Mac Mini 2011 slow down after updating to Yosemite

Hi all!
After updating my Mac Mini (half 2011) from Mavericks to Yosemite, it became extremely slow and unresponsive. I have to wait a lot of time for apps to open and commands, like clicking a button, to be executed executed. File Vault, that I read is a common cause of slow down, is NOT enabled.
What should I do? In these cases, for my Windows PC, I insert the OS DVD and format: what's the equivalent operation for a Mac?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Buy more RAM - a lot more.

  • Mac Mini won't boot after update

I have a Mac Mini that won't boot after the most recent software update. Since the Mini has only a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a number of the usual options (hold down shift, etc.) won't work. I've tried a reset, also no luck. At the moment, I can't locate my Tiger install CD either.
When holding the power button on during boot, I get a series of flashes from the status light on the front (a set of very rapid flashes, followed by a slower set, followed by a slow set) but no startup chime, or fan, or video. My display and power source are both known-good (work fine with my Powerbook)
Any suggestions, other than buying a hardwired keyboard/mouse?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The 'newer version of OS X" error occurs because the installer on the DVD you have booted to has by default been set to update the version of MacOS on the hard drive, which of course it can't do because the version of MacOS it is installing is newer. The only way to install in this situation is to select a different option. However, that isn't what you want to do at this point, because as it says, you'll loose your data if you do an 'erase and install'.
Instead, you should see menus at the top of the screen when it's booted to that install disk. Click the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility, and then click the top entry for the internal hard drive on the left. Once done, click on the 'Repair Disk' button (not Repair Permissions). This will test the drive to make sure it's OK. If it reports errors, and then reports 'error or exit' with the drive not repaired, you will either need a 3rd party application such as Alsoft's Disk Warrior, or to perform an erase and install (which of course you don't want to do at this point because your data is not backed up).
If the Repair Disk process completes with no errors, next select Repair Permissions, and let that process complete, then reboot the system as normal to see if you can now access the drive.

  • Mac Mini 2011 - Slow Transmit Rate Over Wifi

I just swapped over my 2009 mac mini for a new model, and the wifi performance was below average (I use it as a media centre streaming videos over the wifi network to my tv)  The 2009 model would stream 1080p files with no problem at all - but the 2011 model couldnt handle it....
I called apple support (after formatting and re-installing lion, and trying every known "improving wifi performance" tactic').  They advised that it sounds like a hardware fault, so I took it back to my retailer, and got a brand new one...
The new one worked awesome!  streaming 1080p files with ease...
Then today... its started glitching again, and when checking the stats of the wifi connection.. I have a tramsmit rate of 14..
Does this problem relate to a software issue with lion?  What is happening?? I didnt change anything.. One day - Perfect... Next day - Bad...
    Help!

It will help to analyse the problem if you do another test. Or a couple of tests.
First test for WAN speed issues.
Can you please do a test with ethernet plugged into the AE instead of the modem.
Wireless off and see if you get full speed as per the modem router.. or you are suffering the same slowdown.
If you clearly get the same speed here as you get via wireless, no need for the second test. The issue is not wireless at all, it is the WAN speed of the AE which can be problematic.
Second test for Wireless Speed issues.
Please do a file transfer in your local LAN to another device eg another computer plugged in by ethernet to one over wireless.. You do want just one wireless link.. so you are testing transfer speed over the wireless.. copy just one large file, like an OS update.. 1GB or so. You can open the activity monitor to track the progress.. you can even post a screenshot of the transfer graph which can be helpful.
So you have between the two tests checked the WAN and the Local LAN speeds. With this we can more easily figure out the bottle neck.
Please do use b for bits.. all network speeds are in bits .. B for Bytes.. which is file sizes etc. 8bits in a Byte.. but network speeds and file transfer speeds we need to be clear in using consistent terms.

  • Mac Mini - Weird screen colours after update - Help!?

I just updated to Mavericks on my Mac Mini and my colours have went really weird.  The reds and oranges are now greens, and the blues are now purples.  I just thought this was the new colour scheme (LOL) then I realised the colours had effected everything.  Panicking abit as the colour is very important for my photography work.
The screen I have plugged in is just a bog standard 21".  I tried the standard calbriation test but it was useless, it ended up extremely bright and still badly coloured, and there was no way I was saving that as a profile - Should I try the 'expert mode' calibiration?
Any advice would be great! Thank you kindly! :-)

Update: I am trying to boot from the mac osx install disc; holding down C or alt/option upon startup isn't doing anything....

  • RT target slows down after updating with a shared variable

I am using a shared variable that is defined in the RT target (cFP-2110) to transfer data from the host PC.  The shared variable is a cluster of scaling parameters that needs to be stored in the RT target.  The host PC is only connected temporarily for system setup and calibration.
There is only one instance of the shared variable in both the host PC vi and the target vi.  The shared variable in the host is located in an event case that is activated when there is a value change.  Everything works great until I make a value change in the shared variable.  The target vi promptly slows from 30mSec to about 500 mSec and stays that way.  The only way I can get the RT target to run full speed again is to recycle power or reset it.
    What am I doing wrong?
Temporarily slowing down the RT target when the shared variable is updated is not a problem for this application.  The problem is that I have to restart the target to get it running at full speed again.
    I’m using Win-XP, LV 8.5.1 and FieldPoint 6.0.1
    Thanks,
    Dave J.

