Mac mail on Macbook pro not sending email suddenly

OS X 10.6.8
Mac mail was working up to yesterday.
NO changes to the box or mail.
Mail will receive but not send mail; alerts with an smtp error.
Installed Thunderbird, same problem.
Mac mail on an iMac, works fine.
Thunderbird on Win Vista works fine.
pop and smtp settings are identical on all boxes.
Turned off the firewall on the laptop - no joy
Searched and have killed/rebuilt the keychain several times.
Confirmed password is correct
I have not killed and recreated the mail account; if that actually works, let me know and I'll try again.
I have rebuilt the mailbox - no joy.
Ran the diagnostics and green lights on both pop and smtp so it seems that logins are working, just can't send mail.
Any suggestions?  Is there any reason that mail would stop working on the laptop but continue working on the desktop?  I'm not a Mac guy so I've run out of options and any pointers would be appreciated.

"Note all the settings on the functional Mac and then transfer them to the non-functional one."
That'd be the problem.  I've checked and double checked the settings/configuration; even went over them with my wife reading one set and me the other - everything matches.  So, I'm making the assumption that we're missing the forest for the trees and it's something totally stupid like a swapped set of letters or an L for an I kind of thing.  In order to totally eliminate these kinds of S.U.E.'s, I'd like to move a copy of the files that are the actual config from the working machine to the non-functional machine.
Since OSX is basically BSD, I'm kind of making the assumption that all the important stuff is stored in config files; I just have not been able to figure out which files and where they live.
Keep in mind that the laptop went toes up without anyone making any changes so I'm not totally convinced the issue is a typo.  I've searched for other reasons a system would stop sending mail and am not getting any hits that are meaningful.  If anyone has any ideas, let me know.
TIA

  • Macbook pro wont send emails...

When i first brought my macbook pro, i had no problem sending emails, it would send and make the 'wooshing' noise to say it had sent. I must have done something as i am not very experienced with computers, because now when i respond or send an email it will not send, it comes up with a swirling cirlce in the left hand collum. and next to that circle is a caution triangle, i click on this and the message read -
    "UNABLE TO CONNECT
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account "AOL" or try again.
The server returned the error. The connection to the server "imap.aol.com" on port 465 timed out."
And the only option that it gives me for that message is to press "OK"
BUT sometimes instead of the option "OK" it will come up with "Stay Offline" or "Take all accounts online"
i click "take all account online" and nothing happens, i still have the swirling circle and caution sign.
Please help as this has been an ongoing problem.
Also This has been sent by my son from a seperate computer.
    Thank you.

Open mail, click on the word mail (top left)
    click on preferences
    click on accounts
make sure all the boxes are filled in with the correct information (I don't know your info, you should be able to get that from your email provider)
    Description: is your email/internet provider
Email address: your email address ie; joe the [email protected]
    Full Name: your name
incoming mail server: pop(or imap) email provider (XXX.ZZZZZ.com
    User name: your email address
Password: whatever you chose for your password
Outgoing Mail Server: Call you provider
The outgoing mail server SMTP: is the server that is your out going mail. (There again I don't know what that should be set to) you can try clicking on the arrow on the right of that box. If there are more than one server on the list you may have to change to the correct server, you can do this by trial and error or call your email provider for this info. Once you get this correct check the box "Use only this server"
I hope this helps, but not having any info this is the best I can do. Good luck.

  • Macbook Pro: not receiving emails

I bought my Macbook Pro a week ago and Mail was working fine with my googlemail account until a few days ago when it stopped receiving messages. I can send messages and the connection doctor says everything is working. I know I have emails because I have checked online. Could someone please suggest a way to fix this issue or could apple offer an update to fix the problem?
    Thank you! - Aaron

OK, sounds as if there's a problem with your incoming server setup.
If you're using IMAP your username and password should be those that you use on outgoing server. Your incoming server should be imap.gmail.com with SSL selected (auto-port - do not override).
If you're not using IMAP, you should be. Gmail also has a page describing how to set up IMAP accounts for OS X Mail.
If this doesn't work, call back.

  • Mac mail will receive but not send, happened yesterday!

Hi, my mac will receive email but not send anything. I didn't do anything differently and it was working just fine before. Can someone please help me. I am trying to get work emails out and they won't send. Gmail and exchange won't send, it's not just one email provider. Please advise. I have looked up other forums and I don't think it has anything to do with the settings because it worked before.
    Thanks for your help.

  • My mail will receive but not send emails?

I am not able to send emails in MAIL, but receive them.  I use a gmail email account in MAIL.  I've never had a problem until a couple hours ago.  Anyone know of troubleshooting info regarding this please?  Thanks.

