been sent from '***@hotmail.com.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I don't mind setting up a gmail or other equivalent email system. I just want it to appear as though I'm sending emails from ***@Rockfax.com
    Cheers!

    <Email Edited by Host>

I set up an "other" account on my phone, as you can't change settings in the .Mac type of account.
Go into your iPhone's Settings -> Mail -> Add Account -> Other, then used the following settings:
    IMAP Account Information
    Name: Myname
    Address: [email protected]
    Description: [email protected]
    Incoming Mail Server
    Host Name: mail.mac.com
    User Name: [email protected]
    Password: mydotmacpassword
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Host Name: smtp.mac.com
User Name: mymacid (note without the @mac.com)
    Password mydotmacpassword
...you can either turn off or delete your existing .Mac account on your iPhone.
This way you're using exactly the same settings as a default .Mac account, but you can specify the return address in there.