    Hi Mark,
The host is sending the shared variable via an event case.   When the event is activated, the data is sent to the target and it functions as expected, except that it slows down to a crawl. I have to restart the target to get it working up to speed again.   The are no error codes.
The shared variable is a cluster of several items and it is attached.
In the mean time to promote the project, I split up the cluster into smaller clusters to use several shared variables and now I do not have a slow down problem.  In other words, it works great.  As an experiment I have sent the several small clusters at one time and I get the slow-down problem again.
I've come to the conclusion that large single cluster (which is attached) is too much to send at one time.
Please advise if there is something else to learn or understand.
    Thanks,
    Dave J.

  • Slow Macbook after updating to Yosemite 10.10.3

Please see the below report from EtreCheck in regards to this.
    Thanks.
    Problem description:
Macbook Pro has been running very slowly since updating to Yosemite 10.10.3 (I think thats it) to the point where it has been basically unusable.
There seems to be spikes as to when the Macbook runs most slowly.
Have re-installed OS X a number of times and even restored the Macbook to a point before updating Yosemite to 10.10.3 via TimeMachine.
Other things i have done include:
    - Reducing the number of things Spotlight searches for - I have a notification thats says ‘Optimising Your Mac - Performance and Battery life will be affected until completed’ which has been there for over a week now. I had read on some forums this was to do with Spotlight re-indexing, however when checking to find a progress bar there does not appear to be one which suggest Spotlight re-indexing is not the issue.
    - Removing unecessary widgets, mail and calendar accounts (Issues with Calendar Agent were showing up in Console)
    - Ran EtreCheck and removed a number of .plist files that seemed be an issue. It appears from this report that one still remins for CleanMyMac2 (which I know causes issues). Tried to delete this file but it won't allow me.
There a few others but I’ve been trying so many things Ive lost track.
If someone could help it would be much appreciated.

  • IMac (late 2013) periodically shuts down after updating to Yosemite

I have a 27 inch iMac (late 2013, have had it 6 mos.) which I updated to Yosemite and after the update, it has just shutdown 5 or 6 times, (panic reports say 5 times). The system also seems sluggish at times... It has worked like a charm until the upgrade. I'm trying to decide whether to reinstall Yosemite -which went smoothly- or to try to go back to Mavericks. I have the System Diagnostic Reports as well as the system diagnostic test, I just don't know how to interpret the results. Does anyone have the expertise to explain what is happening? (I'm not a novice, but haven't played with unix for 18 years!)
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

I have a similar problem on my iMac 27-inch Mid 2011. No problems before upgrade yesterday to Yosemite. System settings show positive connection for wifi and ethernet. But web & mail access doesn't work for ethernet. Wifi access works only if I change service order with wifi listed before ethernet.
Apple phone support blamed it on my internet provider or router. However, our 2nd iMac (identical model) has web & mail access with ethernet.  The other iMac is still running Mavericks.  So the problem is clearly Yosemite.
I have put in a request for Apple support to call me tomorrow, & I'll see if they try the blame game again.

  • Very slow Macbook after updating to Yosemite.

    Two questions;
    1) I updated to Yosemite a few days ago and like it. But my macbook (2013) is now running very slow. I have done all the latests software updates.
In the Activity Monitor, a process called DesktopServicesHelper (PID 1681) take up 99% of my CPU%. What is this and why? How do I fix it? Please help!
    2) Also in the Activity Monitor, there is a process which is not responding, called com.apple.geod (PID 1703). What is this? What does it mean? How do I fix it?

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Massive slow down after update

Hi, I have Nokia n95-1 and my problem is that today I've updated my firmware from 30.0.015 to 31.0.017 and encountered massive slowdown of phone. If I press menu button I must wait 20sec, others option works even slower. I have newest pcsuite, updater and drivers. My phone is unusable now as I can even see how particular parts of UI are drawn on screen. Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Try to find in this directory. Assuming that you are using Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A
Once you find this directory, delete all the files in it & close Windows Explorer. Connect your phone and run NSU. The standard GUI will appear to update your software but this time, NSU will re-download your firmware from NSU servers.
I suspected that the firmware that you first downloaded got some CRC or any errors during downloading and even after you re-flashed for second or third times, NSU still using the 'corrupted' firmware that you previously downloaded in that directory.
Do remember to backup all your data/contacts before updating the firmware....

  • I-Phone 3G slowed down after updating to OS 4.0.1

My I-phone 3G was running perfectly fine, till I updated to OS 4, it's been slower than the slowest, and even turns itself off at anytime, during browsing and even during calls. I updated to 4.0.1 only to improve things a little bit. Still the problems persist.
Even with the 4.0.1 update, it runs very slow compared to OS 3 and it's update. Apple needs to fix this. it still reboots itself at anytime, and internet is also very very slow. Am cursing myself why I updated it.

Similar problems to all the other posts. Slow response. Some apps time out before they can load. Reset helps some but doesn't last and doesn't improve everything. Noticed that some apps that have upgraded since 4.0 was released seem to run faster after they are updated on the phone. cases on point most recently are RunKeeper and GolfShot, but thought i was seeing better performance on some others too.
Steve Jobs seems to be "over the hill" with his dismal denial that there are any problems with OS4. Who can trust him now? Sad that those of us with contracts to run for another year on 3G phones get ignored by apple while it "fixes" the battery indicator! Big deal on that fix - it did nothing to improve connectivity to ATT network, just shows how poor the connection really is now instead of making us think it was better with the old software!