One thing you might want to do is search on google to see if they are reporting any issues with mail client usage.
Also, another option would be to reboot your Mac. Sometimes all you need to do to fix an odd problem with a computer is to reboot.

  • Mac Mail Rule - auto reply not sending while computer off

I created a Rule to send an out of office message while I was on vacation.  I made the rule active and tested it from a different email account, and it worked.
While I was gone my computer was turned off.  I was receiving emails, but no auto-reply message went out.  When I got back to the office and booted up my computer and opened Mac Mail, it was then that all of my auto-reply messages went out.  So, if someone emailed me a week before, they did not receive any auto-reply until I booted up my computer and opened Mac Mail.  If someone had emailed me 5 times while I was gone, they received 5 auto-reply responses when I returned and booted up the computer and opened Mac Mail.
How can I make it so that Mac Mail sends the auto-reply while I am away and the computer is off?

I don't think you can send e-mails when the computer is off and the program is shut down. Try setting up a reply on your e-mail provider's web site.

  • Mail and SSl can not send  email

I am having a problem with sending mail in 10.7.3 and mail 5.2
The email account is a pop3 account.  It worked fine for a long time.Last week it started to fail to send outgoing emails
I have deleted the account and added it back. Also have deleted the outgoing mail server.(when you delete a mail account it doesn' automaticly
delete the out going mail server)
I have another computer with the same email account and it works fine
Finally I unchecked use SSL and The account can now send emails.
User name and password are set correctly.
I talked to apple and they are blaming it on Frontier.
I have read other posts here about ssl problems with 10.7.2 and Imap accounts

  • Mail from Macbook Pro not syncing with iPhone

I am trying to set up my Mail account (which is set with Gmail) from my computer to sync with my iPhone. Unfortunately the iPhone goes is synced with Gmail and says that I have over 2000 emails. How can I get my iPhone to sync with my Mail app from my computer?
Also, I have deleted the account from my iPhone, but it still shows up on my iTunes. When I sync the iPhone, the mail settings are put back into my iPhone. How can I erase the gmail settings from my iTunes?
    Thanks for your help.
    Jude

You don't sync account mailboxes and messages with the email client used on your computer for accessing the account via the iTunes sync process. You can transfer account setup info only from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
Using the iPhone's mail client to access an email account is no different from using the Mail.app on your Mac for accessing the account. With a POP account, new messages recieved at the incoming mail server are downloaded, and when accessing a POP account with a new email client for the first time, all messages that remain at the incoming mail served for the account will be downloaded as new messages, since the new email client being used has never accessed the account - in this case, with the iPhone's mail client.
With an IMAP account, all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account.
You deselect transferring the account settings for this account from your computer to your iPhone at the same place where you selected this - under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.

  • Can not send email from Mac, iPhone, or iPad using mail using iCloud.

I can send email from the icloud web page but I get error messages that the icloud outgoing server is not recongized when I send email from my iphone, ipad and Mac mail.  I can receive icloud email okay on all devices.  I have manully setup a icloud server per instructions on icloud support page for mail's outgoing server name.  It still is not recongized.

I found a work around that works.   Got to Settings...Icloud....account......advanced....outgoing mail server.....
    Add an "other" server.
    Host Name p01-smtp.mail.me.com
Put in your me.com email address as username and your Apple ID password
    SSL is on
    Authentication is password
    Server port 587
This worked for me.....I will use this until the bug is fixed.     Don't make this server your primary.   Leave it in "on" status in the other category.
    Good luck

  • Mail does not send email

My problem is simply that Mail does not send email.
I have just migrated from iMac G5 to iMac Intel by using Migration Assistant. Everything else works just fine and I can receive email. However, if I try to reply, forward or send a new email message, Mail just does not do anything - no error message, nothing.
The fixes I have tried so far are removing the Mail plist file, repairing disk permissions and mailboxes. Of course, I have checked the account settings, especially outgoing server settings. I also reinstalled Mail application with Pacifist. None of this has solved the problem. I have tried sending email with Thunderbird and it works with no problems.
Does anybody have any suggestions how to fix this issue?
The OS is 10.4.8, Mail Version 2.0.6 (749.2/752.3), all the suggested software updates done.
    iMac Core Duo 20" 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Reinstalling Mail is rarely necessary or appropriate to solve a problem. It certainly cannot fix anything that could be wrong within your home folder or at the server or with the network, and may even introduce new issues if not done properly. Moreover, in Mac OS X 10.4 you don’t need Pacifist to reinstall Mail, you could also do it as described in the following article:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, if the version of the system software on your install disks is earlier than what you’re using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
The above won’t solve the problem. It’s just to ensure that you’ve properly reinstalled Mail, which you shouldn’t have done, and which apparently you didn’t do properly -- the version of Mail on your system should be 2.1.1, not 2.0.6.
The original problem could be caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.
